“Thank You” to Frontline Workers and Their Sacrifices STATEWIDE Frontline workers have been highly deserving of thanks and accolades especially now during the COVID-19 pandemic. The month of May provides conveniently-timed recognition weeks to help remind us of the sacrifices made by doctors, nurses, police, firefighters, and other frontline staff. National Nurses Week concluded on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. Nationaltoday.com wrote “Thanks to her strict use of hand-washing and hygiene practices while caring for wounded
soldiers in the Crimean War, Nightingale and her helpers reduced the death rate from 42% to
2% — ushering in nursing as we know it today.” With over 3 million working
nurses in the US currently, nurses make up the highest percentage of the healthcare workforce. Registered nurses work everywhere from hospitals to nursing homes, or directly at a patient’s home. To show your appreciation, be sure to thank these “behindthe-scenes” professionals. At the least, bring them coffee to help them through their 12-hour (or more) shifts! A post on Southern Maine Health Care’s Facebook page said, “On this final day of Nurses Week, we want to thank all nurses for choosing a selfless profession that has never been more important. Thank you for your dedica-
tion and sacrifices. Thank you for your uncompromising excellence and compassion... They’re the heart in the heat of the moment. Being there when loved ones can’t be.” National Police Week runs May 10-15 this year, and was established to pay tribute to law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Usually at this time, thousands of officers from across the country make their way to Washington D.C. to honor the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the course of their duties.
and Footbridge beaches will allow walking, surfing, paddling, and fishing. Those with physical limitations are welcome to remain in position on the beach. Sports-related activities will still be prohibited since social distancing protocols are still in place. Estuary access is also prohibited at the main beach. Social distancing must
remain in practice at all York County’s beaches. Visitors should keep a distance of 6 feet from each other and group in less than 10 people. Please keep dogs leashed so as not to approach strangers needlessly. And please remember – People from out-ofstate are still subject to a 14-day quarantine. Local Beaches “Soft Open” YORK COUNTY York County’s beaches are slowy and carefully opening to local residents. After much deliberation, town officials have planned soft-openings which take into account the health of visitors and businesses alike. “Maine Magical Realism” in Clark’s New Book YORK“Medillia’s Lament” is the newest release by local author Jody Clark of York. Like his previous five books, the story takes place in Maine. But unlike his previous books, Medillia’s Lament is a serious-toned story filled with despair, regret, and most of all, with what Clark calls “Maine Magical Realism.” The story, which is centered around two brothers, John and Kevin Mathews, takes place on fictional island called Applewood, just off the coast of Maine.

There will be no sitting, umbrellas, chairs, or tents allowed – and no access to the outdoor showers, fountains, or restrooms until June 1. Sohier Park will now be accessible but with no restroom or gift shop until June 1. June 15 is the intended date to open beaches to sitting as well as to open York’s

The magic stems from a fictional Native American legend about a fallen star named Medillia which crashes and emits its stardust onto the island. The following excerpt from the book describes it best: “As the legend goes, for the next nineteen sunrises, remnants of her stardust continued to fall onto the small Maine island. And it is said, during that brief moment in time, Applewood was turned into a magical place; a place where old wounds are healed, and a place where regrets find second chances. During this occurrence, time be-

comes irrelevant. The past, present, and future all get blurred together somehow, and within those nineteen sunrises, anything is possible… Anything.” The plot has many twists and turns, and although it starts off as a dark tale of loss and regret, it ultimately becomes a story about believing that things happen for a reason. When asked if this was his favorite book so far, Clark answered, “I know it’s cliché, but See BOOK page 6...
