Our goal is to enrich lives and provide networking with like-minded ‘over 50’ seniors.” Since its inception several years ago, the Senior College curriculum has offered classes on politics, religion, history, music, writing, flower arranging, art, skin care and current events. “Anything that piques the interest of our audience,” Kaan adds. This fall students can enjoy a six-session class called “Swing’s the Thing” that celebrates the history of jazz and swing. Or they might settle into a favorite armchair with a cup of coffee, at home, while listening to a discussion on Kenneth Robert’s

With no grades or tests, students experience the pure enjoyment of learning and revitalizing their brainwaves. The cost is modest — yearly membership at the Senior College is $25 and each class costs $27. Currently due to COVID-19 considerations, every class is on Zoom which also means sweatpants are most acceptable. The savvy volunteers who teach and lecture come with significant credentials. The Maine Land Protection grant program provides grants for land acquisition or land conservation easement projects. “The Maine outdoors is a uniquely special place, and we believe all of us should feel welcome to enjoy and connect with all it has to offer,” says MaineCF Senior Program Officer Maggie Drummond-Bahl. “Maine Land Protection grants help us preserve these special places that strengthen our communities and our connection to the natural world.” Last year the grant program awarded $250,000 to eight organizations across Maine. Grantees included Kittery Land Trust Inc. to support preserving 30 acres for use as an outdoor center for students, volunteers, teachers, farmers, and diverse residents of the town. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Final Weeks of The Art of Mending Exhibit KENNEBUNK The Brick Store Museum’s summer exhibit, “The Art of Mending,” curated by Illustration Institute (of Portland), runs through September 5. The exhibit, which opened in June, features works of art that reflect on three kinds of mending: practical mending or restoring of an object, the aesthetic mending that comes from art that has a healing effect, and cultural mending or art that engages the community in a conversation about healing. Given the range of ideas about mending the organizers wanted to include, the artworks range widely, too. Artist and photographer Joshua Dixon, who studied at Maine College of Art, was attacked by two pit bulls when he was eight years old and has undergone 59 surgeries to reconstruct his face. He has poignant photos of himself in the exhibit. “I am cathartically releasing my emotions; to create an empathic space where I and the audience can develop conversations regarding our society,” he wrote in his artist statement for the exhibit. Artist Michael Velliquette created a colorful, exuberant creature out of cut paper figures, some shaped like hands. The artist’s statement says that in the piece “the notion of ‘mending’ manifests through the emotional catharsis of the figures’ gestures and expressions – whereby the release of strong emotion can have healing and restorative effects.” Painter Edith Vonnegut, daughter of author Kurt Vonnegut, has done paintings of various essential workers, the folks who kept clocking in when the world shut down. These include a postal worker and store clerk.

The exhibit, which includes nearly 30 artists of all types of media, will close on Sunday, September 5. The Museum, located at 117 Main Street, Kennebunk, is open Tuesday-Friday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., and Sunday 12-4 p.m. General admission is $5. Children under 16, veterans and active duty military, and museum members are free.

Tenant for Historic George Marshall Store YORK Old York Historical Society (OYHS) is pleased to announce that Marker Buoy Productions L3C are the new tenants of the historic George Marshall Store property at 140 Lindsay Road in York. The company will develop socially beneficial projects from the upper-level office, and maintain an art gallery on the main and dock-level spaces. The gallery will operate under the name George Marshall Store Gallery. Directed by Kate Rasche, the gallery will focus on changing exhibitions of emerging and midcareer artists from Maine and New England, and occasional creative projects with interdisciplinary collaborators. Programming will be driven by a commitment to support and advance the careers of regional creators, while enriching the area’s cultural landscape. Rasche, originally from York, is an artist and arts administrator with more than a decade of industry experience. From the building’s upperlevel, Marker Buoy Productions will develop documentary films and creative work focused on the subject of threatened natural and human environments. Their projects will draw upon an established group of internationally recognized partners and collaborators in the fields of journalism, photography, and videography. “We are very excited about this new chapter for the George Marshall Store,” says Joel Lefever, OYHS executive director. “It was important for Old York to find a tenant whose mission compliments our own. We are also very happy that there will be a contemporary art presence there too, as the exhibitions organized by former gallery curator Mary Harding were such a popular component of the Old York community.” The George Marshall Store Gallery will open next month with a group exhibition of artists with close ties to Maine, “And Now: Kristy Cavaretta, Danny Mendola, Tara Morin, Cat Quattrociocchi, Karina Steele, Graham Walton,” on view September 2 - October 14. A slow opening will be held Saturday, September 4, 12-5 p.m. For more information, visit www.georgemarshallstoregallery.com.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady I love your column, I always file it away just in case I have a problem. Can I set up my gmail account in MS Outlook, if so, how can I do this? Regards, Ali Dear Ali, You can get your Gmail in any email program that supports IMAP. I get mine in Thunderbird, and it works great. In order to do this, you need to go to your Gmail settings and find a couple of things. To get started, click on the gear icon in the upper-right corner of your Gmail window, then click on settings in the menu. Across the top of the settings page, you will see a row of blue text with things like, Labels, Inbox, etc. Find the text that says, “Forwarding and POP/ IMAP” and click on that. In the section labeled, “IMAP Access:” click to enable IMAP, then click the “Save Changes” button. From there, you will see a link to “Configuration Instructions” at the bottom. Follow the
directions for your version of Outlook and you should be all set. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a fairly new computer and its running very slow. There is plenty of room on the hard drive so I just don’t understand. One of my daughters friends said that the memory may be full. What’s the difference between the memory and the hard drive? Also can I clean out the memory? Thanks so much for your help in advance, I have learned a lot from your column.... Keep it up! Pam Dear Pam, There are two different kinds of memory in your computer. One, is memory that is used for storage, usually that is your hard drive. When your hard drive gets too full, your computer will slow down, however, with the large hard drives in systems these days, that is not usually an issue. The other type of memory is working memory, usually

referred to as RAM memory. RAM cannot hold onto information when the power is off, so it gets cleared out and re-loaded each time you restart your computer. That is why re-booting your computer often fixes problems. There are two ways you can speed up your computer if the RAM is too full. One is to purchase more RAM, and the other is to stop some of the programs that are loading when the computer boots. When you are running Windows, you really want to have at least 8GB of RAM in your computer. If you use your computer for photo and/or video editing, you want to have even more. I currently have 32GB of RAM in my computer, which keeps it running nice and fast. If you have plenty of RAM, but your computer is running slower and slower, you have too many programs loading when your computer starts. Take a look at the icons in your system tray, located in the lower right of your screen. Are there more than
5 or 6 icons there? They all represent programs that are loaded in memory and running the whole time you use your computer. There can also be other programs running that didn’t put an icon in the system tray. To see all the items that are loading when your computer starts, open the task manager. You can open it easily by pressing Ctrl, Alt and Del on your keyboard at the same time, or just tap the start button and type, task manager. Once in the task manager, click on the “Startup” tab, and you will see a long list of items. Every item that is enabled is running. To stop items from running the next time you start your computer, just click once on the item, then click the “Disable” button in the lower-right corner of the window. Your changes will take place when you restart your computer. You can turn off any items you wish, but some you will want to keep running, especially, things like your antivirus. All of a sudden I cannot copy and paste. I can highlight but as soon as I take my finger off the highlight goes away. I write a lot and copy for others. Hope you can help? Arthur Dear Arthur, It sounds like either the mouse or keyboard is not working right. If one of the arrow keys on your keyboard was stuck, this would cause your highlighting to go away. Or, if the mouse button was stuck, it would also remove highlighting. If you are using a desktop computer, try replacing the mouse and/or keyboard to see if one of them is causing the problem. If you are using a laptop, you might have to disable the built in touchpad and/or keyboard and plug in a USB replacement to see if that is causing the problem. Let me know if this helps solve your problem. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have several videos I have from my cellphone etc. and I would like to change the videos to avi so when I burn to dvd’s I can play it in all devices. Please advise. Thank you, Kay Dear Kay, What you need in order to burn DVDs that play in all devices is a software program made to author movie DVDs. A movie DVD that plays in all devices is not made by just burning a file onto the disk, you need to create, or author the DVD specifically for playing movies. I have used Roxio Creator to author DVDs in the past, and it has worked great. There are probably other programs available as well, but I don’t have experience authoring DVDs with them. Here are just a few: Cyberlink Power Director, Magix Movie Edit Pro, Nero Video Pro. I hope this helps, Elizabeth

In addition to the physician and pharmacy-led financial contributions, members of the Friends of York Hospital contribute annual dues and conduct a popular Basket Raffle each December to increase the scholarship awards. The Friends of York Hospital Scholarship Program has been helping students achieve their higher education goals since 1962. Applicants must be high school seniors who plan to enter a medical/health care field and who graduate from a high school located in the York Hospital service area comprised of Kittery, Eliot, the Berwicks, Sanford, Lebanon,

Maine Home Sales Outpace Pre-COVID Numbers AUGUSTA Home buyers are still out in force across Maine’s 16 counties. According to Maine Listings, home sales decreased 4.86 percent and prices rose 23.58 percent comparing July 2021 to July 2020. The median sales price (MSP) for the 1,996 homes sold hit $315,000 last month. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. “July’s sales volume figures continue to outpace the pre-COVID numbers from 2019,” says Aaron Bolster, Broker/Owner of Allied Realty in Skowhegan and 2021 President of the Maine Association of REALTORS®. “Though showing a decline from July 2020 of just under five percent, the July 2021 sales volume is seven percent ahead of July 2019.” The National Association of Realtors today reported a nationwide sales dip of 0.8 percent for single-family existing homes in July 2021 compared
to July 2020. Prices across the country increased 18.6 percent to a national MSP of $367,000. Regionally, sales in the Northeast rose 12.1 percent comparing July 2021 to July 2020, while the regional MSP increased 23.6 percent to $411,200 over that same time period. “Supply, demand, and price are the three concepts to watch,” says Bolster. “Demand for homes in Maine continues to be strong,
still out-pacing the available forsale inventory in many markets across Maine, resulting in rising sold price values. “For the fourth consecutive month, we’ve seen improving for-sale supply numbers. Active single-family listings were up 7.9 percent during July 2021 compared to June 2021, and up 67.3 percent from the March 2021 low. This is good news for prospective Maine home buyers.”
Rear row, left to right: Friends of York Hospital members: Judith McAllister, Diane Williams and Marie Aimo. Front row seated, left to right: scholarship recipients Olivia Kallay and Raya Anderson.
Sophia Roe - is a graduate of York High School and will attend Northeastern University to major in Public Health. During her high school years, Sophia was on the high honor roll and received the Maine Society of Engineers Award, as well
as AP Scholar with Honor and the Highest Achievement in French. She played varsity volleyball and is an accomplished violin and clarinet player - often volunteering to play for residents at Kittery Estates.
Nearly $5.6M for Apprenticeships WASHINGTON, D.C. This funding was awarded through the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) State Apprenticeship Expansion, Equity, and Innovation (SAEEI) Grants Program. “Apprenticeship programs provide Mainers with invalu-

closed a small incision with stunning precision. From a nearby console, a doctor manipulates a set of controls while a 3D video of the surgery plays on a screen in real time. Each twist and turn of the surgeon’s hand is perfectly mimicked by the robot with total accuracy; each of its movements seamless and smooth. Even Isaac Asimov couldn’t have made up something like this. Meet Southern Maine Health Care’s newest addition to the surgical team: Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci Xi Surgical System. Da Vinci Xi is an innovative robotic surgical assistant that enhances the natural capabilities of doctors by giving unobstructed access to a patient on an ultra-refined level. This complex surgical system uses leading-edge technology that allows doctors to remotely perform complicated surgeries
through the arms of the robot. SMHC’s specially-trained doctors perform surgery through the da Vinci Xi with a hand-held device that tracks and translates the movements of their hands to the robot’s specialized instruments. For doctors, this means clarity and control over the procedure -- not to mention a crystal clear 3D view of the surgery site. For patients, this means a noninvasive surgical option with less scarring, decreased pain, and a minimized risk of post-surgical complications. The da Vinci Xi’s light arms and extended range of motion offer greater access to the body than traditional surgery, improving doctors’ reach and accuracy during complicated procedures. Plus, the da Vinci’s integrated table automatically moves pa-
tients into the optimal position, cutting down on any unnecessary strain on the doctor – or patient. Robot-assisted surgery is far from science fiction – it’s a reality at Southern Maine Health Care and it’s offering patients a cutting-edge, non-invasive alternative for a number of different surgeries. By harnessing the natural talents of surgeons, Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci Xi Surgical System offers peace of mind for patients with the knowledge they’re in the hands of one of the most advanced robotics systems on earth. Erica Place (middle photo), formerly branch manager in Dover, is stepping in at Eliot, while former assistant branch manager in Portsmouth, NH, Dory Polanco (right photo) is stepping up to manage the Dover location. “We are fortunate to be able to tap a fantastic employee base to provide additional opportunities here at the bank. Timothy was born April 13, 1957, in Malden, MA, the son of Earl W. Draper, Jr. and Thelma (Damon) Draper, and is a graduate of Saugus High School. Timothy began his working life on the sea, fishing out of Gloucester Harbor as an offshore lobsterman. While he loved being on the ocean, he didn’t want to be away from home for long stretches of time with a young family. He made the decision to come ashore and learned the trade of a pipefitter. He applied his skills with companies in Massachusetts and Maine, most recently Bath Iron Works in Bath. He was extremely proud of the quality workmanship exemplified at the shipyard. He was a father who always put family first and dedicated his life to teaching his children through his wisdom and experience. He enjoyed spending time outdoors boating, fishing, scuba diving, hunting and gardening. He also loved the Boston Bruins, cooking, collecting guns and reading, where he had the ability to read multiple books at the same time. Dear and devoted father of Dr. Timothy S. Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Secretary. She married John Joseph Graham and raised their family, three sons, and a daughter, in York. Eunice-Anne loved York history and was quick to provide stories of her family’s rich ancestry and heritage in her beloved town. Some of her favorites were the family’s ties leading back to the founding Marshalls, Levitts, and Moultons, just to name a few. For example, the Marshall House was part of the family for years and a well-known landmark in the York community, as was her grandfather who was a State Senator. When Eunice-Anne told these stories, her joy, pride, and the love she felt was palpable. Eunice-Anne had a tremendous wealth of knowledge and would happily share with all who wanted to know. The stories will be missed by all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her husband John J. ~ Obituaries & News ~ ...PERRY from page 22 United States Air Force, passed away Friday, August 20, 2021, as a result of complications from pneumonia and the COVID-19 virus. John served his country throughout the world and most recently served the Veterans Military Honor Guard of Pigeon Forge as Vice Commander, Adjutant, Staff Sergeant At Arms, and Quartermaster. No greater love for country than had he. John was also an accomplished artist in several ways. He painted and loved playing and singing. John spent 39 years painting at York Beach at a place called Shelton’s. Throughout his career, John became an accomplished painter, and his paintings are displayed across the world. Several paintings were gifted to past U.S. Presidents and royalty around the world. His music abilities were his second passion, and were acknowledged by several major music icons, and John even got to tour with some. John was also a black belt in Wing Chung, and enjoyed engraving firearms where his artistry abilities left many in awe. John leaves behind the love of his life Elaine Perry, son John
R. Perry, Jr., brother William D. Perry and his wife Marilyn Perry, and numerous nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his dad Robert Lee Perry, mom Doree K. Perry, and sister Shelby Favrcau. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Veterans Military Honor Guard of Pigeon Forge, 2686 Teaster Lane, P.O. Box 1390, Pigeon Forge, TN 37868. The family received friends on Wednesday, August 25 followed by a funeral service in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville, TN. Inurnment will be in East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery in Knoxville, TN. Online condolences may be made at www. atchleyfuneralhome.com.
Bishop Deeley Visits Ogunquit OGUNQUIT “The traffic in town makes it difficult to get around sometimes, but what a nice place to be as we enjoy these days of summer, praise God for his goodness to us, and are strengthened, together, by the very presence of Christ in Holy Communion.” The words of Bishop Robert Deeley fell upon over 100 members of the Catholic community gathered at All Saints Church in Ogunquit on the hot evening of August 14. The weekend marked the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which celebrates Mary’s Assumption into heaven, body and soul, at the end of her earthly life. The stop in the beauti-
ful seaside community was the latest on a tour of summer mission churches that the bishop has made in recent weeks. Opened in 1917, All Saints is a part of Holy Spirit Parish (also St. Martha Church in Kennebunk and St. Mary Church in Wells), which gets even busier than normal during the warm months. “We had to go to the beach as close to the feast day as we could,” the bishop told the assembly during his homily on Saturday. “My mother told us that it was the belief that the water had a special healing grace through the intercession of Mary on her feast day. I later learned that the tradition is old. It may be Irish. It may be from elsewhere. It grew

around the story that as Our Lady was carried by the angels to heaven, she wept. Her tears landing in the waters made the water a healing place. Each year, people would return to the water believing that, on this feast, that blessing in the water was present once again.” ...MONEY from page 15

Emma’s Angels NORTH BERWICK Our handsome kitty of the week is Alphie! He is a two year old Orange Tabby looking for his happy home. Alphie is up to date on his vaccinations and neutered. Just a sweet boy. He has come to Maine from an overcrowded high kill shelter in Louisiana. Alphie has been combo tested and has a clean bill of health. If you would like to meet this Buff beauty, call Emma’s Angels Rescue at 207676-5599. Emma’s Angels is an all-volunteer, foster-based organization in North Berwick. Needed at this time.Dry (Nutrish) and wet (Pate) cat food. We have rescued many cats and kittens from Louisiana as they are in crisis mode right now. It can be left in our drop box at 30 Meeting House Road, North Berwick. Thank you in advance!

WELLS I’m sure our supporters and followers will remember Rocky, the 15 pound orange tiger stray Safe Haven rescued. He quickly showed signs of heart failure and was rushed to the emergency vet back in March. Many of you graciously donated money toward his expensive medical care, and we’re so thankful for your financial help. At that time, Rocky, age six, was diagnosed with heart disease. His prognosis: a shortened life span, anywhere from “any day now” to maybe two years at best. But over these past five months, our volunteer team at Cattail Farm faithfully followed all the medical requirements to keep Rocky’s health improving. All medications were given on time, and we carefully monitored any respiratory distress. Due to his shortened life expectancy, we decided to keep Rocky at the farmhouse with his
best buddy Lucas for the rest of his life. Lucas is Rocky’s BFF and often sits on top of Rocky, claiming him as his own, or snoozing, napping or engaging Rocky in play. Their friendship has touched everyone’s hearts because Lucas is quite shy, and Rocky is very friendly. They’re quite the Odd Couple. Rocky’s future plans were revised after he returned from his most recent trip to the cardiologist to reevaluate his heart. The findings were amazing! Rocky’s heart now appears to be strong and resilient. He only needs a single medication once daily, which he takes easily. The cardiologist agrees that there’s nothing to prevent Rocky from being adopted. Because Lucas and Rocky are such a perfect duo, they will be adopted together. Lucas, age 2½, is beautiful. He looks like a poster boy, with his long black and white coat.
He’s been Rocky’s faithful companion throughout his recovery. Lucas is shy, but Rocky makes him brave. He gives him courage to be outgoing and happy. We have found that they are best and happiest when together. Rocky and Lucas will be an incredible addition to a very fortunate and loving family, perhaps with older children and maybe even a cat-friendly dog. Both cats are amazing in their own ways and we can’t wait for you to meet them! Please call our Cattail Farmhouse shelter at 207849-0728. You can apply to adopt online at our website. Did you know our operating expenses are primarily supported by sales at our Thrift/Vintage/ Antique shop at 1784 Post Road, Wells. We’re open 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Wednesday thru Sunday. Donations are accepted on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. We’re currently seeking fall décor, and Christmas/winter theme items, beach, cottage and farmhouse décor. Quality kitch-

Moody Named Director of Athletics WELLS Earlier this summer WellsOgunquit CSD Superintendent James Daly approved a committee’s unanimous recommendation for Patrick Moody to serve as the district’s next Director of Athletics for Grades 6-12. The interview committee of nine representatives consisted of members of the WOCSD administration, coaching staff, teachers, parents, and students. “I am excited,” said Moody of his new position. “Excited to be here and to get going.” Moody is from Wells and is a 1983 graduate of Wells High School where he played varsity basketball. For seven years ending in 2018, he was a volunteer with the WHS Girls Basketball program. Moody has served in public education for thirty years as a high school mathematics teacher. He taught at Gorham High School for five years and next at Kennebunk High School for 25 years. Additionally, he has served on several committees throughout his years in education including the New England Association of Schools and Colleges Accreditation, scholarship and book award committees, and other school support committees. Moody has been the recipient of the Amos McCallum Award and the Spencer Trask Award. These recognitions
honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to athletics and who demonstrate a strong dedication to education. Throughout his career in education, Moody has demonstrated a commitment to student-athletes in the communities that he has served in. He has an array of coaching experience in various athletic programs that span middle school to the college level. He holds a strong belief in the importance of building relationships with all facets of the school community and is a welcomed addition to the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District. Photo and story by Reg Bennett.
A Guide to Disc Golf Disc golf is played much like golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, though, players use a flying disc or Frisbee¬Æ. The sport was formalized in the 1970s and shares with golf the object of completing each hole in the fewest strokes (or, in the case of disc golf, fewest throws). A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target, which is the “hole.” The hole can be one of a number of disc golf targets; the most common is an elevated metal basket. As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive throw from the spot where the previous throw landed. The trees, shrubs, and terrain changes located in and around the fairways provide challenging obstacles for the golfer. Finally, the “putt” lands in the basket and the hole is completed. Disc golf shares the same joys and frustrations of golf, whether it’s sinking a long putt or hitting a tree halfway down the fairway. There are a few differences, though: Disc golf is often free to play in public parks, although pay-to-play courses are trending upward; you probably won’t need to rent a cart, but converted golf course layouts are also on the rise; and your “tee time” will usually come during tournament competition, not casual play. Disc golf is designed to be
enjoyed by people of all ages, gender identity, and economic status, making it a great lifetime fitness activity. Because disc golf is so easy to learn, no one is excluded; players merely match their pace to their capabilities and proceed from there. One of the great features disc golf shares with golf is that they are both played in beautiful settings. A nine-hole disc golf course can be established on as little as five acres of land, and a championship-caliber 18-hole course uses 30 to 40 acres. Disc golf courses can coexist with existing park facilities and activity areas, with the ideal location combining wooded and open terrains and a variety of topographical change. The need for more courses is constant as the sport continues to grow in popularity. The PDGA has created resources for the design and installation of new golf courses to ensure their success in the community. Disc golf provides upper and lower body conditioning, aerobic exercise, and mental stimulation. Concentration skills increase by mastering shots and negotiating obstacles, and players of limited fitness levels can start slowly and gradually increase their level of play. Scheduling is also flexible: A casual round takes one to two hours and may be played alone,

eliminating the difficulty of scheduling tee times. Perhaps the greatest attribute of the sport is the low barrier to entry. A professional quality disc costs roughly $15, and it only takes one for basic play. The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) is a membership-based organization boasting more than 120,000 lifetime members across 54 countries. The PDGA is also the governing body for the sport and sanctions competitive events for players of every skill level. There are more than 8,000 disc golf courses worldwide, with more being installed every day. For more information, visit www. pdga.com.
