Kennebunk Cares Closet Helping to Clothe People in Need KENNEBUNK The community closet concept and creation of the Kennebunk Cares Closet (KCC) grew from a message to a closed Facebook group. A member of the group, who was also a mental health care provider, was looking for a way to provide clothing for a child who had nothing. The response was immediate and so generous that the advocate had to say, “Please stop now, the child is all set.” So impressed with the results, several members of the group thought it would be great if they could channel the generosity of the group to help more people
in need. Three months later, Kennebunk Cares Closet took its first “order.” KCC accepts donations of clean, quality, new or gently used clothing, outerwear and footwear in all sizes from newborn to adult. They partner with general assistance offices, school counselors, church liaisons and social service agencies who advocate for people in need. Volunteers pick up donations, sort and fold suitable items based on size, gender and fulfill requests honoring personal preferences of the recipient. The selected items are picked up by or
delivered to the advocate organization. Anonymity of those they help is the cornerstone of Kennebunk Cares Closet. They do not require proof of need because they recognize that sometimes a little help can go a long way for people struggling in today’s economy. KCC is always looking for volunteers to pick up donations, sort and fold clothing, fulfill orders and drop them off to advocate organizations. They are also always in need of bins to store off season clothing. The outpouring of support received shows that many members of the Ken-
nebunk community, and those beyond, agree with the mission and purpose of the grass roots effort that has become the KCC. 6th Annual Big Andrew “Car Classic”, a pre-1970s car show, taking place at the York Beach Ball Field, in York Beach on Saturday August 31. Having raised to date over $150,000 in its 12th year as an organization, The Big Andrew Foundation has set a fundraising goal of $30,000 through the weekend to benefit local cancer patients and families to meet the costs of living during treatment. The Big Andrew Foundation was established in 2008
following the passing of friend, brother, and son, 15-year-old Andrew Gmelch, who succumbed to a year and a half battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in December of 2007.
The mission of The Big Andrew Foundation is to support cancer patients and families of patients, by helping them meet the cost of living following a diagnosis. As a disease that affects
so many and that can have a devastating impact upon a community, the foundation has built strategic relationships See SURF page 7...

The group will conduct a #Trashtag Challenge to pick up trash in five different public parks and spaces throughout Boston. The service scholarship program was introduced in 2010 by then-Governor John Lynch, Red Sox Principal Owner John W. Henry, and Red Sox Foundation Board Member Linda Pizzuti Henry. Today, the New England Red Sox Service Scholarships Program has grown to include more than 200 high schools throughout New England.
