could count on the community that had formed around the live series.” She reached out to local poets and musicians, and several people who had performed in the past volunteered to help create the new online show – including former Maine Poet Laureate Wes McNair, whose statewide Maine Poetry Express served as a model for Rice Library series that evolved from it. Together with musician Kent Allyn and a small group of poetry-lovers who agreed to read published poems they loved, McNair agreed to anchor the first show. That was in April, 2020. Since then, over 1,350 listeners, near and far, have tuned in to hear the seven shows that have been published. Each podcast features a brief poetry reading by a New England area poet, as well as readings by “community readers,” people who love poetry but may not be poets themselves. The poems are united by a theme for each show and woven together with instrumental music performed by one of the many fine musicians in the seacoast area. Recent podcasts have featured poets Andrew Merton of New Hampshire, former Maine Poet Laureate Betsy Sholl of Maine, and James Crews of Vermont. Seacoast area musicians Kent Allyn, David Graf, and Jonathan Booth are regular performers. Listening to a podcast is easy if you have a smart phone, tablet, or computer. Find the Rice Pudding Poetry Podcast through your browser or go directly to the show by typing ricepudding.podbean.com into a Google search bar. The entire archive of shows is available at any time that it’s convenient for you to listen. This year’s podcast season kicks off with a show that will

be published on October 21 and will be available thereafter. It features New Hampshire poet Sam DeFlitch, author of the recently published Confluence (Broadstone Books, 2021). She’s a National Poetry Series finalist and recipient of fellowships and awards from the Martha’s Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing, The Massachusetts Poetry Festival, and the University of New Hampshire, where she completed her MFA. She’ll be joined by pianist Mike Effenberger, a recording and performing artist who received the Young Beacon in Jazz award from New School University in New York City, from which he graduated in 2005. Drawing on gospel, American minimalism, jazz, and 20th century music. Mike plays throughout New England with a variety of bands including fiveighthirteen, Jazzputin and the Jug Skunks, the secular gospel choir Rock My Soul, Dan Blakeslee, and Weird Turn Pro, which plays his original music. “We produce shows every other month or so, and are planning this year to include an all-children’s show later in the spring,” says Green. “We couldn’t do this without Lee Perkins and the Rice Library Board of Directors. Their encouragement and support have been essential,” says Green.

up on a Navajo reservation visited the Pumpkin Patch and talked about her family’s experience growing pumpkins. She used the money she earned to buy school clothes, books and supplies. Without that income, she would not have been able to attend school. For more information, call 207-363-3758 or visit www.firstparishyork.net.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, When I want to send an email in Mozilla Thunderbird, I can’t send it because the, “Send” button has disappeared. Can you help me get it back? Thank you, Thelma Dear Thelma, It sounds like the composition toolbar has been turned off. Here is how to turn it back on. 1. Open a new email messages using the, “Write” button. 2. If the menu bar across the top of your new email is visible, click on “View”. If it is not visible, tap the, “Alt” button on your keyboard to display the menu, then click on, “View”. 3. In the “View” menu, hover your mouse pointer over, “Toolbars”. 4. In the, “Toolbars” menu, click on, “Composition Toolbar” to turn it on. You should now have a composition toolbar with the, “Send” button at the top of your email message. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, My iPhone is six months old and I’m already getting messages saying I only have 25% of my iCloud memory left and for 0.99 a month I can add 50GB to my current 5GB. Do you know if I can save stuff in the cloud somewhere else to clear out my existing space? I hope you can lead me in the right direction since this is not a typical computer question. Once again thanks do much for all your help over the years! All the best to you! Marilyn Dear Marilyn, You could store some of your photos and other stuff in an online service like Dropbox, but they also have a space limit in their free accounts. Also, the backups would not be automatic like they are with iCloud. I do pay for the 50GB and in my opinion it is worth 0.99 a month. That is less than $12 per year which I think is a good deal. My phone automatically backs everything up when I plug it in to charge,

and I can access my photos, contacts, calendar and more from any computer at www.icloud. com. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Hi there and thank you so much for all you do! I have three questions. I do not feel comfortable using my iPhone to go on Facebook I use my laptop. Is it safe to use on the iPhone phone? Thanks, Marilyn Dear Marilyn, The short answer is yes, it is probably safer to go on Facebook with your iPhone than your Windows computer. The reason for this is that not many applications can run on your phone, while lots of applications can run on your windows computer. This means that malicious software can be embedded that would run on your computer, would not be able to run on your iPhone. A phone that is not an iPhone would not be quite as safe. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady,

We have Windows 10 and Windows Live Mail. We will sometimes get duplicates of email and I am unable to delete some of them or move them to junk mail. It says “an unknown error has occurred”. Can you help? Lorna Dear Lorna, I can’t help you fix Windows Live Mail, it is no longer supported by Microsoft, and other than their Office email program, Outlook, Microsoft doesn’t specialize in email programs. I would suggest that you get an email program from a different company. I prefer Mozilla Thunderbird. It is free to use and has some very good features. I use Thunderbird on my computer. Most of my customers that use Thunderbird don’t have errors or problems, and if there is a problem, it is usually solved by re-installing the program. Something that you can’t do with Windows live mail or other Windows

built in email programs because they are part of the operating system and can’t be completely removed and re-installed. Elizabeth

$1 Million to Support Mental Health and Substance Treatment WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME) recently announced that Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services will receive a grant of $929,502 to support Maine people with mental health or substance use disorders, as the state suffers a spike in overdose fatalities due to stresses tied to the ongoing pandemic. The funding from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will support development of a new Medicaid program providing community-based, mobile crisis interventions for Medicaid

beneficiaries. The funds were allocated through the American Rescue Plan (ARP), which passed in March 50-49 with the Senator’s crucial vote. “For many, the pandemic has exacerbated long-standing struggles with mental health challenges and substance use disorders,” said Senator King. “Last year, our state saw a record 504 deaths from drug overdoses – and through the first half of 2021, this troubling pace isn’t slowing down. $6.1M to Support Families & Children WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King recently announced that the Maine Department of Health and Human Services has been awarded $6,111,628 to improve the health of Maine mothers and children. The funding was awarded through the U.S. Health Resources & Services Administration’ (HRSA) Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) Program, and will support efforts to promote childhood development, reduce child abuse, and enhance child and maternal health. “It is important that children have a strong foundation to facilitate their future success, and the MIECHV program has helped provide this foundation for many young children and families across Maine and the country. This funding will help at-risk families receive the support they need, from the comfort and convenience of their own homes,” said Senators Collins and King and in a joint statement. “We’re grateful to the Maine Department of Health and Human Services for their continued work to promote childhood development, ...FUNDS from page 16 isolation drive an uptick in ‘diseases of despair,’ it is vital that we provide resources that can meet people where they are. This latest funding from the American Rescue Plan will provide crucial support to Maine people in need and help save lives.” Senator King has made combating the opioid crisis one of his highest priorities in Washington, both before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic and since its initial spread across the country. Since the pandemic has separated Americans from their loved ones and made it more difficult to access resources, Senator King has worked to connect with Maine people virtually and raise awareness about resources available to for support. Earlier this year, he urged President Biden to request robust funding and increase the federal investment in our nation’s response to the ongoing opioid and substance use disorder (SUD) epidemic. In September 2020, he introduced a bipartisan resolution to See RESCUE page 20...

improve maternal health, and give every child an opportunity to thrive.” Senators Collins and King have long supported efforts to strengthen families and improve maternal health care. Senator Collins co-authored the Two-Generation Economic Empowerment Act, a bipartisan bill to help low-income parents and children simultaneously to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty. Senators King and Collins cosponsored the Rural Maternal and Obstetric Modernization of Services (Rural MOMS) Act, a bipartisan bill that would improve data collection, expand services, and award funding to help ensure that new and expecting moms living in rural communities get the care they need. The United States has the worst rate of maternal deaths in the developed world and one of the highest rates of infant mortality.

teries will be joining in the effort to support the mission to Remember, Honor, Teach, as an official location for 2021. This is the first year that the cemeteries will participate in this national event. Wreaths Across America started as a simple gesture of thanks that has grown into a national movement of dedicated volunteers and communities coming together to not only remember the nation’s fallen and honor their service, but to teach the next generation about the sacrifices made for us to live freely. This year, there will be more than 2,500 participating locations placing wreaths on National Wreaths Across America Day – Saturday, December 18, – with more than two million volunteers coming together. The goal for Kittery is to raise enough funds to place100 veterans’ wreaths on the headstones of some of the 2400 local heroes laid to rest here, to ensure that the individuals who served to protect the freedoms of our

country never be forgotten and to bring the community together in patriotic commemoration. “We are forever grateful for the thousands of supporters who dedicate their time and effort to fulfilling our mission on a local level,” said Karen Worcester, executive director, Wreaths Across America. “These individuals and their communities know the value of remembering the fallen, honoring those who currently serve and teaching the next generation about the sacrifices made for our freedom every day, and without their continued support, Wreaths Across America would not exist.” Those interested in volunteering for Wreaths Across America, or sponsoring a wreath for any one of the major cemeteries in Kittery or Kittery Point, are invited to visit www.wreathsacrossameeerica.org/meogca to learn more. National Wreaths Across America Day is a free, non-political, community event open to all people.

FINANCE & CAREER FEMA Grants Support Maine How Older Adults Firefighters in Multiple Towns Can Pay Off Debt

WASHINGTON, DC Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME) announced more than $3 million in federal funding for Maine fire departments. Fire departments in Falmouth, Kennebunk, Jefferson, and at the Maine State Fire Academy in South Portland will receive a total of $668,604.14 through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG). The town of Kennebunk was also awarded more than $2.6 million to hire eight new firefighters through FEMA’s Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program. “This additional funding issued by FEMA will help keep our brave first responders safe. ...ENERGY from page 2

and prepare for and mitigate the effects of climate change on Maine. Maine has set some of the most aggressive renewable energy requirements in the country – 80 percent renewable energy by 2030, and a goal of 100 percent by 2050. Maine also enacted aggressive targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions – 45 percent by 2030, and 80 percent by 2050, as well as achieving carbon neutrality by 2045. Governor Mills has also pledged to more than double Maine’s clean energy and energy efficiency jobs to 30,000 by 2030; to expand incentives for purchasing electric vehicles (EV) and build more EV charging stations across Maine; to double the pace of home weatherization; and to purchase more renewable energy through the state procurement process.

Funding like this is crucial for town departments and the State Fire Academy to hire, train, and strengthen prospective firefighters so they’re prepared to protect and serve our communities when the alarm sounds,” said Congresswoman Pingree. “Every year, I’ve fought to increase funding for these vital programs as a member of the House Appropriations Committee because I know just how critical this funding is to the safety of our first responders and the municipalities they serve.” The AFG program assists first-responder organizations in

obtaining emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, emergency vehicles, and training. Details of the grants include $20,262.86 for vehicle extrication equipment to the Kennebunk Fire & Rescue Department. In this fiscal year, FEMA’s SAFER grant program will award $355 million to an estimated 300 eligible fire departments and volunteer fire organizations nationwide. In the fourth round of funding, the town of Kennebunk was awarded $2,635,736.56 to hire eight new full-time firefighters.

To demonstrate the sustainability of historic sites, applicants will be required to submit a cyclical maintenance/stewardship plan, and a condition assessment, with, if needed, project phasing detail that has been prepared or updated within the last five years. All organizations that wish to be considered should complete an online Letter of Inquiry form, accepted until November 5. Invited applications will be due February 25, 2022. Not all letters of inquiry will result in invitations to submit full applications. To be eligible to apply, organizations must have a 501(c)3 IRS designation. As adults approach retirement, more are turning to debt to make ends meet. In 2020, retirees’ non-mortgage debt more than doubled to $20,000, according to the latest State of Retirement Finances report from Clever. “Debt can delay your retirement dreams and cause undue stress in your golden years,” said Michael Sullivan, a personal financial consultant with Take Charge America, a nonprofit credit counseling and debt management agency. “Although paying down debt in retirement can be challenging, you’ll regain a sense of financial freedom and be able to enjoy your hard-earned money.” Sullivan shares several strategies to help older adults pay off debt. Remember to budget. You can’t pay off your debt without a budget, which gives you a clear picture of your income and expenses. Make any necessary spending changes to prioritize debt repayment. Many budgeting tools are available including apps like EveryDollar or Mint. You also can use a spreadsheet. Prioritize your needs. Paying off debt should be a priority heading into or in retirement. Donna Marie T. Blair, 68 SA N FOR D – Donna Marie T. Blair, longtime resident of Maine and New York, passed away unexpectedly at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA, on Monday, September 13, 2021. Born on October 23,1952 in Glens Falls, NY, the fourth of five children to Samuel Thomas and Dorothy ‘Dot’ (Smith) Blair of Lake George, NY. Donna was predeceased by her parents and three of her siblings, Sandra ‘Sandy’ Albarran of Florida, Wayne Blair of California, and Darlene ‘Dolly’ Robinson of New York. She is survived by her sister Colleen Flewelling of New York; former husband Terry G. Hobbs Sr. of New York; and three sons and daughters-in-law, Terry ‘TJ’ and Jayme (Tucker) Hobbs Jr. of New York, Thomas and Jes-

sica (Brackett) Hobbs of New Hampshire, and Timothy and Elizabeth ‘Libby’ (Johnsen) Hobbs of Maine; six grandchildren, Nathan, Kaley, Timothy Jr., Trevor, Elizabeth ‘Izzy’, and Lincoln Hobbs; countless cousins, nieces, and nephews; along with many friends she treasured from all around the globe. When your home town is a sought-after vacation destination like Lake George, public interaction is plentiful. Donna’s parents owned and operated Blair’s Grocery in Lake George Village tucked within the Adirondack Mountain Range. So early on Donna interacted with folks young and old from across the United States and Canada. After attending Lake George High School, Donna married and started her family. She naturally gravitated to a line of work where her personality shined. The hospitality industry was a great fit for Donna. As she loved the conversational atmosphere that came along with her favorite occupation, waitressing wherever life took her around the country. Yet second to none was her love of the restaurants back in her home town, Lake George, NY. Among the many things that will be evident in Donna’s absence, her wit and charm are atop that list. Her humorous nature came through as strong

as her caring side amid a single conversation with her. At Donna’s request, there will be no formal services held. Family and friends are welcome to attend an outdoor Celebration of Life honoring Donna at a private residence in Wells on Saturday, September 25, 12-3 p.m. Please contact the family for the address. The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider donating to the American Red Cross at www. redcrossblood.org in tribute to Donna’s life taken too soon. FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

YORK COUNTY A Yom Kippur Service will be held on Monday, September 28 at 4 p.m. The services will last one hour and includes the shofar being blown, Kiddush and Hamotzi prayers performed, along with the prayer for apples and honey. These food items will then be distributed. Yizkor, the memorial service, will be recited. Contact Cantor Ellen Farber at 207-251-1746 or musicalellen@yahoo.com to register, at which time the location will be disclosed. Everyone will be masked, socially distanced, and asked to bring their own chair. All are welcome. Wishing you “L’shana Tova Tikateyvu” this year especially!

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Emma’s Angels NORTH BERWICK Meet adorable Gypsy! She came to us as a feral a few months ago and we realized she was just under socialized. She is doing amazingly with the other cats and is cute as can be. She is a beautiful combo of a Tortie and Bengal in color. Gypsy needs a home that is quiet with no kids or dogs. She is a tiny girl, and eight months old. She gets along with other cats, she is Spayed and up to date on her shots. If you would like to meet Gypsy call 207-676-5599.

until their kitty mama had to move to Kentucky. She couldn’t take her kitties due to an allergic child who lived in her new home. Sadly, she said goodbye to Tom and Jerry and surrendered them to Safe Haven. Tom and Jerry, who resemble Maine Coon cats, got an A+ rating on all their medical tests. They certainly look healthy, with their beautiful long hair and glowing eyes. Their happy past is evident with their total trust and love for people. They enjoy being held and getting attention from people. In the past, these beautiful brothers lived with a dog and other cats, so if you already have pets with the right personality, they should fit right in. Kitties like Tom and Jerry should be an easy and beautiful addition to someone who loves animals and shows it by providing love and care and respect. FMI call the Safe Haven shelter at 207-646-1611. Safe Haven is looking for additional volunteers to receive and sort donations on Saturdays from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. If you can only spare two Saturdays a month, we can schedule you accordingly. It takes a certain personality to work in receiving. For example, you mustn’t freak out or grumble in the face of instant clutter. It helps to be a positive thinker and find blessings in almost everything. You must be patient, polite and kind, even to those whose donations must be declined. Liturgy on Sunday, October 3. Parishes within the Anglican church worldwide (known as Episcopal in the US) offer these blessings in honor of St. Francis of Assisi who is associated with the patronage of animals. The church invites you and your pet(s) to either the 8 a.m. service or the 10 a.m. service with Holy Communion. The celebrant is the Right Reverand Gary Lillibridge, Ret. Bishop of Diocese of West Texas (San Antonio) who is the resident priest from August to October. Each pet will receive a blessing prayer said over them and be anointed with holy water – It’s always enjoyable to observe the 100+ pets, from cats to dogs to chickens, as they react differently when sprinkled with water! This year’s service, like last year’s, will be held outside, weather permitting, so attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Please also bring your pets on leashes, in cages, or in carriers. Social distancing and masks required for the unvaccinated. Masks and sanitizer will be available onsite. All are welcome!
