Eliot Celebrates Maine’s Bicentennial “200-Plus-One” ELIOT Eliot’s celebration of Maine’s Bicentennial (2020) began in September 2019 and was to have wrapped up in September 2020. Because of the pandemic, things were put on hold, but they have now resumed, with Eliot’s Maine Bicentennial Committee reinventing some events. Everyone is welcome to join in celebrating Maine’s Bicentennial “200-Plus-One.” The committee has a number of offerings, as well as free events planned, hosted by various groups. The committee is encouraging the community to decorate in red, white and blue for August through September. Saturday. August 14: As part of Eliot’s celebration of Maine’s “200-Plus-One” Bicentennial from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
A mural by Gordon Carlisle of the clippership “Nightingale” which was built at Eliot’s Hanscom Shipyard was installed in 2020 at Eliot Elementary School in honor of the Bicentennial.
there will be a tour at the Eliot Elementary School, 1298 State Road. On display will children’s artwork prepared as part of their Eliot History Studies programs, a mural of the Nightingale by
local artist Gordon Carlisle, the newly installed dedicatory plaque for the Robert Perham Gymnasium and the contributions that have been received for Eliot’s Time Capsule.
From 3-6 p.m. an Old Home Picnic will be held at the Eliot Elementary School upper playground. This community picnic, reminiscent of our early 20th century town celebrations, will include exhibits, games, activities for children, door prizes, and music. There will be a display honoring our Fabyan Drake Good Citizenship Award recipients and children’s artwork, Eliot Festival Day T-shirts will be on sale, we will be taking pre-orders for the town flag and accepting contributions, of laundry detergent, for Footprints Food Pantry of Kittery. supplies last). All free! Traffic-Calming, Crosswalk Enhancements in Ogunquit OGUNQUIT Route 1 in Ogunquit will soon feature new traffic-calming infrastructure and enhanced crosswalks as part of an Imagine People Here project. “Crossing Route 1 can be dangerous for pedestrians,” said Bicycle Coalition of Maine (BCM) Assistant Director Jim Tasse. “By slowing down traffic and making crossings more visible, we hope more motorists will yield to vulnerable users.” The installation will include the addition of curb extensions and delineators as part “gate-

way treatments” at two locations where Route 1 intersects with Glen Avenue and School Street. The School Street crossing has been repeatedly cited by residents as being particularly dangerous to pedestrians, the BCM says. Removing the intersection’s slip lane will not only cause drivers to slow down and make a more deliberate right turn, but it will significantly reduce the length of the crosswalk. Like all Imagine People Here demonstrations, the installation is inexpensive and temporary, and will be removed upon the arrival of winter weather. If future speed studies prove the installation to be successful, the organization hopes Ogunquit will make the changes permanent next year. The Coalition’s Imagine People Here program has been working to improve safety and access for pedestrians and people on bikes across Maine since 2015. ~ News ~ ...ELIOT from page 1 was a noted teacher, genealogist, state representative town clerk, and the first postmaster of Eliot. He was a member of the only library in the area – the Eliot Social Library – which was held at his home. Their son, Dr. John S. H. Fogg (1826-1893), donated the funds and lands for the building of a free public library, next door to the homestead, for the people of Eliot which was named for his father and opened in 1907. The #8 Schoolhouse Museum at 67 Greenwood Street, features memorabilia from Eliot’s one-room schoolhouses (1810-1940) and other Eliot history items from the Eliot Historical Society’s collection. A docent will be on hand to talk about and demonstrate what a day in the life of students would have been like. Eliothistoricalsociety.org The American Legion Post # 188, at 2 Cross Street will fea-

In 1961 the town’s fire station was moved to its present location and the building was then deeded to the American Legion Post in 1965. The Legion Post was chartered in 1950. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Actors and Audience Members Welcome Return to Hackmatack BERWICK For the actors on Hackmatack’s stage, for audience members filling the seats, for the man who has run this theater in a barn for decades, last weekend’s opening night was a celebration of coming together and rebirth. “It’s my first show back on stage so it’s been really special,” said Jacob Zentis of Nashua, one of the seven cast members who is presenting “The Spitfire Grill” at the Berwick theater this month. “This show was my re-emergence and my coming back to my roots, where I started in theater.” And when the curtain rose on “The Spitfire Grill” at 8 p.m. Friday, season pass-holder Gae Underhill of Farmington, NH, was thrilled to be back in Berwick with her three theater-going friends. “I love the live theater and musicals and I missed it so much,” said Underhill, who has been going to Hackmatack each summer for two decades. “I kept haunting the Hackmatack website wondering when are we going to get theater back.” In some ways the entire room was surprised to find themselves there, back in a theater and back to live theater after a year and a half of relative isolation. But within minutes, performers and ticket-holders alike were swept up in the world of musical theater. For the moment they forgot it had been two years since the curtain went up at Hackmatack. “What was so special is everyone had the same it’s-good-

to-be-back feeling. People were really happy to be back,” according to Zentis. “It started as a little nervous energy but once story started a sense of ease washed over them and us and they were swept up into the story.” The barn has a back wall that completely opens, and the concession stand and waiting areas are all outside. Fans blow softly throughout the barn and masks are available for anyone who forgot one. Furthermore, everyone in the cast and crew had been fully vaccinated to ensure the safety and comfort of those involved in the production. The show itself complemented the moment, with its story of a community coming back to life, Zentis said. “This story really parallels what is going on with all of us wanting hope for the future.”
A 2001 Off-Broadway musical, “The Spitfire Grill” was based on a 1996 film. It tells the story of an elderly woman who owns a diner she wants to sell. A newly released prisoner convinces her to raffle off the diner instead of selling it. Chuck Bouchard of Haverhill, Mass., who drove 75 minutes from Haverhill to see the show, said “I couldn’t miss an opportunity to go out and see live theater.” Besides, Bouchard had acted on the stage at Hackmatack 30 years ago and is enthusiastic about anything directed by his former UNH classmate Danielle Howard, who directed “The Spitfire Grill.” “The Spitfire Grill” is

Rizing Tide to Perform at Short Sands Beach
YORK The 2021 Ellis Park Summer Concert Series rolls on with the return of Rizing Tide on Friday, August 20 at 6:30 p.m. The four-member cover band has a long and successful history of entertaining audiences all along the seacoast from Yarmouth to Hampton Beach, NH. “Each of us brings so much experience and song knowledge
to the table having played in so many musical projects over the years, we can just have fun and play off each other.” said, Paul Collin, bass player for the band. “We mix things up and keep things fluid and that keeps it interesting for us and the audience. We may play a Beatles tune followed by Johnny Cash followed by a Motown song-we never play the same set list twice.”
wellsreserve at laudholm A PLACE TO DISCOVER
John (JT) Stivers, one of the guitarists/singers in Rizing Tide, was active in the New York City area as a performing musician and studio player, featured on records by Rahmlee Michael Davis (Earth, Wind, and Fire, Phenix Horns) and seminal rap artist Curtis Blow (featuring Bob Dylan and George Clinton from P-Funk). Since moving to Maine, Stivers has played in bands such as the Funk Junkies, Under the Covers, and his current band, The Bridgewalkers. Stivers has also produced two records of original songs, the latest of which, Til the Ship Goes Down, was released this year. Drummer Mike Lotfey is a Portland, Maine native who has been playing drums semiprofessionally for over 40 years. Consistently demonstrating an amazing sense of timing and understanding of song structures,
he’s able to provide solid, seamless and articulated rhythms that keep crowds dancing. Mike’s “deep pipes” also add dynamic vocal range to the band’s expansive song list. Mike has played all over Maine in bands including Strangebrew, Chance of Rain, and Off the Wall. In addition to lead and back-up vocals, Dave Perron plays rhythm and lead guitar and has been playing in bands for decades all over Maine. In addition to Rizing Tide, Dave performs with the band, Under the Covers. Born and raised in Chicago, Paul Collin has been playing bass since the 1980s. Originally a guitar player, he’s taken on a variety of musical projects with local musicians and enjoys sitting in at open mic events. Paul’s

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ KAA All Member Show KITTERY The Kittery Art Association’s newest exhibit, “Framed in Black”, is an all-member show that has just one rule – frame it in black! The uniformity in framing gives a whole new look to the artists’ offerings – if there is a certain sameness in the boundaries, how much more do the images pop? But at the same time, how much variety will be displayed in the framing? Come to the airy two-floor gallery at 8 Coleman Avenue in Kittery Point and see for yourself! The Spotlight Wall artist for this show is Betsy Wish. Betsy is a multi-talented creator across a variety of media. For this exhib-
it, she features a series of portraits of local lobster fisherman, many of whom she has met while out in her kayak. The photos are compelling in their lack of background, which leaves us looking closely at the subject – the tools of the trade, the physicality of the work, the expressions in the eyes. Wish says, “My decision to make them the focus of the current exhibit is to remind us of the integral role these folks have played, and continue to play, in our community. I want to pay tribute to their work, which continues to face numerous challenges.” Admission to the show is free and all are welcome to an opening reception on Saturday, August 14, 4-6 p.m. For more information, go to www.kitteryartassociation.org, email info@ kitteryartassociation.org, or call 207-451-9384.

Community Solar has Residents Seeing Green YORK Consumer demand for residential solar remains stronger than ever. According to a recent report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the 2020 U.S. solar consumption increased 22% from 2019. But residential solar is not always an accessible or affordable option for everyone. As many as three-quarters of American households are unable to access rooftop solar — because they rent or live in an apartment building, the financial investment is too prohibited, or they simply do not want panels on their roof. Community solar was developed to expand equal access to local renewable energy and its benefits, regardless of financial means or property ownership. While community solar is new to Maine, it has been available in twenty states and Washington, DC since as early as 2010. Now with President Biden’s climate plan to make the electric sector 100% carbon-free by 2035, many local governments have created state incentive programs and legislation that offer a clean, renewable energy option to their constituents. In 2019, Maine was the 19th state to pass legislation to expand the development of instate community solar to more than 18,000 Mainers. What exactly is community solar? Often called shared solar, community solar is a local solar “garden” or “farm” where customers sign up for a share in the project, often through a com-
munity solar project developer or provider. Hundreds of customers can be served by an average farm. Once constructed, the panels generate electricity which is sent through the local utility company’s grid to power their home. Subscribers then receive credits that reduce their utility bills by as much as 15% a year. The Coalition for Community Solar Access (CCSA), an industry trade group, generally discourages membership and cancellation fees, as do many community solar companies such as Nautilus Solar Energy. Nautilus Solar, an owner and operator of community solar projects with offices in York, has gone one step further to incentivize Mainers to go solar. The first subscribers to a community solar project in their utility area will receive a $100 gift card. “Our mission is to create a clean, sustainable future by offering an equitable and affordable renewable energy choice to all,” says Jim Rice, co-CEO of Nautilus. “Community solar is a win/win for residents. It allows subscribers to reduce their carbon footprint while saving money on their electric bills. Plus, their actions have an impact on the entire community by contributing to increased sustainability, cleaner healthier air, and reduced pollutants.” One Maine town is making a community-wide effort to reduce its emissions and increase sustainability. The York’s Select Board voted to adopt the goal of
50% reduction in York’s greenhouse gas emission by 2030, joining over 10,000 towns and cities worldwide that have made this commitment. As a result, local residents formed the www.yorkecohomes.com program which provides residents with one recommended, easy-to-accomplish, eco-friendly action each month. It is about residents helping York accomplish the 2030 emissions reduction goal. “We picked signing up for Community Solar as the first York EcoHOMES action because it is one of the easiest and most significant things a resident can do to reduce their home’s greenhouse gas emissions,” said Fred Weston, member of York EcoHOMES. “It only takes about 10 minutes to sign up, there’s no investment cost, your cost per kilowatt hour of electricity will go down, and it can reduce your emissions up to 20%. It’s a small step that has a big impact.” It is important to note that community solar program benefits and the terms and condition agreements can vary from program to program. Just like shopping for cell phone plans or cable packages, you should read through all program documents before signing up for a community solar program. Subscriptions to Nautilus Solar community solar projects are free and can be cancelled at any time. But there is a limit to the total number spots available. To learn more, go to www.nautilussolar.com.

Friends of Hope Cemetery & Woods Make Improvements to Trails KENNEBUNK In cooperation with the Town of Kennebunk, Friends of Hope Cemetery & Woods volunteers have made significant improvements to the Red Trail at Wiggins Pond. Decayed boardwalk intended to avoid muddy wet areas was removed and replaced with 90 feet of boardwalk and a 10-foot bridge over Scotchman’s Brook. These improvements provide a firm stable surface for walkers, allow small amphibians unobstructed access to water, encourage natural revegetation, and
reduce silts from the trail entering Scotchman’s Brook. Visitors will be pleased to see this area is safe and enjoyable for walking once again. For more information, contact Patsy Hemeon, Secretary Friends of Hope Cemetery & Woods at 978-764-6668 or email friendsofhcw@gmail.com.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I discovered too late my laptop, HP Pavilion, was not charging the battery. Now it won’t turn on and stay on. Lights indicate on but then immediately go out. Where do I go from here as the battery is only a little over six months old. I usually use it plugged in rather than battery power. Thanks, Ellyn Dear Ellyn, A fairly common problem with laptops is that the connection where you plug in the power cord becomes damaged, but before we jump to conclusions lets look and make sure there isn’t something simple going on. First, check the power to the laptop. Make sure it is plugged into a working outlet, check the cords for wear or damage, and try a different outlet. Next, take the battery out of your laptop, plug in the cord and see if the computer will start without the battery. Most laptops will run fine with the battery removed as long as you have it plugged in. If the laptop still won’t start up, there is probably damage at the connection. If your computer is still under warranty, contact the company, if not, you will need to find a computer shop that does that kind of repair. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady,
How do I create a sub-directory (I think that is what it is called) in MS Word? I have lots of recipes that I want to move to a sub-directory so I can get to them more quickly. Thank you! La Juanna Dear La Juanna, There are a couple of ways you can create folders to organize your Word files. First, you can go to the place you are saving your Word documents using File Explorer, and make new folders. Just open File Explorer and follow these directions: To create a folder: 1. Open the location you want to create the folder in; 2. Click the Home tab in the ribbon; 3. Click the “New Folder” button; 4. Type the name of your folder; 5. Press the enter key on your keyboard; 6. Rightclick in the content pane; 7. Point to “New”; 8. Click on “Folder”; 9. Type the name of your folder; 10. Press Enter. You can also create a folder when you are in the process of saving a Word Document. When you get to the part of the process where you select the location you want to save your document in, you can follow the second set of directions above to create a new folder. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have loved your newslet-
ter for many years and found it so helpful, though am no way a senior citizen techie! Recently you gave advice as to how to convert a DOCX document to a PDF format. Is the reverse possible so that I can edit a PDF document with the revisions wanted before the final “save”? (I did try to download a freebie program to do such, but got into trouble which necessitated professional repair!) I use Windows 7 and have Word 2007 installed. Also, I wonder if free upgrades are available for my Word 2007 edition and if they are safe from a Microsoft site? Or do I need to buy the latest Word edition to accomplish my mission? Thank you very much for your attention and I so appreciate any help that you can offer. Blessings and peace, Shirl Dear Shirl, Editing a PDF document is not always possible, it depends on how the document was created in the first place, and what you have for software on your computer. If the PDF document was created by scanning the original document, then it is most likely an image and not able to be edited no matter what type of program you have on your computer. If the PDF document was created in a word processing
program like Word, then you can edit it if you have the right program. Since PDF documents are actually adobe documents, you can edit them with Adobe Acrobat. Adobe Acrobat is not free, but since it is sold as a subscription, if you only have one or two documents that you need to edit, you should be able to purchase a one month subscription ($22 at acrobat.adobe.com) and get the work done. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have been getting your email for years and enjoy all your knowledge. Thank you. My question: I use Aol for my email. I have noticed for about the past month on all emails I sent, my email address is preceded with FedEx. I do not know how this happened, but I cannot figure out how to change. I did go to mail settings, but it only has my email address. Something seems
a little odd. Thanks, Barbara
Hi Barbara, I will have to say, that I almost deleted your email thinking it was a scam because it said, “FedEx” in the title. The setting to change the “From” name should be in the same settings where the email address is. Since you did not change this setting, and you don’t see it listed in the settings, I wonder if someone is using your AOL to send phishing messages. I would change the password for your AOL email, and then make sure your computer is not infected with any malware or viruses. Elizabeth Advertise in

WELLS You simply have to call it divine intervention that Safe Haven was contacted about nine (!) kittens in extreme need of rescue. Even before they arrived, one kitten died from illness, so all eight surviving kittens were brought to our Farmhouse adoption center. Three of the kittens ended up in emergency care within days. Max was the biggest worry, fighting both respiratory and eye infections. The infection had spread so deeply, doctors feared that both of Max’s eyes might need to be removed. An agonizing decision was made to remove Max’s right eye, and our dedicated Farmhouse team maintained a tight and diligent medication and observation schedule to save the other. Thankfully, all our TLC paid off! Max’s left eye has improved and will not have to be removed. Max has easily adapted to being a one-eyed kitty. Thanks to all the
love and attention he’s received since the moment he landed in Safe Haven’s arms, he is confident, affectionate, playful, and simply amazing to all the volunteers at our Farmhouse adoption center. Now 13 weeks old, Max is ready for adoption into the loving home he deserves! Max will benefit from a family that adores kitties and wants to shower them with love. Playtime is important to this young, exuberant kitten. A person or family who will interact frequently with Max would be the best, because he’s a very smart kitty who likes to learn. And when he needs a nap, his favorite place will be snuggling with you, giving you kisses and purrs through this slumber. We recommend a home with structure, no other animals and no young children. Max has gotten used to living apart from other kitties during his recovery time. However, the right kitty or dog
might actually be the frosting on the cake of life for Max. His confident, happy personality will probably allow for more interaction. Our adoption counselor team will help you see if Max is a good match for your situation. Please call Nancy at 207-849-0728. Extreme cases like Max test Safe Haven’s commitment as a nokill rescue and shelter. Many shelters would never have invested so much money and time in a kitty so physically damaged. But Safe Haven has never wavered from seeing every rescue all the way through, providing the best medical care and the most

How is GERD evaluated? What is a hiatal hernia and how does

Vape-Free Schools Scholarship Fund AUGUSTA Currently, nearly 1 in 5 teens are vaping and close to 1 in 4 teens are using at least one tobacco product – becoming the next generation addicted to tobacco. The American Lung Association announced the Vape-Free Schools Scholarship Fund, a new effort to fund schools’ implementation of the Vape-Free Schools Initiative so that more kids can access cessation, support and education. The scholarship drive seeks to raise funds to give schools across the country access to the program. With a cost of $400 per training seat, the goal is to raise $400,000 to serve 1,000 schools in need by the end of 2021. Through this scholarship drive, the Lung Association will enable faculty and students in Maine to access the Lung Association’s proven vaping intervention and cessation programs. “With 33% of Maine high school students using tobacco products, our communities need help in supporting students impacted by tobacco use. As the nation’s trusted champion of lung health, the American Lung Association is proud to off offer Maine schools, parents and students proven approaches to end youth vaping in our communities and help local students quit their addiction and prevent future generations from getting hooked,” said American Lung Association Chief Mission Officer Deborah Brown. The Vape-Free Schools Initiative provides school administrators and educators with training to offer an alternative-to-suspension program for students found vaping, smoking or chewing on school property, and a voluntary vaping/tobacco cessation program for youth wanting to quit for good. Alternative to Suspension (INDEPTH®) - an alternative for students who face suspension for violating school vaping and tobacco use policies. As teens continue to get hooked on vaping, this is a supportive program that teaches students about nicotine dependence and establishing healthy boundaries, rather than focusing solely on punitive measures. Vaping Education & Tobacco Cessation Program (NotOn-Tobacco® N-O-T - is a teen smoking/vaping cessation program for students that want to quit. The 10-session program
provides the tools, information, and support for teens to end their addiction to tobacco. Participating schools will be recognized as part of the American Lung Association Vape-Free Schools Initiative in their communities. To make a donation, visit www.lung.org/scholarship. To get more information about the Vape-Free Schools Initiative or submit your school for scholarship consideration, visit Lung.org/vape-free-schools or contact vapefree@lung.org. AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills announced that 80 percent of adults in Maine have received at least one dose of a COVID19 vaccine, achieving another milestone for the state as it continues to confront an increase in cases associated with the Delta variant. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S. CDC), 80.2 percent of adults (18+) in Maine have received a COVID-19 vaccination, one of six states in the nation to reach the milestone. Maine is the third best state in the nation in the percentage of residents who are fully vaccinated, with more than 64 percent of all residents – including children under 12 who are not yet eligible for a vaccine – fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Maine also continues to
make progress in vaccinating younger people, with more than 50 percent of youth ages 12 to 19 being fully vaccinated. “I applaud Maine people for their willingness to roll up their sleeves and get their shot,” said Governor Mills. “We know that vaccinations are the best tool to protect the health of Maine people, and with the more contagious and deadly Delta variant spreading across Maine and the nation, it is crucial that we continue to make progress and fight back against this pandemic. If you haven’t had your shot yet, I encourage you to talk to your doctor about how getting vaccinated can protect your health and potentially save your life.” COVID-19 vaccination rates are up 11.7 percent in Maine since late July. On July
30, Maine was administering 1,497 doses per day on a 7-day average basis. As of Sunday, August 8, that rate had risen to 1,673 doses per day. The U.S. CDC percentage takes into account the number of people age 12 to 17 who have received at least one dose of the Pfizer vaccine, the number of people age 18 and older who have received at least one dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, and the number of people age 18 and older who have received the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The COVID-19 vaccine is available at no charge at sites across the state. For information on getting a COVID-19 vaccine, visit www.maine. gov/covid19/vaccines or call the Community Vaccination Line at 1-888-445-4111.

Joseph Acquaviva, 79 WELLS – Joseph Acquaviva of Wells passed away July 31, 2021 following a lengthy illness. Joe was born in Butler, PA, on September 27, 1941, son of the late Joseph Acquaviva and surviving mother, Mary Acquaviva.
Memorial Service
Joe graduated from Butler High School and went on to earn an Associate Degree at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. His artistic ability provided him with the opportunity to work for the New York Times as a layout artist before moving on to Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in Connecticut. Joe moved to Maine to become co-owner of the Black Swan Tavern in Ogunquit. More recently, he remained active working at the Lafayette’s Oceanfront Resort at Wells Beach where his involvement was more a labor of love than a job. Joe was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wells and a 30-year volunteer at the Ogunquit Playhouse, never missing a performance. He particularly cherished his time with family and friends. Joe was preceded in death by his husband Richard Belanger with whom he spent the greater part of his life. Joseph is survived by his son Dean Acquaviva with wife Danielle of Southington, CT; mother Mary Acquaviva of Butler, PA; brother Richard Acquaviva with wife Joyce of Cranberry, PA; granddaughter Gabby
of Southington, CT; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, August 24 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 236 Eldridge Road, Wells followed by refreshments. We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

George was a car fanatic, whether it be repairs, watching YouTube videos, going to car shows or drag races. He was most proud of his 1934 Chevy hot rod, which he had been restoring since 1997. Prior to his original cancer diagnosis, he enjoyed nature and liked to go hiking, completing many 4,000 footers in the White Mountains. George’s home on the river allowed him to watch the change of seasons and the different wildlife from his living room windows. There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

~ Obituaries ~ ...HUNT from page 22 She married Ralph M. Hunt II August 19, 1979, and they have celebrated 41 years of love, compassion and devotion. She had a passion for step aerobics for years. She also had taken an interest in the art of printing, entering into an apprenticeship at Quality Press. There, she learned the skills of offset lithography, which she mastered and then became employed with Seacoast Press and most recently with the Kennebunk School System. Some of her duties included printing ballots for town votes, and printing documents for the KK&W Water District. Besides her family, cooking was one of her most heartfelt passions. Anyone who tried her cooking was always pleased. Dianne enjoyed riding her Harley-Davidson on sunny days. She loved nature, especially bird watching and tending her flower gardens, reading, and due to her printing work, whenever she came across a word (and this was seldom the case) she did not know, she would run to the dic-
tionary or thesaurus to look it up. Survivors include her mother Catherine Stokes Barron of Hot Springs, AR; husband Ralph M. Hunt II of Kennebunkport; two sons, Jacob Christian Hunt and his wife Natalie of Medford, MA, and James Stephen Hunt and his fiancé Heather Black of Arundel; brother Stephen Henry Christian and his wife Patricia of Lake Tahoe, NV; two nieces, Andrea Christian of Hawaii and Amelia Rudolph of Alabama; and let’s not forget her beautiful dog, Max. A celebration of Dianne’s life, that will be open to the public, is being planned and will be announced by Bibber Memorial Chapel. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Welfare Society, PO Box 94, West Kennebunk, ME 04054 in Dianne’s memory. Jane Marie McCarthy, 75 KITTERY – Jane Marie McCarthy died on July 5, 2021. She was 75 years old and had suffered considerably for almost four years due to cancer and other health problems. Jane was born at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton, MA, on January 27, 1946, the only child of Jim and Mary Quigley; and she grew up in Newton, MA, surrounded by loving Irish relations, from whom she heard many stories of Eire and learned many Irish songs and poems. She later introduced many of her friends to the beauties and wonders of Ireland, acting as tour guide to her friends and sharing her Irish cousins with them.
After graduating from Rosary Academy in Watertown, MA, in 1963, Jane went to Fitchburg State College, graduating in 1967. She moved to York that year to begin her teaching career at Mitchell School in Kittery Point, and she lived in Maine for the rest the of her life. Jane had a lasting influence as both teacher and mentor to her students. Despite needing to retire in 1990 due to health problems, she remained in close contact with many of them to the end of her days. They and their parents helped her in a multitude of ways as her health worsened, and she was extremely grateful. Jane loved animals and had many dogs and cats throughout her life, and she realized her childhood dream of owning a horse when she bought and rode “The Moose.” She especially loved the Irish donkeys, contributing to the donkey sanctuary there. She married Kevin McCarthy in 1971 and, sadly, was divorced several years later. She subsequently devoted more time to her students and, being childless, to her friends’ children. She was beloved “Auntie Jane” to many children, and she loved
them and took as much pleasure in their antics and accomplishments as if they were her own. Jane was intelligent, wellread (the possessor of thousands of books!), generous, humorous, a music-lover, a great story-teller, and a great and faithful friend. In her thirty years of retirement, she was always ready to put the kettle on (or pour a drop of Irish whiskey) and listen to her friends and give wise advice when needed. Apart from her many close friends and cousins here, her greatest joy was being able to go to Ireland, and to go to Irish music concerts here when she was not able to go there. Her remains will go to her beloved Ireland as soon as possible, and there will be a gathering later to eat, drink (thus “improving the day”), and share Jane stories. She is survived by her Cunningham, Smith, and Quigley cousins here and the O’Regans in Ireland. A time of remembering Jane will take place at the tower pavilion at Fort Foster on Sunday, August 22, at 3 p.m. Care for the McCarthy family has been entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey & Son Funeral Home.
FINANCE & CAREER $1.5B for Maine Governments
WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME) announced that Maine will receive nearly $1.5 billion in aid to state, county, and local governments through the American Rescue Plan. The funding includes more than $997 million to the State of Maine, more than $221 million to support Maine’s county governments, and a combined total of nearly $241 million for local governments. From the onset of the pandemic, Senator King has strongly called attention to the financial crunch being felt by states and localities, highlighting his concerns in a speech on the Senate floor and joining a bipartisan push for significant, flexible funding to these entities. Senator King voted for the American Rescue Plan’s passage on March 6. The funding will allow local governments to address shortfalls due to the coronavirus pandemic, and address challenges resulting from the crisis. Senator King specifically pushed for several uses that have since been deemed eligible, including allowing state and local governments to use funds to support treatment for mental health and substance use disorders, which have skyrocketed during the pandemic.
The State of Maine will also be able to cover the cost of tax relief extended to businesses that accessed the Paycheck Protection Program. Additionally, the federal guidance supports Senator King’s call that broadband investments funded through the American Rescue Plan should aim for a modern broadband speed of 100 megabits per second for both uploads and downloads; Senator King was instrumental in the inclusion of funding for broadband in the package, which is expected to bring more than $120 million in broadband investments to Maine. The funding to be awarded includes York County to receive $40,331,830.
$40K in Scholarships Awarded to Local Students
STATEWIDE Twenty-four hardworking and kind student-members have officially been selected as recipients of Northeast Credit Union’s 2021 Scholarship Awards. Within the scholarship program, $40,000 was awarded to student-members in New Hampshire and Maine who displayed exceptional leadership, compassion, and commitment to academics as well as their communities. “Our student-members, both graduating high school this year or taking initiative to further their education later in life, have overcome great obstacles in the past year and a half. Under these circumstanc-
es, they continued to adapt to new ways of learning, growing, and supporting their peers,” says Northeast Credit Union President and CEO Timothy J. Collia. “We are so proud of each student who applied for a Northeast Credit Unions scholarship this year, as they made it incredibly difficult for our Scholarship Committee to make their final selection of the recipients. We are excited to continue to see and share in the success of these bright students throughout all of
life’s milestones.” This year, the program awarded students from 19 different schools. Local students included: Community Champion Scholarship for Owen Chestnut of Kennebunk High School; Love Your Community Scholarship for Aiden Drake of Wells High School, Rebekah Brooks of Noble High School, Ryan Gurrisi of Berwick Academy, and Maddie Fjeld of Marshwood High School.

Stamp Honors Yankees Legend Yogi Berra NATIONWIDE The U.S. Postal Service recently issued the Yogi Berra stamp which was dedicated during a ceremony at the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center in Little Falls, NJ, and is now being sold at post offices nationwide and online at www.usps.com/yogiberrastamp. “We hope this stamp will serve as a reminder of Yogi’s larger than life personality — both on and off the field,” said Ron A. Bloom, chairman, U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors. Bloom was joined for the ceremony by Bob Costas, Emmy
Award-winning sportscaster, and Larry, Tim and Dale Berra, sons of Yogi Berra. “The Berra family wishes to thank the U.S. Postal Service for honoring our father with a Forever stamp for his prowess as a baseball icon who demonstrated the right way to earn the respect of family, friends, competitors and people everywhere,” the family said in a statement. Yogi Berra was one of the greatest Major League Baseball players of all-time. He won three American League MVP awards, was an 18-time MLB All-Star and

DUBOIS LIVESTOCK, INC.
to a minor league contract in 1942. After playing one season, he was drafted and served in the Navy during World War II serving as part of the D-Day invasion and eventually earning a Purple Heart. Discharged in May of 1946, Berra played with the Yankees for the final week of the season. He hit the first of his 358 Major League home runs in his second time at bat. The next season, he won the first of his World Series rings. A talented athlete, Berra became almost as well known for his paradoxical sayings, Yogi-isms — contradictory bits of logic and humor — as for his skill on the baseball diamond. “I never said everything I said,” Berra conceded, but several quotes attributed to him appear in Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations. After retiring as a Yankees player in 1963, Berra began a second career as a manager and coach, taking two teams to the World Series as manager. Berra was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972 and was a posthumous recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award.
