WellS – One of the sure signs that the summer season is on its way in Wells is the Summer Solstice Craft Show, now in its 31st year. This year’s shows will be held Saturday and Sunday, July 6 and 7, at the Wells Elementary School on Route 109 (276 Sanford Road), Wells, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This juried show is known for the quality and variety of crafts and art that is offered. About 70 crafters and artists attend, displaying, demonstrating and offering their goods for sale inside the building and out on the brick courtyard.
Traditional, contemporary and country crafts are represented, among them stained glass, jewelry, pottery, soaps, candles, wood accessories, fiber arts, graphics, photography and handcrafted specialty foods. Many of the artists and crafters in the shows use materials and create goods that are either of Maine or reflect Maine or New England. Among the artisans at the July 6 and 7 show are Jan Dunsford of Washington, Maine. Her unique, one-of-a-kind jewelry is more like a piece of art, according to some enthusiasts. Another unique artisan is Susan Barnes,
who creates art dolls. Maine potters Tracy and Eric Bradford will display their functional pottery, and local seamstress Dianne Karns will have new work to show. Photographer David Sullivan of Ogunquit is also on this year’s roster. The craft show also includes live music by Carolyn Currie, guitarist and singer. Lunch is available from The Tourist Trap in Wells. The Summer Solstice Craft Show is held rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Parking and admission are free.

group based in New Hampshire, whose mission it is to honor, educate and preserve the memory of sailors and marines who fought to uphold the Union during the Civil War. The unit’s displays consist of original and quality reproductions of uniforms, weapons and accoutrements that tell the story of the common sailor’s experience during the War Be-
tween the States. Through accurate interpretation in uniforms, equipment and deportment, these living history representatives strive to instill an understanding of and answer questions about life at sea. The Kittery Historical and Naval Museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

SaNFOrd – It may be summer, but Biddeford Walmart employee Marietta McNeil is thinking ahead to winter by donating 20 hand-knitted hats to Waban’s Children’s Programs. In addition to the colorful hats, McNeil has augmented her donation by applying to Walmart’s “Volunteerism Always Pays” (VAP) Program and earning grant money for the hours she spent
