By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer OGUNQUIT Music makes life worth living for Pastor Jeffrey Patnaude of the Ogunquit Baptist Church. It’s a blessing from God, he says, one that he’s savored since childhood in Farmington, Maine. It was there that he first learned he loved singing and went on to wow audiences as the star of such shows as Peter Pan, Pippin and Fanny at church and in school. “I loved singing — it was my thing. It’s a gift from God, and I feel blessed,” said the affable Patnaude. He moved on from musicals in Maine to majoring in opera at the University of Hart-
ford’s Hartt School of Music in Connecticut. “Pavarotti was big then, and I wanted to try it. Opera is amazing,” said Patnaude, a tenor like the late Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti. He sang as a church soloist at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford, where he met his wife Mary Beth, who sang in the choir. They married out of college and went on to New York City, where he earned a master’s in vocal performance at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City and she pursued a degree in occupational therapy at Columbia. After grad school, he sang professionally with Leiderkranz

Opera Theatre and Brandenburg Opera. “It was fun singing for two companies and living in New York,” he said. He also worked as a computer technician, which led to his call to the ministry. “I listened to Christian radio in my car and felt God calling me. I asked my brother-in-law, a priest, ‘how do you know if you’re being called?’ He said, ‘sometimes you just have to try it,’ “ he recalled. The Patnaudes, who then had a 1-year-old, the first of their five sons, decided to give it a try in 2000, moving from Manhattan to Gordon-Conwell Seminary in Wenham, Massachusetts. They’ve never looked back. Music is still a huge part of Patnaude’s life. He loves sharing it with his congregations, including his first at the West Harpswell Baptist Church in the midcoast region and in Ogunquit for 11 years. Patnaude presides over a dedicatory concert at the church on Sunday, August 5 at 7 p.m. to celebrate the recently refurbished organ. Internationallyacclaimed organist Dr. Joyce Jones, a music professor and organist in residence at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, will perform. Faucher Organ Company of Biddeford handled the
