The Day Our Nation Changed By Jim Fabiano Twenty years just isn’t enough. Since that day we have experienced many times that are hard and changed our lives. The pandemic has to be one of them with the retreat from Afghanistan being another that altered the way we viewed our nation and our society. I still remember that day in my class with my students; that day when all of our histories changed, that day I spend most of my life trying to not only understand, but to also believe. I just couldn’t do it. I just couldn’t express what I was feeling in words.

I knew everyone of those people who were condemned to die. I didn’t know their faces or their names but I knew them all. They were husbands and wives of families working to make the people they were responsible for safe and comfortable. They were the children of families whose hard work and perseverance made their families proud. They were the grandparents who were almost ready to live out their lives doing something they had dreamed they wanted to do. They were also the young and tough men and women who decided

their lives would not be equated by the dollar bill. They had decided their legacy would represent the best of the human spirit. They were the first to respond to people needing help. They will be last ones we will find. There are certain days in our lives that define who we are and the path we will take in life. Mine occurred on November 22, 1963. I remember what I was doing and where I was. Hell, I even remember what I was wearing. I look at my students and realize that See 911 page 15...

the 2020-21 school year, Masonic Ocean Lodge 142 of Wells gave 60 new bicycles to Wells Elementary School students who were among those that participated in this year’s Masonic Bikes for Books reading incentive program sponsored by the Maine Masonic Charitable Foundation. The names of those receiving a bike were selected from various classroom drawings. This was WES’s sixth year participating in this program coordinated at WES by Literary Specialist and WOCSD Director of Academic Recovery Bonnie Esty. “The incentive of a new bike is definitely a motivator to read,” commented Esty in an email. “Students get very excited when bikes are drawn and are always so happy for all the winners! I love seeing them cheer for others!” Earlier in the spring, kin-

This bike giveaway program is now essentially statewide with all Masonic lodges participating. In 2019, ninety lodges in Maine awarded 3,000 bikes in elementary and middle schools plus some libraries. Lodge 142 members estimate that they have awarded 300 bikes to WES students thus far. Masonic members presenting the bikes at WES this year included Michael Cataldi, Ken Creed, John Howarth, and Tim Yates. Yates, currently the Master of Ocean Lodge 142, indicated that the bikes were

It’s really a good tool to get them started on good habits.” According to Yates, the bikes presented this year were ordered through Amazon at a cost of $8,000. The Maine Masonic Charitable Foundation donated $3,000 for the purchase with the balance coming from individual and local business donations. New Initiative Pays York County Schools to Start Outdoor Clubs

YORK COUNTY With the 2021-22 academic year just beginning, Maine school districts are searching for healthy ways for their students to return to school. One opportunity schools have embraced is a new partnership with Teens to Trails and the Maine Department of Education. The initiative, called Wilderness Activities and Virtual Engagement for Students (WAVES), is designed to encourage physical and mental well-being by participating in group outdoor activities through the creation of school Outdoor Clubs. Seed money for these clubs is offered by WAVES to Maine schools serving teens. To date,

almost 50 middle and high schools throughout the state have applied for the program. The application is easy, on purpose, to reduce barriers to getting youth connected to the outdoors. Maine DOE provides the money, schools identify an adult leader, and Teens to Trails provides year round training and program support. Middle School of the Kennebunks, Noble High School in North Berwick, Kennebunk High School, and Biddeford High School Alternative Pathway Center are four York County schools who were each awarded $500 to begin, or restart, outdoor clubs for their students. In all cases, the schools

were in search of financial support for transportation and outdoor gear. Studies have shown that spending time outside is critical for teenage development, as it fosters the need to care for themselves, others and the planet. Spending time outside also creates a healthy mind/ body balance and improves focus throughout the day. When teenagers enjoy open spaces, it helps to create open minds that are ripe for learning. All four schools hope to create successful outdoor clubs for their teenage students. Jacqui Holmes, a teacher at Kennebunk High School, is hoping the opportunity will encourage stu-

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, I use and work on a lot of different units. One of which is an old Dell Latitude C400 running Windows XP Pro SP3. The main issue I have with this unit is that all the windows and icons extend far beyond the screen. And the only menu offers at the to left corner is “Move or Close”. I cannot resize anything since all the settings, like DPI and monitor will not allow me to change anything, as the settings are all shaded out, even in Safe Mode. There was one time that everything went down in

size, and that was re-installing the video driver, but then the moment the unit was rebooted, all the windows and icons are way too large again. The screen is 12”, yet it displays everything like it should be a 22” monitor, if not larger. And with the windows so overblown out of proportion to the screen, I cannot access all of the windows, especially when there is no scroll bar and the movement stops when I run out of screen. I sincerely hope you can help me get things straightened away on this unit, as I cannot access anything

until I can see what I am doing. Thanks in advance for your help and looking forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely, Renee Dear Renee, It sounds like you might be able to fix this problem using the settings on your monitor instead of the settings in Windows. What you need to do, is find the adjustment buttons on the monitor itself. Most monitors have an “Auto” or “Auto Adjust” button. Press that and the monitor will sense the signal coming in and adjust itself so that the picture is centered on the screen and sized correctly. If that doesn’t work, use the other buttons on the monitor to manually adjust the size of the image on your screen. I can’t tell you exactly how to do this since it is different for each model of monitor, but look for the button that brings up a menu on the screen, and then use the adjustment buttons to navigate through that menu, select the settings you want to change,

and then make the adjustments. If you get stuck, try to find the manual that came with the monitor, or look up the model of the monitor online, and you can usually find a PDF version of the manual on the manufacturers website. I hope this helps, Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, When I am on FB and someone comments on something I posted but I am not looking at at the moment, the page pops up and will not leave. If I click on any spot or link the pop up page will not leave. How can I stop this. I have to get off FB and start over. If I open a new page on FB it is also there if the old page is still open. Thanks, Ann Dear Ann, I have not seen this behavior on a comment to a post, only with messenger chats. Have you tried hovering your mouse over the upper right corner of the pop up page to see if an X to close the pop up appears? That is how I close the messenger windows. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I understand that Microsoft

is supporting Internet Explorer less and that many websites find it incompatible and prefer other browsers. I’m not ready to give up my IE to go with Edge, so I’m considering the advice you’ve given to many -- download and install an additional browser. In the case of any additional nonMicrosoft browser, what else should I do (if anything) besides simply downloading and installing the alternate browser? Are there any security programs I’d need to know about? (Such as the security updates I currently do for IE) Any add- ons I’d need to do, such as Flash Player or Adobe Reader specific to the second browser? (I already have them for IE). Thank you for all that you do, Lucille Dear Lucille, First, I just want to mention that you can still use Internet Explorer in Windows 10, it is still included, you just have to search for it. Then, if you are interested in any additional non-microsoft browsers, here is the best way to install them and keep them updated. 1. Go to www.ninite.com Here you will see a list of free software that you can download and install. Ninite is a great place to get your software because it installs it without installing any of the unwanted toolbars or advertising software that frequently sneaks in with free software. 2. In the section that says, “Pick the apps you want”, click to check off the web browsers you are interested in downloading. 3. In the “Runtimes” section, click to select any add-ons you want to install as well. Adobe reader does not need to be installed for each browser, if you already have it, you are all set. 4. Click the blue button that says, “Get Your Ninite” and save the file on your desktop. It will be named with the names of the programs you selected above. 5. Once that file has been saved to your desktop, double click it to run it. The first time you run the file, it will download and install the apps you selected. 6. Keep that file on your desktop, and double click to run it every few weeks or so. It will automatically update the See COMPUTERS page 20...

SPRINGVALE More than fifty paintings by Ray-Welch, folk artist of Maine, will be on view at the Sanford-Springvale Historical Museum, 505 Main Street in Springvale on Fridays and Saturdays through the end of the year. The exhibit opens with a reception at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 16 at the museum. Facemasks are recommended. Ray Welch (1915–1996) was a mill worker and musician in Sanford and North Berwick who began by painting watercolor scenes in 1957 and quickly moved to oil panels the next year. Like so many other self-trained artists he specialized in aspects of his own remembered past. Such scenes became popular because of the work of Grandma Moses (Anna Mary Robertson Moses) from the 1940s until her death

in 1961. Welch was even called ‘Grandpa Moses’ by his early customers. His work depicts village scenes, family events, farm life and childhood sports including swimming in the Mousam River and skating on the river during winter months. Several large paintings show masses of people outside circus tents. Others depict an auction in progress, children playing in a school yard, a baseball game, men haying, and other scenes too numerous to mention. From the early 1970s Marjorie Brass, an antiques dealer in Kennebunkport who sold his paintings there and in New York, represented the artist. Perhaps for that reason, although Bob Bishop owned at least one of Ray Welch’s paintings, he never brought his work to New York like he had for Rose Labrie, another “primitive” memory painter in Portsmouth, NH. Collectors and curators, Robert Chase and Richard Candee of York, assembled this

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Joyce Amend Awarded Arts Commission Grant YORK York artist Joyce Amend has been awarded the Maine Arts Commission Springboard Artist Grant for 2021. The grant supports Amend’s focus on producing a substantial body of show-worthy acrylic fluid artworks that will become the primary feature of her upcoming solo exhibit. Amend’s collection of work, titled “Pouring My Art Out” involves the creation of abstract images with fluid mediums, and is sometimes referred to as pour painting, flow art, or liquid acrylics. Acrylic fluid art produces unexpected and dramatic results, allowing the artist to manipulate the outcome to some extent. There are many techniques that encompass this artform, including flip cup, puddle pour, “dirty” pour, swiping, tree ring, string pull, Dutch pour, dip pour, and balloon smash. Fluid art is unique in that it awakens a creative response by those who view it. Creating the paintings requires discipline and a true sense of value, color, and balance. Amend is self-taught in the basic techniques, in addition to studying with professional mentors who specialize in this exciting art. “Once I discovered fluid art painting, I was hooked!” says Amend. “There is something magical about free-flowing compositions spontaneously evolving into beautiful abstract artworks. I begin with a specific color palette, fusing it as liquified colors. Using any of a variety of systematic methods, an explosion of colors results! Then the flowing colors are manipulated until a pleasing and exciting composition develops, with a focus on movement and design. Some of my art is layered with a glass-like resin that enhances the overall beauty of the piece. Living on the Maine seacoast, I am continually inspired to create exciting artwork that reflects the surrounding

beauty”. Fluid art has been around since the 1930s with pioneer David Alfaro Siqueiros, who then called his creations “accidental painting”. Amend’s “Pouring My Art Out” exhibit will be at the Morgan Gallery, located in the Kittery Community Center, 120 Rogers Rd, Kittery, from September 10 through December 15. An Opening Reception for the show is scheduled for Thursday, September 16, 5:50-7 p.m. The public is invited to attend the free event. Joyce Amend lives on the beautiful seacoast of Maine. She earned her BS degree at Cabrini University, PA; then received her Master’s degree in Visual Art at Wesleyan University, CT. Before relocating to York, she taught art in Connecticut schools and was the recipient of various grants awarded by the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, the State of Connecticut, and the Hartford Education Foundation. New England fishing village for the new musical that’s based on the beloved 1988 rom-com that launched Julia Roberts’ stellar career. It’s about sisters Kat and Daisy Araujo and their friend Jojo Barbosa, three PortugueseAmerican teenagers working as waitresses at Mystic Pizza, a popular eatery owned by the motherly Leona in seaside Mystic, Connecticut. Equal doses of love, laughter, jealousy, sibling rivalry and heartbreak perk up the lively show, as these three workingclass girls navigate the complexities of life, class and family in the pizza joint that serves everyone from die-hard townies to the privileged country club set. There’s even a famous food critic, who wanders in unannounced one day, tastes Leona’s secret sauce and gives the pizza his highest rating. That starts the phone ringing off the hook, and keeps the place open just as Leona is set to sell it. The show is set to a tunefilled soundtrack of ‘80s hits from the likes of Cyndi Lauper, Prince, John Mellencamp, Huey Lewis, Debbie Gibson and Robert Palmer. At last Friday’s

opening, I couldn’t stop singing, swaying and tapping my feet to the songs that my kids danced to as teens and that I loved myself. The on-stage rock ‘n roll band pumped out the music, one song after another, like a jukebox playing non-stop hits in some pizza palace — “Freeway of Love,” “Addicted to Love,” “Take My Breath Away,” “Power of Love,” “I Think We’re Alone Now,” “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” “Manic Monday,” “All I Need is a Miracle,” and “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” for starters. And the talented cast brings them to life, adeptly weaving the music into a script that’s true to the movie’s plot. The leads bring girl power and then some to “Mystic Pizza.” Krystina Alabado plays boy crazy Daisy, the Julia Roberts character, to the hilt. She’s the older sister to the more studious

(and Mom’s favorite) Kat, played understatedly by Kyra Kennedy. The actresses do their characters justice — but Gianna Yanelli steals every scene as their friend Jojo, the libidinous, comical tart. She passes out at the altar in the show’s opening scene, unable to commit to “til death do us part” to Bill, her oafish fisherman boytoy, played to over-the-top perfection by Garrett Marshall. Their antics alone are worth the price of admission. The “Mystic Pizza” creative team includes director Casey Hushion, choreographer Liz Ramos, music director Kristin Stowell, a book by Sandy Rustin and music supervision and orchestrations by Carmel Dean. Let’s hear it for these talented ladies. It’s not for young kids, since it has adult themes, language and situations. But my teenage granddaughters, ages 15 and 13, loved it. I did, too — a great girls night out and further proof that girls just wanna have fun. But bring the boys in your life. They’ll love it, too. Underwater Landscapes Webinar AUGUSTA Canyons, valleys, and rocky landscapes make up most of the Gulf of Maine’s dynamic seafloor. Using bottom sampling, cores and remote-sensing, and geophysical tools, researchers have spent years mapping the region. Amongst the areas dominated by rock, stretches of sand, gravel, and muddy basins range from Massachusetts to Maine. Some of these muddy areas are charged with natural gas and erupt from time to time. Near the Bay of Fundy, strong currents have stripped much of the sediment from the bottom and left a boulder-armored plain. Join Dr. Joe Kelley, a Professor of Marine Geology at the University of Maine, to learn more about underwater landscapes on Friday, September 17, 12-1 p.m. For more information and to register for this interesting online webinar, go to www. maineconservation.org.

~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Squeak is a lovely brown tiger with white markings who needs an experienced cat person to call her own. This sweet kitty is shy, and needs someone patient to nurture her confidence to develop into the calm, friendly kitty she has revealed to a select few. Squeak loves to splash her paws in her water dish, and she likes to play and will jump onto your lap, but not just anyone’s lap. She needs a quiet home with no children or other pets. Squeak will blossom sooner if not challenged by loud, fast-moving family members. With time and the relaxed joy of a daily routine, the comfort and safety of a quiet home, love and encouragement, this 4-5 year-old will bloom beautifully. To learn more about her and schedule a meeting, please

the front of my room when we saw another plane. We watched in horror as we saw it disappear into the other tower and then explode through the other side. I didn’t hear anyone gasp or even breathe. I just heard total silence from my class who was supposed to be taking a chemistry test. The test no longer had any importance. In a few seconds I heard one of my students exclaim, “Independence Day”. He had just spoken what they must have all been thinking. This couldn’t be real. It was never supposed to be real. We were promised that it would never be real. We watched as two of our nation’s grandest architectural marvels burned and filled the sky with smoke. We watched more of our nation’s finest run toward what seemed unreal. They did it because they were trained to do so. They did it because they wanted to. The commentators bellowed this was the worse kind of terrorist attack and that it could not be happening in our nation. All of us in my room heard little from the television located on the wall behind my desk in the front of my room. We only saw what was happening. The silence in my room was replaced by short almost silent sighs. I am not sure if it was coming from my students or from me. The pictures that were

coming from my television located on the wall behind my desk at the front of my room now started to show something else. The fiery towers were no longer billowing smoke above a city that was never supposed to sleep. The pictures now showed another building in flames. A shorter building that was thought to be more powerful than any other building in the history of life. A building that was now broken and in flames. Once again my students and I watched brave men and women with unknown faces and names run toward the building in order to help. In order to do the jobs they were trained to do. They wore thick black coats with bright yellow stripes, some with tanks draped across their back. They did not hesitate. They ran toward something they knew they had never seen before. They ran toward the disaster because that was what they were supposed to do. “Are we at war, Mr. Fabiano?” I looked up and stared into the eyes of a large young man who appeared to be both afraid and angry. Before I could answer him I noticed that my entire class was staring at me and waiting for my reply. They all had faces and names I knew. They were all destined to become the family leaders of tomorrow and the people that are trained to go into places

...911 from page 1 their day will be filled with unspeakable horror. Their defining moment will include hate, fear, and disbelief. My day started like all my other days. I was concerned with things that now have little importance. I was giving a test in one of my chemistry courses when my computer reported that one of the towers in New York City had been hit. I felt sorrow that such an accident could occur. But, it was an accident and accidents happen all the time. I decided to turn on a television that was located on the wall behind my desk at the front of my room. My real day and new life began. Another defining moment in my life had begun. A new defining moment for my students was about to be born. We watched in disbelief. The test no longer existed. The silence in the room was overcome by the crackled sounds coming from my old television located on the wall at the front of my room. One of my students came to my desk and asked if this was real. I told her it was and in her eyes I saw a bit of hate because I didn’t tell her that this was some special affect from an old disaster movie. As she returned to her seat all I could say was, “I’m sorry”. We then watched as one of the towers burned. We watched brave men and women with unknown faces and names run toward the building in order to help. In order to do the jobs they were trained to do. They wore thick black coats with bright yellow stripes, some with tanks draped across their back. They didn’t hesitate. They ran toward something they knew they had never seen before. simply to help other people. Before I could answer I watched all of their eyes reach toward the television located on the wall behind my desk at the front of my room. They watched with their mouths opened and in an attempt to close their minds as the spiked steeples above the burning towers started to spiral in a macabre kind of dance that made them disappear into a dense translucent fog. I knew I didn’t have to answer the question. It was answered for us all. The rest of my day was filled with the times that will be forever etched in all our minds. We watched the husbands and wives of families working to make the people they were responsible for safe and comfortable disappear. We watched the children of families whose hard work and perseverance made them their family’s pride being forced to leave their lives. We watched the grandparents who were almost ready to live out their lives doing something they had dreamed they could do never realize their dream because they were destined by someone else not to do so. I just couldn’t do it. I just couldn’t express what I was feeling in words. I still can’t. Jim Fabiano is a retired teacher and writer living in York. You can reach Jim at james.fabiano60@gmail.com.

Tips on Buying Home Gym Equipment NATIOWIDE During the pandemic, many consumers found ways to work out at home instead of going to the gym. Setting up a home gym is a great way to stay in shape without coming into contact with others, but the equipment can be costly. What do you need to know to make good purchasing decisions and stay within budget? The following tips from the Better Business Bureau can help: How to Choose & Purchase Home Gym Equipment Consider your physical needs. Any equipment you buy should match up with your objectives and interests – otherwise you may not use the equipment after the initial excitement wears off. If you have any existing health conditions, such as heart disease, arthritis, or a back injury, be sure to check with your doctor about what kind of exercises and equipment are safe for you to use. Set a budget. Review your budget and see how much you can afford to spend on home gym equipment, factoring in the money you’ll save if you terminate your gym membership. The National Academy of Sports Medicine and Consumer Reports have useful guides that can help you choose the right equipment for your specific budgeted amount. Measure your space. Measure your space carefully to see if specific pieces of equipment will fit. Don’t forget to measure any entryways the equipment must fit through to reach your home gym space as well. Read consumer reviews. Read multiple reviews from several retailers and pay close attention to any comments about the quality of the equipment and the experience with the retailer. Reference these comments when making a final purchasing decision. Beware of “get fit quick” solutions. Maintaining physical health is a long-term endeavor that will require effort. If a seller says their equipment will get you in shape with little to no effort, a healthy dose of skepticism is advised. If possible, test equipment before you buy. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends wearing exercise clothes and athletic shoes to try out exercise equipment before you buy it. Many brick and mortar stores have

display equipment you can try before you make a purchase. Make sure you can operate and feel comfortable using any equipment you plan on adding to your home gym. Compare prices. Since exercise equipment is often sold by multiple retailers, compare prices between sporting goods stores and manufacturers. You can also consider purchasing used equipment, but proceed with caution. Most second-hand equipment is purchased “as-is,” and sales are often final with no option to return. Understand delivery options. Read carefully or talk directly to a sales representative to find out how much shipping costs, what delivery fees you can expect to pay, and whether or not the delivery person will set up the equipment for you. See GYM page 30...

Weekly Recipe: Grilled Tomatoes on Soda Bread Tomato Ingredients: 6 medium tomatoes cut into 1-inch thick slices 4 thick slices of soda bread, 1-inch thick Balsamic vinegar, for drizzling Salt and fresh ground pepper Shredded Parmesan cheese Olive oil or Truffle oil for coating the tomatoes

Directions: Coat griddle pan with a bit of oil and brush it evenly before placing the tomatoes on it. Get it nice and hot and place the tomatoes on it for two minutes per side or until the tomatoes have softened and start to have black edges. Or line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil, coat with oil, place tomatoes on it and broil each side until soft. When the edges begin to have color, 2-3 minutes, turn over and repeat the cooking time, about 4-6 minutes total. Lightly toast soda bread. Place each slice on a plate and cover with 3-4 cooked slices of tomatoes. Drizzle a bit of Balsamic Vinegar to taste and the sprinkle with shredded Parmesan cheese. If there is any juice in pan from the tomatoes, pour it over

the tomatoes, salt and pepper to taste and serve.

Irish Soda Bread Ingredients: 4 cups of all-purpose flour 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon of baking soda 2 teaspoons of baking powder 1 teaspoon of salt ¼ cup of sugar 1/4 cup of corn oil 1¼ cups butter milk 2 teaspoons of caraway seeds 2 tablespoons of milk 1 cup of raisins, golden if possible but black will do

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease bread pan or cook on a cookie sheet. In a large bowl, stir in flour, sugar,

baking soda, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, beat eggs, buttermilk, and oil together. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the butter milk mixture. Add caraway seeds and raisins. Stir well until a soft dough has formed. Shape dough into a large ball on a lightly floured board. Place on cookie sheet and make a cross on top or place in your bread pan and cut a line from the pans edges end to end. Brush the top with milk. Bake for 30-40 minutes, until golden brown. Place on a rack until the bread is cooled and serve.

FINANCE & CAREER Office of Tourism Receives Maine Becomes Economic Development Grant 4th State to Abolish Civil Forfeiture

AUGUSTA The Maine Office of Tourism has received a $2.4 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) to support the economic recovery of the state’s tourism and hospitality industry. The grant will enable the Office of Tourism to implement a comprehensive tourism and marketing program aimed at increasing tourist visits to Maine and spurring the economic recovery of hospitality businesses statewide. “Maine will use these federal funds to support the recovery of our tourism and hospitality businesses at the foundation of our economy and to ensure that our state is known globally as a world-

class destination,” said Steve Lyons, director of the Maine Office of Tourism. The strategic marketing campaign will position the state as a safe, four-season destination. Marketing projects will include conducting market research and analysis, developing and deploying multi-media advertising to geographically targeted audiences, and securing a qualified consultant to create a statewide sustainable tourism strategy to enhance visitor distribution statewide, encourage all-season visitation and assist destinations with the tools to create travel experiences that align with the desires of both visitors and residents. EDA grants are designed to help fulfill regional and eco-

nomic development strategies to increase innovation and entrepreneurship, spark regional competitiveness, create jobs, generate revenue and grow industry clusters. This grant is a part of the EDA’s Recovery and Resilience investment priority that aims to build and implement projects that foster resilience and long-term recovery from economic shocks. AUGUSTA Maine has become only the fourth state to abolish civil forfeiture. Civil forfeiture enables law enforcement to confiscate millions of dollars of property without ever filing criminal charges. Sponsored by Rep. Billy Bob Faulkingham (R-Winter Harbor), LD 1521, repeals Maine’s civil forfeiture laws, and bolsters its criminal forfeiture process. Under the new law, civil forfeiture is only authorized after a criminal conviction, with some narrow

exceptions (like death or deportation). “It’s a very simple concept; you don’t lose your property unless you used it in the commission of a crime, or knowingly allowed someone else to use it in the commission of a crime,” said Rep. Billy Bob Faulkingham. “This new law provides due process protection to property owners and helps ensure that only convicted criminals, not innocent Mainers, lose their property to forfeiture.”

using only Open Office (or Libre Office) for your spreadsheets, and it is even easier than you might think. Since OpenOffice can open excel spreadsheets, you don’t have to do any type of moving or converting. Just open the spreadsheet program in Open Office first, then use the, “File” and “Open” menu to open your excel spreadsheets that way. If you only use these spreadsheets on your own computer and don’t have any need to send them to others, then when you save your changes, you can convert it to the native Open Office spreadsheet format. If you need to send these spreadsheets to others, I would suggest saving them in excel format, .xls so that others will be able to open and read them in whatever program they are using. Elizabeth

Kieran C. (Kevin) Collins, 57 SANFORD – Kieran C. Collins of Shaw Street, passed away unexpectedly August 28, 2021 in Sanford. Kevin was born in Frankfort, Germany on January 19, 1964, the son of Kieran F. and Gerda (Koch) Collins. He was a 1982 graduate of Noble High School in Berwick, then served in the U. S. Navy. Kevin worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in supplies for many years. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. Kevin also liked to work on cars and fix up campers. Kevin had re-dedicated himself back to the Lord and loved watching Christian movies. He will be sorely missed by his wife, Carol. He was predeceased by his THANK YOU ST. We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

Collins, Jr.; wife of 19 years, Carol (Nielsen) Collins; two daughters, Caroline and Anna Collins; and three grandchildren, Joel, Kylee and Zoey. A time of visitation was held on Thursday, September 9, 5-7 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick. A memorial service will be held Friday, September 10 at 6 p.m. at the Bible Speaks, 26 Paul Street, South Berwick. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick. Condolences may be expressed at www. johnsonfuneralhomeme.com. • • • • • • • • • •

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Jane Clements Stevens, 76 OGUNQUIT – Jane Clements Stevens passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on August 8, 2021. She was born May 15,1945 in Lawrence, MA, to Phillip and Eleanor (Thompson) Clements. Jane graduated from Kents Hill School in Readfield. She was married to Lawrence “Larry” Edward Stevens on March 18, 1982. She and Larry owned and operated North Village Fuel in Ogunquit for more than 40 years and the beloved River Lily Farm since 1992. The farm was originally established in 1672 and is devotedly cared for by Jane’s son, Phillip.

Jane was known for her enchanting charm and sense of humor. She was an avid animal lover and will be deeply missed by her Labradors, Harry and Bailey. Jane loved relaxing poolside, playing cards, enjoying a good cocktail, and hosting friends at the farm. Her love for her son Phillip and granddaughter Lindsey was larger-than-life; they will miss her with their whole hearts each day. Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Eleanor Thompson and Phillip Clements; husband Larry Stevens; and brotherin-law John Standish. She is survived by her son Phillip Perry and granddaughter Lindsey Perry, both of Ogunquit; stepmother Helen “Nora” Clements of York; sister Carol Clements Standish of Kennebunk; and nieces, Elana and Jesse. She will be profoundly missed by her close friends Kelly and Jack Whitney, and Reggie and Betsy Chase, among many others.

shoes are recommended. Tours begin promptly at the Lindsay Road entrance to the museum center. Because tour sizes are limited, if you do not check in by the start of your tour time, your ticket may be released to someone on the waiting list. Refunds can not be issued within 24 hours of the event.

Inquire about fitness equipment returns, refund policies, and warranties. Retailers may now have special restrictions for delivery and returns so before placing an order, find out if a retailer has a return policy, if refunds are available and how they are issued, what the return process is, who pays for return shipping, how much it costs for heavy gym equipment, and if you will be charged a restocking fee. Inspect equipment before purchasing or upon delivery. Before you take equipment home, make sure it is in perfect condition with no defects. The same goes for receiving a delivery. If you notice the equipment is missing pieces or damage, you aren’t obligated to accept it. Understand in-store financing before you agree to it. Find out how long the financing lasts, how much interest you will pay, and whether there is a fee to pay the balance in full early. If a retailer offers you a rent-to-own plan, read the FTC’s advice on renting to own. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.

A celebration of Jane’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 12 at River Lily Farm in Ogunquit. Rain date: September 19 at 2 p.m.
