“Spamalot” A Lot to Enjoy as the Playhouse Opens Again By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer OGUNQUIT It’s back — live theater, that is — at the Ogunquit Playhouse. And while it differs from previous Playhouse seasons, with a massive outdoor performance pavilion, mandatory masks and seating for two in safety pods, it still feels good to gather again in person, as the pandemic wanes and Maine opens. “Monty Python’s Spamalot,” a super-silly spoof of just about everything, opens the season. A laugh-a-minute romp through plague-ridden Tudor England, it sends up time-honored legends
like King Arthur, his knights and their quest for the Holy Grail, classic Broadway musicals like “Man of La Mancha,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “The Producers,” “Gypsy” and “Phantom of the
Opera,” and hot button topics like gay marriage. Eric Idle, a member of Monty Python, the brilliant British comedy group, wrote “Spamalot” in the early 2000’s.

These reported numbers reflect
a comparison to the May 2020 COVID-19 shutdown statistics. May 2021 sales volume was comparable to pre-pandemic sales volume levels, about one percent above the May 2019 figures.” According to the National Association of Realtors, singlefamily existing home sales across the country rose 39.2% in May 2021 compared to May 2020. The national MSP of $356,600 represents a 24.4% increase from
He “lovingly” ripped it off from the 1975 movie “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and teamed with John Du Prez, who wrote the music. It won three 2005 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, under the legendary Mike Nichol’s direction. Then, Nichols tapped BT McNicholl to oversee the Broadway, West End and national touring productions. McNicholl helms the Ogunquit show, using the version that Idle crafted for a Las Vegas production. He tapped Nate Bertone to design the set for the Playhouse’s May of 2020. Regionally, sales across the Northeast increased 46.9% and the regional MSP increased 17.1% to $384,300, compared to May 2020. “We continue to see swift market conditions with most transactions navigating multiple offers,” added Bolster. “Statewide, the Days on Market for May 2021 was six days, compared to 17 days a year ago, and 20 days in 2019. The month of May brought additional for-sales homes onto the market, with active single-family listings up
Vaccinationland Sweepstakes! STATEWIDE Governor Janet Mills announced the “Don’t Miss Your Shot: Vaccinationland Sweepstakes,” a statewide program to encourage Maine people to get vaccinated against COVID19. The sweepstakes will reward one vaccinated winner with $1 for every person vaccinated in Maine by the Fourth of July. The cash winnings increase by $1 for every Maine resident who receives at least one dose, as reported on the U.S. CDC vaccination tracker: the more people vaccinated, the higher the prize. The final prize amount will be determined by the number of

Maine met that goal on May 12 and has also met that goal ahead of schedule for a larger eligible population: people 12 years and older. Maine is closing in on having 70 percent of adults fully vaccinated as well. “Maine is a national leader in COVID-19 vaccination thanks to the more than 876,000 people who have already rolled up their sleeves,” said Governor Mills. “Our goal with the Don’t Miss Your Shot: Vaccinationland Sweepstakes is to encourage even more people to get the vaccine and declare their independence from COVID-19 as we approach the Fourth of July.” Entry into the sweepstakes requires providing your name, See SWEEP page 8...

~ News ~ Precast Concrete Entrance to Shipyard’s New Superflood Basin Arrives
KITTERY The precast concrete entrance to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard’s new Superflood Basin arrived at the shipyard by barge the morning of June 21. Conventional construction of the basin entrance was not feasible as it could impact the availability of the shipyard’s Dry Dock #1, which remains in service during construction to
support the submarine maintenance schedules at the shipyard. To overcome this challenge, the entrance structure was precast off-site and was floated into position and lowered onto a prepared foundation. The U-shaped precast structure includes two caisson seats to provide positioning options. It measures 110-ft long, 67-ft wide, by 60-ft tall and weighs approximately 5,000 tons.

“The design, construction, and installation of the entrance structure represents a creative solution to challenging site constraints utilizing construction techniques scaled to an impressive size,” said Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Thomas of Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command. The Superflood Basin directly supports the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program (SIOP), a multi-year, multi-billion dollar undertaking for refurbishing the nation’s four public shipyards with modernized equipment, improved workflow and upgraded dry docks and facilities designed

one step closer to operating independent of the Piscataqua River tides and optimizes our dry dock operations for years of safer and more efficient use in continuing to deliver submarine readiness to the Fleet.” The Superflood Basin construction project was awarded in November 2019 to Cianbro Corporation, as a firm-fixed-price contract for $157,949,610. Dry Dock #1 is the shallowest of the three dry docks at the shipyard and required a buoyancy assist system comprised of large floodable air-filled tanks in order to dock and undock submarines. The basin, similar to a navigational lock, is being constructed at the entrance of the dry dock and enables submarines to dock without the use of buoyancy assist tanks.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ ...PLAY from page 1 his trusty sidekick Patsy and assorted Knights of the Round Table trot about on imaginary horses. They participate in several splashy production numbers, including the outlandish “Fisch Schlapping Song,” the Vegas-inspired “Knights of the Round Table” and the disco-like “His Name Is Lancelot. Charged by God to find the Holy Grail (the chalice Jesus used at the Last Supper), one funny bit follows another as they get waylaid on their impossible quest by the diva-like Lady of the Lake, a side trip to Camelot (resembling Las Vegas’ Camelot-inspired Excalibur resort), and another where lewd French soldiers taunt them. There are black knights, the charge to put on a non-Andrew Lloyd Webber style Broadway musical, a bottle dance straight out of “Fiddler”, the outing of Sir Lancelot and a wedding at the end, because every good musical ends with a wedding, doesn’t it? Over-the-top cast members are clearly thrilled to be strutting their stuff before a live audience
again. Standouts are the affable Charles Shaughnessy (“The Nanny”) as properly befuddled King Arthur, Jen Cody as his stalwart little sidekick Patsy, Mariand Torres as the lusty, luscious Lady of the Lake and Marc Ginsburg as gay Sir Lancelot. Saturday night’s audience laughed plenty and was eager to be entertained — even when the vast pavilion’s acoustics made the music echoey and caused spoken lines to vanish. Despite the sound issues, kudos are in order to the cast, crew and Playhouse staff and benefactors for bringing live theater back in a safe, sane way. “Always look on the bright side of life,” Patsy implores Arthur as Act II begins. It’s the “Spamalot” theme, magnified many times over as post-pandemic life returns to nearly normal again after 15 long months. “Spamalot” plays through July 10 at the Ogunquit Playhouse. Tickets $47-$117 for two seats. Single seats and groups of three now available based on availability. Call 207-646-5511 or visit www.ogunquitplayhouse. org for details.

Jeweler’s Legacy Show Premier
KENNEBUNK The Brick Store Museum’s Bauman Family Contemporary Gallery kicks off its summer season with “Peggy Johnson: A Jeweler’s Life,” a legacy exhibit showcasing the work of Maine jeweler and innovative artist Peggy Johnson. The exhibit runs through August 1. The exhibition of her work will be accompanied by several Maine jewelers who recently received donations of Peggy’s tools.
Maine jewelry artist Peggy Johnson died in August of 2020 on Munjoy Hill in Portland. She had lived in that neighborhood for the last two decades but began her jewelry career in the 1970s in Philadelphia. The arc of her more than three decadeslong career was spent creating both original production and one of a kind pieces. Those years saw many manufacturing innovations that she employed to make her work. The museum exhibi-
tion will trace not only Peggy’s individual creative path but also celebrate the way in which contemporary jewelers and metalsmiths continue to integrate handmade work and new technological developments within the field to survive and thrive into the 21st century. A companion display entitled The Legacy Show, will include work by several Maine jewelers and metalsmiths who received the generous donation of some of Peggy’s tools. Exhibiting artists are Shelby Goldsmith, Danielle Gerber, Nick Rossi and Ann Thompson. Metalwork related to the exhibition will be for sale with a percentage of funds directed towards supporting a new generation of Maine jewelers and metalsmiths. For more information, visit www.brickstoremuseum.org or call 207-985-4802.
New Exhibit at KW Contemp. Art KENNEBUNK KW Contemporary Art, 184 Port Road, Kennebunk, is pleased to present Homeward, a new exhibition with sculptor, Paul Villinski. Paul has created studio and large-scale artworks for more than three decades. A pilot of sailplanes, paragliders, and single-engine airplanes, metaphors of flight and soaring often appear in his work. With a lifelong concern for environmental issues, his work frequently repurposes discarded materials, effecting surprising and poetic transformations. This exhibition marks the first time Villinski’s work has been exhibited in his home state of Maine. KW Con-
temporary Art will celebrate the opening of this new exhibition Saturday, July 3, 5-7 p.m. All are invited to attend. Paul Villinski’s work has been included in numerous exhibitions nationally, including a FEMA trailer transformed into an off-the-grid mobile artist’s studio! For more information, go to www.kwcontemporaryart. com or call 207-204-0480.

During the public hearing on LD 1620, Lauren Wayne, general manager of the State Theatre in Portland, and Nick Turner of The Grand theater in Ellsworth, testified in favor of the bill. Both testified that their venues had lost about 98 percent of their revenue in the past year due to

erans and non-veterans suffer. Sunday, June 27 is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Injury Awareness Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness around the signs, symptoms, and stigma, associated with PTSD. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental health disorder that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event. According to the PTSD Foundation of America, an estimated 7.8% of Americans will experience PTSD at some point in their lives, while about 30% of service members who have spent time in war zones experience PTSD. Typically, only 50% of PTSD sufferers seek treatment. On any given day there are around 19 million Veterans, living and thriving in communities across the country. A recent survey found that almost 70% of Americans believe that most veterans struggle with PTSD, while 25% of Americans believe PTSD is untreatable, and

those with PTSD are violent and dangerous. The truth: PTSD is treatable, and many of those who carry a PTSD diagnosis are able to thrive in their post service life with minimal, if any, clinical intervention. The biggest threat to veterans is the stigma attached to mental health issues like PTSD and it prevents them from seeking help. Given that service members are one of the most vulnerable populations when it comes to stress-related illnesses, the American Red Cross has created dedicated services to help
military and veteran communities deal with emotional and mental health issues like PTSD. Helping military members cope with everyday stressors or take control of their mental health before, during and after deployment is especially important. If you or someone you know suffers from PTSD, please call 1-877-272-7337. For more information or to sign up for virtual workshops, call your local Red Cross chapter or contact them by visiting www.redcross.org.

Health & Fitness Sports Legends Join Bush Family to Raise Funds for Gary’s House PORTLAND The grandchildren of the late President and Mrs. George. H.W. Bush continued their grandparent’s legacy of hosting an annual golf tournament to raise funds for Gary’s House in Portland, a hospitality home and program of Northern Light Mercy Hospital. $1.9M for Cancer Prevention WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that the Maine Department of Health and Human Services has received a total of $1,901,817 to support cancer prevention programs across the state. This funding was awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Center for Chronic Diseases Prevention and Health Promotion. “Cancer is a terrible disease that has taken a heavy toll on families across our state. Cancer prevention and screening programs are vital because the earlier this disease is caught, the better the prognosis,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “This investment in the Maine Department of Health and Humans Services will help to improve the health of Mainers and ultimately save lives.” The leading cause of death in Maine is cancer, and Maine has significantly higher cancer death rates than the rest of the U.S. The Maine CDC Cancer Prevention and Control Programs help to reduce cancer mortality and increase cancer screening rates. Through coordinated and integrated strategies, the Maine CDC Cancer Prevention and Control Programs address the state’s cancer burden by: 1) conducting cancer surveillance, 2) increasing access to cancer screening, 3) improving health outcomes for people living with cancer, and 4) providing the evidence for and evaluation of policy and environmental approaches.

Over the years, the late President and Mrs. Bush chaired the event along with several generations of the Bush family. This year’s honorary co-chairs were Bush grandchildren, Marshall Bush and Sam Bush LeBlond. Tournament proceeds support Gary’s House, which provides affordable and comfortable accommodations for friends and family of loved ones receiving care at any southern Maine hospital or healthcare facility. The hospitality home is named in honor of Gary Pike, a young Kennebunk man who lost his battle to cancer in 1991. During his treatments, Gary saw firsthand the financial hardship

WELLS – Taylor C. Grant, lifelong resident of Wells passed away peacefully Monday, June 21, 2021 with family by her side. She was born May 2, 1983 in Exeter, NH, the daughter of Gerald and Raylene (Scott) Grant. Taylor developed Leighs Syndrome at an early age, restricting her to a wheelchair, but it did not keep her from living her life to the fullest. She was a 2002 graduate of Wells High School where she always had a smile for everyone who crossed her path. She was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, her favorite being Tom Brady. Taylor loved being a part of Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation, which opened many doors for her to ex-
perience camping and especially her favorite of downhill skiing at Sunday River. Taylor was one of their top fundraisers! Taylor will be remembered for her wit and unique sense of humor. She will be forever loved by her parents, Gerald (Gary) and Raylene Grant of Wells; three brothers, William Grant and companion Janell, David Grant and wife Jody, Michael Grant and husband Mark; sister Jennifer Grant and wife Carissa – all of California; sister Kelsey Knoll and husband Josh of Wells. She was the best Auntie Tay for her nieces and nephews. A time of visitation was held on Thursday, June 24 at 2 p.m. followed by a memorial service at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick. Interment will be held at a later date in the Littlefield Family Cemetery in Wells. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Taylor be made to the Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation, P.O. Box 853, Bethel, ME 04217 or www.maineadaptive.org. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home where condolences may be expressed at www.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com.

KENNEBUNK The Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation’s Huntington Common Charitable Fund (HCCF) is approaching the second-quarter deadline for new grant proposals. Created in 2006, The HCCF seeks to improve the lives of older adults (65 and older) in York County. The fund has paid out nearly $60,000 in grants so far in 2021. The next grant deadline is June 30. Nonprofit organizations with programs focusing on bettering the lives of older adults in York County can apply at www. kennebunksavings.com/about/ community-promise/hunting ton-common-charitable-fund/. “Older adults are a vital population within our Maine communities,” said Bradford C. Paige, President and CEO of Kennebunk Savings. “It’s a privilege
to be the stewards of this fund, and to see the innovative programs that local area nonprofits are putting together to help older adults stay connected and focused on wellness right now.” A few of the recent grants have included a York County Community Action program that helps older adults by pro-
viding small to medium-sized home repairs and modifications, meal programs for seniors in need through Table of Plenty, a confidential credit check station for the York County Elder Abuse Task Force and an integrative cycling program from Age Friendly Saco.

~ Obituaries ~ ...KOLBJORNSEN from page 14 kept close until the end. In 1988 she married loving husband Peter and moved to Maine. She began teaching at Mast Way Elementary School in 1988, and cherished her time at Oyster River Cooperative School District until her retirement in 2017. She is remembered fondly by her many colleagues and by countless former students whose lives she touched. After her retirement, Deb found great pleasure in her volunteer work at both the York and Kittery Art Associations, along with several other local organizations. A dedicated member of the arts community, Deb will be missed by the many dear friends she made as a result of her involvement in these organizations. Deb is survived by her husband of 33 years, Peter Morbekk Kolbjornsen, daughter Kate Elisabeth Kolbjornsen, son Andrew Olaf Kolbjornsen, his wife Jacklyn Moylan and son Atlas Moylan Kolbjornsen, as well as sisters Karen Semigran of Hague, NY and Paula Albin of Mexico Beach, FL. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly. Her family is devastated by this sudden loss, but will hold her in their hearts as they always
have. Deb was a truly spectacular human. Her courageous spirit, her unfaltering loyalty to loved ones, and her unparalleled beauty, kindness, and tenderness will not be forgotten. The family will hold a private ceremony this week. A celebration of life will be held later in the season, date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Fair Tide homelessness reduction program in Kittery. • • • • • • • • • •

As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth.

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

sedation during their neutering. This tipped ear alerts rescuers that this kitty has already been neutered, so there’s no need to trap him. Jubilee was living a stray life with two other kitties at a winter rental when a woman noticed them. After searching for their owners, she realized they were homeless. All three were brought to Safe Haven. Jubilee is the friendliest one, and is simply a charmer. He arrived with a severe ear infection, but has recovered. He even enjoys being carried around our shelter by a nine year old child, loves to be patted, babied, fussed over. He did test positive for FIV, feline immunodeficiency virus, which is not uncommon for male strays. He has no special needs or restrictions. He is able to live with other cats and all other animals and people of course. This happy, charming kitty will be a great addition to your family. When you meet him you’ll fall in love!
