The Perseids – The Best Meteor Shower of the Year! STATEWIDE The year’s best meteor shower, Perseids, is fast approaching, promising to bring spectacular shooting stars to the summer sky. What are the Perseids? The Perseids are active every year from around July 14 to August 24, according to NASA. The meteor shower peaks in midAugust, peaking this year on August 11, 12 and 13. Under ideal conditions,
skywatchers can expect to see up to 100 meteors per hour – a much higher amount than most other showers. NASA considers it the best shower of the year, and it’s always a crowd-pleaser. The meteors are very fast and bright, regularly leaving long tails of light and color behind them as they streak across the sky at around 37 miles per second. They are also known for their fireballs, big explosions of bright light and color
that last longer than an average meteor streak. Perseid meteors, which are leftover comet particles and bits from broken asteroids, appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus – earning the shower its name. The constellation is not the actual source of the meteors, so viewers do not need to determine its exact location to spot shooting stars. See METEORS page 9...
Canada Eases Border Measures for Fully-Vaccinated Travelers NATIONWIDE T he G ove r n me nt of Canada has prioritized health and safety by taking a risk-based and measured approach to reopening their borders. Rising vaccination rates and declining COVID-19 cases, has allowed the government to move forward with adjusted border measures. On September 7, provided that the domestic epidemiologic situation remains favorable, Canada intends to open borders to any fully-vaccinated travelers who have completed the full course of vaccination at least 14 days prior to entering the country and who meet spe-

cific entry requirements. As a first step, starting August 9, Canada plans to allow entry to American citizens and permanent residents who are currently residing in the U.S. for non-essential travel. This preliminary step allows for the government to fully operationalize the adjusted border measures ahead of September 7, and recognizes the many close ties between Canadians and Americans. Travelers must use ArriveCAN (app or web portal) to submit their travel information prior to arrival. If they are eligible to enter Canada and

Don’t know what black swallowwort looks like? Don’t worry. You will be assigned to work with a team, and an experienced team leader will show you how to identify swallowwort that lurks throughout other vegetation. It is simple to harvest the vines and pods and makes a huge difference in stopping the spread of this insidious vine. Wind disperses the seeds, so it is critical to collect the seed pods before they open in early September. Swallowwort (Dog-strangling vine) is one of the toughest invasive plants to control, much less eradicate. It is a native to Europe and was brought in as an ornamental plant in 1854, first recorded in an Ipswich, Mass. botanical garden. Within ten years it was spreading into natural areas. Swallowworts

first colonized New England, but are now in twenty-one states, as well as Ontario and Quebec in Canada. Black swallowwort threatens not only the natural habitat but also our beloved Monarch butterfly. Since it is in the Milkweed family, Monarchs mistake the invasive plant for our native milkweed. When the Monarch lays its eggs on swallowwort, the larvae do not survive because they have not evolved to ingest the toxins in the swallowwort leaves. The efforts of Pod Day volunteers make a real impact. After adding up the number of pounds of pods collected over the past eight Pod Days (6520 lbs.), counting the average number of pods per pound (78), and the average number of seeds per pound (1500), close to TEN MILLION seeds have been removed from the Marginal Way! ~ News ~ Bicentennial Time Capsule, Seeking Items and Keepers STATEWIDE The State of Maine Bicentennial Time Capsule is one of the Maine Bicentennial Commission’s signature programs. The Dirigo Star, created by the Composites Laboratory at the University of Maine, will be placed on a Maine granite base with a Dirigo banner unfurled in front, all atop a Maine Heritage Timber custom-made cabinet. It will include items of interest related to Maine’s 200 years of statehood, to be formally sealed in December of 2021 and installed at the Maine State Library. The University of Maine’s Advanced Structures & Composites Center in Orono presented the 3D-printed Dirigo Star to the commission during a ceremony on March 15, Maine’s Birthday. “The North Star that this capsule is modeled after

...CAPSULE from page 3 innovation that has been produced by our flagship university since 1865 and increasingly is elevating Maine in our nation and around the globe,” said center president Joan Ferrini-Mundy, who is also the university’s vice chancellor for research and innovation. “We are honored to present this gift made by our faculty, staff and students to the people of Maine, and proud that it will be on public display in Augusta for the coming century

Additional items commemorating 2020 will be chosen for inclusion in one of the four cabinet drawers as well. The drawers allow items to be added during the state’s milestone anniversaries in 2045, 2070, and 2095 – with a grand unsealing envi-
sioned in 2120. The commission is encouraging the public to nominate one or more items for inclusion that may no longer be part of Maine life in 2120. The items suggested must: Be no larger than a paperback novel; Be readily available at little to no cost to the commission; Not include any liquids, flammable or caustic materials, or perishable items. Suggestions must be submitted no later than Friday, August 13, at 5 p.m. via email at info@maine200.org or webform at www.maine200.org/ programs/time-capsule.

After compiling nominations, the Commission will present multiple items for Mainers to vote on in the fall of 2021 and those will become our “People’s Choice” items for inclusion in the time capsule. As you consider your proposal, please note that items already selected include letters from state and federal officials; an item from Etna and Kennebunk (municipalities that also marked their bicentennials in 2020); an item from the State of Missouri, which entered the Union with Maine as a result of the Missouri Compromise; COVID-19 related items; and a few select Maine200 bicentennial commemoration items such as the bicentennial coin, flag, and pins. ~ News ~ Local Eagle Scout Creates Repository for “Old Glory” NORTH BERWICK One of North Berwick’s upand-coming citizens is Topher Leon, a member of Noble High School’s Class of 2021 who graduated with honors and is headed to the University of Maine in Orono starting this fall. Among his many achievements, one project stands out for this stellar student and athlete, who is a member of Berwick Scout Troop 313 and has been active in scouting since first grade: his Eagle Scout project. Initiated in 2020, Topher’s project involved soliciting and scheduling helpers, and designing, building, and installing several containers for community use in properly disposing American flags that are no longer serviceable. Topher created and distributed four bright blue flag disposal boxes to provide a convenient way for local residents to dispose of their old
flags in a proper and respectful manner. The flags are then collected by Berwick’s American Legion Post #79 for appropriate disposal, most notably at Flag Day Ceremonies held annually on June 14 at the Berwick town hall. The Post #79 members were thrilled to sponsor Topher’s project, which took six months to complete and made much more difficult due to state and local rules and restrictions imposed during the pandemic.

Now thanks to Topher’s project, flag boxes are now strategically located at the Berwick Town Hall, the Berwick Public Library, the Noble Middle School, and the Berwick United Methodist Church, where Boy and Cub Scout meetings are held. If local residents have a worn or torn American flag that should no longer be flown, look for the brilliant blue flag topped boxes to safely and respectfully lay “Old Glory” to rest. ...CANADA from page 1 Visitors should also plan to wear facial coverings and physically distance in indoor public spaces and some outdoor spaces as required in Canada. To further support these new measures, Transport Canada is expanding the scope of the existing Notice to Airmen that currently directs scheduled international commercial passenger flights into four Canadian airports to include five more. The airports, in cooperation with the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency, are implementing the measures necessary to safely welcome international passen-
gers as soon as possible. Traveling From Canada To The U.S. Canadians must wait until August 21 to enter the U.S. for nonessential travel. However, Americans coming home from travel across the border will be allowed since it is considered “essential” to return. Border measures remain subject to change as the epidemiological situation evolves. This article was based on one provided by the Public Health Agency of Canada. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ ...METEORS from page 1 The comet responsible for the Perseids is called 109P/ Swift-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1862 by Lewis Swift and Horace Tuttle. It orbits the sun once every 133 years, last passing through the inner solar system in 1992. The comet’s nucleus is 16 miles across, which is almost twice the size of the object that scientists believed wiped out the dinosaurs, NASA said. When and where to watch the Perseids? They occur during the warm nights of summer, making them easily visible from around the world, especially in the Northern Hemisphere. Meteors will be visible starting in the mid-to-late evening hours, as early as 9 p.m., and continue to get better into the pre-dawn hours, after 2 a.m. Earlier in the night, skywatchers have the opportunity to spot a rare earthgrazer, a long, slow and colorful meteor moving across the horizon. In the Southern Hemisphere, meteors will begin to appear around midnight. “If those hours seem daunting, not to worry! You can go out after dark, around 9 p.m. local time, and see a few Perseids,” NASA said. “Just know that you won’t see nearly as many as you would had you gone out during the early morning hours.” Weather permitting, NASA recommends finding a place with a clear view of a large swath
of the sky. On the peak mornings this year, moonlight won’t interfere with the show, with the moon only in its waxing crescent phase and 13% full, guaranteeing the sky remains dark enough to spot shooting stars. Lie flat on your back and look up, allowing your eyes several minutes to adjust before taking in as much of the sky as possible for at least an hour. You won’t need any special equipment or knowledge of the constellations to see the show. The shower’s peak isn’t your last chance to spot the meteors — they can still be clearly seen for about 10 days after. Additionally, the Southern Delta Aquariid and Alpha Capricornid meteor showers are still active through midAugust, adding to the dazzling light show. If you’re not in a position to watch the Perseids, there are live streams available. NASA typically live streams the event on its Meteor Watch Facebook page, as does the Virtual Telescope Project.

painting and teaching, Ric still thinks of himself as a student. “As a painter, I am always a student, eager to learn more about my craft so I can speak more eloquently in paint,” he says. Ric aims to bring his artistic interpretation to his paintings, rather than laboring for bare realism. Along with oil paintings of local scenes, portraits and a variety of other subjects, included in the show will be his 2020 donation to “Art by the Sea” to benefit the Ogunquit Museum of American Art. This large painting depicts the joy of children and the love of the ocean, one of his favorite subjects to paint as an Ogunquit resident and painter. This painting along with many other fine art donations by local artists can be viewed at www.omaaartbythesea.com. For more information on the artist, visit www.ricdellabernarda.com.

Daily Sweat Celebrates Second Year in Business KENNEBUNK The Daily Sweat brought the heat to Kennebunk. Owner Tiffany Lathrop opened a heated yoga and barre studio in the Shops at Long Bank, next to Saco Bay Physical Therapy in the Hannaford plaza. It remains the only heated yoga and barre facility between Portsmouth and Portland and they just celebrated two years. What the young entrepreneur didn’t see ahead of her was the resilience she’d face when the world shut down a mere nine months after opening a brand new business. She recalls March 16, 2020, “I was watching businesses I admired in the Northwest slowly close their doors, I was scared, I didn’t know if we would survive. What was the right thing for our community? We were so new.” She sent an email to her team late the night. “I had no idea what we were going to do, but I knew the time had come to close our doors too. I emailed my team and told them I’d have a plan in place before the woke up in the morning.” She spent that night researching how to livestream classes, what equipment they would need, what the best set up would be. “We were very lucky, we may have closed our doors, but we didn’t stop. We changed our course and headed in a new direction with still staying true to who we are. We were so fortunate to continue to provide an income for our team when many of them had lost their 9-5 job.” “Even better, was the clients, they joined online, wrote notes of encouragement, they showed up. Our team had to change how they taught and had to learn to not only teach virtually, but how to keep building our community virtually too. We all learned and worked together.” Like many businesses, The Daily Sweat lost a lot of what they had built, but they also saw resiliency in their community. Clients joined them outside rain, sun, snow. They enjoyed 1:1 classes, small group classes, masked classes – they persevered. “This weekend felt like a milestone.” Tiffany shared. “We weren’t celebrating two years in business, we were celebrating everything that we overcame, together.” The yoga and barre studio
is open daily, offering 34 classes per week – in-person, outdoor and virtually. Classes are all inclusive for one monthly fee. The Daily Sweat prides itself on being filled with passionate teachers fo-
cused on helping individuals of all ages and levels find health, wellness and community. For information, call 207569-0999 or email thedailysweatkennebunk@gmail.com.

OGUNQUIT Partners Bank is pleased to be a Director’s Circle sponsor of the Ogunquit Museum of American Art (OMAA) for the second year in a row. The Bank’s pledge of $10,000 funds the exhibition opening in July for Art’s Ball: Wood Gaylor & American Modernism. Established in 1953, the OMAA houses a permanent collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and photographs from the late 1800s to the present. It is the only museum in Maine devoted exclusively to the exhibition, preservation, and interpretation of American art. “We appreciate Partners Bank continued support of the Museum and the sponsorship of
the Art’s Ball show, says OMAA Executive Director Amanda Lahikainen. “It’s community partnerships like this that allow us to bring exhibitions by important modern and contemporary American artists to audiences in southern Maine and beyond.” “We are honored to support the museum’s mission of fostering cultural enrichment in our area. With its lengthy history of showcasing cultural gems in American art, the Ogunquit Museum of American Art provides an invaluable service to Maine communities” says Partners Bank President and CEO Blaine Boudreau. United Way Announces Merger YORK COUNTY United of Greater Portland and United Way of York County announced they will merge the two organizations to create United Way of Southern Maine. The merger, effective on July 1, follows extended discussions between the boards of Greater Portland and York County United Ways, which began late last year. “This decision allows United Way to maximize our stakeholder relationships and increase our operational efficiency, which we expect will result in more funds available for programs and initiatives that improve lives and strength-
en communities in Southern Maine,” said Liz Cotter Schlax President and CEO of United Way of Greater Portland. “This has been an incredibly thorough and thoughtful process, and we are excited to be moving forward.” As internal operations are integrated, local community priorities will continue to be at the center of the work. For example, funding decisions based on local priorities of education, financial stability, and health. People and Business Profiles York County Hazmat Tech Named Firefighter of the Year YORK COUNTY The York County Chiefs Association is proud to announce that a York County Hazmat Technician has been honored as the Maine American Legion’s Firefighter of the Year for his efforts during the pandemic. Christopher Allen, who also serves as a call firefighter with the Wells Fire Department, received the honor during ceremonies on June 12 at the Maine American Legion Annual Convention in Brewer. Allen was at the forefront of COVID-19 response from the initial days of the pandemic. He assisted organizations in developing respiratory protection programs to protect employees who cared for or worked with those infected with COVID-19, and to help those organizations prevent the spread of the disease. “He stepped up, countless times, weekends, after hours, holidays, to ensure all of our safety,” said Wells Fire Chief

Mark Dupuis. “I believe that his efforts slowed the spread of COVID19 and saved lives,” said Chief Roger Hooper, York County Fire Administrator. Allen developed a program to fit-test N95 respirators, assisted implementation of testing within York County, and trained members of the Maine National Guard how to fit-test. Through these efforts more than 2,000 health-care and public-safety
workers were fit-tested. Allen later provided training to York County organizations, so they could train their staffs and maintain proper protocols. “Even when our teams were not working in his county, he was always available for consultation and coordination,” said Maine National Guard Chief Warrant Officer Dave Cheney. He also led decontamination teams that responded to more than 100 public and private

Deputy Secretary of Defense Visits Portsmouth Naval Shipyard
KITTERY Deputy Secretary of Defense Dr. Kathleen Hicks visited Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNS) in July. Dr. Hicks was joined by Maine and New Hampshire Congressional Delegations. Alongside Shipyard Commander Captain Daniel Ettlich and Nuclear Engineering and Planning Manager Stephen Fahey, Dr. Hicks toured USS Texas (SSN 775) as it undergoes modernization, received a brief on innovation ongoing at the shipyard, and saw first-hand a number of the infrastructure projects currently underway at the shipyard. “These facility projects po-
sition the shipyard for success in our mission to provide submarine readiness,” said Ettlich. As the visit progressed, Ettlich elaborated on what these infrastructure projects will mean for the shipyard’s future. “By ensuring our workforce has the right facilities, equipment, and tools, we are able to deliver the best undersea warfare platform possible for our Sailors when called upon to conduct the nation’s business for today and years to come.” During her visit, Dr. Hicks witnessed progress of the Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program (SIOP), a multi-year, multi-billion dollar undertaking for refurbishing the nation’s four public shipyards
with modernized equipment, improved workflow, and upgraded dry docks and facilities. A key project at the shipyard is the consolidated Paint, Blast, and Rubber facility. This $80M project consolidates operations from nine aging facilities into one modern, centrally located building with optimized configuration and equipment to support increased productivity, quality, and safety. One of the most visible and impactful projects is the $158M Dry Dock #1 superflood basin, which enables submarines to be docked 365 days per year without buoyancy assistance. The superflood basin provides opportunities to reduce maintenance duration and cost,
increase scheduling flexibility, and reduces risk and improves safety by eliminating the strict dependencies on the Piscataqua River tidal fluctuations. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is America’s leader in attack submarine maintenance and modernization. The ontime completion of submarine availabilities is critical in the maintenance of today’s fleet and is essential to maintaining maritime superiority and expanding the undersea advantage. As a field activity of NAVSEA, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is committed to maximizing fleet readiness by safely delivering first-time quality, on time, and on budget.

Southern Maine AIDS Walk/5K Run OGUNQUIT The Frannie Peabody Center’s largest annual fundraiser, The Southern Maine AIDS Walk/5K Run, will take place on Saturday, August 14. Since 2009, the event has not only raised critical funding and awareness, but also brought people together in support of one another. Every year, over 300 participants have made their way to beautiful Ogunquit Beach for the culmination of their fundraising efforts. With over 40 community sponsors and more than 1,000 donors, the event raises more than $100,000 in support of
people in Maine living with and at risk for HIV/AIDS. Many people choose to walk in memory of a loved one they have lost to AIDS, in honor of a friend still fighting, or as a way to educate their children about an important issue that affects our community. Registration is $35 per person. For more information and to register online, go to https://peabodycenter.salsalabs.org/2021aidswalk/index. html. Those unable to attend the August 14 event can still participate by walking/running virtually anytime between August 14 at 9 a.m. and August 15 at 7 p.m.

AUGUSTA On July 15, a bill from Senator Donna Bailey, D-Saco, that protects domestic violence victims from housing and employment discrimination became law without the governor’s signature. LD 1294, “An Act To Prevent Discrimination against Domestic Violence Victims,” was introduced because domestic violence survivors are too often left more vulnerable if they lose their employment or housing when they seek protection from their abusers. “I am pleased that domestic violence survivors will now have additional legal protection,” said Sen. Bailey. “Domestic violence survivors who take the brave step of seeking an order of protection for themselves should not also have to face potential repercussions at work or where they live for seeking the assistance of the law.” LD 1294 amends the Maine Human Rights Act and provide protections against discrimination in employment and housing against a person who has sought and received
an order of protection. “Employment and housing discrimination complicate domestic violence survivors’ attempts to obtain or maintain financial independence, which is often critical to their ability to successfully separate from the person abusing them,” said

The U.S. CDC determines level of community transmission based on the number of cases in the last seven days per 100,000 people and the percentage of tests in the last seven days that have a positive result. Consistent with Maine’s recent approach to COVID19-related policy and the expiration of the State of Civil Emergency, these changes are recommendations, not requirements.

That process involves an advanced, minimally invasive hair transplant system that uses technology driven by artificial intelligence. “Among the reasons patients consider hair restoration is that they want to get back some of their youthful look and feel better about themselves,” Angelos says. “Helping them accomplish that is one of the great satisfactions I get from being a plastic surgeon.” But for those who want to keep their hair healthy and full now and who hope to avoid ever reaching the point where they need hair-loss intervention, Angelos offers a few tips: Maintain good hair care and hygiene habits. The way you wash your hair could undermine your efforts to prevent hair loss, Angelos says. As you wash, avoid pulling back on your hair because that can put traction on the follicles. “The same goes for combing,” he says. “It’s less stressful on the follicles to wash and comb your hair forward, toward your See HAIR page 25...

Maine workers. But it also included money to provide free school meals to every student. Maine is one of the first states in the country to take this step. According to some recent estimates up to about one in four children in Maine is considered food insecure. This new law will now provide 56 million meals for free for Maine kids.
This law will also help lift the burden of those meals for families who are accessing government services and pantry networks. If a family is receiving SNAP and is receiving school meals for free, it’s hoped that the family will not have to go to the pantry as often as they can rely on the school meals and help end hunger in Maine.

Dear Computer Lady, We have Verizon DSL, windows 10 and very slow speed. We were advised to remove “cookies “ to increase speed by making more room. Do you advise this? If so, how do we do this? Thank you, Pat Dear Pat, Cookies are very small files that are left on your computer after visiting a website. They store information about your visit to that site so that the next time you visit you don’t have to enter as much information. moving cookies to increase your internet speed is not really true. The only exception would be if your hard drive was so full that Windows didn’t have room to function well. In today’s world of huge hard drives and lots of storage space, I have yet to see a computer running Windows 10 with that type of problem. If your computer is slow because the hard drive is running out of room, removing cookies (which are very small files) would probably not make much of a difference, and you would need to remove them every time you used the internet. You can remove cookies in Windows 10 with the following directions: 1. Open your web browser (Since you are using Windows 10, I am going to assume you are using the Edge browser); 2. Click on the, “More” button in the upper-right corner of the window. It has a row of 3 dots on the icon; 3. Click on “Settings” in the drop down menu; 4. Find the setting that says, “Clear browsing data” and click the “Choose what to clear” button below; 5. Select the items you want to clear, then click the “Clear” button. If you want, you can turn on the option that says, “Always clear this when I close the browser”. That way, you don’t have to remember to go in and manually clear the cookies. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I need to move the programs and files from my old computer to my new computer. The old one is Windows 10 Home 64bit. The new one is Windows 10 Professional 64bit. I was wondering if you would know of a good migration program I could use to move all the info using a cable hookup like usb3 or maybe a cat6. I was thinking of using Z Install Winwin. Is this a reputable company? I’ve read some bad reviews and some very good ones. Thank you for all your time and help. Respectfully, Roger
Dear Roger, I have a great program you can use to move the data and settings from your old computer to the new one. It is called, Fab’s AutoBackup and you can find it at www.fpnet.fr. I use the professional version all the time in my business, but they also have an affordable home version. Fab’s will automatically backup and restore all your personal folders like documents and pictures, along with your browser settings, email data and settings, and a long list of other things that I don’t have space to list here. All you need is a USB drive or network attached storage to transfer. I have not heard of or used the software that you mentioned, but I have heard good things about EaseUS at www.easeus.com/pc-transfer-software/. I have not used it myself, as I prefer to install programs manually on a new computer. I hope this helps, Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I love your informative column. When I get an unknown email is it safe to click Unsubscribe? Thanks in advance, Lisa Dear Lisa, When you get an email that you did not sign up for, it is usually being sent by a spammer, and the only reason that a spammer would have an unsubscribe link in the email is to find out if there is a real person reading the emails. So, while clicking the unsubscribe link will probably not cause damage to your computer, it will almost guarantee that you will get more unwanted email messages from a multitude of spammers. The best thing to do is delete the email and move on. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I love your column. I love PC games and I use Big Fish games, which you have recommended. Are there any other PC game companies you recommend
Cyber Director “Historic Step” to Confront Cyber Challenges WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME), co-chair of the Cyberspace Solarium Commission (CSC), recently applauded the unanimous Senate confirmation of Chris Inglis to serve as the nation’s first-ever National Cyber Director. The newly-created position was a key recommendation of the CSC, and was one of their 25 recommendations included in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2021. Senator King introduced Inglis, who also served as a CSC Commissioner, during his nomination hearing before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. “Cyberattacks are becoming a weapon of choice for nationstates and criminals alike in the 21st century – and as an open, widely-connected society, the United States has asymmetrical vulnerabilities that it must work to address. In recent weeks, America has been hit by a number of disruptive cyberattacks, and the only thing more chilling than as safe? I went to one and they tried to add a new tool bar to my computer which I do not want. thanks in advance, Lisa Dear Lisa, It is really hard to find PC game companies that are free or affordable that don’t come with a lot of advertising junk! I still like Big Fish Games, which you can find at: www.bigfishgames. com/ and there is a small company called solsuite which has just about every kind of solitaire game you can imagine. www. solsuite.com/. I also have a lot of customers who use Pogo, but I am not a fan of their site, as it often has (or causes) a lot of problems. Elizabeth
the steady stream of attacks is the knowledge that in the wrong hands, the effects could be far more devastating,” said Senator King. “Today, the Senate took a historic step toward confronting this challenge by confirming Chris Inglis as the country’s first-ever National Cyber Director. Chris is an intelligent and talented leader, who possesses both the experience and the disposition to lead a government-wide effort to strengthen our cybersecurity.” As a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Senate Armed Services Committee, chair of the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, and co-chair of the CSC, Senator King is recognized as one of Congress’s leading experts on cyberdefense and a strong advocate for a forwardthinking cyberstrategy that emphasizes layered cyberdeterrence. His expertise and insights were seen most recently on CNN’s State of the Union. The CSC was established by statute in the 2019 NDAA, officially launched in April 2019, and will continue to execute its statutory mission through December 2021. The commission’s report and work seeks to strengthen America’s posture in cyberspace and identify opportunities to improve national preparedness to defend ourselves against cyberattacks.

Anthony “Tony” J. Cusimano, 89 SOUTHERN PINES, NC / WELLS – Anthony J. Cusimano of Southern Pines, NC, passed away peacefully at home after a brave battle with lymphoma on July 20, 2021. He was surrounded by the love of his wife and family. Beloved husband for 66 years of Phyllis (Caterino) Cusimano, he was born in Jamestown, NY, to the late Anna and Joseph Cusimano. In addition to his loving wife, Phyllis, he is survived by his three daughters of whom he was extremely proud: Carol Wilson and husband Roger of Pinebluff, NC, Sharon Coleman and husband Bill of Bonita, CA,
and Leanne Cusimano of Southern Pines, NC, formerly of York. He also leaves his sisters, Virginia Destro, Frances Bishop, and JoAnne Capizzi of Jamestown, NY, many cousins, and dozens of nieces and nephews who idolized him. Anthony grew up in Jamestown, NY, graduated from Jamestown High School in 1949, and studied Radio Broadcast Journalism at Jamestown Community College. He proudly served in the Navy from 1951 to 1955, during which time he met Phyllis, and their long-distance courtship led to marriage on July 9, 1955. His 18-year career as an on-air radio DJ, brought him much celebrity, joy, and excitement, meeting and introducing recording artists at live concert performances, and making personal appearances as “Tony Jay” or “The Jay-Bird”. He was known for his nightly sign-off, “Take good care of you, for me” which is how he signed his love letters to Phyllis while he was in the Navy. Several moves from New York brought him and his family to Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Northern Virginia as he

developed his craft as a radio personality. He then pursued opportunities in Program Engineering at Mutual News for a couple of years. He and Phyllis retired to Wells in 1997 after 20 years with The Voice of America, which broadcasts news and programming around the world. They delighted in their travels together on cruises, trips to Europe, California, and Hawaii, and shared a wide circle of friends who loved their company. Their time living in Maine was highlighted by appreciating the natural beauty, cultural experiences at the Ogunquit Playhouse, Ogunquit Museum of Art, and live music events throughout the area. He enjoyed volunteering at the Senior Center and in community activities, especially annual outings with Santa and the “elves” who visited the special needs children at Waban in North Berwick. They moved to a lovely retirement community in North Carolina in the summer of 2016. Listening to music and singing was his passion, especially Rat-Pack era music, oldies, and classic scores from musical films and theater. He was comfortable in front of a microphone and was often called on to MC events well into his retirement. THANK YOU ST. JUDE:

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

His warmth and caring made him charming and likeable. He could captivate his audience with stories, filled with no shortage of detail, sharing his pride of his Sicilian heritage, and reminiscing about his time in the Navy. He had a sentimental side, was a fierce defender of the underdog, and felt compassion and empathy for people in need. Anthony will be missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Lymphoma Research Foundation (www.lymphoma.org / 1-800-500-9976). A private Celebration of Life ceremony is planned in August on what would have been his 90th birthday. • • • • • • • • • •

FINANCE & CAREER What To Know About Subscription Services
These days, just about everything can be purchased as a subscription. Video and music streaming services are hugely popular. Meal delivery services provide pre-measured ingredients and easy recipes on a subscription basis. You can sign up for regular shipments of snacks, clothing, personal grooming products, makeup, vitamins, pet toys, wine, and the list goes on. What should you know about a subscription service before you sign up? The Better Business Bureau offers the following tips to help you get the most out of subscription services while watching your budget. Do plenty of research. Take time to research a company before you sign up for a subscription or trial. Find the company on social media and review their account. Check www.bbb.org to see if the company has a good business rating, and look online for consumer reviews. Do an online search of the company including the words “scam” or “complaint” to reveal any red flags you should be aware of. Investigate free trials. Free trials can be a good way to get to know a company and try out a product, but make sure you understand how they work. Before
you sign up, find out how long the trial period lasts, what exactly you are agreeing to, and how and when to cancel if you decide not to subscribe. If any of this information is confusing or unavailable, take your business elsewhere. The Federal Trade Commission adds this warning about free trials, “Free means free. Be suspicious of companies that offer something free but say you have to pay to get it. You may be dealing with a scammer.” Understand how auto-renewal works. Auto-renewals are a convenient way to keep your subscription current if you decide you like the service. On the expiration date, the company charges your credit or debit card and the subscription renews for another period. Keep in mind that companies must send you a renewal notice, which is a brief reminder that your subscription is about to renew, ahead of time. Always check your bank and credit card statements to make sure the cost is what you expected. If you notice a price jump, it could be that you were signed up for a promotional period that ended. Know how to stop a subscription. There are three ways you can stop automatic payments from your bank account according to consumerfinance.gov: Contact
$380K to Modernize Unemployment System WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that the Maine Department of Labor has been awarded a total of $382,579 to promote and enhance its Short Time Compensation (STC) program, which allows workers to receive a partial unemployment benefit payment while their employer reduces their hours to avoid layoffs. “As we continue to combat this public health crisis, it is crucial that we maintain the safety net that supports individuals whose hours have been reduced
through no fault of their own,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “We welcome this funding, which will help the Maine Department of Labor modernize its unemployment system and ensure that Mainers can continue to receive the relief they need.” The Maine Department of Labor will use the funding to raise awareness of the state’s STC program and its benefits, increase participation, and streamline reporting by participating employers and workers to the Maine Bureau of Unemployment Compensation.
the company to revoke payment authorization, call and write your bank or credit union informing them you’ve revoked payment authorization, and/or give your bank a “stop payment order.” Usually, contacting the company to revoke authorization is sufficient to cancel a subscription, but monitor your bank statements closely anyway. If you still see unwanted charges, you may need to take further action.
Cancel unwanted subscriptions early. Instead of waiting until the last minute to cancel a subscription or free trial, The New York Times says, “there is generally no drawback to ending payments ahead of time.” You can usually cancel early and still enjoy the remaining time left on your subscription for that billing period. Calendar alerts can also help you keep track of when to cancel a subscription, so you don’t forget and
end up paying for an extra subscription term. Periodically review your active subscriptions. If you aren’t careful, you could lose track of what subscription services you are paying for. To maintain your financial health, Forbes reminds consumers to figure out how much they are spending on subscriptions. PeriSee SUBSCRIBE page 29...
$105M for Colleges & Universities
WASHINGTON, D.C. Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME) announced $105,688,374 in emergency funding for colleges, universities, and students in Maine under the American Rescue Plan. The funding will help local institutions cope with the severe financial fallout from the pandemic and continue serving their students safely. At least half of the funding each institution receives will be distributed in the form of emergency cash assistance grants to students who are facing hunger, homelessness, and other hardship. “Maine students and institutions of higher learning have faced significant financial hardships due to the pandemic,” said Pingree. “I supported the American Rescue Plan to help students who are grappling with serious challenges like hunger and homelessness. This significant educational investment will go a long way to ensure students can get on track and complete their degrees at schools that are operating safely. I’m proud to have voted for this historic aid package, which will help us to defeat the pandemic, support students, and build a stronger local economy.” The colleges and universities in Maine receiving funding under
the American Rescue Plan include: Southern Maine Community College: $11,402,078; University of Maine: $22,180,539; University of New England: $5,211,619; University of Southern Maine:
$15,137,560 and York County Community College: $2,400,173. Students should contact their institutions for more information about how they can apply for an emergency grant.

~ News ~ ...HAIR from page 18 face, instead of toward the back of your scalp and neck. Also, long hair weighs more, so on its own, it can put more traction on the follicles.” Brushing your hair regularly, however, is good because it massages the scalp and helps improve blood flow and circulation. The condition of your hair should also be in balance – not too oily, not too dry. “Finally, don’t overuse a hair
dryer because that can make hair weak and brittle, which can lead to more hair loss,” Angelos says. Treat health issues. Hormonal imbalances and other medical conditions such as low thyroid and iron or iodine deficiency can contribute to hair loss, Angelos says. “Avoid overuse of supplements and medications,” he says. “Since supplements such as testosterone, human growth hormone, whey, and DHEA can cause thinning and hair loss, especially avoid ex-
cessive use of these.” Be aware of your nutritional needs. Some fad diets may have a nutritional impact on hair loss. “It’s really important to eat a healthy balance of carbohydrates, proteins, and fat,” Angelos says. He also recommends taking a multivitamin that includes vitamins A, B complex, C, D and E, along with the minerals zinc, iodine and iron, all of which help with hair health. Avoid unhealthy environments. The negative health effects
of smoking are well known, especially related to lung cancer. But one more reason to avoid smoking, Angelos says, is that it can affect hair loss. In addition to smoking, other environmental factors that can contribute to hair loss include environmental exposures like radiation and air pollution. When efforts to prevent hair loss fall short, those who prefer to avoid baldness can explore the possibilities that modern science provides.
“Not every patient needs hair transplantation, though,” Angelos says. “Especially when it comes to younger patients, it may be best to start with other options. Since the reasons for hair loss vary from person to person and are unique to their circumstances, a good place to start is by determining the cause of hair loss in the first place, and then go from there.” The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.

Richard C. Strobel, 61 KENNEBUNK – Richard C. Strobel, who was a resident of Kennebunk and formerly of North Andover, MA, died peacefully at his Kennebunk home on Tuesday, July 27, 2021. Rick was born on May 25,1960 in Lawrence, MA, son of Kenneth F. and Janet Gilchrist Strobel, and was a graduate of North Andover High School Class of 1978. He worked at the marina in Wells as a teenager and went on to become a commercial fisherman in Florida. After returning to New England, he was a general handyman much like his grandfather Carl Gilchrist whom he adored. There was nothing that Rick was not able to do – he was a painter, carpenter and mechanic.
Rick was an avid Red Sox fan and loved all of the New England Sports teams. He enjoyed spending time at the beach house in Wells which he helped build as a child, going out fishing in his father’s boat or as Rick adoringly referred to him as “Nemo”, spending time with family and friends, and doing anything he could to make those around him smile. He is predeceased by his soulmate Katrina, who died in January of this year. Rick will be sadly missed by his parents, Janet and Ken Strobel of Wells Beach and North Andover, MA; two sisters, Kendra L. Strobel of Andover, MA, and Deborah E. Messineo and her partner Gary Perusse of Methuen, MA; along with three nephews, Travis, Tyler, and Trevor Messineo; niece Kayla F. Strobel; and his beloved rabbit Gigi. An hour of visitation was held on Tuesday, August 3, at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, followed by a funeral service, and interment at Ocean View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests for donations to be made in Rick’s memory to NAMI Maine (www.namimaine.org) so that others may be assisted with their mental health challenges.
To share a memory or leave a message of condolence, visit Rick’s Book of Memories Page at www.bibberfuneral.com. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk. • • • • • • • • • •
Harold W. “Whitey” White, Jr., 79 ELIOT – It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of our father, Harold W White, Jr., who passed peacefully on July 18, 2021. He was predeceased by his wife Susan White, mother Bertha Melia White, father Harold W. White Sr., and brother Austin White. He is survived by his children, Amy White Bregy and Devin White; step-children, Rick Provost, Robert Provost, Kimberly McCarron, and Paul
WS
Provost; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters Jeanette White Deardroff and Roberta J. White Frampton; brother Stephen White; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was called “Whitey” by all who knew him. He had an infectious laugh and a great love for the outdoors. He was a hunter and fisherman when he was not driving CDL or working as maintenance in many seafood restaurants. He was a lover of the sea and the earth. His love to be in nature was one of his many charms, as well as his love of music and family gatherings. He loved a good BBQ or wedding, always the life of the party. He enjoyed quiet time watching the birds with Susan. They loved to explore nature together, and hunted and fished together. He will be greatly missed but always remembered. There will be a Celebration of Life BBQ for close family and friends this summer to honor the life and memories of Whitey. That will be announced once there is a final date. Please share his memories as we did not know all his adventures and would love to hear yours! Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home. Stories and condolences may be shared at www.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com.
People and Business Profiles Maine Osteopathic Association Honors Dr. Munroe YORK COUNTY The Maine Osteopathic Association (MOA) recently held its first live event in more than a year at the Samoset Resort in Rockport, where they offered continuing medical education sessions to its members. The hybrid event allowed osteopathic physicians and guests to gather both in person or virtually . During an Awards Luncheon to celebrate the contributions of osteopathic physicians in Maine, York Hospital’s Christine Munroe, DO of Eliot, was honored as the recipient of the 2021 Roswell P. Bates, DO Public Service Award. The award is named after Roswell P. Bates, DO, who was a prominent and active contributor in osteopathic medicine and beyond, in Maine. Nominations for Dr. Munroe highlighted her attitude of selfless service, a cornerstone of the Bates Award tradition. Bruce Bates, DO, son of Roswell Bates, presented the award, explaining that his late father “felt strongly that the privilege of being a physician required an acknowledgement of that privilege through service

above oneself.” Dr. Munroe, a University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNE COM) graduate, joined York Hospital in 2007. She sees patients at Great Works Family Practice in South Berwick and is also known for her work in substance use disorder and recovery. Dr. Munroe played a key role in establishing York Hospital’s Recovery Center which offers outpatient treatment for patients with substance use disorders and for those affected by
others’ use, and during this past year has continued to manage 25-30 Recovery Center patients in individual and group Zoom meetings in addition to her family medicine patient panel at Great Works. She is on call 24/7 for the Recovery Center patients and the emergency room, initiating intakes and protocols at all hours. Dr. Munroe also serves on the Death with Dignity Committee at York Hospital, serves as a board member for the Maine Board of Osteopathic Licensure, and has consulted for the Governor’s council on the opiate epidemic. She also volunteers in her community, including teaching first aid to a local Brownie troop. It is because of her selfless service to her patients and greater community that she was chosen as the Bates Award recipient. Upon being notified of Dr. Munroe’s award, York Hospital President and CEO Dr. Patrick Taylor stated: “We are honored to recognize Dr. Munroe for receiving this well-deserved award. Put together a gentle schedule with a mixture of activities that your family will enjoy like dining, camping and games. Add a theme for the week, day or evening. A luau theme can be carried through with costumes, food and activities. A sports theme can have everyone in team jerseys and doing sports activities. Use creative names for meals and activities to spice things up. not under drought conditions). Map where activities will occur in the yard. A lawn area may be the site of soccer, bocce ball or croquet, but it can also double as an overnight camping zone for the kids in a family tent. The fire pit can be used for roasting hot dogs for lunch or s’mores at night. Crafts, potting plants, and eating can happen at a picnic or dining table. Assess what you have and consider their creative uses. Lounge chairs, sports and play equipment can be used for their original purposes, but they can also become part of an amazing obstacle course. The wheelbarrow used for gardening and yard work can become part of a family field day. The playset your children adore can become a fun breakfast spot or reading area. Spruce up your yard. Mow the lawn and trim the bushes. Tidy overgrown areas. Add flowering plants and rearrange planters for visual appeal. Put delicate flowers in pots and out of the way of foot traffic. Now may be the time to add a picnic table, a badminton net or croquet course, planters, patio, grill, fire pit, or pergola to your backyard. Organize for fun. Identify zones for different activities. Dining, lounging and reading may be best in shady spots. Sports, family yard games and tossing a ball to your dog may be better on a lawn that can handle rough and tumble play.

Hammocks, lawn chairs, swings, picnic blankets and air mattresses can all provide a place for people to sit down and cool off. Use the opportunity to learn about backyard wildlife and nature. Ask kids to take an inventory of the many birds, butterflies and other wildlife they see, looking up their species and background. Put up a bird feeder or plant a butterfly garden, as well as potted flowering plants to support birds and pollinators. Add wind chimes, rain collectors, or backyard thermometers and wind gauges to help kids observe science in action. Design new games incorporating your green space. Hold a nature scavenger hunt that’s both fun, educational and tests your family’s observational skills. Create an outdoor movie theatre by bringing laptops outside or use a projector to show films on a sheet or screen that is hung outside. Build anticipation. Talk about your backyard staycation in advance with your family and review your plans. Count down the days to build excitement about spending time together in your family yard.
