Seven Museums in the Seacoast region Open Free to the Public YOrK COuNTY – For over 100 years, Historic New England has served as the region’s storyteller, opening its doors to share four centuries of New England home and family life. Historic New England’s Open House, on Saturday, June 1, and Sunday, June 2, welcomes visitors free of charge to seven historic sites in the Seacoast region of New Hampshire and southern Maine. Travel 10 miles and be transported through four centuries of New England’s history. Discover Jackson House, the oldest surviving wooden frame home in New Hampshire, stop by Hamilton House to see its murals depicting the Piscataqua’s glittering past, visit Rundlet-May House to find out what an early 1800s high-tech kitchen looked like. And catch a view from the Sarah Orne Jewett house window from the writing desk where the author penned 19th century Maine life as she saw it, and tour the new exhibition White on White: Rural Church-

Memorial day events launch Summer Season Sentinel Staff Report YOrK COuNTY – The summer season will officially kick off this Memorial Day weekend as southern Maine families fire up the grill, veterans unfurl flags and out-of-state visitors arrive to vacation on the picturesque coastline of the Pine Tree State. Amid the picnics, the parades and the summer-launch parties that traditionally mark the three-day weekend, The Vietnam Veterans of America, Sanford Chapter No. 1044, will set aside time to remember the men and women of the military who gave their lives to ensure the nation’s continuing freedom. A “Fallen Warrior Ceremony” will be presented in cooperation with the Quint/ Cheney American Legion, Post 87, and the Town of North Berwick. The ceremony, which will also pay tribute to POW/MIAs who have never returned to U.S.
shores, will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, at Mill Field, located at 21 Main St., North Berwick. “On this sacred day, we honor the memory of those Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard members who have died fighting for the freedom and liberty that we enjoy every single day,” said Joseph Armstrong, president of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter No. 1044. “As far as we know this ceremony has never before been

Change of Command Ceremony Scheduled at Shipyard KITTerY – Portsmouth Naval Shipyard will conduct a Change of Command ceremony at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 24, on the Shipyard’s Mall. Rear Adm. (Select) L. Bryant Fuller III will be relieved by Capt. William C. Greene as Commander. Rep. Mike Michaud (Maine – 2nd District) and Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (New Hampshire – 1st District) will be the shipyard’s guests at the event. Honors will be rendered for the congressmen during the ceremony with a 19-gun salute. Vice Adm. Kevin M. McCoy, Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command, will preside over the ceremony and provide the keynote speech. McCoy began his current assignment in June 2008. Rear Adm. Townsend G. Alexander, Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, will be the guest speaker. Alexander began his current assignment in September 2011. Fuller assumed command Oct. 9, 2009. During his command, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard delivered seven submarines back to the Fleet and completed more than 150 intermediate level maintenance

Highlighting this substantial workload, the shipyard delivered USS Helena (SSN 725) as the fastest engineered overhaul in history; USS San Francisco (SSN 711) on-time and more than $2 million under budget; USS Memphis (SSN 691) inactivated 30 days ahead of schedule; USS San Juan (SSN 751) delivered eight days early, and the first-of-its-class major maintenance availability on USS Virginia (SSN 774) all delivered with traditional Portsmouth quality. Additionally, a major renovation to Dry Dock No. 2 was completed, along with the new construction of a Consolidated Emergency Control Center, Waterfront Support Facility addition, Consolidated Global Submarine Component Facility and the Back Channel Marina. Lastly, Fuller welcomed over 1,300 new employees to the shipyard since the start of his command. Capt.
