Maine CDC Promotes Law to Prevent Vaping in Schools AUGUSTA Maine schools have reported a significant increase in the number of students using electronic smoking devices, commonly referred to as vaping, over the past year. To support schools in addressing these emerging products, the Maine Legislature passed a bill to prohibit electronic smoking devices at schools, which will take effect on September 19. LD 152 - “An Act to Prohibit the Possession and Use of Electronic Smoking Devices on School Grounds” was signed

into law on April 30 by Governor Mills as an important step to protect young Mainers. The recently enacted biennial budget,

signed by Governor Mills on June 17, also allocates $10 million from the Fund for a Healthy Maine for smoking prevention

and cessation. Effective September 19, Maine law will prohibit use and possession of all tobacco products, including both combustible and electronic products, on school grounds, in school buildings, at school-sponsored events, and on school buses. Tobacco products include cigarettes, cigars, pipes, electronic cigarettes, electronic cigars, electronic pipes, electronic hookahs, other vaping-type products, hookahs, pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff, snus, as well as filters, rolling papers, and any

tobacco or nicotine liquids. E-cigarettes entered the U.S. marketplace around 2007, and since 2014, they have been the most commonly used tobacco product among U.S. youth. Ecigarettes typically contain nicotine as well as other chemicals known to damage health. The U.S. Surgeon General reports nicotine exposure during adolescence and young adulthood can cause addiction, harm the developing brain, and damage the respiratory system, including See VAPING page 5...

Spain, Portugal, Italy, Columbia, South Africa, and more, visitors flock to this collection. With no ropes obstructing viewing opportunities for car admirers, Stentiford and company seek to differentiate themselves from other car museums. Further, Phil Maynard, a long-time national independent television producer, explained that they are trying to “produce a television series that shows vehicles that you normally do not see in car shows.” There’s more to cars than “pretty paint,” he reminded. Visitors may appear in the television documentary, for

their favorite car. Among the impressive collection of classics at the museum

is the 1948 Tucker 48, “The Holy Grail of American cars,” Stentiford said (pictured). With only 51 Tucker 48s made and 47 left in the world, the museum’s acquisition of the Tucker 48 is substantial, costing Stentiford $1.8 million. There is a special video exhibit near the Tucker 48 which shows a 1948 newsreel that shows the very same Tucker 48 that’s on display at the museum. Tucker had in mind creating a safe car in a world where car safety wasn’t nearly as prevalent as it is today. The Tucker 48 See CARS page 2...

Armed Forces Game to Show Appreciation WELLS Wells High School will be hosting its annual Armed Forces Football Game on Friday, September 20 at 7 p.m. A handful of years ago, Head Football Coach Tim Roche wished to honor the sacrifice of others and now chooses one game each year to make into an appreciation night that includes a ceremony for active and retired armed service members. Friday’s game will feature the Wells Warriors at home against the Morse Shipbuilders of Bath. Local players will escort the attending military veterans

onto the field to be introduced to the crowd. Flags line the streets from the elementary school on Route 109 and along Route 1 to Eldredge Road. All veterans and active members of the military are encouraged to participate with free admission. Admission is otherwise $3 for adults and $1 for students. This year’s proceeds will be donated to Honor Flight Maine (www.honorflightmaine. org). Maine Diner, on Route 1 in Wells, also wishes to support the Armed Forces Football
