Grahamtastic Connects Kids When Their World is Out of Reach By Adam Marletta Contributing Writer

SPRINGVALE – Communication is a regular and crucial part of all our lives. The need to socialize is especially urgent for children and teenagers struggling during life’s formative – and challenging – times. But for children like Gabrielle Severance, life can often be quite lonely. Severance, 14 years old, was diagnosed with a brain tumor three years ago, and spends much of her day in the hospital. However, a donated laptop -- equipped with Internet and video-networking programs like Skype -- has quite literally

trative office at The Cider Hill House, 170 Cider Hill Road, in York. White Pine has been serving the Seacoast area with nature connection experiences for children, teenagers, and adults since 1999. For the past 10 years, the offices and most programs have been based in the lower level of the house of co-founders Dan and Kate Gardoqui at 330 Mountain Rd. While educational programs will continue to be held at the Mountain Road campus, the new Cider Hill House office space will allow the administrative staff to have a more spacious area for long-range planning, staff training and meetings, mentoring calls, bookkeeping, fundraising, and event planning. White Pine’s phone number and mailing address will remain the same. “It’s exciting to be in the new space,” said Executive Director Dan Gardoqui. “Our growth over the past decade has been steady, and we have reached the point where we need space for many staff to design,

prepare for, and administer all of the different programs that we offer.” One program that has seen substantial is White Pine’s Naturalist Nights, which are supported by a grant from the Maine Community Foundation. Naturalist Nights are offered most Tuesday evening from 6 to 8:45 p.m., with topics like “Plant Medicines,” “Language of the Birds,” “Tidepooling,” and “Wildflower ID.” The full schedule for Naturalist Nights can be found on the “For Adults” tab on the White Pine Programs website, www.whitepineprograms. org. Naturalist Nights will continue to be held in the White Pine classroom and nature museum at Mountain Road, but in the future some of the more popular evenings may be held in a large meeting space at the Cider Hill Road facility. “Last year, our Owls program was attended by nearly 60 people, and they barely fit in the room,” said Dan Hansche,

Grahamtastic Connection’s mission is a simple one: To donate quality laptops to children who may not be able to attend school regularly. Like so many labors of love, Grahamtastic Connection was born of tragedy. Morissette’s 8-year-old son, Graham, died from leukemia in 1998. Morissette recalled the difficulty researching medical information, as well as her son’s inability to communicate with the world

outside his hospital ward. Graham’s illness, she explained, forced him to miss several days of school, play-dates with friends, and the general fun and enjoyment of being a kid. Using then-emerging Internet technologies, Morissette resolved to assist other ailing children suffering the same isolation. “Giving children the power to communicate is what it’s all about,” Morissette said. “It is very easy for children with terminal illnesses to become depressed and emotionally isolated. onboard the Peking in 1929 by Johnson, who then narrated the film in 1980. Woodman has several years experience on 100-foot schooners, working the passenger trade on the New England coast and also crewed on a Norwegian square rigger. He has a U.S. Coast Guard 100-ton Master’s License. His grandfather, Bernie Warner, had a shipyard on the Kennebunk River in the early 1900s, where he built large schooners and commercial fishing boats. Woodman carries on the tradition by building custom wooden boats in the off-season. Since 1987, he has been offering sailing trips from Kennebunkport. In 1999, he launched the Schooner Eleanor which he had built in 1998-1999. Artifacts from Kennebunkport’s golden age of sail will be on view before the lecture. ~ News ~ Fidelitas Students Plan June Mission Trip WELLS – Fidelitas Academy, a small Christian high school in Wells, is planning a mission trip to Greenfield, N.H., to work with Joni and Friends, an international organization dedicated to serving individuals and families with disabilities. At Joni and Friends family retreats, disabled individuals and their families receive encouragement and care in the comfort of a safe and accessible family camp environment. Fidelitas students and staff will be attending a June 10 to 14 family camp as volunteers, assisting the full-time staff in the day-to-day activities of running the retreat. By working in the local community, Fidelitas students are hoping to raise funds by cleaning the local beach areas and roads. Students will be visiting area businesses in Wells and

Rachel Carson NWR Announces Start of Prescribed Burning Season WELLS – The Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge will be working with wildland fire professionals to burn selected fields on refuge lands in Wells, Biddeford and Scarborough. The effort may begin this week, depending on conditions. Neighbors will be notified prior to conducting the prescribed fire operations. Safety is the most important factor in refuge fire operations and all of the measures listed below will be followed. The refuge has prepared a burn plan and will notify landowners and neighbors when a burn is scheduled. Refuge or cooperator fire specialists will stay on the burn unit until the fire is completely extinguished. A prescribed fire is one that is deliberately planned and set to accomplish a specific goal. In most cases, those goals are related to enhancing wildlife habitat. All refuge prescribed burning is done with municipal permits and can only be conducted when all conditions meet predetermined conditions to be safe and achieve desired results. Every operation has specific requirements or prescriptions, including description of area, expected weather and fire behavior, communications plans, as well as ignition, holding, contingency, safety, and site specific hazard plans, and job hazard analysis. Please contact Refuge Manager Ward Feurt 207-646-9226 or ward_feurt@fws.gov with questions.

Team will host a C02 Awareness Day from 6 to 7 p.m. on April 25 in the high school gym. This free public event will address the effect of the amount of C02 being released in the air, the problems this is causing, and how it can be fixed. The amount of C02 being released into the atmosphere is rapidly increasing and the reduction our own carbon footprint is encouraged in order to make a difference to our planet. With the amount of C02 in the air, Noble High School students are trying to make a difference in the local community and reduce their own personal C02 emissions. Co2 emissions are linked to rising temperatures. The Noble stu-

dents are putting on this event in order to address this issue. Students will host guest presenters from many organizations such as Energy Teach East in Berwick, Green Sneakers Project, and the North Berwick Farmers Market. Emily Fenderson, a student participating in the event, said, “This is a great opportunity for students to reach out to the community and teach them about the effect C02 is having on our planet and how we can make a difference in saving not only our planet, but energy and money as well.” More information on this event is available by e-mail: andrea.froburg@msad60.org, or call 207-676-2843.

‘A Thirsty World’ to be Screened at Kennebunk First Parish Church

KENNEBUNK – “A Thirsty World,” a film produced by world-famous aerial photographer and environmentalist Yann Arthus-Bertrand, will be shown at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 26, at Kennebunk’s First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church. Dessert will be served at 6:30 p.m. Though the event is free and open to the public, all par-

ticipants are asked to bring one item of non-perishable food for the York County Shelter Programs Food Pantry. The last program in this year’s Maine Sierra Club Series, the film will be followed by a brief talk on the state’s current water situation by Nisha Swinton, the New England coordinator for Food and Water Watch. Arthus-Bertrand founded

a nonprofit production company called “Hope” for the World Water Forum of 2012, producing “A Thirsty World” for that venue. The film narrates the history of water and reminds the viewer that the reasoned management of water is a crucial challenge for this century. The film was co-directed by Thierry Plantanida and Baptiste RougetLuchaire. Filmed in some 20 countries, the documentary’s aerial images were shot in regions difficult to reach and rarely filmed, such as the Southern Sudan and Northern Congo. The film brings together the filmmaker’s trademark aerial view of the world with the harsh everyday reality of all those people who are deprived of water and may even die for lack of it. Founder of the first aerial photography agency in the world, Arthus-Bertrand’s work has appeared in National Geographic, Life, Paris Match, Figaro Magazine, among others.

He prepared the book “The Earth from the Air” for the First Rio Conference in 1992. The photographer then created the Goodplanet Foundation that aims to raise public awareness of environmental issues. After the film showing, Swinton, graduate of The Vermont School of Law, will comment on the water issues in Maine and conduct the post-film question-and-answer. The Sierra Club Series is co-sponsored by the social justice committee of the Kennebunk First Parish UU Church. (courtesy photo)

Wells Elementary Connects to Underground Railroad

WELLS – Fourth-grade students at Wells Elementary School recently completed five weeks of study of the Underground Railroad, a network of routes and safe houses that helped bring African slaves from bondage to free states and Canada prior to and during the American Civil War. These students and their teachers held an open house for parents and others to highlight what students had learned from their research. Presented was a mock television game show patterned after “To Tell the Truth, a program on which panelists questioned contestants and then guessed which of three was telling the truth. In the Wells version, panelists tried to guess the identity of the real Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist and ‘conductor’ on the Underground Railroad. There was also a studentcreated play about children of slave parents pondering their fate following the sale of their mother. Wall displays included

ings. Other popular options include counselor-in-training classes, marine biology, reading, pottery and sculpture, and beach games. Adults may participate in daily morning lap swims. All classes are open to KBIA members, and membership is open to the public. Registration is offered by the week, and classes are offered a la carte

~ News ~ Country Parson’s Ride to Boston Led to Maine’s Oldest School SOUTH BERWICK – A horseback journey to Boston in January may have taken days and been hazardous for a 55-year-old rider in 1791. But John Tompson had dedication to his mission and prevailed, returning home with a charter passed by the Massachusetts legislature and signed by Gov. John Hancock, to start a school that today is Maine’s oldest educational institution, Berwick Academy. Seth Hurd will discuss the academy’s history in a talk entitled “Reverend John Tompson and the Founding of Berwick Academy. The program will begin at 7:30 pm on Thursday, April 25, at Berwick Academy’s Jeppesen Science Center on Academy Street. The public is invited and refreshments will be served. Hurd’s lecture is part of the

Old Berwick Historical Society’s 2013 series of talks, walks and historical events tied to the 300th anniversary of the Berwicks’ existence as an independent town. The anniversary series is made possible by member donations and by grants from the Maine Humanities Council and Kennebunk Savings. Hurd, a 1990 Berwick Academy graduate, today holds the post of Director of Finance and Operations at the school. He teaches upper school chorus and directs theatrical production. A resident of Acton, Maine, he directs music at the Acton Congregational Church, and is music director of the Granite State Choral Society. The 1791 Berwick Academy charter called for “promoting piety, religion, and morality and for the education of youth in such languages and such of the

liberal arts and sciences as the... Trustees shall direct. Citizens of Berwick, York, Kittery, Rollinsford, Portsmouth and Wells raised 500 pounds to launch the school. Tompson himself was pastor of the First Parish Church, which later became South Berwick’s First Parish Federated Church of today. In 1791, Maine was part of Massachusetts. Berwick – comprising today’s Berwick, South Berwick and North Berwick – was founded in 1713 when it separated from Kittery. Parson Tompson, who was Berwick Academy’s president from 1803 to 1825, also preached throughout the Seacoast area, delivering sermons

in Somersworth, Eliot, Kittery, York, Dover, Newington, Durham, Rochester, Wakefield, Portsmouth, Kennebunk, and Wells in addition to Berwick. Tompson followed the latest ideas of his day. He was considered an Arminian, a follower of the theology of Jacobus

Arminius, a Dutch pastor and theologian in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. This information and more can be learned at Thursdays lecture. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, Enjoy your e-mails. They are so helpful. I have a problem and need your help. I installed a PC Boost cleaner that I thought was free. Now I can’t close the program from running so I can uninstall it. Can you help me figure out how to get it closed? When I click on anything to close it, it won’t close. Looking forward to your answer, Linda Dear Linda, The best thing to do, is probably to start your computer in Safe Mode and then uninstall the program. To start your computer in safe mode, shut down the computer, then turn it on, and tap the “F8” button in the top row of your keyboard once every second until you see a menu on the screen with the option to start in safe mode. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to highlight “Safe Mode” then press the enter key and wait for Windows to load.

It will take a little longer to boot into safe mode. Once your computer has finished starting up, and you can see your start menu, click on “Start” and go to the Control Panel to uninstall the program. When you have finished uninstalling the program, restart your computer in the normal way, and you should be all set. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Ah, after all these years, I finally have a question. I have a little gateway notebook. Can the CDs (I have a Printmaster and a couple of others) be downloaded onto a flash drive and then used with the notebook? Thanks so much, Rachel Dear Rachel, I am guessing that your little notebook does not have a CD drive and that is why you want to put your programs on a flash drive. There are a couple of ways you can install your CDs on

your netbook. First, you can purchase a USB DVD drive at your local office supply store, or even online at Amazon. When you want to install a program from a CD or DVD, just plug in the external drive and your computer will recognize it and you will be able to run your CDs. Second, you can usually copy the entire contents of your install disks to a flash drive and install the program that way. There are a few programs that don’t work with this method, but I have had great success doing it this way. Just insert the flash drive in your notebook, open the flash drive folder and look for a file named either setup or install and double click on that. Hope this helps. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, We are trying to get the sound to work on a new Windows 7 installation. It previously worked through our external speakers, but now only comes from the monitor. What are we doing wrong? Chuck Dear Chuck, I can’t tell you for sure what is wrong without actually looking at your computer, but I can tell you what the most common reason for sound not working is. If you unplugged your speakers at all, or moved your computer when you did the new Windows 7 installation, you might have plugged your speakers back into the wrong port on the back of your computer. This is the number one reason sound doesn’t work after a computer has been worked on. On the back of your tower, there are anywhere from two to six sound jacks. Some are for speakers, at least one is for a microphone, there might be a line in, and/or a line out and they are

all the same size. The key is knowing which jack to plug your speakers into. I can’t always tell by just looking at the back of a computer, but from years of trial and error, I have learned that first you try the green jack, which almost always works, then if it has a black one, try that. Since you have sound coming from your monitor, perhaps you plugged your monitor speaker jack in where your regular speakers should have been plugged in. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I used a thumb drive to transfer a Quicken program from a desktop computer to a small laptop that does not have a disk drive. On the laptop, when I click on the *.exe file, I get a logo, which quickly disappears but cannot open the program. Can you suggest how to open the program? I do not own an external disk drive. Thanks for all your help over the years. Barbara Dear Barbara, A couple of things came to my mind as I read your question. First, did you copy the files from your desktop computer where Quicken was installed? If so, the problem is that you can’t just copy a program on one computer and have it work on another computer like you could back in the days of DOS. It needs to be installed from the installation disk. In this case, you could put your Quicken disk in the desktop computer and copy the entire contents of the disk to your thumb drive, then move the thumb drive to your laptop and run the install from the thumb drive. If you have already tried this, then it might be that your Quicken disk has some safeguards built in that won’t allow

Comments This Week: Dear Elizabeth, I have been “playing with” computers for many years. I go back to the DOS days - and did not even have a REAL reason to have a personal computer. I was taught by patient people. When they gave me instructions, “Type ‘ C:\dir” – and I did and it did not give me the directory - they would say, “Type it again. C:\ (backslash) dir” You remember... SANFORD — SIS Bank held its Annual Corporators Meeting recently, and three Corporators were chosen at random to select a charity to receive a $1,000 donation. David Ouellette selected the Sanford Food Pantry as his charity of choice, and Allen Moulton designated Angel Flight Northeast. Patrice Aprile selected Goodall Hospital. “Our Corporators are dedicated to the well being of SIS Bank and the community

business & finance simple Ways to cut Prom costs

The costs of attending the prom can start to pile up pretty fast. For cost-conscious parents and teens, a little relief from those mounting costs can go a long way toward ensuring the night is still magical but not a budget-buster. Finding ways to save money come prom season can be simple, and the following are a handful of ways parents and teens can make such a memorable night more affordable. Rent your gown. Guys rent their tuxedos for the prom, and gals can follow suit by renting their gowns for the night. Many stores rent gowns, and since teens likely won’t wear the gown ever again, renting is more practical than spending hundreds of dollars on a dress that’s destined for the closet once prom night has come and gone.

Borrow your accessories. Guys and gals can save money on accessories by borrowing certain items from Mom and Dad and other relatives. For the guys, in lieu of purchasing a fancy wristwatch or set of cuff links for the night, borrow Dad’s items instead. Girls can borrow a necklace or earrings from their mother, grandmother or an older sibling. Buying accessories like jewelry for the night can be very expensive while borrowing such items is free. And none of your friends will ever know the difference. Split the cost of a limo or take Mom or Dad’s car to the prom. Renting a limousine is considered a prom night tradition, so teens who must have a limo can split the cost with as many friends as possible to save some money. If a limo is beyond your budget, you can have just as much fun without the limo by borrowing Mom and Dad’s car.

Realtors announce Maine Open House Weekend MAINE – The Maine Association of REALTORS® will host Maine Open House Weekend, Saturday and Sunday, April 20 and 21. Maine Open House Weekend is held in conjunction with Nationwide Open House weekend, the nation’s largest open house weekend. During the weekend, Maine REALTORS® will hold open houses across the state for those interested in homeownership. Local Realtors will be available at open houses to answer questions about the home buying process and the local housing market conditions. “This is a great opportunity for buyers in the marketplace,” said Bart Stevens, president of the Maine Association of REALTORS®. “Interest rates are low and prices are extremely affordable. Maine Open House Weekend gives consumers the chance to find

out more about the home options available to them and gives them the opportunity to connect with local REALTORS® who can help with the home buying process.” According to the National Association of REALTORS® 2012 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, 45 percent of all buyers used open houses as

a source in their home search process. This figure suggests the value of open houses even in the Internet era. A listing of the homes that are participating in Maine Open House Weekend on April 20 and 21 can be found at http://mainelistings. com/openhouse.

...COSTS from page 13 You can still head to the prom with friends if you borrow a car instead of renting a limousine, especially if Mom or Dad happens to drive a minivan. Take your own photos. Many of today’s teens have their own smartphones, which may come with a highdefinition camera built in. These cameras are capable of taking great photos, which can save teens and their parents money on the cost of potentially costly photography. You can still order a photography package if you want some professional quality photos, but choose a smaller package and leave the rest of the night’s photography up to you and your friends. Attend an affordable afterparty. Some schools host their own prom after-parties at the school itself, and such parties are free or cost very little money. Such parties are a fun and safe way to end the night, and they won’t break the bank like a costly hotel room either. If your school does not host a post-prom gathering, head home at the end of the night or plan an after-party with friends at one of your houses. You will still end the night with a few laughs, but you’ll also end it with a few more bucks in your pocket. This article and photo was provided by MetroCreative. simple Ways to avoid Overspending as Retirement nears When the nest is empty and the kids no longer need financial support, many men and women find themselves with some extra money in their budget. Fewer mouths to feed and no more college tuition bills can give parents a sense of financial freedom they may not have had since before starting their family. But that freedom can also lead to overspending, something that can put retirement in jeopardy if people are not careful. Though it’s understandable for men and women to splurge on a well-deserved getaway once the kids have finally left the house, it’s important for adults to ensure that such splurging does not become routine. The following are a few ways men and women with some newfound disposable income can avoid overspending and putting themselves in financial hot water as they get closer to retirement. Pay with cash whenever possible. Swiping a debit card or credit card is certainly a convenient way to shop, but it can also be dangerous. Many people find it difficult to keep track of their spending when they use debit cards or credit cards to make their purchases.

Using cash to make purchases, especially daily purchases like a morning cup of coffee, reduces the likelihood of overspending. This can help you get a better idea of how much money you’re spending and if there are any steps you can take to curtail that spending. An effective way to use cash is to withdraw money from the bank once per week and use that as your weekly supply of money. If you find yourself frequently running out of money each week, then you’re likely spending more than you should. Keep a financial journal. Men and women who must adapt to having newfound disposable income may find it is not much different from younger men and women learning to manage their money when they first start working. Some of those lessons, like saving more than you spend, might need to be relearned. One way to get a grip on your spending is to keep a financial journal to track your daily and monthly expenses as well as larger purchases like a new television. Write down the monthly expenses you know you have each month, such as a mortgage payment or a car note, and each and every purchase you make, including how much you spend on dining out each month. Do this for at least a couple of months. When you have logged several

months’ activity, examine your journal to see if there are any expenses that can be trimmed to save money. Don’t go overboard rewarding yourself. Once your last child has left the nest, the temptation to reward yourself with a luxury item or two might prove overwhelming. After all, raising a family and paying for college tuition has no doubt required substantial sacrifice on your part, so it’s well within reason that you want to reward yourself after all these years. Avoid overdoing it so your finances aren’t stretched too thinly. A vacation with your spouse is reasonable, but buying a villa overseas might be a little over the top. Luxuries can be nice, but they can also drain a budget. Your monthly expenses once the kids have moved out should be lower, so if you find your cost of living has increased now that your nest is empty, you might be forced to determine which of your expenses are luxuries and which are necessities. Take advantage of your “experience.” Though accepting a “senior” discount might be a blow to your pride, it also can be a boon to your bottom line. Many establishments, including gyms, restaurants and movie the-

aters, offer discounts to men and women age 55 and older. This can help you save a substantial amount of money over time, and no one has to know you’ve started cashing in on your experience. Health & Fitness Goodall Hospital Receives Gold Star Award

SANFORD – The Maine Tobacco-Free Hospital Network recognized 31 Maine hospitals through the annual Gold Star Standards of Excellence program, during an event at the Maine Hospital Association. Goodall Hospital of Sanford received a gold level award for meeting best practice standards around creating a tobacco-free environment and supporting tobacco-free lifestyles. In addition, Human Resource Director Carolyn Burgess, who has been with the organization for 40 years, received a Gold Star Champion award for her efforts to enforce change within the organization regarding tobacco use. “Carolyn has been the person championing the changes in policy to bring Goodall Hospital to the standards they are at today. She sees the need to make sure that all employees and patients are working and staying in a tobacco-free environment and changing policy is a key factor behind that even when it is a difficult change for many.” said Betsy Kelly, director of Partners for Healthier Communities, Goodall’s Healthy Maine Partnership program. “Hospitals should be health and wellness role models

for their communities, so it’s important for them to set an example around reducing tobacco use and

exposure to secondhand smoke,” said Maine Tobacco-Free Hospital Network Director Sarah

Mayberry. “The Gold Star Standards of Excellence program is an opportunity to celebrate the hard work of Maine hospitals to address this issue.” All Maine hospitals that meet at least six of the 10 standards are invited to apply, and they are recognized at the gold, silver or bronze level, depending on the number of standards they have met. Morissette recalled one young girl who managed to successfully pass all her classes, thanks to her laptop. “I know she was very proud that she was able to keep up with her school work,” Morissette said. The organization primarily relies on donated laptops with no more than three years’ worth of use. They also accept “gently used” tablet devices such as iPads. Whenever recipients encounter any technical problems with their devices, the students of Westbrook Regional Vocational Center, via a longstanding partnership, are ready to offer free repairs. “These kids really are techno whizzes,” Morissette said of the Westbrook students. “And they take their jobs very seriously. It really is a case of kids helping kids.” Though Grahamtastic Connection is based in Springvale, in the 15 years since its start the organization has expanded throughout New England and beyond. Today the group has a collection of 250 donated computers and tablets for the more than 150 children it serves annually. Children under the care of eight Maine medical facilities and organizations have received laptops through Grahamtastic Connection as have youngsters at Wentworth Douglass Hospital in New Hampshire. vast majority of its young clients (80 percent) have been diagnosed with cancer. Another 10 percent suffer from cystic fibrosis and the remaining 10 percent from multiple sclerosis, car accidents or some other severe injury. And word of the group’s work has gotten out. In recent years, Morissette has appeared on Fox’s morning news show, “Good Day Maine,” and CNBC’s “The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch.” In 2009, Maine’s Coast 93.1 radio station named Morissette one of the “20 Outstanding Women You Should Know.” And just this month, Grahamtastic beat out 4,200 other nonprofits to win a 2013 Toyota Highlander. Morissette attributes the win to an outpouring of online support and promotion by local radio stations. “This will be our ‘Laptop Delivery Mobile’,” she said of the new vehicle. Still, at the end of the day, the children remain at the forefront of Grahamtastic’s work. Morissette is committed to fulfilling the group’s tagline:

SPORTS Neighboring Teams Face Off in Early Season Action By Larry Favinger Contributing Writer YORK COUNTY – The interscholastic athletic season really gets under way this week with softball, baseball and lacrosse topping the list of activities. There are some games that pit neighboring schools against each other. Friday, April 19, is a good example, as Class B York High School travels down Route 1 for a contest with Class C Traip Academy in Kittery. Traip, 1-15 last year in Class C, is looking for better things this season. Chris Andrews, who says he is excited about his new job, said, “We will not be the same

team this year as in the past.” He noted the softball team has been “working hard every day” to prepare for the season. “They know what I expect,” he said, noting that he has coached several of the girls “in the past in the younger leagues.” The team’s starting pitcher is Kaylie Andrews, the coach’s daughter, with Ali Barrett slated to do the catching. Coach Andrews said Emily Bolton, a senior, will be a strong influence from her center field position. “I’m looking forward to our first game (Monday) at home against Sacopee Valley,” he said. York, one of several Class B teams on Traip’s always tough

schedule, was 2-14 last year. The Wildcats, coached by Rob Butler,

open their season Monday, hosting Poland. Another game in which local teams collide is Wednesday when Marshwood visits Ken-

Marshwood Boys Split Season Openers By Larry Favinger Contributing Writer SOUTH BERWICK – Marshwood High School of South Berwick opened its 2013 boys’ lacrosse season last week, splitting a pair of games

against Class C opponents. The Hawks downed Massabesic in their opener, 14-4, but ran afoul of South Portland in their second game, dropping a hard-fought squeaker, 8-7, when See OPENERS page 35...

~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS – We added 12 kitties to our care last Saturday, and their arrival jumpstarts Kitten Season in a big way. Two mother cats, each with five kittens, now are happily enjoying life in Safe Haven’s NoKill program. We believe one of the mother cats is already pregnant again, which our vet will have to confirm. Caroline, one of our Thrift Shop kitties, always has something to talk about. This beautiful soft-coated grey kitty has beauti-

ful blue-green eyes. She loves the attention and affection of people. When she first arrived, she was sad and depressed because her owner became homeless and had to part with her. She’s been a Thrift Shop kitty these days and has performed all her shop responsibilities with great style and devotion. Now she’s ready to graduate into her very own home. Come in and meet her!
