I’ve so many wonderful opportunities both on the ground, in the air and in space — and underwater,” he said in a video posted on Twitter after a final underwater session in the neutral buoyancy laboratory at Johnson Space Center in Houston. Cassidy was born in Salem, MA, but considers his hometown to be York where he attended high school. He served 28 years in the Navy and was in the SEALs for 11 years. He made four six-month deployments: two to Afghanistan, and two to the Mediterranean, according to his NASA bio. Upon hearing the news, Maine Senator Susan Collins wrote, “Congratulations to Capt. Chris Cassidy of York on his retirement following a stellar career that ranged from underwater to outer space! Over nearly three decades of service in the Navy and at NASA, Chris, a Navy SEAL, was deployed four times, received the bronze star, and participated in three space flights. When he joined Dr. Jessica Meir on the International Space Station last year, it marked the first time in history that two Mainers were in space simultaneously. I was delighted to participate in a Q&A with them on NASA TV so that students and educators could hear about their experiences. Thank you, Chris, for inspiring countless young Mainers to reach for the stars, achieve their dreams, and serve their country.” (Photo from Senator Collin’s Facebook page) Have you seen our
