Capriccio Festival of Kites: 20 Years and Still Flying OGUNQUIT The 20th Annual Capriccio Festival of Kites will be held on Saturday September 8 on the Ogunquit Beach from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Capriccio Festival of Kites was started in 1997 by Ogunquit Selectman Larry Smith using his $1000 selectman’s salary. That first year he gave away over 150 kites. Since that time over 6000 kites have been given away to children to
decorate and fly. Larry himself took up kite flying after being challenged by a friend and flew a kite every day for 555 days. During that span, he flew a kite in 15 states and 10 countries to promote kite flying and the Capriccio Festival of Kites. This year over 300 kites will be given away to kids to decorate and fly and at noon there will be a mass ascension of all the kites and prizes will be awarded for many different art
and fun categories. Professional kite fliers from the American Kitefliers Association (AKA) and Kites over New England (KONE) and the Nor’Easters will be on the beach flying wonderful, colorful kites, large and small for all to enjoy. Volunteers from AKA, KONE, the Nor’Easters and the Ogunquit Rotary Club will be on hand to help the chilSee KITES page 18...

Fundraising Efforts for Emergency Responders ELIOT The Eliot Firefighters Association is conducting a fundraising campaign through direct donations for the purpose of purchasing several Thermal Imaging Cameras for emergency responders. These cameras will primarily assist the firefighters in locating occupants in a structure with limited or no visibility due to smoke conditions. The cameras utilize Infa Red Technology in detecting different heat levels. People and even animals show on a camera screen as outlines
of who they are searching for. A very valuable tool when time is of the essence. The goal is to provide a camera for every firefighter that would be riding a fire truck to the scene of an incident. They can also be used for search and rescue operations, initial building conditions and any operation that has a heat signature. Our deepest gratitude goes to Sam and his family and friends for seeing the need and sponsoring the kick off event. Every residence and business in Eliot has received a
