York Pro Named USPTA Maine Pro of Year YORK Kris Elien, Head Tennis Professional at the York Golf & Tennis Club and 2019 Davis Club Captain and Player for the U.S. Virgin Islands team, has been named the United States Professional Tennis Association’s (USPTA) Maine Pro of the Year. “It’s such an honor,” says Elien, a native of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, who relocated to
York in 2012 and is in his sixth year as Head Tennis Pro at YGTC. “It’s great to be recognized for something you love to do.” He is USPTA, Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) certified, as well as a certified master of Tennis in Junior Development, and is currently completing the Master of Tennis Adult Certification. “Kris has grown in so
many ways and learned so much since his move to Maine,” says Lisa Wilcott, Tennis Director at YGTC and USPTA Maine State President. “He’s a big asset to our club and to the area’s tennis community.” Elien, who teaches all ages and levels at YGTC, also continues to play competitively. He will return this summer to play in Costa Rica as the captain of the U.S. Virgin Islands Davis Cup
team, for which he’s played nine years and has been the captain five years. He plays competitively indoors as well, beginning with winning New Hampshire’s premier annual Karl Ingard Seacoast Tennis Tournament a few years ago. “He competed against a top Florida pro and won, even though it was only the second See TENNIS page 4...

Seacoast Siblings Carve Up the Competition ELIOT Catherine Lynch,14, her brother William,12, and her sister Margaret,11, of Eliot each took home numerous ribbons at prestigious wood-carving competitions in the last few months. At the 49th Annual Ward World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition and Art Festival held in Ocean City, MD, the siblings won a total of 13 ribbons. Among those were a blue ribbon that Catherine received for her green-winged teal hunting decoy and a second-place ribbon she took home for her carving of a swainson’s thrush. Margaret’s awards included red ribbons for her bufflehead duck decoy and for her blue jay carving. William won honorable-mention ribbons in numerous divisions. Held April 26-28, the world

Catherine, William, and Margaret study under local master carver Jim Higgins, also of Eliot. Higgins, a seasoned veteran of carving competitions whose own carvings won a number of ribbons at the shows in Ohio and Maryland, is dedicated to passing on the art of wildfowl carving to the next generation of carvers.
