50th Earth Day Anniversary Brings the Art of Coming Together YORK COUNTY The Planeteers of Southern Maine are hosting a project to celebrate the 50th Earth Day Anniversary and invites all to participate in the “Climate Community Clothesline”. Since the seacoast communities cannot get together for the usual Earth Day celebration, The Planeteers are excited to have residents create flags at home that will then be strung together when healthy safety allows us to reunite. So first consider: When it comes to the planet, what’s your passion or peeve? Second: Create

a flag or pennant (no larger than a pillow case) that reflects that. Third: Starting on Earth Day, April 22, hang it up on your front door, window, fence, or if very rural, perhaps ask a local shop to show it off. Fourth: Take a photo and email it, along with title and name, to info@someplaneteers. org and to SoMePlaneteers on Instagram and Facebook with hashtag #EarthDay2020 and #SoMePlaneteers. Lastly: Once we’re able to come together again, the flags will be strung together and the collection can become a traveling show be-

tween libraries with ceremonies at each stop. The Planeteers of Southern Maine is a grassroots effort dedicated to creating a sustainable future for the planet and more specifically for southern Maine. They seek to expand local communities’ use of alternative energies, to increase energy conservation, to reduce solid waste, to engage local municipalities and businesses in developing sustainability plans, and to engage area students in sustainability projects. King Pushes to Support Local Journalism Amid Pandemic STATEWIDE U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME) recently joined a group of nineteen senators seeking to support local journalism and media in any future coronavirus relief package. In a letter to Senate leadership and appropriators, the senators stress that the widespread impact of the pandemic – including plummeting advertising revenue – could decimate regional and local news outlets even as communities have become increasingly reliant on their reporting amidst the public health crisis. some newspapers have reduced or eliminated print editions, while other news outlets have furloughed staff. “The current public health crisis has made the already vital role of local news even more critical,” the senators wrote. “Some of the most important guidance for families and businesses during this crisis has been highly localized. Local journalism has been providing communities answers to critical questions, including information on where to get locally tested, hospital capacity, road closures, essential

ing the financial impact, especially our small businesses – who make up 99% of our business community in the state,” stated Quincy Hentzel, CEO of the

Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce. “We want to make sure that when we get to the other side of this pandemic, our local businesses are still there for us. So, we need to be there for them now. This campaign will allow our community to rally, as they always do in times of crises and hardship, and discover ways they can still support their favorite establishments over the next few months.” The #PayItForwardMaine campaign asks individuals, businesses, and organizations to continue supporting local businesses

and their employees in our new world of closed storefronts and social distancing. Your favorite local businesses have been there for you through thick and thin. Now it’s time for all of us to come together and return their service and support, with a new twist. #PayItForwardMaine is encouraging everyone to consider the following ways to show support: Buy a gift card, gift certifi cate, class pass, etc. – this may be
