Couple Celebrates 78 Loving Years YORK York residents Charles Donald Downing, 99-yearsold, and his wife, Irene Tibbetts Downing, 96-years-old, were married 78 years ago on July 15, 1939. It was August 2, 1937, while Don was at York Beach walking up Railroad Ave, where he met the lovely Irene Tibbetts who was walking the other way. Neither of them remembered where they were going. They went to the York Beach Casino together and the two danced there every night until Labor Day. Don would hitchhike from South Berwick every day and hitchhike home every night. Two years later they married. Don was born Charles Donald Downing, son of Charles Weston Downing and Daisy Furbish Downing. Don and Irene are parents of four children, Jere, Diane, Larry, and Skip. They have five grandchildren and now one great grandchild, a baby boy named Charles Henry Downing.

event in history stands out as being especially good or especially bad, Don’s answer was when the Twin Towers were hit by airplanes. He was in his living room watching the TV and saw the second tower hit with a second airplane. He also remembered years ago when he and Irene sat parked on the shoulder of the road listening to a radio announcer relate the events of the Pearl Harbor attack. Don served in WWII and became 2nd Lieutenant. Don also shared that his proudest moment might have been when watching his sons Larry and Skip play “Bugler’s Holiday at York High School. “I’ve had so many blessings, he said. “When they played that song at York High School, the whole place was silent for about 20 seconds and then burst into applause. ~ News ~ Kennebunk Savings Supports Community Land Conservation With Gift KENNEBUNK Kennebunk Savings has awarded the Mount Agamenticus to the Sea Conservation Initiative (MtA2C) $50,000 to support land conservation in southernmost York County and environmental programming for people of all ages. MtA2C is a collaborative effort of 10 partner groups working to conserve land centered on Mt. Agamenticus in York, stretching from the Tatnic Hills in South Berwick to the rocky coast in Kittery. MtA2C has a long-term goal of connecting 19,000 acres of conserved land in the region and has made sig-

nificant progress since launching in 2002 -- the region already boasts 13,500 acres of open space. MtA2C partners are also engaging with local community groups to ensure that the conserved lands serve the community in a range of ways including school programs, guided hikes and farming. The MtA2C focus area is a biological hotspot, containing the largest unfragmented coastal forest between the New Jersey Pine Barrens and Acadia National Park, and represents the most biologically diverse region in Maine. It also protects drinking water for three towns and

feeds clean water to rivers and popular beaches. “This generous gift allows us to move forward in protecting lands that are important to our regional communities for so many different reasons, says MtA2C Coordinator Karen Young. “MtA2C envisions thriving communities connected by expansive landscapes that help sustain wildlife and enhance the health and well-being of our citizens. This funding supports our progress toward that mission. The funding from Kennebunk Savings will support land conservation projects by MtA2C’s three local land trust

partners, including Kittery Land Trust’s (KLT) 150-acre Brave Boat Headwaters Preserve and Great Works Regional Land Trust’s recent acquisition of 16 acres within their Orris Falls Conservation Area in South Berwick. These and other MtA2C properties offer community access to pristine outdoor environments as well as educational opportunities for local school groups. For example, Marshwood Middle School science teacher Scott Carson has taken his 6th grade class to Orris Falls each spring for the past 8 years to identify and document changes in the seasons. The Orris Falls Conservation Area now encompasses 187 acres, and fills in a corridor of preserved land between Orris Falls and Mt. Agamenticus. These types of connections are central to MtA2C’s mission of knitting together patchworks of protected lands to fulfill landscape-scale preservation available to the community at large.

~ News ~ Funding Clears Key Hurdle WASHINGTON D.C. THE Senate Appropriations Committee has approved more than $7 million for the maintenance dredging of the Saco River, York Harbor, and Wells Harbor. The funding was included in the Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill at the request of U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a senior member of the Committee. “Small ports and harbors are the economic lifeblood for many of our small coastal communities, says Senator Collins. “I appreciate that this bill supports the water infrastructure needs of states like Maine, including the funding for the maintenance dredging of the Saco River, York Harbor, and Wells Harbor. The Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill will now be considered by the full Senate.

Marshwood Student Honored SOUTH BERWICK Katherine Wilder is a 13-year-old who, at age 3, was diagnosed with juvenile spondyloarthropathy (JSpA.), a rheumatic disease that primarily causes pain and inflammation in the joints of lower parts of the body, but can also affect other body parts. “It's hard trying to do normal teenage girl things like playing sports or going on field trips without a wheelchair," said Katherine. In spite of her challenges, Katherine likes to go swimming and play video games with her brothers. She also takes her education very seriously. Katherine is an honor student, 2 years running, a member of the National Junior Honor Society and has been recognized for significant achievement in the field of science by teachers and school administrators. With all her achievements, one of the most important things in her life is being part of the Arthritis Foundation. “I'm helping people with a disease that I understand just as well as anyone because I am one of those people. Katherine has been selected as this year’s JingleBell Run 5K Mini-Series teen honoree. In her role, Katherine will be the face and voice for those who deal with the daily challenges of arthritis. Join her on December 3 in Freeport, December 10 in Portsmouth, NH and on December 17 in Concord, NH. “The money we raise together brings us closer to finding a cure and helping people who have arthritis, she said.

SoirĂŠe Raises over $45,000 for York Hospital’s Hancock Family Fund YORK Unless French is your native language, it’s a tricky thing remembering where that accent falls on “soirĂŠe.â€? But there’s no question – last Wednesday evening at The York Harbor Reading Room, while the focus was on raising funds and healthy aging, the accent was definitely on fun, at the second annual York Hospital Hancock Summer SoirĂŠe. To celebrate and strengthen the programs that benefit from The Hancock Family Fund for Healthy Aging, York Hospital and The Hancock Family hosted a party with a purpose – with success – raising $45,000+ to support its many services. The fund itself, was created to honor the lives of Cape Neddick residents Frank & Kay Hancock, who embodied the classic art of enjoying life while aging with grace and humor. A former Attorney General of Maine, and Hospital Board Chair, Frank was a powerful, yet diplomatic and approachable intellect who easily blended commitment to his community and family. Kay, always strong and caring, a Hospital Trustee, realtor and chair of many committees— maintained her wit and mental edge until the age of 91. Their children, Cal, Josh and Emi continue their parents’ commitment to York Hospital as they work to create these events from their respective homes coast to coast. The fund that bears their family name is already helping to support a cache of programs including: Senior Transportation for hospital needs, Strength and Balance Workshops, Meal & Prescription Home Deliv-

ery, ‘Neighborhood Network’ providing screened vendors for in-home projects, Creative Art Classes through York Housing Authority and Medicare Information Meeting with personal one on one counseling sessions. “Our second year, and our programs are blossoming in ways that we can see through our patients’ eyes and hear through their stories. Lillian, who just completed the Strength & Balance Workshop after a bad fall is able to remain in her home‌ and Pat, after a stroke and unable to cook, receives all of her meals delivered— ‘rich in vitamin K and now my six children don’t have to worry.’ I think that Frank & Kay are looking down, maybe with golf clubs in hand‌ definitely smiling,â€? offers Jud Knox, President. The 130 guests were met by the red carpet photo opportunity “step and repeatâ€?, followed by posters of inspirational local “Healthy-Agersâ€? celebrated for their varied approaches to maintaining physical, mental, spiritual and overall well-being in addition to their ‘senior status’! The appetizers were enjoyed by all‌ and graciously provided by Hancock Gourmet Lobster Company owner, Cal Hancock, followed by a surf and turf dinner. The remainder of the evening was filled with laughter, hosted by many, from Hospital President Jud Knox and Josh Hancock, to former Maine Speaker of the House and now gubernatorial candidate Mark Eves, the latter speaking to the issues facing Maine seniors today. Perhaps the crowd was found at its quietest when Jonathan Goldsmith, friend of Josh Han-

Tie Dye T-Shirts Celebrate Field Day SOUTH BERWICK Every year the Marshwood Central School PTO works with students to tie-dye T-shirts for field day. Each grade level has a different colored shirt and the students and staff gather to form a letter. This year is was "M" for Marshwood. The Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance is a leader in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and policy. outside the home, including the garage. 3- Not unplugging appliances. Most people forget all about unplugging appliances and devices, and when the electricity finally turns back on this can cause dangerous spikes and surges that can ruin the appliances or devices. 4- Candles as a main lighting source. Candles can be a huge fire hazard, especially when you put young children, pets, etc. in the mix. There are many other options, like flashlights, that do the trick without the risk. 5Eating expired foods. While a freezer can stay cold for up to 48 hours (depend-

ing on capacity, model, etc.) after losing power, it is still important to take extra caution when consuming frozen or perishable foods. 6- Not putting your phone in airplane mode. While extended periods without power can be boring, and you may be tempted to play Candy Crush until you drain every last drop of battery power from your phone, it’s important to keep it charged and usable for as long as possible in case the power outage turns into an emergency situation. Putting your phone in airplane mode will extend thebattery life, while turning it off until you need it will conserve battery power.

Garden Tour in Eliot

“Eliot Stories Project Complete ELIOT After months of research, interviews with town elders, and field trips into the community, second grade students at Eliot Elementary School unveiled the mural they created entitled “Eliot Stories. Students worked with artists in residence Laurie Downey and Gretchen Berg from The Local Stories Project. In collaboration with classroom teachers and the Eliot Historical Society, students were challenged to become stewards of Eliot’s rich past. Each student kept a research journal that included sketches and written notes to document their historical discoveries. These journals were later used to create the mural,

and to develop a physical theatre performance that would allow the children to share what they had learned not only with their fellow students at Eliot Elementary School, but also with members of the greater Eliot community. On Monday, June 12 the mural was unveiled and students were delighted to share their physical theatre performance with families and many members of the community. This project was generously funded by grants received from Marshwood Education Foundation, the PEEPS, Investments for Children, and the Eliot Historical Society. Guthrie attained international attention at age 19 by recounting the true events on the album Alice's Restaurant in 1967. Perhaps the best known is Hobo's Lullaby (1972) featuring a diverse body of work. Most notable is the definitive version of Steve Goodman's The City of New Orleans that was a hit on all major charts. ~ Ask The Computer Lady~ Dear Computer Lady, Thank you so very much for all the helpful info throughout the years. You are very much appreciated. I am in my 70s and not very computer savvy. Recently I had a popup on my computer repeating my computer was infected with a virus, and for me not to close my computer as that could damage it. It instructed me to call a phone number. The voice kept repeating that someone was hacking my computer attempting to get my bank account password and my credit card information. I panicked an called the phone number. A man with a heavy Indian accent answered. He asked my name and zip code. I gave this to him, and he was then able to give me my address. He asked a few more questions and then told me that hackers in Houston, Texas and Beijing, China had attempted to hack my computer several times

He said he would try to help me clear the problem. He asked that I press the windows logo and the letter R at the same time, then asked what was shown on my screen. He then told me to press the windows logo and the letter D and again asked what was shown on my screen. He then told me that he was not able to help me, but he was transferring me to a professional who would be able to help me. I asked if there was a charge for this, and he said there would probably be a small charge. I told him, no that I would see what I could do. Before I could close down, there were some letters and numbers that quickly appeared on my screen. I have mcAfee and Malwarebyte. I ran both scans. Can you please tell me what happened when I pressed the windows logo and the letter R and the windows logo and the letter D? Am I

at risk? Did I give this person remote control to my computer? Thank you for your help. Respectfully, Maria Dear Maria, First, I want to thank you for this detailed description of what is becoming a common scam. Usually the scammer takes control of your computer, proceeds to "fix" problems that are not really there, then charge you hundreds of dollars. Sometimes they even lock you out of your computer until you pay up. If I had your name and zip code, I could find your address on any number of websites like 411.com, whitepages.com, and anywho.com just to name a few. When you pressed the windows logo key and the letter R, it opened the "Run" dialog box. It allows you to run any program on your computer just by typing in a command. Depending on what the scammer had you type in that dialog box he might have been able to take control of your computer. I just don't have enough information to know for sure. When you press the windows logo key and the letter D, that just minimizes all your windows and shows you the desktop. That is probably how he got the pop-up to go away. In

the future, if you get this kind of pop-up, just hold down the "Alt" key on your keyboard and then press the F4 key in the very top row a few times. The pop-up will close and if you press F4 enough times, your computer will restart. That usually fixes the problem. NEVER CALL THE NUMBER, IT IS ALWAYS A SCAM! Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have not been able to get into my Facebook since I got a new computer several months ago. Still get it on my old computer. I believe the problem may be because I signed up with an old email address because they want to send a text to me at the old address and I can't receive of course. Also, I did something dumb. I thought I was changing my name on my account which I thought would bring the old one back, but all it did was create a new account which I don't want. I hope I've been reasonably clear. Thanks for listening and hope you can help. Thank you, Virginia Dear Virginia, It sounds like your old computer has your Facebook password saved, but you don't know what it is anymore so you can't

use it on your new computer. To make things worse, the email address that FaceBook has for you is an old one that you no longer have access to. Hopefully, your experience will be a warning for those who don't keep their account information updated. There are a couple of things you can do in this case. A good computer tech should be able to get the passwords out of your old computer for you, so ask around at your local computer shops. If that doesn't work, Facebook has a form you can fill out. 1. On the new computer, go to the Facebook login page and click, "Forgot Account" in the topright corner of the page. 2. Fill out the form with your old email address and click, "Search".3. You will have the option for a text or email to be sent to you. If you don't have access to the old email, and you don't have access to or never set up a cell phone number, click the link on the bottom that says you no longer have access to them. 4. You will now have the opportunity to answer a security question or get help from friends. If you are still unable to login, Facebook should display a form where you can explain your problem. It might take a few days to hear back from them, but they are usually pretty good at resolving the problem. Once you get back into your account, go into account settings and update your email address and add a cell phone number so that you will be able to access the account in the future. BUSINESS & FINANCE

4 Ways Marriage, Divorce and Do-Overs Can Increase your Social Security Check In a world of IRAs, bonds, annuities and investment property, one retirement benefit often gets overlooked, or not discussed at all, by some financial advisers: Social Security. “In retirement, you need to create as much fixed, guaranteed income as you can, says Tony Perrone, president and founder of the Estate Planning Group and author of 'I Didn’t Know I Could Do That: 9 Financial Strategies That Can Save or Make You Money.' “Social Security is just as valuable as any of your other assets. Americans can draw their Social Security as early as 62, for reduced benefits, or as late as 70, for enhanced benefits. When benefits are elected, a retiree makes a permanent choice, meaning benefits are reduced over the course of a lifetime, not just until full retirement age. The social Security break-even age is 77, or 15 years after the first retiree elected to receive benefits.

Perrone says those who are contemplating when to take their Social Security benefits shouldn’t automatically take the largest check they are eligible for and assume they are making the right decision. “None of us has crystal balls, Perrone says. “But if you think there’s a good chance you might live longer than average, or if you’re just an optimist, you might want to think about going for the maximum monthly payment. Once it starts, it’s locked in for life. Perrone provides some additional tips and strategies for getting the most out of your Social Security benefits: Don’t forget the widow’s benefit. If you are a widowed woman and don’t get remarried, you can file for Social Security at the age of 60. This is known as the widow’s benefit. The rule applies to men as well. If your wife earned more than you, you are entitled to widower’s benefits. When a widow or widower, or a surviving ex-spouse, waits until age 60 or later to re marry,

they preserve the right to collect Social Security benefits on their deceased spouse’s earnings record. Divorce can have fringe benefits. Women who were divorced after being married for at least 10 years are eligible for a portion of their ex-husband’s benefits if she is unmarried at the time they become eligible for benefits. That claim does not reduce the ex-husband’s benefits or those of his new spouse if he re-marries. Marriage can be a strategic tool. When a spouse dies, the remaining spouse gets the larger of

the two Social Security checks. If the surviving spouse gets remarried, he or she is then subject to that law with the new spouse. In other words, if a widow gets re-married, and her second husband dies, she is eligible for the benefits of her second husband if he made more money than her. You get a do-over. If you decide to take your Social Security benefits, then realize you made a mistake, the Social Security Administration will allow you to repay the money you took within 12 months and wipe the slate clean as if it never happened.

“Follow your own instincts when it comes to when and how to take your Social Security benefits, Perrone says. “This is an important part of your overall retirement strategy. Tony Perrone, (www. DropHelp.com), is president and founder of the Estate and Business Planning Group. For 16 years, Perrone was host of the popular radio talk show Now You Know on FM 96.5 News Talk WDBO in Orlando. Health & Fitness Are Women Prepared for Life Alone as they Age?

The trends are clear – as women age the odds are they will be living alone, largely because of either divorce or widowhood. What may be less clear for many of them is whether they are prepared for that life alone – both emotionally and finan-

cially, says Susan L. Hickey, a financial professional at Your Own Retirement LLC. “Although both men and women could live three or four decades in retirement, it’s more likely for women because they have longer life expectancies, Hickey says. “But they also often

have less in savings, and smaller or no pensions, so their longevity can work for them and against them. Almost half (46 percent) of women who are 75 or older live alone, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for

Community Living. But women, many of whom are heads of households, don’t always do a good job of planning for their retirements because they spend so much of their time thinking about the needs of others – their children, their spouses, their aging parents, Hickey says. “They need to realize that their happiness and security in their later years can hinge on so many things, and not just their savings, she says. “So many factors come into play. Hickey says some mistakes women make in planning for retirement, and what they can do to correct those mistakes, include: Failing to participate in planning. Many women traditionally have left the retirement planning to their husbands and that’s a mistake, Hickey says.

Women should be actively involved. They need to understand their financial situation, what would happen if their spouse dies and where all the important papers are kept. When a meeting happens with a financial professional, they should be part of that and help make the decisions. Underestimating how long they will live. For some reason, many women have trouble imagining just how long retirement might last. Life expectancy for women in the United States is about 81, and that’s an average. Many women will live into their 90s and some will pass 100. When planning and saving, women need to consider that they might still be living 30 or 40 years after they retire. See ALONE page 19...

Health & Fitness ...ALONE from page 18 Failing to protect their health. Maintaining your general health and well being is important because medical costs can eat into retirement money. The nest egg that someone thought would be more than sufficient can start disappearing quickly when there are significant

medical issues. Women need to make sure they get exercise, eat healthy meals and keep up with those doctor visits. “So much of this is connected, Hickey says. “When women feel that they have a good financial plan in place, they are more likely to feel secure and that’s good for both physical health and their emotional health. DHS and Labor Departments to Issue 15,000 H-2B Visas to Support American Jobs

WASHINGTON, D.C. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced that the Departments of Labor and Homeland Security will issue up to 15,000 additional H-2B visas for U.S. businesses to hire temporary workers that will help their businesses operate during the busy summer tourist season. USCIS announced that Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, in consultation

with Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta, has submitted a rule to the Federal Register that will allow U.S. businesses in danger of suffering irreparable harm due to a lack of temporary workers will be able to hire up to 15,000 additional employees under the H-2B program. The H-2B program is vital to small and seasonal employers across the country who depend on temporary workers to sustain their businesses and supplement their

existing American workforce. "Congress gave me the opportunity to provide temporary relief to American businesses in danger of suffering irreparable harm due to a lack of available temporary workers," said DHS Secretary John Kelly. "As a demonstration of the Administration's commitment to supporting American businesses, DHS is providing this one-time increase to the congressionally set annual cap." The H-2B Temporary Non-

Starting this week, eligible petitioners for H-2B visas can file Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker and must submit a supplemental attestation on Form ETA 9142-B-CAA with their petition. A new tip line to report general H-2B abuse and employer violations has also been established. Details on eligibility and filing requirements will be available in the final rule and on a new uscis.gov webpage to be published when the final rule is posted for public inspection. Congress set the annual H-2B cap at 66,000. A maximum of 33,000 H-2B visas are available during the first half of the fiscal year, and the remainder, including any unused H-2B visas, is available starting April 1 through September 30. On March 13, 2017, USCIS received sufficient H-2B petitions to meet the full FY 2017 statutory cap of 66,000. In May, Congress delegated its authority to the Secretary to increase the number of temporary nonagricultural work visas available to U.S. employers through September 30. pectedly Friday July 21, 2017 at the age of 65 while in Maine visiting family and friends. Known by many as Rich, or Ogg, he was a truly legendary man who will be sorely missed. Raised in Kittery, ME where he made many life-long friends. Always up for an adventure- hitchhiking across the country (multiple times) and joining the Navy as a submariner to see the world. Returning to Kittery, Rich worked as a Rigger at PNSY and started a family. He thrived as a father, raising his two children with grit and work ethic, tough but just, and loved them fiercely. His primary goal as a father was to have his kids be better than the best version of himself. He was an active member of the community, coaching Kittery Rec Softball and Basketball, attending his children’s sporting and school events. After retirement he moved to New Port Richey, FL where he made many new friends and reconnected with old friends. Rich enjoyed a daily routine that included a hot cup of joe with his local cohorts to solve the world’s problems one sip at a time. He was always willing to

“And Then There Were Noneâ€? SOUTH BERWICK Ten guilty strangers are trapped on an island. One by one they are accused of murder; one by one they start to die‌ Step back in time into a 1930s radio broadcast studio with Mystery Theatre Radio Hour’s “And Then There Were None,â€? complete with period actors, vintage-style commercials, sound effects, and the spine-tingling twists and turns of this classic Agatha Christie mystery story, Friday and Saturday, August 4 and 5, 6 p.m., with a matinee Sunday, August 6, 2:00 p.m., at Historic New England’s Hamilton House. Bring a blanket, chairs, and picnic for your comfort and enjoyment. The show is being presented by Garrison Players Art Center and is directed by William Burr and Judi Currie. The cast includes Melissa Perry, Ralph M. Wark, Phil Adams, Jay MacDougall, Zak Koehler, Denise McDonough, Paul Langevin, Mike Doyle, Tim Young, Autumn Allen, and Ray Will. Tickets are $10 Historic New England and Garrison

Players Arts Center members, $15 nonmembers, $5 nonmember children (ages 8 and up). Registration is recommended. Contact Historic New England for more information, 207384-2454, HamiltonHouse@ historicnewengland.org or register online at www.HistoricNewEngland.org. The idea for presenting Mystery Theatre Radio Hour began with Historic New England South Berwick Site Manager Marilyn Keith Daly. “As I was working in Hamilton House, I noticed vintage mystery novels in the large parlor bookcases. When we opened some of the books, we discovered the signature of Elise Tyson Vaughan, who owned and restored the house with her stepmother Emily in the early 20th century. I was fascinated, imagining Elise Tyson Vaughan reading mystery novels on a summer evening. Hamilton House is located at 40 Vaughan’s Lane, South Berwick, Maine, 03908, about 20 minutes from Portsmouth, 1 mile off of Route 236 in South Berwick.

~ Pets ~ Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK Animal Welfare Society currently has several senior cats looking for new homes! Yes, everyone loves kittens. They're young, playful, loving, and a blank slate to build a life with. But senior cats are just as deserving and worthy of new homes. Older cats come with their own set of benefits, like already being mostly accustomed to living in a home environment and having

Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Simon is like some people. He just doesn’t like other kitties! But he loves dogs. He even used to carry a dog’s leash in his mouth and walk the dog. He’s remarkable! Simon’s a big boy, a remarkable hunk of a paleorange cougar-like good looks. His love of life and his personality are so strong, he could probably star in his own superhero movie. Like some other Hollywood stars, he’s also quite full of himself. He’s a big talker, and even sings. (He proved it on the three-hour ride back to Wells!) Whoever adopts Simon can have a cat-friendly dog, but no cats. They also have to be very careful about their doors, because Simon is so smart he can open them. Simon must be an indoor-only kitty, but would love a screened-in porch or “catio. Simon is ready to meet you and take center stage in your home! Safe Haven’s commitment to No-Kill includes the entire state of Maine. We try to reach out as much as possible to help with rescue statewide, because all animals deserve life. So once again we drove up to northern Maine where the need is great and the number of homeless animals is overwhelming. Hoping to stay within our means and our space, we planned on saving nine lives on this trip. We returned with 15 kitties and a firm determination to go back and save more as soon as these 15 are adopted and we have space. The rescue workers up north were reduced to tears. Volunteers Needed! With all these additional residents in our adoption center,, some of us volunteers are working even longer hours now. We need additional hands to help with cleaning and feeding. Can you spare a few hours a week? Please help! Call Joyce 229-8314 asap to lend a loving and helping hand.

calmer, easy going personalities. They make ideal companions for anyone more interested in a having a relaxed friend alongside them than running up their walls. It's true that senior cats can have senior problems, but that's no different from any other species. For the most part, senior cats are just as healthy and wellrounded as cats half their age. A domestic cat can live upwards of 20-22 years. That means even a cat in their mid-teens may still have a long life ahead of them. Senior cats can't change being old, so it shouldn't be a detriment towards them finding a loving new home. the adoption fee for senior cats is only $10! Some of our current seniors include: Snickers, a 13 year old fellow who doesn't look a day over 7; Pixel, a 14-year old "little old lady"; Teddy, a 13-year old with lots of personality.

Pets and Driving Properly securing your pet in your vehicle is not only about alleviating this potential driving distraction that could cause an accident. It is also a proactive approach should there be an accident or sudden stop - even a fender bender can injure an unsecured pet. We wear seatbelts for our safety in case of an accident and should take the same care to secure our pets. A pet that is not restrained properly in a vehicle can be seriously harmed or even killed if thrown from a vehicle. Airbags can go off and injure a pet in your lap. In the event of an accident, frightened pets can easily escape from a vehicle and run off. Further, a pet that is not properly secured may not only be harmed but could also put others in danger. Ensuring your pet is safe while traveling means finding the pet safety restraint that is right for him. The right pet safety restraint will not only keep you and your pet safe butalso offer you peace of mind and take one more distraction away. For more information: www.tripswithpets.com.

~ News ~ Old York Holds Third Annual Open Doors of York

YORK The Old York Historical Society holds their third annual Open Doors of York, a home and garden tour, on August 9 and 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s tour opens the doors to historic homes and gardens on York Street. Settled in the 1640s by farmers from Scituate, Massachusetts, the neighborhood has some of the town’s oldest houses, maintained and adapted

for the needs of modern families. The tour will highlight five properties, all of which have been inhabited since York was founded in the 1640s. The houses range in date from 1700 to 1850. “We are very excited to showcase several of York’s oldest homes, says Joel Lefever, Old York’s executive director. “People have been living on these properties for centuries, and the area remains a beauti-

ful, vibrant neighborhood. It is so easy to drive by these houses without paying them much attention, located as they are on busy York Street. However, the properties often extend far in the back, some including extensive gardens, barns, and even an old orchard. For the homeowners on this year’s tour, living in an old house is both a privilege and challenge. Says one owner: “We feel so

blessed to live in a home with so many layers of history. However, we have had to learn how to live creatively in an old house. The ceilings are low, the rooms can be small and awkward, and there are constant maintenance issues. But as Lefever points out, “All the houses on this year’s tour have one thing in common— they are full of charm. This tour is a singular opportunity to see these unique homes, some of which have played a notable role in York’s history. The York Street Baptist Church, designed by York architect Edward C. Blaisdell, and built in the 1890s, will also be open to tour. The church is noteworthy for its sixteen stained glass windows. A picnic lunch catered by Chef Jason Miller of York 54 will be available at a tented venue in one of the gardens. The boxed

lunch includes: a mini heirloom tomato BLT, a herb roasted chicken skewer, roasted corn on the cob, toasted orzo pasta salad with basil pesto and feta, a wedge of watermelon, a bag of Cape Cod potato chips, a big chewy blueberry-oatmeal cookie, and your choice of iced tea, lemonade, or water. Lunch tickets are $15 and are available online when purchasing event tickets in advance, or at the venue. Parking is available at York Street Baptist Church (61York Street), Village Elementary School (124 York Street), and York Middle School (30 Organug Road). The event is a walking tour and is not handicapped accessible. Comfortable shoes are recommended. Three of the houses will have the first and second floors available to tour. Advance tickets for $35 are available immediately, and may be purchased online only at oldyork. org through August 7. Tickets may be purchased on the days of the tour for $40 at the York Street Baptist Church and Village Elementary School parking lots (cash, check or credit card accepted). There will be no tickets sold by phone or at the Museum Center. For more information, visit oldyork.org or call 207-363-1756.

The Weekly Sentinel 5

~ News ~ Scholarships For Trade Students STATEWIDE In June, MoodyÕs Collision Centers and Gilman Electrical Supply teamed up to create the Maine Blue Collar Scholarship, an initiative that awarded thirty-two students throughout Maine with $500 scholarships. These scholarships are specific to students pursuing a job in the trades or those continuing on to trade school with need for tools, tuition, uniforms, materials, etc. All students were required to submit a brief essay explaining what the scholarship would mean to them, and 32 awardees were selected from 65 entries. The essays were moving, one student wrote, Ã’I am starting my own business, I have ¾ of the money saved up and if I get this scholarship I could afford the spool gun to make aluminum welding possible.Ó Students pursuing the trades are often not eligible for scholarships. As one student pointed out, Ã’This scholarship would help greatly as I plan to go into diesel mechanics. I must buy tools, and with this field there are many specialty tools and a large amount of general mechanics toolsÓ. Blue collar companies such as MoodyÕs Collision and Gilman Electric, foresee a vast

shortage of tradesmen and woman in Maine and hope that through the Blue Collar Scholarship initiative they will incentivize the next generation of energized, creative and innovative students to stay and build a future in Maine. As Tom Rothfuss, area manager at Gilman Electrical Supply admitted, ÒThere is a lack of people entering the trades that is creating a crisis in our country, I want to do everything I can to encourage involvement.Ó Shawn Moody, founder of MoodyÕs Collision, was quoted recently in a Fox News article "Our hardest challenge is finding good people, our next recession could be driven by a lack of people to do the work.Ó MoodyÕs Collision is a collision repair facility in Maine, employing 180 coworkers. They will be celebrating their 40th anniversary this year. Gilman Electric has 10 locations in Maine, from Biddeford to Presque Isle.

~ News ~ Riding for a Cure in Pan Mass Challenge SEACOAST On August 5 and August 6, eight riders from York, South Berwick, Wells and Kennebunkport will cycle up to 192 miles in the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) with the goal of raising $48 million for critical research and cancer care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. More than 6,200 cyclists from more than 40 states and eight countries will return to Massachusetts to participate, choosing from 12 routes of varying mileage that run through 46 towns. Cyclists are anywhere between 15 and 84-years-old and range from seasoned triathletes to weekend warriors and everything in between.

“We are thrilled to be approaching our 38th PMC ride weekend. Seeing our growth over the years has been truly incredible and we look forward to achieving our fundraising goal of $48 million for Dana-Farber, said Billy Starr, founder and executive director of the PMC. “We want to wish all of our riders and volunteers a safe and enjoyable ride weekend – I’ll see everyone out on the road. Many riders participate in the PMC to honor a family member or friend lost to, or being treated for, cancer. More than 600 riders and volunteers are cancer survivors or current patients, considered “Living Proof of the PMC mission to

Volunteers, spectators, donors and sponsors are part of the camaraderie on ride weekend, all working together toward a cure. No other single athletic event raises or contributes more money to charity than the PMC. Since 1980, the PMC has raised $547 million dollars for DanaFarber through the Jimmy Fund, its fundraising arm. In fact, the PMC is Dana-Farber’s largest single contributor, raising more than 52 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue. The PMC is presented by the Red Sox Foundation and New Balance. To make a financial contribution to a rider from your town or become a virtual rider, visit www.pmc.org, or call (800) WE-CYCLE. ~ News ~ USCIS Announces Grant WASHINGTON D.C. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is now accepting applications for two funding opportunities under the Citizenship and Assimilation Grant Program. These are competitive grant opportunities for organizations that prepare lawful permanent residents for naturalization and promote civic assimilation through increased knowledge of English, U.S. history and civics. The two programs will provide up to $10 million in grants for citizenship preparation programs in communities across the country. Applications are due by August 6. USCIS wants to expand the availability of high-quality citizenship preparation services throughout the country with these two opportunities: Citizenship instruction and naturalization application services: This opportunity will fund up to 36 organizations that offer both citizenship instruction and naturalization application services to lawful permanent residents. Citizenship instruction only: This grant opportunity will assist nonprofit organizations in establishing new citizenship instruction programs or expanding the quality and reach of existing citizenship instruction

programs. We expect to award up to 10 nonprofit organizations through this opportunity. In doing so, we want to encourage the expansion of the existing field of citizenship instruction programs, particularly those offered by small community-based organizations that have not previously received a grant from us. All 46 award recipients expected to be announced in September. To apply for this funding opportunity, visit grants.gov. For additional information visit uscis.gov/grants or email the USCIS Office of Citizenship at citizenshipgrantprogram@ uscis.dhs.gov. For more information visit uscis.gov or follow us Twitter (@uscis), YouTube (/ uscis), Facebook (/uscis) and Instagram (@uscis).

Wells Road Rangers are Cleaning Up

2 off

WELLS Kathy Graham is a longtime Wells resident who, like so many of us, loves her town. For some time now she’s watched as roadsides have increasingly been scarred by litter. She often thought about taking on the clean-up herself but wasn’t sure how to start...until recently. Not too long ago Kathy picked up a local newspaper and there, in the letters to the Editor, was the answer. The writer, Eileen Willard, spoke of how the melting snow along the sides of the road were giving way to the ugly side of what happens when careless people toss trash out of vehicle windows. Eileen spoke

of a group of ladies, proudly calling themselves the Kennebunk Road Warriors, who were meeting once a week to clean roadsides in their town. Kathy reached out to Eileen Willard; a friendship was formed and from that the Wells Road Rangers was born. Kathy started a grassroots movement of her own enlisting a group of like-minded women to take on Wells roadsides and are now meeting once a week on Thursdays from 8:30-9:30 a.m. So far they’ve done portions of Branch and Crediford Roads. They’re amazed at some of the cast-offs they’ve found - a sink, vacuum cleaners, even screen doors. The group, currently comprised of 4 women, as well as their Kennebunk partners, has become fast friends who usually enjoy a cup of coffee and camaraderie after the clean-ups. Anyone is welcome to join the Wells Road Rangers - you can even form your own team! The Town of Wells is donating safety vests for our Wells Road Rangers to wear and providing large trash bags which the Wells Public Works Department picks up later in the day...no need to bring them to the Transfer Station, we take care of that for you!

If you are interested in making a visible difference to our Town’s landscape and making new friends along the way, please contact the Town of Wells Volunteer Force at 207-361-8130. ...COUPLE from page 1 moment! Prior to the interview, Don mentioned that once, a long time ago, he and his then wife-to-be were in York on the very road that they now live. Irene said to him, “Oh, I’d love to have a house right here! He kept a watch on that place and when the land went up for sale, they bought it, and he built her a house. “And so I built her this house, he said. And during the interview, Don turned to his bride and said, “And I love you more today than I did when I married you!

Vertex Awards $5,000 Scholarship YORK Kate Marshall from York, has been granted a $5,000 'All in for CF' Scholarship to support her attendance at Elon University for the 2017-2018 academic year. Vertex awarded 40 scholarships totaling $200,000 to people living with cystic fibrosis (CF) and their immediate family members through the program, which is part of Vertex’s broad commitment to the CF community. Vertex established the All in for CF Scholarship program to help people with CF and their immediate family members pursue two-year, four-year or graduate degrees. Marshall, an 18-year old woman living with

CF, is one of the first All in for CF Scholarship recipients and is working toward a Bachelor’s degree in communications. The All in for CF scholarships complement other Vertex initiatives that help people with CF live active lives, improve awareness of CF, and support independent basic science and clinical research. “Vertex is focused on discovering and developing transformative medicines for people with CF, but our commitment to the community extends far beyond this, said Jeffrey Leiden, M.D., Ph.D., Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Vertex. “Our new scholarship program reflects the fact

/ <$4/ 00 20 -/$2 2 ĂŠ

that CF impacts entire families by helping people with CF, their caregivers, siblings and children pursue their academic goals. Scholarship recipients were chosen by an independent committee of CF community members based on a submitted essay and an applicant’s demonstrated level of community involvement, financial need, and academic achievement. Vertex thanks the members of the CF community who volunteered to serve on the selection committee for their time and commitment. More information about the All in for CF Scholarship, including biographies for some of this year’s recipients, can be found at www. vrtx.com.
