41st Eliot Festival Day Ushers in Fall Season ELIOT The 41st Eliot Festival Day is on Saturday, September 24 this year, in the center of Eliot, from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. The flag-raising ceremony takes place at the Eliot Fire Station, 1323 State Road, officially kicking off the day at 8:15 a.m. The 5K Road Race follows promptly afterward, starting from the town hall parking lot at 8:30 a.m. Music, prizes, and great food await runners and attendees alike. At 9 a.m., local vendors open their tables along State Road, offering artful crafts and neighborhood information. Food
trucks and a new farmers’ market will be set up in Hammond Park. The festival parade kicks off at 10:30 a.m. from the Eliot Boat
Basin, passing the review stand across from Hammond Park at 11 a.m., and ending at the William Fogg Library.
The kid’s area has many new and fun family activities this year. Edward Jones Financial Advisor Cy Kolod has generously sponsored the games, rides, bouncy houses, and face painting events. Activities are for all ages, all free of charge. Leading the musical entertainment for the day is Dancin’ DJ Carmen Cronin, with music by Ben Butterworth and Gordon James Turrisi. The Chalmers Insurance Group Kid’s Fun Run starts at the the library at 12 p.m., running down State Road to finish at the fire station. The third annual Eliot Festival Outhouse Race,
with cash prizes by Linda Pratt Century 21, starts at Hammond Park at 1 p.m. The Eliot Maine Bicentennial Committee invites everyone to celebrate the placement of an historic marker at the former Melvin Dixon Blacksmith Shop on Dixon Road. The building was used for town meetings before the construction of a town hall in 1880. Other events surrounding the festival include: on Friday September 23, the Eliot/Kittery American Legion Post 188 will host a Chili Festival at Eliot Boat Basin, 6-9 p.m. A live band and a car and motorcycle show, all make up the fun; on Sunday, See ELIOT on page 4 . . .
The Pumpkin Patch Opens on Saturday, September 24 YORK For nearly a decade each fall, First Parish Church York has partnered with Pumpkin Patch Fundraisers in providing the opportunity to celebrate a quintessential New England fall experience, while generating income for the families of the Navajo Nation in Farmington, New Mexico and muchneeded support for families in need, both locally and around the world. What distinguishes this
partnership are the principles on which Pumpkin Patch Fundraisers was founded. It began in 1974 in North Carolina, with three acres of pumpkins and a partnership with one church. There was no contract, no legal proceeding, just a handshake and trust. Trust continues to be the foundation of Pumpkin Patch Fundraisers and their partnerships. STATEWIDE The Maine State Pomological Society will hold the 22nd annual Maine Apple Sunday on September 18 with participating orchards around the state. Maine Apple Sunday starts the peak of the apple harvest when summer apples are still available, but the main crop is ready for its first pick. Apple orchards from Wells to Caribou will celebrate by offering special activities at their orchards. Spiller Farm in Wells will have farm tour wagon rides (1 p.m. and 2 p.m. with Farmer Bill), pick-your-own apples, pumpkins, and other veggies, as well as farm animals to visit.
