E3 is a 2021 E-One typhoon with a 1,000 gallon water tank which supplies a Hale 1,500 gallon per minute pump which is powered by a 450-horse-power Commins Diesel engine. High School Seniors Enjoy Graduations and Celebrations

YORK COUNTY After enduring a year of scholastic COVID-19 challenges and then the lifting of some pandemic protocols, high school seniors, teachers and administrators are doing their best to achieve and enjoy a resemblance of a “normal” end-of-year send-off.

This past week graduation and senior week activities at local high schools included the following: At Wells High School, a traditional class of 2021 Commencement ceremony took place on June 4 at Memorial Field. In keeping with updated Maine CDC guidelines for large public venues, guests no longer needed a ticket to attend, “household pods” were eliminated but face coverings were recommended for those not vaccinated. On Wednesday, June

2 the Wells High School Graduation Parade took place that started from Wells High School and proceeded to the Ogunquit Playhouse. There was a full participation from students and families and cheers and car horns from

Masks and social distance guidelines were in effect but more open with family pods no longer be required. There was seating on the field and in the bleachers and no reserved seating necessary.

Also, as part of graduation, there was a large LED screen for viewing for those who were further away from the stage.

Marshwood High School Graduation is scheduled for Friday, June 11 at Stadium Field at 6 p.m. Masks are required. Prior to that, Senior Week activities included a Movie Night at the Saco Drive-In, Beach Cleanup and a Senior Night Program that included recognitions, performances and speeches under the “big tent’ at Berwick Academy to celebrate accomplishments and reflect on their year.

~ News ~ Car Crash Damages Historic House, Seeks Renovation Funds YORK Just before 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 29, a car traveling west along York Street crashed into the east side of historic Emerson-Wilcox House (built about 1735). No one was seriously injured, and alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the accident. The incident, however, resulted in significant structural damage to the house.

Museum staff are working to assess the damage, secure the house, move collections and clean up debris. An initial assessment indicates that the Long Parlor, where the car entered the building, is significantly compromised. Much of the woodwork, which dates to an 1840s remodeling of the building, is damaged or destroyed, and a portion of the original 18th-century post-andbeam construction on the east side (Lindsay Road entrance) has been demolished. Splinters of wood, plaster, paint, nails, and other debris are scattered throughout the adjacent rooms and hallways. “It looks like a bomb went off inside the house,” says executive director Joel Lefever.

Old York will retain preservation architect Deane Rykerson of Rykerson Architecture in Kittery Point to determine the structural damage caused by the accident, and give an estimate

for the costs of repair. Old York’s Board of Trustees, recognizing the need for an extensive restoration of the whole structure, has been discussing plans for a potential reinterpretation of the building for more than a year. The house has not had a heat system in almost 40 years, and the damp conditions have taken their toll.

The timetable for a more comprehensive restoration of the house is uncertain at this time.

Any insurance settlement will subsidize the cost of restoring the exterior and interior damage caused by the accident. But as is often the case, that money likely will not meet the full needs of the undertaking. “Raising the funds and restoring the entire building is a long-term project,” says Lefever, “and it will be a multi-year endeavor.”

A fund dedicated to the restoration of the house has been established. Or is there a program out there? I know that you can hire a service to do all the scanning which would be so awesome, however, it’s not an affordable option for me. Thanks for any direction! Sincerely, Lora Dear Lora, You are right that you will need to scan each photo with a scanner. The software that comes with the scanner should make that part easy for you. I like the Epsom Perfection series of scanners, they are high quality (You will get better scans than you will from an inexpensive printer/scanner/copier machine) last a long time (I am on my second one in 25 years) and the software that comes with it has a lot of options. I would scan each photo in .jpg format since that is pretty universal, and the file format will be used for many years to come. You can organize the pictures with a combination of file names (1985summer001.jpg for example) and folders. I usually have one folder for each year, with quarterly folders inside. If there is a big event that year like a wedding, it would get its own folder as well. If you organize them in a program like power-

point, or publisher, your photos are only as good as the program you use. If the person you send it to doesn’t have that program, or the company making the program stops developing or supporting it, people would not be able to view the photos. You can add information to the photos in a couple of ways. After you have scanned the image, you can open it in a photo program and add tags. A tag can be a person’s name, or an event. Once you have tagged your photos the information is part of the picture and can be accessed by right- clicking and clicking on “Properties” then look at the “Details” tab. Another idea would be to write or type a small description on paper, and scan it with the photo. That way, your description would be part of the image. Once you have your photos scanned and organized into folders, you can burn those folders to a CD or DVD using any burning program. I would just burn it as a data disk, then anyone can use the pictures on their computer. I hope this helps you with your photos. ~ News ~ Climate Action Plan Launch Event YORK Climate action in York is not new: In 2009 the town appointed an Energy Steering Committee (YESC), which undertook a number of energy efficiency upgrades to municipal facilities, funded by voters over several years; In 2019 the York Select Board committed to cutting the community’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 50% by 2030 and 100% by 2050 (carbon neu-

trality), and to join the Global Covenant of Mayors to undertake an aggressive climate action plan.

The Climate Action Plan (CAP) will include mitigation strategies for GHG reductions as well as adaptation strategies for the physical impacts of climate change, such as sea level rise, inland flooding and extreme heat. The final CAP will provide concrete, data-driven strategies to realize the town’s goals of reach-

Previously, this event brought supporters together for dinner and an auction. Because of COVID-19, the affiliate decided to host just the silent auction part and to do that online. As expected, the event did not raise as many funds as usual, but it did have some great

Marginal Way Preservation Fund Announces 10th Anniversary Fundraiser of the most painted and beloved places anywhere in America. A 1-¼ mile meandering pathway along the Atlantic in the heart of Ogunquit, the conveyance of this precious strip called the “Marginal Way,” is the finest donation the town of Ogunquit has ever received. Josiah Chase, Jr. donated the original parcel in 1925. The Marginal Way coastal path is framed by expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean and lined with beautiful shrubs

of fragrant pink and white sea roses. The picturesque footpath is called “the margin” because of its patterned development along the edge of Maine’s cliffs.

In 2018, the Marginal Way was impacted by a series of Nor’easters that caused over a million dollars in damages.

The Board of the MWPF was inspired to begin work on a fundraiser to alleviate the impact of these storms on the townspeople. The Fine Art Competition

OGUNQUIT In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Marginal Way Preservation Fund’s establishment as a 501(c)3 nonprofit, the Board of the MWPF will hold a virtual fundraising auction culminating with a ceremony on June 27 for the five finalists of the Nationwide Fine Art competition and the announcement of the awards to the finalists totaling over $10,000.

The art competition was open to anyone 18 years of age and older at any stage of their careers. The theme for the competition was a “Love for the Ocean”. Artists were invited to submit in any of the following mediums: painting, photography, drawing, mixed media, and print. Cash prizes for the five finalists include: First $5,000; Second $3,000; Third $1,000 (two awarded for third); Honorable Mention $500; and People’s Choice $200. Artists can win both the People’s Choice and one of the top categories.

The five finalists’ works will be displayed during the week of June 20 at the Van Ward Gallery in Ogunquit and on the final evening of the auction, the Board will host a private Awards Ceremony for the five finalists and also hand out the People’s Choice award at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art on June 27. Anyone registering for the virtual auction can vote for the “People’s Choice” award.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ DaPonte String Quartet Young Strings Workshop Deadline NOBLEBORO In the beautiful, secluded and relaxed lakeside setting of historic Camp Kieve’s Wavus campus on Damarisotta Lake in Nobleboro, the DaPonte String Quartet will hold a weekend long workshop for aspiring high school string players. The weekend is dedicated to the study of chamber music, it’s preparation and performance, accessed through the great works of the string quartet literature. The final event of the workshop is a concert featuring the student ensembles.

Sixteen students, selected by audition, are organized into four string quartets. They are coached in a round-robin style by the individual members of the DaPonte String Quartet (violinists Lydia Forbes, Ferdinand Liva, violist Kirsten Monke and cellist Myles Jordan). The coaching sessions focus on the elements of ensemble playing: listening, communication, cueing, rhythm, intonation, blending, theory, and music history. Historical background, the knowledge that is handed down through a lineage of teaching, and the layers of meaning in the

music are explored and elaborated upon.

The camp will provide high quality musical education that enables students to develop new skills and refine existing ones, increase self-esteem, build positive relationships through teamwork, and forge alliances that potentially involve life-long bonds.

The workshop is offered at no cost to the student. All lodging, food and tuition costs

~ Graduation News ~ Wells High School Graduation and Top Ten for 2021

WELLS Wells High School is excited to announce their top ten students for 2021. What follows is an alphabetical listing with abbreviated school biographies: Kathryn Cafaro is the daughter of Rayanne and Anthony Cafaro. Kathryn plans to attend the University of New Hampshire to study Mechanical Engineering. She has been a member of “Teen Trendsetters” reading program and an integral part of two school drama productions as a performer and in assisting the tech crew. Kathryn has received numerous Book Awards and has been a participant in the WHS Winter Guard program which earned 3rd place at the NESBA finals in 2018. She also received First Place in the Literary Achievement Awards in her sophomore and junior years.

Leah Cluff is the daughter of Jeanine and Steven Cluff and will be attending Husson University to study Sport Management.

Leah has been the WHS Girls Lacrosse Team manager and a key member of the WHS Soccer and Basketball teams which, the latter, became the Class B State Championship Basketball Team in 2020. Leah received a Book award for excellence in mathematics and was honored as a Student of the Trimester.

Connor Lavigne is the son of Joseph and Jessica Lavigne and will be attending the University of

Miami to study Civil Engineering with the goal of designing sustainable, carbon-free buildings.

Connor is the 2020-2021 recipient of the Tyler/Grandmaison MELMAC Citizenship Award.

As a student-athlete, Connor participated in WHS Football, Outdoor Track and intramural programs. He is the recipient of the Algebra Book Award, a Literary Achievement Award and honored as a Student of the Trimester.

Gavyn Leighton is the son of Lucas and Leya Leighton. This fall Gavyn will be attending the University of Maine at Orono to major in Mechanical Engineering. At WHS, he has been a member of the WHS Basketball, Outdoor Track, and Soccer programs. Through these programs and as a member of these teams, Gavyn has won Regional Championships, including six Western Maine Conference Championships (two WMC Champion honors in Triple Jump, one WMC Champion honors in High Jump, one WMC Champion honor in Discus, one WMC Champion honor in Javelin, and one WMC Championship honor in Basketball). Gavyn has also devoted over 500 hours volunteering in his community.

Sydney McDermott is the daughter of John and Kimberly McDermott. This fall, Sydney will be attending Stonehill College to major in Psychology. At WHS she has been a member

of the Environmental Club, the Cross Country team and the Drama/Music programs.

Sydney has volunteered her time in both Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Teen Trendsetters mentoring programs. She has won numerous Book Awards, First Place in the Literary Achievement Awards, honored as a Student of the Trimester, and recognized for excellence with a Breakfast of Champions award.

Jacob Michaud is the son of Edward and Kelly Michaud and will be attending the University of Maine at Orono to major in Computer Science. A student-athlete, Jacob became a State Champion in the Indoor Track Hurdles event. He also made multi-year commitments to the WHS Indoor Track, Soccer, and Outdoor Track programs. Jacob is a member of the National Honor Society and is the recipient of numerous academic awards. Throughout his career at WHS he has achieved High Honors.

Lindsey Parker is the daughter of Marisa Boothby and Rick Parker. Lindsey plans to attend Norwich University to major in Civil/Environmental Engineering. She has made four-year commitments to both Indoor Track and the Lacrosse team where she was captain. Lindsey is a member of the National Honor Society and is the recipient of the Warrior Pride award and Book Awards in Algebra I/II. Lindsey

has participated in several clubs while at WHS including Fems in STEM, the Environmental Club, and intramural programs.

Kate Pinette, Class of 2021 Valedictorian (top photo), is the daughter of Christopher and Paula Pinette. Kate will be attending Babson College to study Business Administration with a focus on Marketing and Sustainability. Senior Class Vice President and Treasurer of the Environmental Club, Kate is also a student-athlete having participated in WHS Outdoor Track, Cross Country, and Soccer programs. Kate received a York County DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) Good Citizen award and is a recipient of numerous WHS faculty awards in the areas of English, Art, Mathematics and Social Studies.

Jonah Potter is the son of Tasha Walker Potter and Adam Phillip Potter. In the fall, Jonah will be attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute majoring in Aerospace Engineering. While at WHS, he has been a four-year member of the WHS Wrestling, Football and Lacrosse teams.

During this time, Jonah has served as team captain, awarded numerous coaches awards, and received a Western Maine Conference Citizenship Award. He has won eight total State Championships at Wells High School, including two in Football, four in Team Wrestling, and two in-

dividual Wrestling State Championships.

Grace Stevens, Class of 2021 Salutatorian (bottom photo), is the daughter of Rob and Taunya Stevens. Grace plans to attend the University of Massachusetts at Amherst to study Animal Science/Pre-Veterinary Medicine. She is the recipient of numerous Book Awards, Student of the Trimester and Breakfast of Champions recognitions. Grace is a life-long member of the Girl Scouts organization and a dedicated member of the WHS Color Guard/Winter Guard program where she has served as captain and participant in the Macy’s Great American Marching Band program for several years.

Traip Academy Announces Co-Valedictorians and Latin Honors Students KITTERY John Drisko, Principal of R. W. Traip Academy, is pleased to announce the Co-Valedictorians and Latin Honor students from the Class of 2021.

Summa Cum Laude: Addyson Hale (photo on left) is the Co-Valedictorian of the senior class. She sees success as achieving happiness and satisfaction with oneself. This perspective is something that she has practiced throughout high school. Addy is a leader in the school and on the field. Being a 3-season athlete, she has participated in soccer, basketball, and softball during her time at Traip Academy. She has also spent the last four years on the student council, serving this past year as president, finding innovative ways to promote school spirit and a positive learning community. She will be attending the University of Georgia and is planning to major in Biology.

Mary Lombardi (photo on right) is the Co-Valedictorian of the Senior Class. When COVID19 shut down schools, she started sewing masks and hanging them on the fence for people to take. She pushes her learning in new ways, such as going on

an Exchange Program to Italy, and sailing tall ships off Maine’s coast in the Sea Challenge program. She also attended SRTC in their Engineering and Architectural Design and was named SRTC’s Student of the year!

This fall, she will be attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA, and majoring in Biomedical Engineering.

Kiara Audette has a passion for learning. In addition to her academic achievements, she has excelled in Track & Field and X-country, making it to the State finals the past two years. At Traip Academy, she has been involved in Student2Student, The Civil Rights Team, NHS, and Bring Change to Mind. In the fall, she will be attending USM or YCCC. Jodie Dodd is an intelli-

gent, confident, organized, and responsible young adult. During her time at Traip Academy, she has been involved with numerous groups, including the Robotics Club, Math Team, NHS, Student2Student, and Project SEARCH, to name only a few.

She spent her junior year at SRTC in the Health Occupations program, and is part of NTHS. In the fall, she plans on attending the University of Southern Maine to major in Nursing.

Kassandra Hawkes will be attending William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ this coming fall, where she plans to double major in Psychology and Sociology. As a student at Traip Academy, Kassie is independent, has a strong work ethic, and knows how to advocate effectively for what she believes in. She has also

been able to earn 21 college-level credits, through dual enrollment at YCCC. Kassie has been an avid dancer since elementary school.

Allison Maurice has had the opportunity to try new experiences in Marching Band, Tennis, and The Paddling Team at previous schools. Here at Traip Academy, she is a member of the Civil Rights Team and is a member of the Kittery Climate Adaptation Committee. In addition, she has participated in Girl Scouts of America for the past 12 years between her studies and co-curricular activities. Allison will be attending Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, where she intends on majoring in Biochemistry.

Eliza Pereira is accomplished, thoughtful, poised and insightful. Eliza is an outstanding three-sport athlete, a member of the National Honor Society, and participated in the Traip Garden Club and Math team. She is Secretary of her class leadership cabinet where she demonstrates a strong ability to be a positive role model.

Eliza has an incredible amount of genuine compassion that she generously offers to others. She

will be attending the University of Vermont to study in the Arts & Science program in the fall.

Abigail Pitcairn is the type of student that lights up a room with her captivating smile. She is Vice President of her class, a member of the National Honor Society and was a key member (Goalie) of the 2019 State Championship Soccer Team as well as participating all four years on the Traip Varsity Softball Team.

Abby is an outstanding and gifted artist. She won the Gold Key 2020 Scholastic Art & Writing Competition and has designed costumes and set designs for Traip’s musical theater program.

FINANCE & CAREER Perloff Family Fund Offers Grants to Public Schools STATEWIDE The Perloff Family Fund of the Maine Community Foundation will accept applications for four grant programs that benefit public schools in

Maine.

One-year Fast Track Grants of up to $3,000 are available for all areas of pre-K through grade 12. Applications for the 20212022 school year are available

April 1 and close June 30.

STEM4ME grants of up to $5,000 focus on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and are funded on a rolling basis for up to two years.

Supplemental Budget Supporting Maine Businesses & Workers AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills announced that she has signed the Fiscal Year 2020-2021 supplemental budget into law. The bipartisan supplemental, which passed the Senate unanimously and the House by a vote of 139-1, provides State income tax relief to all Maine businesses that received Paycheck Protection Program funds and exempts unemployment benefits from State income taxes for approximately 160,000 Mainers.

“This supplemental budget is the result of a long and, at times, arduous debate.

But ultimately it was sensible compromise on all sides that got it across the finish line,” said Governor Janet Mills.

“Because of that, approximately 160,000 Maine people who received unemployment benefits and the 28,000 Maine businesses that received PPP funds will receive tax relief – important progress as we continue to fight the pandemic, keep Maine people healthy and vaccinate them as quickly as possible, and accelerate our economic recovery. I commend all parties and Democratic and Republican leadership for this bipartisan outcome.”

The Governor also signed into law a package of bills sponsored by Senator Louis Luchini (D-Ellsworth) that, in part, codifies into law Executive Orders she has issued supporting restaurants, bars and distilleries, which have been adversely impacted by the pandemic. The Governor signed LD 205, “An Act To Extend the Ability of Restaurants and Bars To Serve Alcohol To Go,” LD 306 “An Act To Temporarily Waive Certain Requirements for Relicensing for Restaurants That Serve Liquor” and LD 307, “An Act To Expand the Market for Maine Liquor Manufacturers.”

“The pandemic has hit Maine’s restaurants, bars, and distilleries hard, but through the difficulty, they have adapted with characteristic Maine grit and determination,” said

Governor Mills. “My Administration, whether providing economic recovery grants or allowing to-go sales of alcohol, has done and will continue to do all we can to help them through this difficult time. I applaud Senator Luchini for spearheading these bipartisan bills through the Legislature. They will provide continued flexibility and relief to our critical hospitality industry.”

Highlights of the bipartisan supplemental budget include: Provides relief for 160,000 Mainers who lost their jobs due to the pandemic: The supplemental budget includes $47 million to exempt unemployment benefits from state income taxes for hardworking Mainers who lost their job through no fault of their own. This includes self-employed Mainers who saw their work dry up and Mainers who saw their workplaces close. Without this relief, Mainers who relied on unemployment benefits at some point during the pandemic would’ve been hit with $200-$500 per person in state taxes; Provides relief for Maine businesses: The supplemental budget allocates $100 million to exempt Maine businesses who accessed relief through the Paycheck Protection Program from state income taxes. This relief would support more than 28,000 businesses across the state.

Provides relief for direct care workers and nonprofit providers: The supplemental budget provides $30 million in State and Federal money to the people who provide quality, compassionate care to Maine seniors, individuals with disabilities, and children.

Invests in veterans’ services: The supplemental budget honors our servicemen and women by providing more than $100,000 in support for Maine veterans. These funds will help hire a homeless veterans coordinator and fund basic maintenance for veterans’ cemeteries.

Sets money aside for savings: The supplemental budget puts $8.2 million in the budget stabilization fund, also known as the “Rainy Day” fund, which will now have grown by more than $58 million.

Supports the Early College Aspirations program for working-class Mainers: The Aspirations Program provides eligible Maine high school students with an opportunity to receive academic credits toward a high school diploma, and an associate or baccalaureate-level degree, through enrollment and successful completion of collegelevel courses at approved Maine institutions.

Invests in a new Comprehensive Child Welfare Information System: This efficient new system, which improves DHHS’s ability to track and share data, will allow caseworkers to spend more time working directly with families.

Takes steps to address contamination from “forever chemicals”: The supplemental budget establishes a fund to address growing concerns with PFAS. Promotes the construction of affordable housing in Maine: Language in the budget maximizes the value of Maine’s low income housing credit by conforming with a recent change to the federal credit.

These grants enable students to create real-world solutions to problems in areas such as renewable energy, ecology, automation, space science, and sustainable food production. Integration with the arts and humanities is encouraged, when possible.

Robotics grants support pre-K through 12th-grade programs that are integrated into the curriculum. All students at a particular grade level are generally expected to participate, including those who fall into special needs categories. Sufficient numbers of laptops should be available for all students to engage in programming.

The Perloff Family Fund also provides special funding on a rolling basis to smaller, rural

schools for programs such as the Children’s Stage Adventure.

COVID-19 Patient Bill of Rights Becomes Law AUGUSTA A bill from Senate President Troy Jackson of Allagash and House Speaker Ryan Fecteau of Biddeford to establish a COVID-19 Patient Bill of Rights became law without the governor’s signature last Wednesday.

LD 1, “An Act to Establish the COVID-19 Patient Bill of Rights” requires state-regulated health insurance companies to cover COVID-19 screening, testing and immunization at no cost to the patient. It also prevents health care providers from

charging patients any sort of fee related to these types of services.

“As more Mainers become eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine each day, lawmakers must ensure nothing prevents any Mainer who wants to get vaccinated from getting their shot. The COVID-19 Patient Bill of Rights ensures that all Mainers with state-regulated health insurance will be able to access COVID-19 testing, screening and vaccination at no cost to the patient,” said President Jackson. “In Maine, we are finally beginning to see the light at the

by Maine people who have received their first vaccination, now almost 30% of Mainers, is life-changing. As of today, there is a new provision in Maine law that says COVID-19 vaccinations and testing must be available at no cost to Maine people. I’m proud that the COVID-19 Patient Bill of Rights makes sure nothing prevents Mainers from getting the health care they need to protect themselves, their families and loved ones from this serious virus,” said Speaker Fecteau.

“This bill makes sure cost is not a barrier to any Mainer in our fight against COVID-19.”

Although uninsured Mainers should be able to access testing and vaccination at no cost, the amended proposal includes language to ensure that if an uninsured Mainer is at a testing site that doesn’t have a contract with the Department of Health and Human Services: they are made aware of the cost ahead of time; they are made aware of alternative sites where they can get tested for free; and they are provided with the MaineCare form to get reimbursed for testing if they choose to get tested at a site without a DHHS contract.

Grill Fires Turn Dinner into Disaster WELLS As the summer season approaches, fire and disaster remediation specialists from SERVPRO in the Wells area know that the number of grill fires will increase, peaking in July. “Charcoal and gas grills, barbecues and the like are involved in an average of more than 5,000 structure fires each year and almost 5,000 additional outdoor fires,” said Rick Isaacson, CEO of Servpro Industries, LLC. Beyond that, Isaacson adds, grilling accidents result in 19,700 trips to the hospital annually. Thermal burns account for 9,500 of those visits, and children under the age of five account for an average of 2,000, or 39 percent, of those burns... Before you grill: READY: Clean grill racks and grease trays. For gas grills, check the gas tank hose for leaks at the beginning of the season.

SET: Choose a safe, firm, level spot for the grill away from coolers, running children and pets, and mingling guests.

Grill outside, never in a garage or under the awning on a deck, the eaves of your home, or lowhanging branches.

GO: Prepare the grill for cooking carefully. For charcoal grills, use a charcoal chimney with newspaper, a charcoal

starter fluid, or an electric charcoal starter plugged into an outdoor-rated extension cord. For gas grills, open the lid before turning the grill on.

If you smell gas after the grill is lit, do not try to move the grill. Get away from the grill and call the fire department...

While you grill: SAFE ZONE: Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the hot grill, both while you are cooking and after you serve the food. Grill surfaces can remain hot for an hour or more.

SAFE TOOLS: Use longhandled grill utensils in good condition; avoid loose, flowing clothing; and wear flameretardant mitts to adjust vents to help prevent burns.

SAFE COOKING: Keep the fire under control. Manage flareups by adjusting grill height, using grill controls, or spreading out the coal bed.

Keep baking soda within reach to control grease fires. Watch for blowing embers and have a fire extinguisher, a garden hose, or a bucket of sand handy to extinguish spark-triggered fires. Never attempt to move a hot grill.

Health & Fitness How to Limit Risk from Toxic Browntail Moth Hairs STATEWIDE The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC), Maine Forest Service (MFS), and 211 Maine remind residents and visitors that browntail moth caterpillars are emerging from their winter webs in trees. These caterpillars shed tiny hairs that can cause a skin reaction like poison ivy.

When the hairs become airborne, they may cause trouble breathing if inhaled.

As many Mainers head outdoors for recreation and yard maintenance, they may be at increased risk of coming into contact with these toxic hairs. Maine Forest Service identified winter webs in all Maine counties in 2021. The greatest risk for exposure to the toxic hairs is between April and July when larger caterpillars are active. The hairs can be in the air and land anywhere, including on trees, gardens, lawns, and decks. Most individuals affected by the hairs develop a rash that lasts for a few hours up to several days. In more sensitive individuals, the rash can be severe and last for weeks. Inhaling the hairs may cause respiratory distress in some people. The rash and difficulty breathing result from both the toxin in the hairs and barbs on the hairs that cause them to become embedded in the skin and airways.

There is no specific treatment for the rash or breathing problems caused by exposure to browntail moth hairs. Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms and eliminating ongoing exposure.

Browntail moth caterpillars are easy to identify. They are dark brown with white stripes along the sides and two

red-orange dots on the back.

Younger caterpillars lack these white stripes.

Steps to protect yourself from browntail moth hairs: Avoid places infested by caterpillars; When performing activities outdoors that may stir up caterpillar hairs-aim for damp days or spray vegetation down with a hose as the moisture helps keep the hairs from becoming airborne while working; Cover face with respirator and goggles; Tightly secure clothing around the neck, wrists, and ankles; Take cool showers and change clothes after outdoor activities in infested areas; Dry laundry inside to avoid hairs embedding into clothing.

Stained Foot Mystery Solved!

YORK COUNTY According to local news outlets, the mysterious black stain found on the feet of area beachgoers has been solved – Our southern Maine beaches have been plagued with a wash of tiny dead bugs!

To paraphrase the Portland Press Herald: While walking along Wells Beach, Ed Smith thought to contact retired oceanographers Linda Stathoplos and John Lillibridge, marine geologist Steve Dickson with Maine Geological Survey, and to the Department of Environmental Protection in case it was toxic.

WMTW News 8 reported that the bug carcasses and stain are harmless and, although stubborn, will wear off from feet on its own time: “It’s just a discoloration. It’s a natural substance in the body of these insects. It probably comes from some plants,” Lillibridge said.

WELLS Coal needed a new home because his family moved and they couldn’t take him with them. Housing restrictions are among the biggest reasons why people surrender their pets.

At first, Coal was taken in by a friend, but he was unhappy because of a dog in the family.

Luckily, Coal was brought to our Safe Haven Adoption Center, where he’s been a wonderful resident who has charmed all the volunteers.

This handsome guy is only five, with gray short-hair and bright yellow eyes. He’s sweet and affectionate. He enjoys being picked up and held and is also quite a talker. infection that his eye had already ruptured, and he had to have it removed. We’re praying that with the medications and around-theclock care Max is receiving, that he will be able to keep his other eye. The vets say he has a 50-50 chance. The other two kittens that went to emergency had infections. One caused lameness and the other was vomiting. We feared dehydration, which can kill a small kitten quickly, so he received emergency care as well.

All three kittens are now back at Safe Haven and doing well.

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Meet Oliver, a one and a half year old orange tiger with a birth defect that left him with only one eye. The amazing thing about animals is the way they can adapt to a disability like this one. This cute boy doesn’t realize he’s supposed to have two eyes and acts like a typical cat his age – very kitten-like. Oliver is playful, funny and energetic.

He’s also loving and affectionate and has a loud purr. He enjoys being petted and brushed and responds with adorable head butts. Oliver is a very happy boy, looking for a forever home.

Merrill “Mack” Howard Boston, 77 DOVER, NH – Merrill “Mack” Howard Boston, beloved son, brother, father, grandfather, and fishing partner, died peacefully at home on June 5, 2021 while surrounded by loved ones.

Mack was born January 2, 1944 in South Berwick to the late Albion and Mildred (Moulton) Boston. He was preceded in death by siblings, Minnie Greaton, Virginia Vachon, Evelyn Rhodes, Gordon Boston, Sylvia Mailhoit, and Florence Hashem.

As a young man, Mack spent much of his time playing pranks, skipping school and getting into mischief with his late brother Gordon. When he wasn’t playing jokes, doing magic tricks, or making someone smile, you could find him catching as many fish as the warden would allow. He loved to fish just to fish. He would share his catch with anyone. Mack was also very talented with a guitar, harmonica, and singing. Traveling to a variety of places to share his talents with and among friends and family. And recently re-found his love for drawing and painting. thanks to his friend Jane, and was fantastic. Mack felt it important to wash his truck a lot, sometimes every day. It made

~ Obituaries ~ him happy to see it shinny and clean. He was a loving man; to know him was to love him and his cheerful spirit.

He is survived by his loving family: children, Stacy (Alex) Jette of West Newfield, Wendy (Richard) Bodenschatz of Canton, OH, and Merrill Boston II of Berwick; siblings, Edithe Jepson and Fay Jepson; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many friends, nieces, nephews, cousins, and so many others who called him papa or dad – And one special grasshopper. His love for people was endless.

Mack always felt wearing black at funerals made it feel sadder and we should be celebrating the life they lived. In honor of his favorite color please wear something orange to his services.

In lieu of flowers please donate to his nephew’s church (South Berwick / Wells Christian church), Wentworth Home Care Hospice, or pay it forward with your time and heart like he often did for so many others.

BERWICK – Ida May Guptill passed away June 1, 2021 at Varney Crossing Nursing Center in North Berwick, just two days shy of her 94th birthday.

She was born June 3, 1927 in Boston, MA, daughter of Gardener and Louisa (Manning) Downs and a graduate of Ashland High School in Ashland, NH. Ida was a mechanical inspector at Clarostat in Dover for many years and also worked several years at the Somersworth Day Care Center before retiring.

Ida and her husband Donald of 61 years, loved camping in Rangeley for many years. She also loved watching her grandchildren play sports, always there to cheer them on.

She lived her life with joy, positivity and faith. She taught people she came into contact with what the true meaning of respect and compassion really means. She has left behind many life lessons. When you think of the word Beautiful... Ida was every meaning of the word “beautiful”.

Ida was predeceased by her granddaughter Brittany Tibbetts in 2012. YORK – Jane Pratt passed away peacefully at home after a courageous battle with cancer on June 3, 2021. She was born in Bennington, VT, on February 12, 1939, the third of four children to James and Ethel (Johns) Suitor.

The Suitor family moved to York when Jane was five years old. Jane moved to Boston after graduating from York High School in 1957 and began a successful career in bookkeeping. At the age of 20 she married the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Pratt, in June of 1959 and moved back to York. Bob and Jane had three children. In addition to her own children, she was blessed to also have three step-daughters she loved as her own.

That raffle did so well that we decided it should all be a raffle so anyone can enter. With a silent auction, it can get quite expensive to be the winning bid.

The raffle ticket prices make it available to most and the packages have something for everyone.”

Because of the response from our local businesses, this

year’s event is focused on going local. From a scooter to ride around town to a fantastic sailing excursion with local wine, local seafood and local produce prepared for a picnic, these packages are all about “Exploring York County.” Amy Nucci, “We want to support and highlight local businesses as we have been the recipient of so much support from our community.”

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth.

As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words.

Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief.

In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service.

Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased.

Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.

The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering.

The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering.

Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies.

The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual.

Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased.

If you use your computer only for reading email and web browsing, and perhaps playing games, you need a good recovery image, but if you are not adding pictures and documents to your computer there is no need for an ongoing backup program. You might want to create a new image once a year to keep it updated. If you use your computer to store data like pictures, documents, recipes, patterns, knitting directions, music, etc. you will need an ongoing backup routine. I suggest a good backup program like Acronis True Image, and an external hard drive that you plug in to do your backup, then remove it from your computer when the backup is finished so that it is safe from ransomware. Acronis can be set up to do the recovery image. It can also be setup to do the ongoing backup on a regular schedule.

If you add new files every week, then backup weekly. If you only add them occasionally, set your backup to once a month. When you need to access the files on your backup, you just use the Acronis software. Noble Teacher Receives Prestigious Award NORTH BERWICK Noble High School History teacher, Mary McAuliffe has been selected as the NH Fellow by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation. The foundation offers $24,000 in James Madison Graduate Fellowships to individuals desiring to become outstanding teachers of the American Constitution at the secondary school level. The goal of the fellowship is to help secondary level history, gov-

ernment, and civics teachers to become outstanding educators of the U.S. Constitution.

Lucky Pup Rescue Receives $500 from Partners Bank KENNEBUNKPORT Partners Bank’s $500 gift through its Employee Donation Program for the month of April is one for the dogs – literally.

Assistant Branch Manager of the bank’s York location, Matthew Sundsbury-Francois, has chosen Lucky Pup Rescue to receive the program’s monthly gift.

“I chose Lucky Pup because of their passion to help animals that can’t help themselves and put them into loving and deserving homes,” Sundsbury-Francois said.

Lucky Pup Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has helped re-home dogs in

need, successfully finding homes for more than 1,700 dogs since its inception in January 2008. Their mission is to find the best match to a forever family so that both the family and their new canine friend will have a healthy life together.

Furthermore, the rescue places new dogs with foster families to learn house manners and to become comfortable with new experiences so they are ready for their forever family.

Wentworth-Douglass Hospital Names Jeff Hughes President and CEO SEACOAST Wentworth-Douglass Hospital is pleased to announce Jeffrey Hughes, MPH, FACHE, has been named permanent President and CEO of Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. He becomes just the 11th permanent lead administrator in the organization’s 115-year history.

Hughes had served in the interim role since October 2020 and succeeds Gregory Walker, who served as President and CEO for 23 years. Hughes has been with the organization since 2012.

He has also led many successful initiatives for Wentworth-Douglass, including the development of several longrange strategic plans that have resulted in the hospital becoming a member of the Massachusetts General Hospital family in 2017 and a part of the Mass General Brigham system, the development and expansion of several clinical service lines, and the organization’s expansion into Portsmouth.

In his eight years at Wentworth-Douglass, Hughes has served in numerous roles including as Chief Operating Officer, Vice President of Operations / Chief Strategy Officer, and Vice President of Strategic Planning. Prior to coming to Wentworth-Douglass, he served in various leadership roles for multiple health care organizations and as a Director of health care management consulting for PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Boat Registration Renewal Online STATEWIDE An online service allows boat owners to register boats with the State of Maine. Following the transaction, owners will receive a temporary registration form to print for immediate use.

Official registration and stickers will arrive at the shipping address specified within 30 days.

Boat registrations are valid from January 1 through December 31.

Starting on December 1 each year, boat registrations done through this service will be for the following calendar year.

Fees vary depending on the length, model year, use, and horsepower of the boat (vessel) being registered. This service allows you to pay both state registration fees and municipal excise tax fees in one transaction. Before submitting payment, owners will have the opportunity to review all fees. This service is provided by a third party working in partnership with the

State of Maine. The total amount paid includes funds to develop, maintain and enhance the state’s official web portal, www.maine. gov, and its online services like this one.

The boat registration renewal service is available to registrants who have previously registered their boat, live in or primarily dock their boat in a municipality that participates in this online service and are required to pay excise tax.

Please note that boats registered by non-residents in Maine that are in Maine less than 75 days are not required to pay excise tax, and cannot use this application. At this time, boats owned by businesses cannot be renewed online.
