MTA Announces Plans for Toll Adjustment STATEWIDE Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA) is preparing for a toll adjustment in 2021 to offset losses to revenue caused by the pandemic, to complete important capacity projects, and to preserve the MTA bond rating. MTA will hold Public Meetings in early August to provide information on the changes and take public comment. MTA receives all its revenue through tolls paid by Turnpike users – it receives no federal funds or state gas tax revenue. Due to the decrease in traffic during the pandemic, MTA collected $60 million less in revenue than had been projected. During the 2020 pandemic year, MTA kept Maine contractors employed by investing $106 million in reserves to help sustain the Maine economy, to allow contractors to work safely in reduced traffic, and to complete projects of major significance to the public. MTA’s planned future work includes projects that are necessary to manage mobility throughout the region and add the capacity needed to accommodate future traffic growth. will help ensure that future projects can be completed as scheduled. Bond rating agencies have recently adopted more stringent levels of operating revenue needed to secure bonds. These criteria require MTA to maintain higher levels of revenue to keep its strong bond rating and access to low interest rates. Although MTA is reluctant to raise tolls while the economy is still recovering, MTA has not raised tolls in nearly nine years. It is one of the few agencies in the US that has not done so. Nationally, over 50% of all toll facilities have increased tolls during the pandemic to offset losses. The MTA Board resolved to take the steps necessary to implement changes in toll structure to take effect as of November 1, either by implementing the proposed Toll Adjustments or by adopting alternative measures to raise equivalent revenue. This will increase toll revenue by nearly 13%. Proposed Toll Adjustments: Increase the cash rate at York from $3 to $4 for a passenger car (Class 1) and corresponding rates for remaining toll classes; Increase the current Maine EZPass rate per mile from 7.7 cents to 8.0 cents; Adjust the Class 1 Personal Volume Discount thresholds from a 25% discount to a 20% discount for Maine E-ZPass users making 30 or more trips per month and from a 50% discount to a 40% discount for Maine E-ZPass users making 40 or more trips per month; Limit or eliminate image tolls (I-tolls) that count toward the Class 1 Personal Volume discount. I-tolls are created when an E-ZPass transponder is not present or not read to a valid Maine E-ZPass account. The approximate value of

Bills to Ban Corporate Campaign Contributions, Improve Maine Elections Signed into Law

AUGUSTA In June, Governor Janet Mills signed into law a pair of bills sponsored by Senator Louie Luchini, D-Ellsworth, and supported by Senate President Troy Jackson, D-Allagash, to help strengthen Maine’s voting laws. LD 1417, “An Act Regarding Campaign Finance Reform” will ban corporate campaign contributions in state races. LD 1363, “An Act To Amend the Laws Governing Elections,” will help ensure more Mainers have secure and easy access to voting. “Getting money out of our politics and our government is essential to ensuring that the Maine Legislature remains a governing body of citizens and a governing body that works for its citizens. That starts with the corporate contribution ban.

It makes clear that our democracy is not for sale,” said President Jackson. “By limiting the amount of money flowing into our campaigns, working Maine people can have confidence in their government and elected officials. This move is long overdue.” LD 1417 bans corporations from contributing to individual legislative candidates or legislator-controlled political action committees, otherwise known as leadership PACs. Twenty-two states have already adopted provisions in LD 1417 into state law according to the National Conference of State Legislators, including Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Federal election laws already prohibit corporate contributions to candidates for federal office.

“Maine already has a strong track record of voter participation and civic engagement. These new laws will further improve that tradition and give voters greater confidence that our elections are secure and fair. They’ll also further ensure that local politics aren’t influenced by big corporate spending,” said Sen. Luchini. LD 1363 would make permanent many of the innovative measures the state put in place

votes safely, and the results in terms of voter convenience and accessibility were astounding,” said Secretary of State Shenna Bellows. “Mainers used new procedures like absentee ballot dropboxes and online absentee ballot tracking to turn out in huge numbers. We’re thrilled to make these changes permanent to benefit the people of Maine into the future, so Maine can continue being a leader in conducting free and fair elections.”

Marshwood Presents “In-between Days” A Student-Written Play About The Pandemic SOUTH BERWICK Marshwood High School students performed a staged reading this past weekend of a documentary play they wrote entitled, “In-between Days: A Look Back at Our Pandemic School Year”. It has been especially challenging to choose a play to perform during a pandemic. “With distancing and mask requirements, it just didn’t feel right to do a typical play and act as though things were normal,” says director Josh Livingston. For their one-act play in March, Marshwood performed a Zoom play, “Waiting for the Host,” written by Marc Palmieri in April 2020 during the New

York City lockdown. The play was perfect for their situation. Most of the student-actors were attending school fully remote, so they rehearsed and performed entirely on Zoom. But then restrictions eased, students were able to rehearse in-person after school, and they needed another play to do. “I introduced the idea of a documentary play about the pandemic, and students were excited about the opportunity to write and to record their classmates’ experiences of the past year,” says Livingston. Documentary theatre utilizes interviews, articles, and other primary sources to create a play that addresses a specific histor-

ical or contemporary event. To gather material, the students surveyed or interviewed nearly one hundred Marshwood students. “The very idea of asking people I barely knew personal questions was nerve-racking, to say the least,” says sophomore Chloe Rooney. Once all of the material was collected, the theatre students began pulling it together; in the end they created 18 scenes. Senior Riley Hanscom was involved in all aspects of the project: interviewing, writing, and acting. “I was really inspired by the different experiences that each student had,” says Hanscom. “No one had the same experience, so it was really fun to put all of those into one play.” The students’ stories documented the countless challenges they faced, but they also illustrated a tremendous amount of resilience and reflection

and growth. “It’s plain to see that students have done a lot of soul-searching,” says Living-

ston. “They have taken this time to discover more about who they are and who they want to be.”

Ogunquit Author, Sailor Publishes Children’s Book OGUNQUIT As an educational and humorous book full of excitement, unexpected dangers, amazing encounters, and joyful moments, “Sailing South ‘til the Butter Melts”, is a unique adventure story based on true events. It is the first in a three-part series – The Amazing Adventures of the Sea Cat, Chowder, where Chowder, provides her own view point of all her experiences. Although this series of illustrated chapter books is intended for middle-grade and young adults, they are certainly suitable for sailors and any adult with the heart of a child. The author, LeCain W.

Smith, known to his friends as Captain Lee, was born near the ocean on the southern coast of Maine and was called to the sea early in life. Over the years different sailboats took him on many nautical adventures, and on most every voyage, he had a cat as a companion. With time, his skills came to include teaching sailing and navigation, boatbuilding, boat deliveries, yacht surveying, acting as a harbormaster, and as a licensed captain chartering boats at various locations in the USA. In addition, he wrote several nonfiction books with nautical, historical, and health-related themes. Over the years his publications include Steel Away, The Maritime History of Brooksville, and Our Inner Ocean. While living in Port

Townsend, WA, during the 1980s he spent five years building a fortythree-foot ketch and then completed a six-year voyage around the world. In company with his mate Sheila and trusted sea cat Chowder, this extensive exploration took them through many remote islands of paradise and exotic parts of the world. When it was over, Chowder felt that all their adventures were definitely worth sharing. Since LeCain had produced Far Away, a documentary video about the South Pacific part of their voyage, Chowder decided to tell her own version of the complete story with a trilogy of books, starting with this one: Sailing South ‘til the Butter Melts. SUNDAY, JULY 25 JC & THE ELVIS EXPERIENCE

SUNDAY, AUG. 1 SOUTHSIDE BLUES

Local Author Burt Puts Wells on the Map Again! WELLS Local author Steve Burt put Wells on the map in 2019 when his novel, “The Bookseller’s Daughter”, won the grand prize at the New York Book Festival. The thriller opens when a gargoyle disguised as a hunchbacked nun walks into Annie’s Book Stop on Route 1. The book also won gold at the Mom’s Choice Awards and Best Young Adult Fiction at the New England Book Festival. “I had fun using Wells, York, Kennebunk, and Alfred for the settings — especially some of Wells’ 201 graveyards. Readers have told me they enjoyed reading about familiar landmarks like Maine Diner, Mike’s Seafood, the Elks Club, the granite quarry, and the little cemetery by Bear’s Den RV Park. Hardly anybody was familiar with Thed Heard’s tomb near the entrance to Gregoire’s Campground, where Thed was buried sitting up in his ancient wheelchair inside the mounded crypt. Don’t think I want to be the one to open the door to inspect that gravesite!” This summer the retired pastor and 2004 Bram Stoker Award Winner — Dr. Burt, Stephen King, and King’s son Joe Hill are three Mainers who have won dark fiction’s top prize — has a new mid-tweaker out. This one is a collection of 20 weird tales, New England Seaside, Roadside, Graveside, Darkside.

“Lighthouse Moths” is set at Pemaquid Point, and weaves together two historical events (a shipwreck and a recent rogue-wave drowning) with a legend (the haunted Pemaquid Point Lighthouse). “The Mason’s Leech” is a dog-returnsto-life creeper reminiscent of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary. “Captain James’s Bones,” set in New Harbor, involves a legend, a graveyard, and a Halloween prank gone terribly wrong. “John Flynn’s Banshee” is a punchline story, the final surprise sentence delivering the horrific punch. “Caretaker” gives readers a look at an Augusta felons’ cemetery. And “Night Train to Plantation 13” carries us to a (thankfully) long-forgotten town in the northern Maine woods. These 20 stories that are all very Twilight Zone-ish. Mindtweaking fun with the jumpscares of today’s slasher flicks. Most teens and adults will have a blast with these. Steve Burt can be found many Saturdays chatting with fans and autographing his books at the Kennebunk Artisans Marketplace under the roof of the Waterhouse Pavilion downtown. In August he’ll be under his tent for York Days on August 3-4. And he’ll be at the Summer Solstice craft show at Wells Junior High from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on September 11-12.

“Escape to Margaritaville” a Sunny, Funny Summer Romp, a la Jimmy Buffett vana for COVID-weary patrons — two hours of sheer escape fueled by non-stop boozing, beaching and romance, set to Jimmy Buffett’s pleasure-seeking soundtrack, including his biggest hits “Margaritaville,” “Fins,” “Volcano” and the piece de resistance “Cheeseburger in Paradise.” Buffett fans Greg Garcia and Mike O’Malley (they met on “Yes, Dear,” which Garcia created and O’Malley, a Nashua, N.H. native, acted in) wrote the book, tapping into the successful formula of other jukebox musicals, like “Mamma Mia!,” and wrapping the predictable plot around hit tunes from Buffett’s

By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer OGUNQUIT It’s party time at the Ogunquit Playhouse! Margaritas flow, beach balls bounce, and everyone’s in high spirits — their highest in 18 months. All this bright effervescence comes our way thanks to “Jimmy Buffett’s Escape to Margaritaville.” The frothy, flighty, feel-good musical opened Friday night and hangs around in the island-theme-decorated Leary Pavilion — think colorful party lights strung on high and palmthatched drink and souvenir shacks around the perimeter — through August 28. long, tropic-focused career. It involves beach bums Tully, a guitar-toting-and-singing Buffett-clone, and Brick, a slap-happy, drunken bartender and their fleeting island romances with studious Rachel, a scientist, and pleasingly plump Tammy, her party-hearty galpal, at the run-down Margaritaville hotel. The girls are there for a week of pre-wedding (Tammy’s) drinking and partying, no questions asked — but only after serious Rachel gathers dirt from near the island’s dead volcano for her far-fetched electricity generating invention. There’s also an inkling of romance between hotel owner Marley and aging, eccentric J.D., another beach bum intent on finding hidden treasure. The volcano erupts — of course — sending tourists into a tizzy as they evacuate the island. It also forces Tully to admit he loves Rachel and sends the islanders off to Cincinnati — on J.D.’s seaplane, no less. There, they crash Tammy’s rehearsal dinner, where she quickly ditches Chadd and runs off with Brick to consummate their lust. The whirlwind plot culminates three years later with a wedding — naturally — in the refurbished hotel on the island, now fully recovered from the volcano. Richard J. The entire cast is into “Escape’s” devil-may-care merriment, performing several great production numbers with overthe-top song and dance — and I especially loved the fabulously fun-filled “Cheeseburger in Paradise.” Inventive designs, includ-

Arruda, Founder of Senior Planning Center, was pleased to announce how proud he is of the many Medicare health plan agents the company has statewide. He stated, “When I started the Senior Planning Center years ago, I had no idea we would grow so fast and be a leader of Medicare health plans in Maine. It is all of you, our agents, which have allowed this growth. Even more important, you have helped thousands of seniors save money and secure better benefits with their Medicare health plans. Our mission

Nothing Better Than Doing Nothing in Ogunquit OGUNQUIT The Beach Life has arrived. Online sensation “Nothing Better than Doing Nothing®” (NBTDN) is bringing it’s popular beach vibes and apparel to Ogunquit. Last month, the fast-growing brand opened the doors to its first retail location in Perkins Cove. Since selling their first t-shirt out of a tent on South Beach three years ago, NBTDN has quickly emerged as one of the leading lifestyle brands on the east coast with their wide selection of coastal-themed tees, hats, hoodies, and accessories all with a consistent laid-back message – doing nothing. Asked about the company’s journey to Ogunquit, NBTDN founder and New England native Andrew Pepe said, “When I first

started selling our shirts, I never could have imagined it developing into what it has this quickly. I really did it because I thought it was a fun idea and could bring people a lot of happiness, and maybe a laugh. The support has been amazing, people have really bought in and rallied around the brand. I think we have the best customer community in the world.” With over 1000 square feet of retail space located directly on the Atlantic Ocean in historic Perkins Cove, NBTDN is bringing a one-of-a-kind shopping experience to Ogunquit featuring all their most popular merchandise and breathtaking

views of the ocean and Marginal Way. Also be on the lookout for their Beach Life van around town - You can’t miss it! So, why Ogunquit? “This was my family’s vacation spot growing up. What better place to open our first retail location than right here?” says Pepe. “Great beach town, incredible energy. To be able to bring something like this to a place where I have such fond memories and close ties is a dream come true. We are so excited to be here.”

International Women’s Club Enjoy Cheese Tasting at Three Charm Farm

YORK COUNTY The International Women’s Club Of New England (IWCNE) recently enjoyed a spectacular day at Three Charm Farm, 12 Olde Farnham Road, in Alfred, tasting cheeses and yogurt made of goat and sheep milk. They were also entertained by the antics of playful lamb and goat kids that were only about three weeks old. Ingrid and Ed Sabatini, the owners of Three Charm Farm, purchased the farm in 2012 and have made it their own in so many ways through hard work and love. The Farm House was built in the late 1700s. While being briefed on the

daily life of farming life and the history of the farm by Ingrid, the IWCNE enjoyed several dishes prepared with the farm products, which are sold to both retail stores and restaurants in the area. The International Women’s Club of New England is an organization of women from all walks of life, ethnic backgrounds, religious beliefs, political philosophies and varying ages who come together to promote friendship and understanding among people of different nationalities and cultures. IWCNE welcomes new members. For more information, visit www.iwcne.net.

~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS After living with their kitty and human family for seven years, Speedy and Cuddles were forced to leave their home. The number of pets allowed in their rented home suddenly changed. This began a sad and stressful time for them, and the brothers arrived at our shelter depressed and scared. Safe Haven’s adoption center and shelter is known for our specially designed, cagefree cat rooms, and our compassionate, trained volunteers who handle felines of all personalities and dispositions. Speedy and Cuddles quickly recognized the loving care they were receiving in our care. Both soon shook off their sadness, relaxed and delighted in their sunny new environment. Because the brothers were surrendered, they were deprived of the normal home life they had enjoyed. So we’re looking for an excellent, happy home for them. Both boys are really friendly. They like to be around people, and are used to other kitties,

small dogs and gentle children. They were adored in their prior home and are sweet, well socialized kitties. Both of them love sitting in your lap, being brushed, and are thrilled to chase laser beams. Both of these seven year-olds are in good health, neutered, up to date on shots, and tightly bonded. They even look like bookends, due to the markings on their lovely gray and white coats. Please spread the word about Speedy and Cuddles. Tell your friends and co-workers

about them, if you can’t adopt them yourself. They are remarkable animals. Call Leonore at 207985-3227 or Safe Haven Adoption Center/Shelter 207-646-1611. We hope to see you Tuesday July 27 at Congdon’s After Dark Food Truck Park, 1100 Post Road

1 mounded cup of all-purpose flour Pinch of salt 6 tablespoons of butter 2 mounded Tbsp of finely chopped and pitted green olives 3 tbsp cold water OR buy a premade pie-crust instead and spread the chopped olives in the bottom of the crust once in your pan.

Directions: To make the pastry shell, sift

the flour and salt into a bowl. Rub in small pieces of butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add the olives and cold water and work all the ingredients into a ball of dough. Roll the dough out on a floured surface to make an 8-inch round crust. Prick the base with a fork several times and leave to chill. Cut all the Bell peppers in half lengthways and remove all the seeds and stem. Mix the garlic and oil and brush the inside of the peppers. Place the peppers skin side up on a cookie sheet and then brush the skin side with the remaining oil mixture. Cook in a preheated oven at 400 degrees.

For 20 minutes or until they begin to char slightly. Let the peppers cool slightly and slice thinly ½ wide strips. Arrange in the base of the pastry case, layering with Mozzarella cheese. Beat the eggs, and milk and then add the basil. Season with salt and pepper and pour the mixture over the bell peppers. Put the tart pan on a cookie sheet and return to the oven for another 20 minutes, or until solidified. For extra flavor add 6-10 basil leaves on top of the mixture and push into mixture before cooking. Enjoy!

Transparency About Pesticides Used at Schools Signed into Law AUGUSTA Gov. Janet Mills signed into law a bill from Sen. Mattie Daughtry, D-Brunswick. LD 524, “Resolve, Directing the Board of Pesticides Control To Research Workable Methods To Collect Pesticide Sales and Use Records for the Purpose of Providing Information to the Public,” will improve transparency about what pesticides are being used on school grounds

“This is the first issue I testified about before the Legislature, when I was still in high school. I’m so glad to see this bill move through the legislative process and be passed into law. Greater transparency will help protect our students, school staff and communities,” said Sen. Daughtry. As amended, LD 524, as a resolve, would direct the state Board of Pesticides Control, which is part of the Department

Addressing Racial Disparities in Prenatal Care AUGUSTA Gov. Janet Mills signed into law a bill from Sen. Anne Carney, D-Cape Elizabeth. LD 1113, “Resolve, To Direct the Permanent Commission on the Status of Racial, Indigenous and Maine Tribal Populations To of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, to collect data on pesticides used at schools and determine the best way to share this information with the public. Kathy Murray, integrated pest management entomologist with the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, testified in support of the bill, saying the department “supports making these records more easily accessible to the general public.”

Study and Propose Solutions to Disparities in Access to Prenatal Care in the State,” will help address racial disparities in prenatal care among Maine mothers. “Studies have shown that the prenatal care an expecting mother receives varies greatly by race. This is unacceptable. We need to know what’s at the root at these disparities, so we can address what problems there are and ensure better health outcomes for mothers and children,” said Sen. Carney. LD 1113 would direct the Permanent Commission on the Status of Racial, Indigenous and Maine Tribal Populations to study disparities in access to prenatal care in the state. As amended, the bill would authorize the commission to submit a report

to the Health and Human Services Committee, which would then offer legislation that helps create equity in access to prenatal care in Maine. Maine has a significant racial disparity in access to prenatal care. Data from 2019 shows that in Maine, 90 percent of all women started prenatal care in the first trimester, although less than 75 percent of Black women had prenatal care in the first trimester. In Maine, only 4 percent of all women had no prenatal care until the third trimester, while 12 percent of Black women in Maine had no prenatal care until the third trimester. This is worse than the national rate of 10 percent and is tied with Texas as the worst rate in the country.

STATEWIDE Walmart is inviting customers to take control of their health at Walmart Wellness Day, a free event on Saturday, July 24, where they can get health screenings and wellness resources at pharmacies statewide, as well as immunizations in one easy location. The goal of Walmart Wellness Day is to help customers get back on track with preventive health measures they may have missed over the past year, especially as many families prepare for in-person work and school this fall. “At least 41 percent of Americans delayed care during the pandemic, according to the CDC, and that can lead to negative health impacts in the future. We want to make it simple for

our customers to prioritize their health and catch up on preventive care by offering convenient health resources where they’re already shopping for groceries and back-to-school items,” said Dr. Cheryl Pegus, executive vice president, Walmart Health & Wellness. “We are especially focused on reaching customers in underserved communities who may have limited options for healthcare in their community, outside our pharmacies. This is a day for the entire family, and we’ll be offering screenings and services for all ages.” More than 4,700 Walmart pharmacies nationwide will host Walmart Wellness Day events from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 24. Health & Fitness Mainers to Gain Access to Comprehensive Dental Care AUGUSTA Mainers in need of dental care, health advocates, and health care providers cheered passage of funding for dental care for 217,000 Maine adults who are covered by Medicaid (MaineCare). Earlier in June, the benefit was passed unanimously as part of LD 996 with support across party lines and was supported by the Governor as part of her budget change package. In 1989, Maine passed an emergency-only dental benefit under MaineCare for Maine people with low incomes, covering only treatment for pain or infection. This marks the first time Maine has ever opted under federal law to offer comprehensive dental care including prevention, treatment, and dentures as part of its Medicaid program. “I think there are people across our state who may cry tears of relief when they hear this news,” said Maine Equal Justice director of health care campaigns and advocacy Kathy Kilrain del Rio. “Maine has finally joined the great majority of states in recognizing that our mouths are a part of our bodies, and that dental care is health care. We are overjoyed that so many Mainers will be able to afford the care they have needed for so long.” This most recent threeyear campaign to expand MaineCare’s dental benefit brought together everyday

Mainers in need of care, dental and medical professionals, advocates, and supporters from all walks under the rally cry, “dental care is health care.” Cheyenna Baldwin of Auburn, a member of a team of directly impacted Mainers who helped lead the campaign, said, “I have kidney disease, and I often get sick and put on antibiotics, which also affects my teeth and gums. Having dental insurance will not only help me fix my teeth, it will also help with my other medical problems, building my self-esteem and selfworth back up, and having less pain so I can do the things I love like being a mother, a recovery coach, and a friend to many.” A 2021 report from the Health Policy Institute found that Maine would save millions in medical care costs and see

$150,000 to Help Combat Opioid Epidemic WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that three organizations in Maine have received a total of $150,000 to reduce opioid, methamphetamine, and prescription drug use among youth. This funding was awarded through the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) Local Drug Crisis Program, legislation co-sponsored by Senators Collins and King to combat the opioid epidemic. “This CARA funding is so especially appreciated and important to the Choose To Be Healthy Coalition. Our partners and staff have done such a great job these past three years more than $21 million annually in economic benefits from covering full dental care for adults with low incomes.

building youth resiliency. But communities need sustained funding to really do the work we need to do. Until all states prioritize and institutionalize mental health care and drug prevention work, coalitions like ours rely on these federal and state grants. Maine is dealing with a mental health crisis among our youth and young adults which has only gotten worse during the pandemic. The CARA funding will allow us to continue our efforts to build youth resiliency and prevent the drug use that often goes along with youth isolation, anxiety and depression,” said Sally Manninen, Director, Choose To Be Healthy Coalition & Community Health. The funding will help reduce opioid, methamphetamine, and/or prescription drug use among youth and change the culture and context regarding acceptability of drug use

among youth. Local grants were awarded as follows: Choose To Be Healthy Coalition in York, Wells, Ogunquit, Kittery, South Berwick, Berwick, North Berwick, Eliot, and Lebanon received $50,000. The funding will be used to educate parents, teachers, and other caring adults on ways to support at-risk youth; provide evidence-based curriculum for youth and parents to prevent substance use; support intervention programs; and collaborate with local treatment and recovery providers to ensure that young people with drug addiction have the resources they need.

~ News ~ Maine Secretary of State Warns of Phishing Campaign via Text Message

AUGUSTA Secretary of State Shenna Bellows is warning Mainers to be suspicious of text messages they may have received from an entity claiming to be the “Secretary of State Drivers License Facility” which asks the recipient to click a

link to complete this verification. The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles does not contact Mainers via text regarding their drivers licenses, said Secretary Bellows. Unfortunately there are bad actors out there attempting to trick well-intentioned people

into exposing their personally identifiable information, or exposing their phones or computers to malware. I urge Mainers to be cautious when receiving any texts or emails like this, and if you have any suspicions about messages claiming to be from

our office to always feel free to call and verify before opening or clicking links. The Secretary of State’s main office can be reached at 207-626-8400 and the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles can be reached at 207-624-9000.

Phishing campaigns via text, known as SMS phishing or smishing, are becoming increasingly common. Mainers should be wary of unexpected emails or texts asking for personal information, or instructions to click on links.

YCCAC Receives 12K Donation! YORK Every year, Williams Realty Partners (WRP) gives tens of thousands of dollars to local charities, scholarship funds, and fundraising events, including donating “Homer the Trolley” for use during special community events to assist their neighbors. WRP has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with York County Community Action Corporation (YCCAC). As fall turns to winter, WRP hosts several coat and winter clothing drives in the towns of York, Kittery and Wells. Hundreds of coats and other winter gear are collected each year and distributed by YCCAC free of charge to those in need throughout York County. Troy Williams, one of the founders of Williams Realty Partners, said “The work that YCCAC does is important to everyone in York County, and we love being able to help them fulfill their mission”. In 2021, WRP expanded their support of YCCAC with a mid-year donation of $12,000.00, earmarked for emergency assistance. Emergency financial assistance programs play a pivotal role in the stabilization of households in distress and are often the first step in building financial stability and promoting

Brick Store Museum Wins 2021 Award of Excellence KENNEBUNK The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) proudly announces that the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk is the recipient of an Award of Excellence for its Century Saturdays Program Series. The AASLH Leadership in History Awards, now in its 76th year, is the most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history. Originally planned as an in-person program but converted to digital during the pandemic, the Brick Store Museum created the Century Saturdays Program series, which premiered once per month from May through October 2020. Each program featured one century per month of local history. Although online, the Museum produced an immersive experience for visitors to get the

chance to see, smell, taste, hear and touch the different centuries that led to the present. The Century Portals (accessed on the Museum’s Digital Learning Center at www.brickstoremuseum.org) included video lecturers; at-home activities; historic recipes; and related social histories like music, gardening, and even included special “take-out” historic meals to share at home. Overall, the Museum’s portals welcomed nearly 13,000 virtual visitors between May and December 2020 – more than its average in-person visitation in a normal year (roughly 8,500). The project was funded by grants from the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine Bicentennial Committee. This year, AASLH is proud to confer thirty-eight national awards honoring people, projects, exhibits, and publications.

The winners represent the best in the field and provide leadership for the future of state and local history. The AASLH awards program was initiated in 1945 to establish and encourage standards of excellence in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of state and local history throughout the United States. The AASLH Leadership in History Awards not only honor significant achievement in the field of state and local history, but also bring public recognition of the opportunities for small and large organizations, institutions, and programs to make contributions in this arena. For more information about the Leadership in History Awards, contact AASLH at 615-320-3203, or go to www. aaslh.org. For more information, go to www.brickstoremuseum.org.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, If a full screen message pops up that says Firefox requires a manual update is this legitimate? It’s happened twice but I haven’t done anything. Thank you, Carolyn

to Edge but I have been trying for two weeks and I can’t figure it out. I’ve tried all the directions on the computer but I still have no luck. Can you please help me? Thank you so very much, Gladys

Dear Carolyn, While I can’t tell you if a pop-up is legitimate without actually seeing it (and sometimes even then I am not sure) I can tell you how to safely check and update Firefox. 1. Open Firefox and click on the three small lines in the upper-right corner just below the X. 2. In the drop-down menu, click on “Help” and then click on “About Firefox”. 3. A small dialog box will open and automatically check to see if there are available updates. If updates are available, it will automatically install them. If Firefox is up to date, the dialog box will say, “Firefox is up to date”. Elizabeth

Dear Gladys, Here are the directions for importing your favorites from Internet Explorer into Edge: 1. Open Edge and click on the three small dots located in the upper- right corner just under the X that you close the window with. 2. In the drop-down menu, click on “Settings”. 3. In the settings menu, you will see a section that says, “Import Favorites and other info”. Click on “Import from another browser”. 4. Under, “Import your info, make sure “Internet Explorer” is selected, then click on the “Import” button. 5. The import will happen automatically and when it is done, you will be able to find your favorites in a folder la-

Dear Computer Lady, I am trying to import my favorites from Internet Explorer

beled, “Imported from Internet Explorer”. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Something is driving me bananas. I have a fairly new Lenovo desktop computer with Windows 10. My email comes through Gmail. All of a sudden when I open something I get this pop-up add that comes up sometimes in the middle of the page, sometimes off to the side, but very annoying. Is this because of Gmail, my computer or what? I will change email if that is the case, even though it is a hassle with everything involved. I really trust your responses. You are very smart! Thanks, Ron – P.S. My pop-up blocker is turned on. Dear Ron, I use Gmail every day, and I don’t get any ads popping up anywhere on the page, so I don’t think it is your Gmail. Based on the large numbers of computers that I clean out for my customers, I would say that you have some sort of advertising malware installed

on your computer. It might have come with your computer, or, more likely it got downloaded with another program that you installed on your computer. I would suggest you try a couple of programs to resolve this problem. One would be Ccleaner at www.ccleaner.com and the other would be Emsisoft at www.emsisoft.com/en/. Both of these programs have a free version that you can try. Once you get rid of this advertising software, you should find that you don’t even need your pop-up blocker any more. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How do I password protect folders in Windows 10? I enjoy reading your newsletters and have combed your website but I cannot figure out how to do this. Thank you for your help, David Dear David, Password protection is not a feature that is included with Windows 10, but there are a couple of work around’s that might help you.

1. You could compress (zip) the folder you want to protect, then set a password for the zipped folder. You would have to have a compression program installed on your computer that includes the ability to set a password on your compressed folder. 2. You could use Windows to encrypt your folder and it’s contents. Once encrypted, the folder can only be opened when you (or anyone else) are logged into your Windows account. There is no password to remember, but if your computer crashes and you can’t log into your account for any reason, the contents of the folder could be lost forever. 3. There are third party programs online that allow you to password protect folders. I have not used any of them so I can’t give you a recommendation. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased.

Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.

The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering.

Crafty Kids

Judith Woodbury will present artwork by Millie LaPerche on Thursday, July 29, 2:30-3:30 p.m. at the library. Millie LaPerche attended the Rhode Island School of Design, majored in Graphic Arts and graduated in 1944. During the 1970’s, she studied with Phil Perkins doing mostly still life’s and portraits in oils. Art was Millie’s passion and she continued to paint into her late 80’s.

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Kennebunk Free Library Bulb Fundraiser

The glowing daffodils on Summer Street’s Land Trust strip and beyond were the result of a community planting of over 3,000 bulbs by the Friends of the Landing last fall. This year the library will follow the initiative of the Friends by planting daffodils around the library and encouraging others to support KFL and purchase daffodils to cheer up their yards and streets. You can order bulbs through the library’s Square store (kennebunfreelibrary.square.site or follow the link from the library website). Yellow daffodils and white narcissus that are 12-18” tall will be five bulbs for $5. All the bulbs are from Fedco, a Mainebased company. Place orders before August 4. Pick up will be at the library on October 20.

~ News ~ Browntail Moth Update STATEWIDE As expected, there have been observations of the first caterpillars pupating at all state monitoring sites with growth of caterpillars advancing this year likely due to a warmer spring which allowed them to emerge and begin feeding earlier. It is a far better investment, and a better choice for the environment, to target controls for the generation that will begin to develop in August. These control measures should include removing and destroying winter webs where possible and management with insecticides if chosen. It is recommend to work with licensed pesticide applicators for the latter approach.

Is summer 2021 expected to be a particularly bad year for browntail moth encounters? Generally speaking, this year will be as bad or worse than last year in terms of potential encounters with browntail moth. Browntail moth populations in Maine have been in an outbreak phase since 2015, and populations last year continued to increase. In particular, the dry spring of 2020 limited disease in the caterpillar stage allowing a bumper crop of moths to disperse in July. Most areas of Maine especially along the coast and inland that have significant host tree populations are at risk. In 2021 overwintering browntail moth

webs were found in every county in Maine. Highest populations, as reflected by mapped damage by aerial survey, are found in Androscoggin, Cumberland, Kennebec, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc and Waldo Counties. What are the most precise ways for people to know

the browntail moth situation in their area? Consult this year’s winter web survey map at www. maine.gov for a general idea of what the brown tail moth population looks like in their areas. However, there is no substitute for inspecting the host trees and shrubs around places they fre-

Since that time, populations of this pest slowly decreased due to natural controls until the 1960s when browntail moth was limited to Cape Cod and a few islands off the Maine coast in Casco Bay. Browntail moth populations are again building in Maine and are found in patches along the coast and up to 60 miles inland from the western Maine border to the New Brunswick border, with the greatest concentrations in midcoastal Maine and the capitol region. The larval stage (caterpillar) of this insect feeds on the foliage of hardwood trees and shrubs including: oak, shadbush, apple, cherry, beach plum, and rugosa rose. Larval feeding causes reduction of growth and occasional mortality of valued trees and shrubs. Treshaun Brown Commits to York County Hawks Track & Field

YORK COUNTY The York County Hawks Track and Field program is proud to announce the commitment of Treshaun Brown of Traip Academy. Treshaun is a standout student-athlete whose speed on the track and flight in the jumping pit will make an immediate impact this year for the Hawks. He is ready to officially start the next chapter of his academic and athletic journey as a York County Hawk. Treshaun is from Kittery, and has a new and recent beginning with track and field. He started his senior year of high school as a sprinter and jumper. He competed in events such as the long jump, 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m relay, and 4x400m relay. This past month, Treshaun helped his team to first place in the 4X100 (45.39.2), placed 2nd in the 200 (23.75), and 2nd in the long jump (21-09). When it came to his choice on colleges, Treshaun was intrigued by York County’s low cost tuition, the new track and field program, and the Criminal Justice pathway that he will pursue. When asked about what he is looking forward to most, Tre-

shaun emphasized, “I’m looking forward to studying something that I’ve always been interested in. I’m also excited to help build the new track program by being one of the first athletes in it. I hope to excel in my academics and get better as a jumper and a sprinter. I’m eager to meet new people and build new relationships with my teammates and classmates.” Treshaun is the first of many student-athletes that are eager to help aid the growth and development of York County’s new athletic department. Not only will he be a part of YCCC’s inaugural athletic seasons, but he will be able to show off his athletic skills while also succeeding academically.

Guy Gagnon Announced as YCCC Golf Coach WELLS As York County Community College prepares for their athletic seasons set to begin in Fall 2021, finding the right coaches to implement these programs was crucial. One of the first official coaches in place is Guy Gagnon. Coach Gagnon was named the head coach for York County’s inaugural, co-ed golf team. Some might even say it was a hole-in-one decision. Gagnon is from Biddeford, where his journey as a golf player and eventually coach began. Since the age of 13, he has competed in numerous local, state, and regional events. From being a junior member at Dutch Elm Golf Course in Arundel, ME, to being a member of Biddeford Saco Country Club, Coach Gagnon has always had a passion for golf. He attended Wentworth Institute of Technology where he received his Associate’s degree in Architectural Engineering, and then went on to get his Bachelor’s degree in Business from University of Maine. He was also on the University of Maine Black Bears golf team and participated in competitive amateur golf in Maine and throughout New England. Gagnon has also won

four club championships. Prior to his role in the YCCC athletic department, Gagnon had previous experience coaching golf at high school level for nine years. Throughout the years, he also gained coaching experience in numerous seasons of youth sports such as softball and soccer. When asked about the most important characteristics of being a coach, Gagnon emphasized three key points, “Consistency of rules and instruction, being able to put yourself in the shoes of the studentathlete in order to understand how best to interact with them, and a sense of humor.” With competition and events set to begin in the fall, Gagnon is eager to start the tee. Specifically, he mentioned the

excitement of starting a new program from scratch and hoping for a good response by current and future student-athletes. YCCC’s new golf team allows their current and prospective students a chance to compete for conference and National championships, while also granting the development of many life-long skills as a student-athlete.
