York Animal Hospital Victim of Cyberattack, Asks for Help YORK On the night of July 5, York Animal Hospital, 88 US Route 1, York, fell victim to a ransomware attack that affected many small businesses worldwide over the holiday weekend. This specific ransomware erased the hospital’s entire server and backup data and left the owners, veterinarians Bill and Barbara Walak (pictured), with nothing except for a few hardcopy paper records and some saved email files. Luckily, no credit card or payment information was compromised. According to various news
articles, cybersecurity experts say the REvil gang, a major Russian-speaking ransomware syndicate, appears to be behind
an attack that happened this past weekend which targeted a software supplier called Kaseya, using its network-management
package as a conduit to spread the ransomware. REvil was the same ransomware provider that the FBI linked to an attack on JBS SA, a major global meat processor, amid the Memorial Day holiday weekend, which suggests the gang aims for holidays since many corporate IT teams aren’t fully staffed at that time. Victims of ransomware attacks are cautioned to never click on any links within any communication from the attackers as they may be weaponized to do more damage to existing systems.
For clients of York Animal Hospital, the Walaks are asking for their help in rebuilding after this malicious event. If you are a current client of York Animal Hospital or have a scheduled appointment, they can not access any of your pets or your information. Please email the clinic at yorkanimal2017@gmail.com with your name, pet’s name, address, phone number, and any previous medical history including recent vaccines for your pet. WELLS In late May, a small group of people gathered in Founders Park in Wells to witness the burial of a time capsule to be unearthed in 2121. Assisting in what was named the Wells 200 Committee Time Capsule Sealing and Burial were three Wells Elementary School fourth grade students who helped plan and gather items for the time traveling cylinder. The ceremony was organized by the Wells 200 Committee, formed in 2019 to plan and coordinate activities to involve Wells in the celebration of the 200th anniversary of Maine becoming a state.

KCI Launches Nationwide Ambassador Program
KENNEBUNKPORT The Kennebunkport Climate Initiative (KCI) announced the launch of a nationwide climate action ambassador program with opportunities for high school, college and adult allies to engage in community building, non-partisan dialogue and action projects in order to protect places from the impacts of climate change.
KCI was formed in early 2020 and originates from a climate change education initiative called the Gulf of Maine Field Studies, a dual enrollment class co-created by three passionate Maine environmental educators at the University of New England, RSU 21 and the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust and in partnership with the Gulf of Maine Institute. In less than
two years, KCI has scaled from Southern Maine to five primary regions across the country and has reached over 500,000 students with climate action content. One of KCI’s first youth ambassador opportunities is an application to receive an expense-paid trip to the United Nations 2021 Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glas-

computer by opening an email attachment, clicking an ad, following a link, or even visiting a website that’s embedded with malware. Once the code is loaded on a computer, it will lock access to the computer itself or data and files stored there. More menacing versions can encrypt files and folders on local drives, attached drives, and even networked computers. Most of the time, you don’t know your computer has been infected. You usually discover it when you can no longer access your data or you see computer messages letting you know about the attack and demanding ransom payments. Tips for Avoiding Ransomware The best way to avoid being exposed to ransomware — or any type of malware — is to be a cautious and conscientious computer user. Keep operating systems, software, and applications current and up to date; Make sure anti-virus and anti-malware solutions are set to automatically update and run regular scans; Back up data regularly and double-check that those
backups were completed; Secure your backups. Make sure they are not connected to the computers and networks they are backing up and Create a continuity plan in case your business or organization is the victim of a ransomware attack. How to Respond and Report The FBI does not support paying a ransom in response to a ransomware attack. Paying a ransom doesn’t guarantee you or your organization will get any data back. It also encourages perpetrators to target more victims and offers an incentive for others to get involved in this type of illegal activity. If you are a victim of ransomware, contact your local FBI field office to request assistance. You can find them listed online at www.fbi.gov/contact-us/fieldoffices.

When he arrived at Riverhurst, he seemed depressed, sad and wondering where he was. But that all changed as he settled in, said Flow. “We got to know each other, and his personality began to shine. Now, everyone at the barn loves my SandyBoy,” she exclaims. A friend encouraged Flow to try writing children’s stories, and eventually she gave in. “I thought SandyBoy had a lot to offer in horse adventures and lessons for children experiencing new situations,” said Flow. The plot is a simple one to which many kids — and adults, too — can relate. SandyBoy is happy at his Mountain Laurel Farm home. But one day, everything changes when he is sold to a new owner and has to adjust to a new home and life.
He is nervous about what it will look like and whether he will make new friends. He chooses to look for the good, learns many lessons, meets new animal friends and his new owner Mia in his new home at Seaview Farm — the fictitious Riverhurst Farm. Flow looked no further than Cape Neddick to find the illustrator, her friend Judy Gaudet. The two met through South Coast Senior College at York County Community College in Wells, where both teach and take classes. They are also members of a close-knit book group. “It has been wonderful fun collaborating with Judy, a great friend who is also a wonderful artist with great ideas and talent,” said Flow. “Even better, she is a local talent which makes reviewing story illustrations in person easier.” Gaudet, a lifelong artist who studied technical and medical il-

KHS Students Partner with Habitat for Humanity
KENNEBUNK As the school year comes to a close seniors at Kennebunk High School (KHS) had the opportunity to participate in a Senior Project. Senior projects allow students to have an opportunity to work closely with a community organization to gain valuable on-the-job experiences in a career they may want to pursue after high school or college. Habitat for Humanity York
County was able to provide a volunteer opportunity for seven seniors at the Kennebunk ReStore. The ReStore is a volunteer driven thrift store that sells used furniture, appliances, hardware, and more at a reduced rate in the community. All the proceeds from the ReStore support Habitat’s affordable housing mission in York County. “I just really love the idea of selling donated items and putting the money directly back into Habitat for Human-

ity. It’s a great idea and I’ve had a lot of fun learning the ropes at the ReStore,” said Leah Wimpfheimer, a senior at KHS. Students had the opportunity to upcycle donated items which were then sold in the ReStore, sort hardware, create a catalog of artwork and complete other projects throughout the ReStore. “Working at the ReStore has allowed me to contribute to the important cause that Habitat for Humanity is in a new way every
time I came to volunteer. The ReStore is a community in itself full of passionate individuals always ready to welcome new volunteers, it’s definitely a great opportunity worth checking out,” said Caitlin Gyimesi, a senior at KHS. Volunteering at the ReStore is a great opportunity for both high school students looking to complete community service hours and gain work experience and for retired adults looking to get involved in the local community. “I have truly enjoyed volunteering at the Kennebunk ReStore. Everything from the dedicated and friendly volunteers and staff to the various project we had to opportunity to help with. The ReStore is such a positive and inspire place,” said Phebe Grant (pictured), a senior at KHS. The ReStore has volunteer opportunities Wednesday-Saturday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. If interested in becoming a volunteer, email program@habitatyorkcounty.org.

School following a Committee brainstorming session to find ways to celebrate the Bicentennial. The planning of the capsule project was conducted by a dozen or so students in LaPlante-Killoran’s STRETCH class in the fall of 2019. For perspective, students researched what Wells was like 200 years ago by visiting the Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit. They collected items for the capsule based on suggestions from their third and fourth grade classmates. Unfortunately, the time capsule project came to a halt in March of 2020 when COVID-19 was declared a pandemic altering life dramatically for millions including school students. It also put a hold on Maine’s Bicentennials celebrations. Yet, now finished and in the ground, the time capsule should provide in a hundred years an interesting an informative glimpse of a historic period through the eyes of school children. Items placed in the 18 x 12-
inch container include a student created book, school t-shirts, two pandemic masks, a stone from Wells Beach and a scrapbook with text, photos, a discovery map of Wells, local restaurant menus, a copy of “Superintendent’s Update”, notices from WES Principal April Noble and Superintendent Jim Daly providing CDC pandemic guidelines, and news articles related to COVID-19 and the 2020 election. Photos in the scrapbook include haunting images of their school’s empty music room with instruments but no students due to the pandemic. Following the ceremony in the park (which can be viewed on YouTube), a round metal plaque was placed to mark the capsule’s location. It reads, “Wells Maine200 Time Capsule-Buried May 26, 2021 to be opened in 100 years”. Also, the capsule’s longitude and latitude positions were recorded in an international database with www. waymarking.com.
Funding for the marker and the capsule came from a grant secured by the Wells 200 Committee including Andrea Kazilionas who played an integral role in
WS
getting the grant process going. The grant came with suggested guidelines to make the capsule project and other activities intergenerational.

This unique outreach program features a new local artist’s collection in Clay Hill Farm’s Veranda Room every 6-8 weeks for the public to view and enjoy. The summer

A public meet and greet reception with the artists is scheduled on Monday, July 12, 1-3 p.m. at Clay Hill Farm. Complimentary light hors d’oeuvres will be provided and all are welcome. Charlene Salvaggio (photo on right) is a local artist who has been painting since childhood.
The collection of paintings presents landscapes and scenes taken from early 1900’s postcards. “My art is inspired by intrinsic play and discovery. KAA Presents An All-Member Show KITTERY Generally, the Kittery Art Association (KAA) picks a theme for a show, and the member artists create or select works that in some way speak to the theme. But for this show, they simply asked for their member’s best work. The “Spotlight Wall” artist for this show is Susan Goodby, described as an imaginative and versatile artist who creates expressive award-winning works in several mediums. She began as an oil painter then discovered collage and worked extensively in that, eventually transforming her torn paper collage into mixed media. Acrylic painting came next and she now happily works in all three mediums. Susan has won numerous awards in acrylic and oil painting, as well as for her work in collage. She regularly exhibits in gallery shows throughout northern New England. This latest all-member show will be on exhibit July 8 August 8, and admission is free. Gallery hours are Thursday 2-5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. KAA is located at 8

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, My question today is about Chrome vs. Edge. I am used to Edge and happy with it, but everyone tells me to change to Chrome, even my favorite concert hall doesn’t allow me anymore to order tickets online because their system works only with Chrome. I run Windows 10 and my email program is www. outlook.com, both just fine with Edge. My security program is Emsisoft. What do I do? Stay with Edge or install Chrome? I am just a run-of-the- mill-user, not doing anything complicated. I would be very thankful to know your opinion. And keep up your wonderful and helpful advice in your column. Helga Dear Helga, There is nothing wrong with using Edge on your computer, but you can also install Chrome if you want and use it for those times when a website won’t work with Edge. My advice would be to keep using Edge. You are comfortable with it, and for the most part it is working for you. If you want to order tickets
from your favorite concert hall, you can always download and install Chrome, but don’t make it your default browser (when you install it, it will ask you if you want to make it your default) Chrome and Edge will work together fine on your system, I have them both installed on my computer, and sometimes I even have them both running at the same time. Hope this helps, Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Hi! I am using HP Window 10 Gmail. I write often with siblings and at times make mistakes in which I go back to the paragraph to correct a word. So I put the arrow behind the word and use the backspace key to delete the word. This works fine but sometimes it deletes the whole paragraph with a brink of an eye and I have to write the whole thing over again. How can I keep this from happening? It’s very irritating! Thanks, Barb Dear Barb, I wish I could watch you when this happens so I could tell you what was causing it, but since I can’t, I can only give you
some suggestions. If this only happens when you are using backspace over longer words, it is probably just a “Feature” of Windows that deletes whole words instead of letters when you hold down the backspace key for a certain amount of time. This makes it go faster when you really do need to backspace over large amounts of text. To fix this, just press and release the backspace key the desired number of times instead of holding it down. You could also be more precise by highlighting only the word you want to delete, then press the delete key on your keyboard to remove it. You can highlight with your mouse, or hold down “Shift” and press the arrow keys to highlight. This way if you highlight more than you wanted to, you can just use the opposite arrow to remove some of the highlighting. Gmail used to have an undo command, but I can’t find it in the newest version of Gmail. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady,
I have Windows 10 and am still able to use Windows Live Mail, which I really like. My question is when filtering out junk mail, I have the option to “add sender to blocked sender list” and/or “add sender’s domain to blocked sender list”. Most of my junk mail comes via www.yahoo.com email addresses. If I choose to add sender’s domain to blocked sender list will that prevent me from getting email from friends who use Yahoo mail? I do have three or four friends who do have Yahoo. I look forward to reading your column and always find very useful information in it. I appreciate your effort to put it out. Thank you! Grace Dear Grace, Yes, if you add the sender’s domain to the blocked sender’s list, it will block all emails from that domain including your friends. You might want to try a test and see if you can add your friends to the allowed senders list, and then block the yahoo domain. I’m pretty sure it will block all the emails from yahoo,
but it is worth a try to see if putting your friends in the allowed senders will override the blocked domain. If it doesn’t work, you will just have to unblock the yahoo domain. Elizabeth
Dear Computer Lady, The latest update to the Windows 10 update will not recognize my Samsung monitor? I have a 24” monitor attached to my HP laptop that has worked just fine till their update. The display settings has changed from the choice of multiple displays to connecting to a wireless Setting. In my search for a solution I came across an article that it may cost extra $ to purchase an upgrade from Windows. Do you know of a way around this problem. FINANCE & CAREER Grads Receive Ogunquit Chamber Scholarships OGUNQUIT The Ogunquit Chamber is pleased to announce the recipients of this year’s Ogunquit Chamber scholarship winners at Wells-Ogunquit High School. Each recipient will receive $1000 to help pay for college tuition. Mallory Aromando (right photo) was an honor roll recipient and student athlete throughout her four years in high school. Many of her community service activities helped share her love of sports with others, from coaching basketball to helping kids learn to surf, and assisting at the Maine Adaptive Program at Sunday River. In addition to helping at her family business, Art & Soul in Ogunquit, Mallory has also worked at The Greenery and Jackie’s Too. Mallory is headed to The New School in New York City, with a potential major of Culture & Media. Kate Pinette (left photo) was also an honor roll recipient and student athlete all four years, earning many additional academic and coach’s awards. Volunteer activities included helping first graders learn to read, coaching youth field hockey, and officiating at youth soccer and basketball games. She has worked the past two years at Joshua’s.
Kate will be attending Babson College this fall, potentially majoring in Business Administration & Management. The winners were selected based on a variety of criteria, with the highest points scored for their creative answer to this year’s Chamber essay question, “If you managed a business in Ogunquit, what would you do to increase the number of visitors coming into your business in autumn, winter & spring?”. Other criteria
included connection to the Ogunquit community, extracurricular and community service activities, and academic achievement. “We congratulate Mallory and Kate for working so hard on so many fronts during their high school years, and wish them well in their future academic endeavors,” commented Alice Pearce, executive director of the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce. “We’re also grateful to Joe DeLois and his team at The
Admiral’s Inn and The Colonial Inn. It was Joe’s vision in 2013 that established the Ogunquit Chamber scholarship program. Following the renovation of The Colonial Inn that year, Joe hosted a grand opening party, with all proceeds donated to the Chamber to start a scholarship program. Joe continued that tradition for the following five years, and those
funds have enabled us to continue to support area high school students in their pursuit of higher education.” The Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce fosters and promotes business, enhances economic and community development, and serves as a catalyst for improving the overall quality of life in the Ogunquit area.

However, because of the non-recyclable nature of polystyrene foam and the costs associated with trash disposal, its use is discouraged. Currently, the best way to “recycle” polystyrene foam is through re-use. When purchasing and using polystyrene foam products, consider if and how they can be re-used. Definitions and exemptions are described in the guidance document found online at www.maine.gov/dep/waste/ recycle/polystyrene-foam.html. For questions, email polystyrenefoam@maine.gov.

STATEWIDE In addition to the plastic bag ban that was reinstated recently on July 1, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection would like to reminder consumers that there is also a ban on polystyrene foam food containers. Expanded polystyrene foam, commonly but inaccurately known by the trade name Styrofoam (which is a material produced for building insulation or craftwork), has been in use since the 1960s. Because of its light weight, impact absorption, insulation qualities, and low price, it has been particularly popular for making disposable packaging and food ware. Of late, polystyrene foam service ware has become a concern for the environment as well as human health and safety. It is one of the top ten contributors to environmental litter. It is not biodegradable, is resistant to photo-oxidization, and is difficult to recycle. Currently in Maine, polystyrene foam is not collected for recycling and must be treated as trash. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Toxicology Program has listed styrene, a chemical found in expanded polystyrene foam, as a reasonably anticipated human carcinogen that can be transferred from expanded polystyrene foam containers into food and beverages that people consume. To protect people and the environment, reduce litter, and keep polystyrene out of the waste stream, in 2019 the Maine legislature passed a statewide ban on certain expanded polystyrene foam products 38 MRSA Chapter 15-A. Health & Fitness $6.9M for Preparedness & Response Against Emerging Crises & Disease WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (Maine DHHS) has received a total of $6,980,956 to support its preparedness and response efforts against public health crises and emerging diseases. The funding was awarded through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “As we continue to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, we must not lose sight of other public health initiatives that protect the health and safety of the community,” said Senators Collins and
$1.9M for Diabetes & Heart Disease Prevention WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the founder and co-chair of the Senate Diabetes Caucus, and Senator Angus King announced that the Maine Department of Health and Human Services has received a total of $1,925,328 to support diabetes and heart disease prevention programs across the state. This funding was awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. “Diabetes and heart disease are lifelong conditions that affect individuals of every age, race, and nationality,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “We welcome this funding, which will help support the Maine Department of Health and Human Services’ efforts to better understand and prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.” Chronic diseases – such as heart disease and diabetes – are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. HHS’ National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion works to reduce the risk factors for chronic diseases, especially for groups affected by health disparities which are differences in health across different geographic, racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups.
King in a joint statement. “We welcome this investment, which will help to ensure that Maine has the resources to prepare for and respond to future public health emergencies and infectious disease outbreaks.” The funding was allocated as follows: Maine DHHS received $5,200,000 through CDC’s Center for Preparedness and Response to prepare and respond to public health emergencies; and Maine DHHS received $1,780,956 through CDC’s Center for Zoonotic, Vector-Borne, and Enteric Diseases to prevent and control emerging diseases. The CDC’s Center for Preparedness and Response prevents, prepares for, and responds to adverse health effects of public health emergencies and disasters.
Bill for Access to HIV Prevention Medication Signed AUGUSTA On June 17, a bill from Sen. Heather Sanborn, DPortland, was signed into law by Gov. Janet Mills. LD 1115, “An Act to Improve Access to HIV Prevention Medications,” will make it easier for Mainers to access lifesaving HIV prevention medication. “As we look to leave the COVID-19 pandemic behind us, let us not forget about the HIV/AIDS epidemic and how far we have come since it first appeared in the United States The CDC’s Center for Zoonotic, Vector-Borne, and Enteric Diseases provides leadership, expertise, and service concerning epidemiological science, bioterrorism preparedness, applied research, disease surveillance, and outbreak response for infectious diseases.
over 40 years ago,” said Sen. Sanborn. “While we don’t yet have a vaccine, we are fortunate to have incredible, lifesaving drugs that can not only treat the virus, but prevent someone from contracting it in the first place. This new law is all about making sure that Mainers don’t need to jump through hoops or spend a fortune when they’re trying to access PrEP and PEP medications and the necessary bloodwork. It will make a real difference in the lives of many people throughout our state, and I thank Gov. Mills for signing the bill into law.” LD 1115 will require stateregulated health insurance providers to cover at least one HIV prevention drug for each method of administration with no out-of-pocket cost. One drug for each administration method also must be available without a prior authorization, which can
slow down the process of a patient getting a medication. The bill also will set up a process where, under certain conditions, a participating pharmacist would be able to dispense and administer up to a 60-day supply of HIV prevention medication to someone without a prescription from a physician. This process will be subject to rules and protocols approved by Maine’s Board of Pharmacy. HIV prevention medication is defined as either PrEP, pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PEP, post-exposure prophylaxis. PrEP is used to prevent an HIV-negative person from contracting HIV before exposure to the virus. PEP is used after an HIV-negative person believes they have been exposed to the virus. When taken as prescribed, PrEP and PEP are highly effective.

Ettlich Named Maine’s Military Youth of the Year STATEWIDE Faith Ettlich from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNS) was named Maine Military Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of America recently for her leadership, service, academic excellence, and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle. Now in its 74th year, the program honors our nation’s most awe-inspiring young people on their path to great futures. As the Maine Military Youth of the Year, Faith receives a $2,500 college scholarship from Boys & Girls Clubs of America, serves as an ambassador for all Military teens in the state, and will go on to contend for the regional Youth of the Year in June and potentially the national title. “I have enjoyed participating in Youth Sponsorship at PNS. Through this program, I have met other local military kids and volunteered on base to support our troops and families,” Faith said about her Youth Sponsorship and BGCA experience. “I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Military Youth of the Year program and look forward to mentoring others through this experience in years to come. I truly love my involvement in the local and military community!” Faith has been an active member with the Youth Sponsorship program at PNS for almost two years. She is a creative and outgoing individual who values connecting with the local community and helping all those she can. She has enjoyed volunteering through the Youth Sponsorship program, participating in basewide support projects, as well as getting to know the other militaryaffiliated teenagers here. Beyond her military youth center involvement, Faith has dedicated her time to other volunteer efforts throughout much of her life. She helped out weekly at the local military library, donated handmade blankets to the Walter
Reed National Military Medical Center’s NICU babies, as well as volunteered at the Smithsonian Institute children’s camps in Washington D.C. Faith has also been extremely involved in Cystic Fibrosis awareness and fundraising through the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, becoming an adult ambassador for the Washington/ Alaska Chapter. In addition to excelling in philanthropy, community involvement, and outreach, Faith excels in the classroom, concert hall, and extra-curricular activities. While maintaining a 3.9 GPA, Faith has been involved in swim team, Tae Kwon Do, and her church’s ministry and programs. Faith’s musical
ability is an area where she shines; Faith will be attending Gordon College next fall where she will be part of the Honors Program, majoring in Piano Performance. “We are incredibly proud of Faith and all the Youth of the Year nominees,” said Jim Clark, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. “Being named Youth of the Year is a lifelong honor. As the Maine Military Youth of the Year, Faith will serve as a spokesperson for kids and teens across the state who face the many unique challenges associated with military life.” This summer, Faith will compete for the title of Northeast Region Military Youth of the Year and an additional $20,000 college scholarship. Five regional winners will advance to the virtual National Youth of the Year event in October 2021 to compete for the title of National Military Youth of the Year. The final stage of the journey, National Youth of the Year, presents the opportunity to receive an additional scholarship of $50,000 and a brand-new Toyota Corolla.
Preservation Grant Recipients For 2021 STATEWIDE Maine Preservation, partnering for a second year with The 1772 Foundation, awarded historic preservation one-forone matching grants totaling $100,000 to eighteen private nonprofit organizations maintaining historic buildings in Maine. The grants ranged in amount from $2,000 to the grant maximum of $10,000, with one organization receiving the latter amount. Grants were provided for exterior work: painting; surface restoration; fire/security systems; repairs to/restoration of chimneys, porches, roofs, and windows; repairs to foundations and sills; and masonry repoint-
ing. Projects were evaluated by Maine Preservation field services staff, who also will manage the grants. Each grantee was required to have matching funds for its project. Maine Preservation Executive Director Greg Paxton said, “Maine Preservation is honored to partner with The 1772 Foundation to deliver support to nonprofit organizations across Maine as they seek to update and preserve their historic buildings, which are critical cultural resources for their communities and the state. The 1772 Foundation funds supplement the limited in-state grant funding currently available to support preservation efforts in

~ Pets & News ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS We’re looking for a great home for a six month old kitten named Jolie. This lovely little kitty has a soft grey striped coat and little white boots. She sports a bold white bib on her chest and a splash of white on her cute little face that makes her look like a pixie. This bright, happy young kitty is so ready for her forever home. So, lets find her fine one! Jolie loves to be held and cuddled, and will be a wonderful new family member. She’s slightly vocal when she wants your attention, which makes her even more adorable. A family with older, animal-loving children might be a good match. Since she’s so young and active, you should have the time to play with her.

With her winning personality and good health, she will easily bond with you and your family. All you need to add is love and a safe home. Please call Leonore at 207-985-3227 or the shelter at 207-646-1611 for more info. We are taking in many kitties who have lost their homes, either due to pet restrictions in housing, or their owner passing away. Strays are also being found with kittens at their sides. Please keep your eyes open around wood piles, sheds and under houses for signs of mother cats and kittens in need of rescue.

Please be compassionate. Set out food and water if you see signs of homeless kitties. Call your local No-Kill shelter for help and advice. With the summer heat arriving, please make sure your window A/C vents are securely closed. Many kitties find the sliding window vents a curiosity, and when they play with them they discover they can open them and get outside for a romp in the wild outdoors. Cats love to sunbathe and can lean against window screens, only to find themselves suddenly outside and exposed to the threats of a dangerous world. Just a few minutes checking your A/C’s side vents and window screens could save you so much heartache and worry. Our Thrift/Vintage/Antique shop at 1784 Post Road is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. We accept donations on Saturdays from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Please donate your better items to our store. Boomer is one of the most laid back and mellow cats we have ever known. He’s great with other cats and kids; we aren’t sure about dogs. And did you notice those squishy, huge double paws? He makes great biscuits! If you are interested in adopting Boomer or any of our other cats, please call 207-4902855 or email mycatrescue@ icloud.com. Emma’s Angels NORTH BERWICK Meet adorable Hank! He is a four-year-old Hound/Puggle mix. He was surrendered to us and lived the last few months basically in a crate. No more! He would love to go to camp or walk on many trails. He is up to date on shots and neutered. Just a sweet boy. He is about 45 lbs. Hank would do well in a cat free home and kids over age five. If you would like to meet Hank call 207-676-5599. Emma’s Angels Rescue is an all volunteer, foster based rescue in North Berwick Maine. Needed at this time: Kitty litter! We have many cats that we helped rescue from the south. We will take any type but do use Cedarific. It can be left in our drop box at 30 Meeting House Road, North Berwick. Thanks in advance!

Paul also leaves behind one niece, five nephews, one grandniece, as well as his lifelong sidekicks, Kevin Guthrie, Marc Davis-Taylor, and Virginia “Ginger” McCann, and many friends, each of whom, he made feel like a best friend. Paul had an incredibly generous spirit and a love for animals. He adopted rescue dogs, including his beloved Irie. He was an avid boater since a child with his family on Lake George and came to be an amazing Captain on the sea. He often traveled on his boat on the west coast of Florida to the Florida Keys, the Caribbean, and the Virgin Islands, always bringing friends along for his adventures. Paul was a loving son to the point of moving to Maine and NH to provide live--n care for his father’s final years of life. Paul was loved by many, will be missed greatly, and never forgotten. “Hope you’re with Dad, Mom, and Irie, on a heavenly body of water with Jimmy Buffet and Neal Diamond playing.”

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

...KNIGHT from page 22 with the class of 1967. Rick served as a marine engineer in the Merchant Marine, traveling the world nine times. This period, as well as his time at Maine Maritime Academy, provided ample material for many interesting stories, which he loved to tell to his friends and family. Fishing out of Perkins Cove in Ogunquit for over forty years, Rick first had a dragger, the “Barbara Helen”, and later his lobster boat, the “Michelle D”. Rick loved being on the water, and deeply treasured the friendships and brotherhood that he had with the other fishermen in the cove. A natural-born inventor, Rick was always thinking of ways to solve problems or to make something work better. Through his ingenuity and hard work, he was awarded three United States patents and a Canadian patent. This inventive and entrepreneurial spirit shone through in all parts of Rick’s life, and he was the type to truly make things happen.
~ Obituaries & News ~ Rick also enjoyed cutting firewood and maintaining the fields with his tractor. He loved his family dearly, and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with them, especially his grandchildren, whom he enjoyed giving nicknames, such as “Aldie” (Alden) and “Quad” (Richard S. Knight IV). Always ready for a good conversation or story, Rick had an incredible wealth of historical knowledge of the area in which he grew up and that he loved, and the people and events that shaped it. His genuine and kind nature made him a delight to talk to and to know. Rick is survived by his wife, Michelle, son Richard S. Knight III, daughter-in-law Kristina, and two grandsons Richard and Noah, as well as son John Weare Knight, daughter-in-law Tessa, and grandchildren Alden and Hazel. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Maine Lobsterman’s Association are greatly appreciated. A Celebration of Life was held Monday, July 5 at Knight’s Quilt Shop. Visit www.lucaseatonfuneralhome.com for online condolences.

Beech Leaf Disease Added to Invasive Species List AUGUSTA The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry announced an addition to the state’s invasive species list. Beech leaf disease, leading to the decline and mortality of beech trees from Ohio to Southern New England, has arrived in Maine’s forest. The disease was confirmed in leaf samples from a forest in Lincolnville (Waldo County) by Dr. Robert Marra of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. The diseased
trees were brought to the attention of the Maine Forest Service’ (MFS) Pathologist by the landowners, who pay attention to changes in their frequent walks through their forest. Symptoms of the disease have since been seen in towns from Belfast to Rockport and inland to Searsmont and Hope. The MFS is asking for the public’s help in identifying additional areas impacted by beech leaf disease. If you suspect you have found affected leaves
submit photos using the MFS tree ailment form, email foresthealth@maine.gov, or call 207287-2431. Photos should include a clear shot of the underside of an affected leaf or leaves. However, please report concerns even if those photos cannot be provided. Symptoms of beech leaf disease include: Dark bands form between the veins of leaves; Leaves become curled, deformed, and shriveled; Trees develop a thin canopy. Beech leaf disease was first
Traip Academy Names Lombardi Student of the Year KITTERY Traip Academy is proud to announce that Traip Senior Mary Lombardi has been named the Sanford Regional Technical Center Student of the Year. During her time at SRTC, she has achieved her Associates Certification in SolidWORKS and certification in CAM-F, meeting industry standards. In addition, Mary has earned college credit for dual enrollment in SRTC and York County Community College. Mary’s teacher at SRTC, Russell Clark said, “Mary is exceptionally smart and talented. She uses every second of class time working on the most difficult 3D Engineering problems I can offer. Then she will use our most advanced textbooks to push herself harder.” In Mary’s words, “My enrollment in EAD opened my eyes to my true passion in engineering and has allowed me to focus on this passion while still in high school.” Mr. Clark added: On her phone is a special project that no student has been able to solve in my eight years at SRTC. It’s a huge project from a set of detailed blueprints that I personally purchased when I took this job. It’s an older Aston Martin car she created using our advanced engineering software and displayed using a special phone App. I thought it would be fun to see if a high school student
could do it. It’s very complicated using some extremely advanced techniques. She did it! Stunning work.” At Traip, Mary is Co-Valedictorian of the Class of 2021, a member of Student Council, a founding member of Bring Change to Mind (a group designed to educate others about mental health), a four-year member of the Varsity Football Team, a member of the Civil Rights Team and Team Captain of the Traip FIRST Robotics Team. Mary used her free time during virtual schooling last spring to make over 200 reusable masks for the community. John Drisko, Principal of Traip Academy remarked, “This is indeed an honor for Mary. Although, given Mary’s exceptional work ethic at Traip for four years, it is easy to see why she was named Student of the Year at Sanford Regional Technical Center.”

At this time, there are no proven methods for management.

Webhannet Golf Club Sponsors Pro-Am Match for Charity
Joe Alvarez and Justin Irish (former and reigning club champions) face off against Director of Golf Kirk Kimball and Head Golf Professional Eric Higgins in Pro-Am match Sunday, July 18 to benefit two Maine charities. Open to the public.
KENNEBUNK An 18-hole competition on Sunday, July 18, between Webhannet Golf Club professionals Kirk Kimball and Eric Higgins against club champions Joe Alvarez and Justin Irish, is expected to be a nail-biter. But the real winners that day will be Community Harvest and Make-A-Wish Maine which the participants have named as their charitable beneficiaries. The match will be played at Webhannet Golf Club, Kennebunk Beach. Tee-off is at noon and “everyone in the area is invited,” Director of Golf Kimball says. “You don’t have to be a member to come and watch and
there’s no admission fee.” “Our match will benefit two local charities, with 60% going to the winners’ charities and 40% to the runners-up charities,” Kimball says. “But it’s also going to be reminiscent of a golf match at Webhannet 92 years ago when professional Walter Hagen, who had 11 tour victories, teamed with noted player Horton Smith against amateurs Fred Leake and Knox Young. The course record of 69 at Webhannet was broken that day by Hagen, Smith and Leake. And, 500 spectators lined the fairways to cheer on the players.” That match went all the way to the 18th hole when Leake

Smith had a chance for a 66, and victory, by sinking a somewhat shorter putt, but the ball rimmed the cup and stayed out. The match ended in a tie. Kimball and Higgins have chosen Community Harvest as their charitable beneficiary. Higgins says, “They help more than 1000 neighbors throughout the area, whether it’s serving hot meals, providing fuel assistance during the winter or recognizing high school seniors who have
York Women’s Golf League Results YORK The 2021 ten-week season kicked off Monday, June 7 with 48 women fielding six teams. A new format of match play for positions 1-4 and an equitable quota point system for positions 5-8 provides the right balance of competition and fun for all levels of golf.
York Women’s Golf League team captains this year are Jennifer Jackson, Peggy Todd, Sandy Petrovich, Debbie Erikson, Liz Nolan and Alison Fogel. After three weeks of play as of June 21, two teams are tied for first place with nine points each, headed by Captains Alison Fogel and Peggy Todd. Liz Nolan’s team is in second place with 8 1/2 points. The six teams are all very close. Overall, there are many new members and with the new format, this year’s league is very enjoyable and the golf course is both challenging and beautiful. ...COMPUTERS from page 13
given back to their community.” Amateurs Alvarez and Irish (teeing off with no strokes, as will the pros) are playing for Make-A-Wish Maine, which creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. The Match begins at noon, July 18, at Webhannet Golf Club, 26 Golf Club Drive, Kennebunk Beach. No admission fee; public is welcome.
that you didn’t spend money purchasing an upgrade from Windows, because I am 99% sure there is no such thing and therefore probably a scam. Instead, I would go to the Samsung website and see if they have provided any upgraded drivers to go along with the latest Windows updates. Those would be provided to owners free of charge.
