Vetre lost his battle with lung cancer in July of 2019. His wife, Jacklyn Belmonte, worked with Town Manager Larissa Crockett, current Fire Chief Mark Dupuis, and Douglas Bibber of Bibber Memorial Chapel and Bibber Family Monuments, to create and install the memorial, which includes a portrait of Vetre, plaque describing his service, and custom-made helmet shield similar to one Vetre had made for himself. The memorial was installed at the Wells Fire Station this spring. A ceremony was planned but then canceled due to COVID-19 precautions. Vetre’s wife said, “I am grateful to Mr. Bibber, Chief Dupuis, and Ms. Crockett, for their knowledge, guidance, and assistance in the memorial’s

appointment becomes effective July 1. Burnell has over twelve years of experience working in public education, the last three of which serving as a grade three teacher at Wells Elementary School. Burnell holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Merrimack College and is completing a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership through Endicott College and the Maine Educators Consortium. In addition to his role as a classroom teacher, Burnell has completed an administrative internship with Wells Elementary School Principal April Noble and with Wells Junior High School Principal Josh Gould.

“I am just thrilled to be able to have the opportunity to work here at Wells Junior High School,” said Burnell when asked for a comment. “I have been fortunate to teach at the elementary school having gone to these schools myself. I think this is a fantastic opportunity to give back to the community. These schools have given me so much throughout the course of my life (and so) I appreciate the opportunity to have the chance to impact kids and to impact our community. I am really thankful for that.” Principal Gould noted that “Kyle Burnell brings experience as an outstanding classroom teacher and a strong analytical mind to Wells Junior High School. He loves his students

and exudes Warrior Pride!” Principal Gould remarked that Burnell’s experience with special education, his strong ability to elevate student behavior and performance, and his deep understanding of effective practices in teaching and learning will help move Wells Junior High School forward.

One committee member that interviewed Burnell remarked, “He is a thoughtful and caring individual with a passion for helping students learn.” Another member of the interview committee stated, “Mr. Burnell will be a wonderful addition to our staff at WJHS! He is an excellent communicator and very student-centered.” Two committees were formed for the purpose of selecting the Assistant Principal at Wells Junior High School. Committee membership included parents, a School Committee member, Wells Junior High School teachers, Wells Junior High School support staff, and Principal Gould. The screening committee met on April 26 and selected three candidates from a pool of highly qualified applicants. Following the selection of candidates, an interview committee met with candidates on April 29 before unanimously forwarding the name of Kyle Burnell. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Museum Premiers Veterans Interview Series KENNEBUNK On Sunday, July 4, The Brick Store Museum, 117 Main Street, Kennebunk will premiere The Veterans’ Project online at www. brickstoremuseum.org. The project features recent oral history recordings of local veterans who served in a variety of eras between the 1960s and as recently as 2018, and now live in and around Kennebunk. The public is welcome to visit the website to hear the re-

cordings, exploring the experiences and lives of local veterans who served in the Navy, Army, Coast Guard, Air Force and Marines. As this project premieres at brickstoremuseum.org/education/archives/oralhistory with its first dozen interviews recorded during the spring of 2021, it is by no means complete. Local veterans and their families are encouraged to contact the Brick Store Museum at 207-985-4802

or contact the project’s manager, Cynthia Walker, at cwalker@ brickstoremuseum.org, if they are interested in recording their stories. Recordings on the Museum’s Veterans’ History Project site can be accessed in a variety of ways, including downloading the recordings to listen from your smartphone. “We are incredibly thankful to the veterans who have given so much, and above that answered

our ask to be interviewed,” Cynthia Walker, Museum Director said. “It can be really hard to be interviewed about your own life,

Emma’s Angels NORTH BERWICK Let us introduce you to two beauties this week! Dahlia is a two-year-old Tortie girl and Jetta is a seven-month-old Lab/Terrier mix. Both are from Louisiana. Dahlia and Jetta are up to date on their vaccinations and spayed. Dahlia gets along with other cats and Jetta gets along with everyone she sees! To meet them, call 207-676-5599. Emma’s Angels Rescue is an all-volunteer, fosterbased rescue and we need kitty litter! We use either Cedarific or “Yesterday’s News. It can be left at at 30 Meeting House Road, North Berwick, and thank you!

WELLS With the best teachers, you don’t even know you’re being taught. That’s what cats do. They teach us. Some people are open to learning from them, and some folks learn, but forget. When that happens, another cat comes along to teach us again. Valentino was one of the best teachers we’ve had for a long time. Those of us who have been with Safe Haven for a long time have learned from the best and toughest cats we’ve rescued. With our no-kill mission and our firm belief that every cat is worth saving, and that feral cats can indeed be socialized and become happy family members, we broke through limitations and misconceptions that other shelters and rescues declared impossible.

And every now and then, divine intervention or Mother Nature sends us a great teacher. And this time our teacher was Valentino. He arrived after being trapped, feral and nasty. Some volunteers were so afraid, they thought that perhaps he should be returned to his wild life. We’ve never returned a cat to the wild and we never will. We always give them time to teach us. Time and love, time and love. And in a short time, I got some pretty remarkable progress reports about Valentino. He was no longer lunging at volunteers like a mountain lion. He wasn’t hissing, he was just teaching... See HAVEN page 16...

Safety Tips for Outdoor Activities including Fireworks STATEWIDE With summer officially here and COVID-19 restrictions loosening around the country, many people will look to grilling, cookouts, and other outdoor gatherings, including fireworks displays, to enjoy the warm weather. As the Fourth of July approaches, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA - www.nfpa.org) is providing important reminders and guidelines for safely enjoying these activities. Make sure your gas grill is working properly. Leaks or breaks are primarily a problem with gas grills. Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year. If your grill has a gas leak detected by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off both the gas tank and the grill. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and do not move it. If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least five minutes before re-lighting it. Make sure to closely monitor food cooking on the grill. Turn the grill off promptly when you’re done cooking, and let it cool completely before returning it to its original location. For campfires and fire pits, always have a hose, bucket of water, or shovel and dirt or sand nearby, and make sure the fire is completely out before going to sleep or leaving the area. Keep

equipment a safe distance from things that can burn. Place your grill well away (at least three feet) from anything that can burn, including deck railings and overhanging branches; also keep them out from under eaves. Keep portable grills a safe distance from lawn games, play areas and foot traffic. Keep children and pets well away from any type of equipment in use. Use fuel and fire starters properly. If you use a starter fluid to ignite charcoals, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources. Never use gasoline or other flammable or combustible liquids on firepits, chimineas, or campfires. For electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire, make sure the extension See SAFETY page 12...

What to Know When Planning a Trip With coronavirus vaccinations ramping up, many people are looking forward to traveling again. This may mean planning a summer vacation or even a spring break trip. But the pandemic isn’t over yet, and there are still multiple risks associated

with traveling. The Better Business Bureau recommends the following tips to minimize the risks. Understand the risks and delay plans if possible. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) points out that “COVID-19 cases, hospitaliza-

tions, and deaths are extremely high across the United States.” Since travel increases your risk of infection, CDC recommends delaying unnecessary travel plans to protect yourself and others from COVID-19. In addition, if anyone in your household or at your travel destination is at high risk of infection, everyone in the household should act as if they, themselves are at increased risk of infection. Research travel restrictions. Travel restrictions vary by state and country and are constantly changing. Visit the U.S. State Department’s “Know Before You Go” page and the CDC Travel Planner to get up-to-date information on COVID-related travel restrictions as you plan your trip and as your travel dates approach. Take precautions before and after your trip. During the 14 days leading up to your trip, avoid situations that could put you at risk for infection, such as attending large group events or using public transportation, recommends the CDC. Then, get tested with a viral test 1-3 days before you travel and keep a copy of your negative test results with you. After your trip, get tested again 3-5 days after arriving home and make plans to self-quarantine for seven days after travel, regardless of your test results. The CDC also advises getting vaccinated, if eligible, and waiting until two weeks after your final vaccination dose to travel. Pack a “pandemic bag.” Condé Nast Traveler recommends

stocking up on pandemic essentials before you head out. Pack a bag with COVID-19 prevention staples including “hand sanitizer, face masks, disinfecting wipes, health insurance cards, a thermometer, latex gloves (for one-time use in public spaces), and hand soap.” If you’ll be on the road for extended periods of time, it’s a good idea to bring drinks and snacks along too so as to avoid unnecessary stops in public places. Make flexible travel plans. Flexibility is key during the pandemic. Be willing to pay extra for fully refundable flights, car rentals, and accommodations. Your plans may change last-minute due to an unexpected lockdown or infection. Understand what travel insurance covers. Purchasing travel insurance is wise, but it may not cover every situation. Read the fine print or work with a travel agent to understand how your policy works. Most travel insurance will cover medical expenses if you get sick during your trip or the cost of your trip if you must cancel due to illness, but they may not cover the cost of your trip if you need to cancel because a state or city goes into lockdown unexpectedly. Opt for a road trip instead of a flying. Waiting in security lines and sitting on crowded flights will increase your risk of infection. If you, or anyone you’ll be in contact with, is in a high-risk group, it’s best to drive. Road travel carries risks too, but it’s much easier to mitigate them from within a smaller space

you and your family control. Book accommodations that make it easy to follow COVID19 guidelines. Find out what precautions and sanitary measures a hotel is taking in between guests. Inquire about shared facilities, such as gyms, pools, spas and restaurants. In many cases, such facilities could be shut down until further notice. Make sure you are comfortable with the precautions any hotel or vacation rental has in place ahead of time. Wear a mask and social distance. To protect yourself and your family, CDC advises travelers to wear a mask, avoid crowded areas and stay at least six feet away from others whenever you are in a public space. Enjoy the great outdoors. Hiking and camping at state and national parks are a great way to enjoy warmer weather since they don’t involve sharing indoor spaces with others. ...SAFETY from page 11 cord you are using is designed for outdoor use. For any type of outdoor fire that can’t be quickly and effectively extinguished, call the fire department immediately for assistance. Only attend public fireworks displays. If you are planning on making fireworks part of your Fourth of July celebration, NFPA strongly recommends attending these public shows rather than using consumer fireworks, which can cause serious injury and damage due to their unpredictability. An estimated 19,500 fires in the US were started by fireworks in 2018, including 1,900 structure fires, 500 vehicle fires, and 17,100 outside and other fires. These fires caused five deaths and 46 injuries to civilians and $105 million in property damage. More than onequarter (28%) of fireworks fires from 2014-18 occurred on the Fourth of July. Approximately half (49%) of all fires reported on the Fourth of July are caused by fireworks. In 2020, an estimated 15,600 people were seen for fireworks-related injuries at hospital emergency departments, according to data collected by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Jacquelyn R. Brooks, 87 SOUTH BERWICK – Jacquelyn R. Brooks, lovingly known as Jackie, left her family and friends Friday, June 25, 2021. Born August 2, 1933 in Dracut, MA, to Daniel and Louise(Sturgeon) Hilliard, she was in the middle of a crew of seven siblings. She also had a half-sister, Phyllis Weberson. Her family moved to South Berwick from Lowell, MA, in her highschool years. That is where she would meet the love of her life and best friend, Vernon ‘Buddy’ Brooks. They enjoyed 62 years of a happy marriage doting on their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Family is truly what they lived for! Jackie was an extremely hard worker who spent her career at various area shoe factories. She completed her working years as a valued foreman at Duchess Footwear right here in her hometown of South Berwick. She made numerous friends during her time at the factory and throughout her life whom she remained in close contact with after she retired. Her generosity and caring were limitless. She was renowned for helping others, even those she didn’t know. Jackie had an extreme sense of humor and was known for her personal wisecracks such

as “Have bag – will travel!”, “I’ve been kicked out of better places!”, “Don’t threaten me with a good time!”, and others not fit to print. Many times, Buddy, shaking his head, would be heard saying, “Oh Jackie!” In her earlier years, she could be quite the mischief maker with any random sibling brave enough on any given day to accompany her. One incident in particular involved her remaining sibling Nancy Pebbles and husband Tom at the former Pease A.F.B. Enough said here to protect the not so innocent! (Smile) Even though she was 99% a lawabiding citizen she was known to on occasion to get behind the wheel of some unsuspecting vehicle for reasons justified only by her. Fortunately, these happenings were rare and all survived unscathed. Our beloved girl was a shopa-holic and was always dressed to the nines! This could be frustrating when we would be on a tight schedule only to hear, “I just need to change one more time.” Any female in the family could call in a moment’s notice requesting just the right garment or accessory and be guaranteed it would be in Jackie’s expansive closet. She loved special holidays and family traditions that spanned the years such as Friday night hot dog suppers. This particular ritual was so impactful it has been carried on by her eldest daughter Marcia with Sunday night suppers at her home that have spanned many years and continue to this day! No one could compete with her often requested macaroni and cheese, fried haddock, and pepper steak subs. Although Jackie is no longer physically present, she has left a legacy of devotion, kindness, integrity, humor and

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

love of family that will be carried forward by those fortunate to call her mom, sister, nana, great-nana, and friend! She is survived by two daughters, Marcia Syvinski of South Berwick and Dawn Brownell; five cherished grandchildren, Paula Renaud (Billy Renaud) of South Berwick, Jessica Morley (Christopher Morley) of Houlton, Valerie Currier (Chad Currier) of Berwick, Daniel and Jarrod Brownell; eight greatgrandchildren, Johnathon, Rebecca and Kayla Renaud, Phillip, William, Jacquelyn (her namesake) and Thomas Morley, and Blake Currier; sister Nancy Pebbles with husband Tom of Anderson, S.C. She is predeceased by her loving husband Buddy; cherished son-in-law Michael Syvinski; brothers, Daniel, Robert, James, and Gordon Hilliard; sisters, Barbara Hilliard Smith and Julia Hilliard Weare. missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

...HOWLETT from page 13 born. She then stayed at home raising her family. She stayed very active with her daughters, becoming a Brownie Girl Scout leader and Sunday school teacher. Sandra was a very loving, caring person. While her daughters were in school, she worked for a home health agency as a member of the Crisis Intervention Team. As her grandchildren began arriving she became a “babysitting grandmother”, a role she was very proud of and

enjoyed. Later in life, she opened her home to her elderly parents and became their caretaker for 12 years. Her most difficult, but rewarding role, came when her husband, George Howlett, whom she married August 17, 1963, was diagnosed with cancer. She was his caretaker until he lost his battle in February 2011. Sandra enjoyed spending her time doing a wide range of activities including reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, calligraphy, crocheting, and collecting. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family

and friends. Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Hazel Jennings; husband of 47 years, George Howlett; and brother Timothy Jennings. She is lovingly survived and missed by her three daughters, Tammy Crooks with husband David of Allenstown, NH, Suzan Kent with husband Raymond of Wells, and Leanne Sullivan with husband John of Chester, NH; three sisters, Karen Simpson with husband Barry of Summerfield, FL, Kathy Drown with husband Donnie of Kennebunk,

and Debbie Burke with husband Gary of Wilton; grandchildren, David “DJ”, Jason, Breanna, Kaleigh, Nick, Bryan, Samantha, Olivia, and Mattie; great-grandchildren, Ellie and Luca; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial service followed by a celebration of Sandra’s life was held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 1 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. Interment will take place at a later date at Southern Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery where she will be laid to

rest next to her husband. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sandra’s name to Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter at www.alz. org/maine or Beacon Hospice at www.amedisys.com. To share a memory or leave a message of condolence, please visit Sandra’s Book of Memories Page at www.bibberfuneral. com. ...HAVEN from page 8 Valentino was giving everyone a chance to remember that feral cats just need extra time to lose their fear. He taught them that trust comes as a mutual gift. Our devoted and wonderful volunteers were giving him the space, the time, the privacy, the dignity, to chill out and relax. Today Valentino greeted a volunteer at the door of his room, and then happily frolicked around the volunteer, excited to get their attention. He has shown everyone he’s ready for a real home. We know from experience that the rest of his lesson will be learned in his permanent home. Both Valentino and the person or family who adopts him will teach each other to be patient and respectful. When he feels they are trustworthy, he will become a total love bug. So Teacher Valentino is ready to be adopted by a catexperienced family with no dogs (friendly cats are fine) and preferably no young children. He has taught those who were lucky to have met him that feral cats can definitely be socialized, and that all cats deserve to live happily ever after in a home with appreciative, respectful, deserving people who are willing to take some life lessons from a cat. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I have recently had issues with my PC in being able to view certain programs or to operate them at all. I use Windows 10. I suspect this is the culprit. I have been using Turbotax for years. My 2020 version worked at first then stopped allowing me to access it at all. Even the Turbotax folks couldn’t help me. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling but without success. Any idea why this is happening and how I can fix it? Turbotax pointed the finger at Windows 10. I don’t have proof, but I suspect they are right. Help! Thank you, Dave Dear Dave, While I can’t tell you exactly what is wrong without actually running some diagnostics on the computer, I did want to tell you not to fall for the blame game. Windows 10 has been around for a while now, and in my experience it is a nice, solid operating system. When you are a phone tech support person for a company, and everything you try to fix the problem doesn’t work, what is the easiest thing to do? Blame it on someone else’s product! I sometimes talk to customers after they have called multiple companies, and

each one points the finger at the next. The problem you describe could be the result of hard drive problems, or it could be that your windows installation has become corrupt and you might need to re-install. But even if it is a corrupt operating system, remember that this can happen with any operating system, not just Windows 10. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Hi, I’m new at saving music on my iPad and I have somehow downloaded three full albums When I meant to just choose a few songs. Does this affect my storage, or cost me battery time? If not then I don’t want to delete them. Thanks, Pat Dear Pat, The albums will take up more space on your iPad than a few songs, so, yes it will affect your storage. However, having more songs on your iPad will not make the battery wear out any faster. So, if you currently have plenty of storage space, keep them on your iPad, but when the time comes that you are getting short on space, then you can delete the songs you don’t want on there. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady,

I am using Mozilla Thunderbird on my new laptop. All new emails show at the bottom of the page. Is there a way to reverse that so that the new ones are at the top? Thank you for your help, Wendy

consumed leaving me little room for other programs. Is there some way I can load Dropbox on the D drive so that I can continue syncing files between my other computers? Thank you for your assistance in this matter, Toby

Dear Wendy, For sorting your emails in Thunderbird, you can change the sort order by clicking right on the word, “Date” at the top of the column. You will notice there is a small triangle to the right of the word, “Date” and by clicking, you change the direction the triangle is pointing in. This toggles the sort order every time you click from oldest first to newest first and back again. Elizabeth.

Dear Toby, According to the Dropbox help website, you can indeed move your Dropbox folder to your D: drive. Here is how: First, you need to be using the desktop version of Dropbox. It sounds like you have already done this step, but if you have not, go to dropbox.com/downloading to download, then install the program. Once you have Dropbox downloaded and installed, you will find an icon for it in the system tray (the right-hand end of the taskbar). Click on the taskbar icon for dropbox, and click

Dear Computer Lady, Thank you for all of your information over the past years. I have recently purchased a new computer and have run into a problem with using a program that I love but is giving me fits with the new device. The new computer has a solid state hard dive (C) as well as a mechanical hard drive (D) with the solid state drive being much the smaller of the two. When I load Dropbox on the computer and synch it almost all of the solid state hard drive is

on the small gear icon located in the top-right corner of the dialog box that appears. Click on, “Preferences in the drop-down list. Click the, “Sync” icon in the top row. You will find a section on this page named, “Dropbox Folder Location”. Click the “Move” button to select a new location for your dropbox files, then click “OK”, click “OK” again, and once more to close the dialog box. I didn’t actually move my Dropbox folder because my D: drive doesn’t have any extra room, so there might be a couple of extra “OK”s that you might have to click before you are done.
