Sebastian Benedetto By Dan Campanella, Staff Writer YORK It was early Tuesday morning when Sebastian Benedetto woke up to start his day. This day would be very different than that of other 15-year-oldÕs waking up around the Country. This was in part due to him donning his traditional Highland dress, the formal attire in which a gentleman of Scotland would wear. The other part of his morningÕs vast difference had to do with the bagpipes that would accompany him for the entirety of that day and the next. His plan was the same that it had been for the past three years, travel north from his home in York to Portland. From there, Sebastian would travel
down the coast stopping to play his bagpipes at 22 fire and police stations along the way, ultimately concluding with him playing one final song at the Garden of Remembrance 9/11 Memorial in Boston. For most, this would not be normal, but Sebastian Benedetto is not a normal teenager and September 11th will never again be a day of normality. Sebastian started playing instruments at a relatively young age. To say music came natural to him, would be to say that he went through the normal growing pains a child must endure to make sense of musical theory, which he was fortunate to not have to suffer through. Beginning with the mandolin, he

Talent and Character quickly understood the difference between chaotic noise and purposeful rhythmic structure. When he was just 6 years old, Sebastian heard bagpipes for the first time and knew that this instrument was his musical calling. It took several years before his parents could find an instructor, but 4 ½ years ago he started his journey and has never looked back. In less than 5 years, Benedetto has proven that his talent is measurable by more than just his deep desire to play. Twice a week he travels to Exeter, NH where he receives individual and group lessons on top of his See BENEDETTO page 4...
