Craft Organizer Extraordinaire

By Staff Writer Nancy McCallum WELLS Life without craft is unimaginable to Darr Littlefield. Littlefield, a Wells resident, is known to many as the organizer of three annual craft shows held in Wells in July, September and November. But others with a longer memory remember her as the crafter who once made her living from her business Teasel Weed. Littlefield, a certified herbalist, made herbal cosmetics such as lotions and soaps, as well as “herbaceous creations” – wreaths, swags and potpourri. She attended as many as 42 craft shows per year.

Littlefield’s craft life spilled into the management side more than 40 years ago when the craft organizations she belonged to – The Society of Southern Maine Crafters and United Maine Crafters – asked members to volunteer to direct craft shows. Littlefield did this for several years, and then she and a crafter friend decided to organize their own show. They created a two-day show in Wells on the weekend after July 4, as there were no summer shows in Wells at the time. “We started the Summer Solstice Show on the lawn of the junior high school. There were probably 10 or 15 crafters,” Littlefield recalls. That

was 36 years ago. Shortly after, Littlefield took over the reins when her friend bowed out of the summer event. Also, the year after that first show, Littlefield took over a holiday show that had originally been run by the League of Maine Crafters. She continued to hold the show at its Portland location until 2006, when she moved it to Wells. A few years later, Littlefield added a third show to her schedule, when, due to the positive response to the summer event, she held a show the first weekend after Labor Day. All three shows are juried, with free admission. They are all two-day events and are held

at Wells Junior High School on Route One. Littlefield, who works full time as the administrative assistant for the Wells Chamber of Commerce, gets some help with the events from her husband Raymond Fortin. For many years Fortin prepared lunch items, while Littlefield baked the desserts. Over time, the demands of the show became too great, so lunch and snacks are now made by a local food vendor, “Beach Dogs Café.” Littlefield accepts about 80 vendors for the July and SepSee LITTLEFIELD page 10...
