York’s 8th Annual Marketfest Opens September 23 YORK Marketfest has become a welcome tradition in Maine's York Village every fall. The event attracts thousands to the area, taking place this year on Saturday September 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Marketfest is presented by York Village Business Association in conjunction with Old York Historical Society and First Parish Church. Opening ceremony will welcome the festivities at 10 a.m. and free parking and free shuttles will be offered, with parking at York Middle School, 30 Organug Rd. Marketfest activities fea-

tured throughout the day include a traditional pig roast, historic reenactments and tours at Museums of Old York, artisan demonstrations, nonprofit esplanade, York Village sidewalk sale and many other special events. First Parish Church will hold an Antique & Collectible Sale. Food vendors will satisfy your hunger cravings by selling their hearty fare and festival favorites, while artisans of all kinds will have their art and wares available for sale including art, pottery, crafts, jewelry and specialty goods such as handbags, soaps and wood furniture.

The Old Gaol, Wilcox House, Jefferds Tavern and Parsons Center will be offering admission for free or for $1. These venues feature tours, exhibits, farm stands, craft and cider press demonstrations. The festival is sponsored by companies such as Camden National Bank, York Hospital, Tapley Insurance Agency, Amidon Family Dentistry, LLC. and many others. Also present for the photo opp and dinner was Wells Town Manager Jonathan Carter and founding member of the newly formed Friends of Wells Harbor, Ryan Liberty. Both Carter and Liberty greeted students and offered comments with thanks to the group for their artistic contributions. The idea for the mural project took shape earlier in 2017 when Liberty met with Wells Harbor Master Chris Mayo to discuss various ways his organization could contribute to the

dock area. One of the ideas Mayo suggested was creating three large murals to cover the bait coolers that occupy space near Mayo’s office. The USS New Mexico Arrives at PNS KITTERY The Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine USS New Mexico (SSN 779) and her crew of 15 officers and 117 enlisted personnel arrived at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNS) September 7. While at the shipyard, New Mexico will complete scheduled maintenance work and several system upgrades. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is the Navy’s center of excellence for submarine overhaul, repair and modernization. New Mexico is the sixth
