“Splash into Spring” Returns to Ogunquit OGUNQUIT The Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce will be kicking off the 2022 season with its second annual “Splash into Spring” celebration. Splash events celebrate spring by focusing on sustainability in honor of Earth Day, local craft, art and theatre, and wellness activities to help get everyone ready for the summer. The celebration kicks off on Saturday, April 23, and extends through the second weekend of May, providing three weekends of fun activities for all ages in Ogunquit.
The Patriotic Pooch Pageant is just one feature of Splash into Spring.
Opening weekend features the Splash into Spring artisan craft fair at the Ogunquit Fire Station. More than thirty crafters will be displaying and selling
their locally made treasures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 24. Another feature of opening weekend is sand drawing with Sebastian on Saturday, courtesy of the Ogunquit Parks & Recreation committee. Join this talented artist on Main Beach as he shows you how to make beautiful large-scale drawings in the sand from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The annual Patriotic Pooch Pageant returns on Sunday, April 24, beginning at 12 p.m. in the Ogunquit Village School
Playground, located adjacent to the Fire Station and Dunaway Center. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. Dress your dog in costume, or just come and watch the antics of our four-legged friends. Prizes will be awarded in two categories: Most Patriotic Pup and Favorite American. You can also pose for a free caricature of you and your furry friend drawn by local artist Michael Lynch, who will be at the playground from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Headlining the art-themed weekend of April 30 is the Ogunquit Playhouse’s 90th birthday
party on Saturday at 3 p.m., featuring music, food trucks, a Cher impersonator, beer and wine tastings, and, of course, birthday cake. On Sunday, May 1, the Ogunquit Museum of American Art celebrates its opening day. Wellness activities round out the festivities on Saturday, May 7, featuring the Southern Maine AIDS Walk Your Way 5K on Main Beach, to benefit the Frannie Peabody Center, beginning at 12 p.m. Free beach yoga and a bike-and-beer meet-up are
reation is also hosting hunts on Saturday, April 16. Hop on down to the Waterhouse (ages 4 and under) or Parsons Field (ages 5-10) from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Have your face painted, take a photo with the Easter Bunny, and bring your own basket for the hunt (limit eight eggs per participant). Maine Senators Vote to Confirm Jackson
NATIONWIDE On April 7, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson became the first Black woman to be elevated to the Supreme Court after being confirmed by the US Senate. The final vote was 53-47, with all 50 Democratic caucus members, including Maine senator King (I), supporting Jackson. Maine senator Susan Collins (R) was joined by her Republican col-

leagues Lisa Murkowski (AK) and Mitt Romney (UT) in voting for confirmation. In a symbolic moment, Vice President Kamala Harris, the first Black woman elected to her job, presided over the vote. In a statement issued after the confirmation, Senator King said, “Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is one of the most impressive people I have ever met. After reviewing her record, attending a portion of her hearing, and meeting with her in person, it became clear that Judge Jackson is a brilliant legal mind with wide-ranging experience and an even judicial temperament wellsuited for the highest court in the land. Her deep knowledge of the law was on full display during our conversation, as she provided thoughtful responses to

pointed questions and repeatedly displayed her talent for assessing a case from every possible angle. It was an honor to cast my vote confirming her to the Supreme Court, and I look forward to seeing her valuable contributions to our nation in the years ahead.” Before the confirmation vote, Senator Collins had issued a statement saying, in part, “In my meetings with Judge Jackson, we discussed in depth several issues that were raised in her hearing. Sometimes I agreed with her; sometimes I did not. And just as I have disagreed with some of her decisions to date, I have no doubt that, if Judge Jackson is confirmed, I will not agree with every vote that she casts as
a Justice. That alone, however, is not disqualifying. Indeed, that statement applies to all six justices, nominated by both Republican and Democratic presidents, whom I have voted to confirm. It used to be common for senators to give the president, regardless of political party, considerable deference in the choice of a nominee. One need look no further than the 98-0 vote Justice Scalia received in 1986 and the 96-3 vote Justice Ginsburg received in 1993. This approach served the Senate, the Court, and the country well. It instilled confidence in the independence and the integrity of the judiciary and helped keep the Court above the political fray. And this is the approach that I plan to continue to use for Supreme Court nomi-

~ News ~ YCCC Now Offering Housing WELLS York County Community College (YCCC) is pleased to announce that it now offers a housing option for full-time students. YCCC housing is located in the Hampton Inn & Suites in Wells, known as “the friendliest town in Maine.” Beginning this fall, more than forty-nine beds will be available in fully furnished rooms, with additional amenities on site for residential students, such as weekly housekeeping and access to the fitness center and the pool. The student’s double bedrooms feature queen-sized beds, free Wi-Fi, television, mini-fridge, microwave, laundry facilities, and private full bathrooms. One director of Residence Life, along with four resident advisors will be on staff to assist students. Residents will get support and build community with students and staff through engaging programs and events. “We are thrilled to offer an opportunity for students to experience a residential community here at YCCC. Housing will provide students with a living and learning community that facilitates engagement and connection. The following basic requirements must be met in order for students to be selected to move into and continue living in housing throughout the academic semesters: applicants must be matriculated students in a YCCC academic degree program; be enrolled as a full-time student (defined as taking a minimum of 12 academic credits per semester in both the fall and spring semesters) in any academic program and making satisfactory progress toward a degree; be enrolled in at least nine credits of in-person and on-campus courses. (Exemptions will be made based on course availability.); and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0. Students carrying less than 12 credits per semester or who fall below the 2.0 cumulative GPA may appeal to live in YCCC residential space. For more information, visit https://tinyurl.com/twb7dkr2.

race issues in their community. (According to the 2020 census, South Berwick is 92 percent white.) After several sparsely attended programs at the public library intended to discuss these issues, a group of people had the idea of inviting a largely African American community to be a sister city as a way to make stronger connections. T he t wo com mun it ies hoped to encourage conversation, explore their differences, and share what they have in common. People from Tuskegee and South Berwick formed friendships and collaborations that eventually lead to the creation of Common Ground: Tuskegee South Berwick Sister City Project. The international sister city program familiar to many A mer icans was star ted by President Eisenhower in 1956. Portland, for instance, has four sisters, including Shinagawa, Japan, and Cap-Haitien, Haiti. However, the South Berwick/ Tuskegee relationship is most likely the first of its kind between two cities within the United States. In any case, its mission aligns with that of its international model, namely “to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and co-
operation – one individual, one community at a time.” Among other initiatives, including in-person visits between the cities by some of its residents, the relationship resulted in a regularly published column in the paper “The Tuskegee News” called “Color Us Connected,” shared by South Berwick journalist Amy Miller and Tuskegee journalist Guy Trammell. According to a recent CBS news report, Trammell and Miller “don’t write about politics. Instead, they share a slice of life from their unique perspectives as a Black man in the South and a White woman in the North.” Another result was the creation of the private Common Ground Sister City Facebook page. It has friends across the country and has hosted exchanges among teachers, pastors, journalists, and citizens. Now the joint committee of Common Ground Sister Cities is launching a fundraiser through GoFundMe to develop a website in which they can expand on their shared experiences and lessons, inspire others to bring people together, and proSee WEBSITE page 27 . . .

~ Ask The Computer Pro ~ Dear Computer Pro, I recently dumped a glass of water on my laptop, and it shut off almost immediately. I have left it upside down for a few days. Is there any chance it’s going to be OK? Is there anything else I could have done to save it? Thanks, Maria Dear Maria, Unfortunately, you are most likely going to need to replace that laptop. If it shut off instantly, that means the liquid reached some of the electronics and caused a short. There is a chance that it could dry over time and work, but those chances are pretty low. In the event it ever happens again, the best thing to do is immediately unplug it from power and remove the battery. This will, at least, keep power from running through the circuits and, hopefully, keep anything from shorting. Many of the laptops today, however, do not have

removable batteries, so there is not a lot you can do other than bring it in to a shop and see if they can help. Once all the power is removed, flip it upside down as much as you can in hopes that the water comes back out where it entered. Some business-class laptops have a keyboard that is designed to contain liquids and channel it through a little drain on the bottom. In that case, you would still want to remove power and the battery, and then you could flip it on its side with the laptop open about 45 degrees and let the water run out. I have seen this work many times as long as the liquid was water. Good luck! Matt Dear Computer Pro, I have a MacBook with an HDMI port and was given a beautiful monitor that only has a VGA port and a DisplayPort. I bought an adapter cable online that converted from HDMI to DisplayPort, but I still cannot get anything to display on the monitor. Is the monitor bad, or do you think it is the cable? Thanks, Chris Dear Chris, If I had to guess, the cable you purchased was a DisplayPort to HDMI cable. This cable is
intended for PCs that have a DisplayPort port and the monitor has an HDMI port. These cables will not work in the other direction. To convert HDMI to DisplayPort, you need an active adapter (www.amzn.to/3ve2G1C) and a DisplayPort cable (www.amzn. to/3KHmAbI). Also, if your laptop has a USB-C port, there is a good chance it will be able to convert to DisplayPort with an adapter cable (www.amzn.to/3E7ksYx). I find these to be easier to use, take up less space, and tend to last longer. Good luck! Matt
folder, you will see another folder named iTunes. This is the folder you want to backup. Assuming you have an external hard drive or f lash drive connected with enough space, simply right click on the iTunes folder, and select Send To and then your external device from the pop-up menu. Depending on just how much music you have as well as the speed of the external device, this could take quite a while. You will be able to see quickly, though, from the status window just how long it is estimated to take. Good luck! Matt
Dear Computer Pro, I have a ton of music in iTunes that I would like to backup, but I do not see how to do it in iTunes. Is this possible? I feel like I have been able to backup everything else on my computer except my music! Thank you for your time, Jim
Dear Computer Pro, With graphics cards being so scarce these days, what do you recommend folks do that have a child that wants to get into gaming? Thanks, Julie
Dear Jim, It has always been that Apple did not want you to backup your iTunes stuff for some strange reason, so they never put an option in the software itself. Luckily, it is a fairly straightforward task! First, make sure iTunes is closed. Then, navigate to your Music folder. Under your Music

Dear Julie, Not only are the graphics cards scarce, even if you do find one with a reputable retailer, they are still grossly overpriced. And it is not the retailer that is making the money on them, it is that they are overpriced in distribution, as well. The trickle-down effect . . . Many folks that I know that have been PC gamers for a while have decided to try console gaming again. Even though the
Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5 are also difficult to get, they are still much more affordable than the higher end graphics cards. For example, a GeForce RTX 3080 will run you over $1,000 right now at most any online retailer. An Xbox Series X retails at $499.99 and can be found in the $600 range online. The PlayStation 5 would be around the same, although they may be more difficult to find online. I am hopeful that the GPU prices will settle back down by the end of the year, but I am not sure they will ever drop down to what their retail prices were prepandemic. Even with the cost of electricity so high these days, most of the GPUs are still being snatched up by folks that are trying to mine cryptocurrency. Until that demand goes away, those of us that want them for gaming must either pay insanely unreasonable prices or just wait it out. Good luck! Matt I nterested i n lea r n i ng more? Give Blood During National Minority Health Month STATEWIDE April is National Minority Health Month, a time to raise awareness about health disparities that disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minority populations. The American Red Cross is reminding blood and platelet donors that it’s critically important to maintain a stable blood supply this spring to support those with chronic illnesses and other blood needs in the US. Blood t ransf usions remain one of the most critical treatments for patients like those living with sickle cell disease, the majority of whom are of African and Latin descent; and beta thalassemia major, which disproportionately affects those of Asian descent. Additionally, women who are Black are more likely than women who are white to experience severe postpartum hemorrhage, often requiring blood transfusion. Additionally, the Red Cross is screening all blood, platelet, and plasma donations from self-identified African American donors for the sickle cell trait. This added screening will provide Black donors with an additional health insight and help the Red Cross identify compatible blood types more quickly
to help patients with sickle cell disease. Blood transfusion is an essential treatment for those with sickle cell disease, and blood donations from individuals of the same race, ethnicity, and blood type have a unique ability to help patients fighting sickle cell disease. Donors can expect to receive antibody testing results and sickle cell trait screening results, if applicable, within one to two weeks. To help ensure all patients have access to the blood products they count on, donors are urged to make an appointment by downloading the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting www. redcrossblood.org, or calling 1-800-733-2767. Those who come to give through April 18 will receive an exclusive Red Cross t-shirt, while supplies last. Those who come to give April 19 through May 19 will receive a $10 e-gift card to a merchant of choice and will be automatically entered to win a new travel trailer-camper that sleeps eight, all courtesy of our partners at Suburban Propane. As a benefit to donors, the Red Cross provides vital health insights to help aid in awareness, prevention, early detection, and monitoring for better health outcomes. All presenting blood donors receive a free mini-health

screening with insights on pulse, blood pressure, and hemoglobin. Vital signs are recorded in the donor’s online profile where they can track and monitor their results via the donor app or on the Red Cross’s website and share the results with their health care provider. The Red Cross is also testing blood, platelet, and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The test may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to this coronavirus after vaccination or past exposure, regardless of whether they developed symptoms. Plasma from routine blood, platelet, and plasma donations that have high levels of COVID-19 antibodies may be used as convalescent plasma to meet potential future needs of COVID-19 patients with weakened immune systems. The Red Cross is not testing donors to diagnose infection, referred to as a diagnostic test. To protect the health and safety of Red Cross staff and donors, it is important that individuals who have been asked to quarantine or believe they may be ill with COVID-19 postpone donation until they are symptom-free for ten days and feeling well and healthy. Each Red Cross blood drive and donation center follows high standards of safety and infection control, and additional precautions – including face masks for donors and staff, regardless of vaccination status – have been

mobile centrifuge machines, which are used to spin blood samples. The goal of this service is to make lab testing more convenient and comfortable for individuals needing routine lab work. Cornerstone VNA currently serves York County, as well as Rockingham, Strafford, Belknap and Carroll Counties in NH. If an individual needs their blood drawn but cannot get to a lab site due to mobility issues or other factors, Cornerstone VNA will go to wherever they call home. For some people, an illness or disability can make it hard to travel, and some may simply want to avoid crowded outpatient labs, driving, and wait times. It is also the perfect service for individuals who may prefer the convenience and privacy of receiving care in their own home. In-home phlebotomy services can also help individuals with anxiety and needle phobia, or who have standing orders for repeat testing. The mobile phlebotomy program is a private-pay service, typically not covered by insurance. Also, a doctor’s order for routine labs is required, which can be sent directly to Cornerstone VNA. Upon receipt of a doctor’s order, Cornerstone will call the patient to schedule an appointment. A certified phlebotomist will go to the patient’s home and, once the blood specimen has been collected, the phlebotomist will use the mobile centrifuge to spin the sample, following all protocols for accurate handling, packaging, and delivery to the correct laboratory for processing. The results will be sent directly to the patient’s doctor’s office for review. Health & Fitness Benefits of Building a Strong Core Fitness professionals recognize the importance of a well-balanced workout. Much like a diet that includes foods from each of the major food groups can provide the balance of nutrients and vitamins bodies need to achieve optimal health, a workout routine that includes an assortment of strength and cardiovascular exercises is the recipe for a fit and healthy body. Core exercises are a vital component of a well-rounded workout. Core exercises can help individuals build sculpted abdominal muscles, and while that’s a goal for many core devotees, the benefits of core exercises extend well beyond the cosmetic. Build a strong, healthy back The International Association For the Study of Pain reports that lower back pain has been the leading cause of years lived with disability across the globe since 1990. Lower back pain can be debilitating, but core exercises strengthen muscles in the core, including those in the back. The Mayo Clinic notes that core exercises train muscles in the pelvis, lower back, hips, and abdomen to work together, creating greater balance and stability and contributing to a healthy back.
alize it, but their cores play a vital role in performing a great number of daily tasks. Core muscles are activated when doing everything from taking out the trash to getting dressed. If those muscles are weak, the cumulative effect of that weakness can add up and contribute to aches, pains and other health problems. Strong core muscles make daily tasks easier and less taxing on the body, providing both shortand long-term benefits. Become a better athlete Core training has long been
a key component of professional athletes’ exercise regimens, and it’s just as beneficial to amateur athletes as well. The Harvard Medical School notes that a strong core powers a host of athletic activities, including golf, tennis, cycling, running, swimming, and team sports like baseball and volleyball. A strong core also benefits outdoor enthusiasts who love to kayak and hike difficult terrain. Sculpt abdominals The cosmetic benefits of building a strong core should not be overlooked, as individuals might gain additional motivation to keep exercising and

FINANCE & CAREER Free Resources for Veterans & Spouses to Find Jobs STATEWIDE For many of the 8.3 million military veterans in the civilian workforce, transitioning into a career can be a difficult process. Even after securing a civilian job, veterans and their spouses often find themselves

employers to understand how your job skills, experience, and character transfer to a new position,” said Troy Broussard, senior adviser to AARP’s Veterans and Military Families Initiative. Despite the drop in veteran unemployment to 3.2 percent in December 2021, two-thirds of all veteran and active-duty spouses employed in the civilian sector say they are underemployed in some way, according to data from the Blue Star Families’ annual Military Lifestyle Survey. To help alleviate unemployment and underemployment in the veteran community, AARP created the Veteran and Military Spouses Job Center found online at www.campaigns.aarp.org/ veteran-job-center. “This free,
one-stop resource will help veterans and military spouses learn how to effectively leverage their military skills and experience to give them an edge in today’s competitive job market and avoid underemployment,” said Broussard. The center includes a suite of free resources to help find jobs, explore new career fields, get advice, take a job training course and more. Among the resources offered are: A A R P Job Board, on which veterans can search for employers who value military experience and how it applies to their industry. Use the “Veterans Wanted” filter to search for employers who are actively seeking applicants with a military background;
AARP Resume Advisor, from which veterans can get a free, expert review of how well their resume communicates their skills, and obtain personalized recommendations on how to make their resume stand out. Discounted writing packages are also available to help rewrite a resume, cover letter, or LinkedIn profile; Be Your Own Boss, outlining how many veterans have gone on to become successful entrepreneurs in civilian life. For those interested in starting a business or a side gig, AARP has compiled resources to help aspiring entrepreneurs take that step; Veteran Career Advantage Course, a free online class offered through MindEdge Learning including short videos of veterans sharing their firsthand experiences on topics such as resumes, networking, personal branding, and the common challenges veterans face; Veterans and Military Spouses Job Search Toolkit, with which veterans can learn how to translate military service, skills, and experience to the civilian workforce and jump-start a new career path.

Donna Francis D’Antilio, 68 WELLS – Donna Frances (Hill) D’Antilio of Wells, ME, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, surrounded by her
family. Born in Dover, NH, on November 11, 1953, she was the daughter of the late George and Antonia Hill and the youngest of her siblings, Kathryn and George. Donna graduated from Dover High School in 1971 and that same year married her high school sweetheart, Ronald Wade. They had two daughters, Jennifer and Jessica. On May 5, 2005, she married her love Steven D’Antilio and gained a daughter Leianne. Donna was a long time resident of Wells, residing in the community for decades. She worked for many years at Foster’s Daily Democrat and the Anchorage by the Sea from which she retired. Donna loved music and singing. It was more often than not that she was singing a jingle. She also loved drawing, classic sitcoms, soap operas, ghosthunter shows, warm sunny days on her swing, campfires, playing VR games, and spirituality.

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

day in our neighborhoods or a favorite sports personality who has become a super hero. The conversation now invariably has something to do with politics and the potential for disaster that seems to surround all of us. The other day my wife and I started to do some apartment shopping because we’ve reached the age where the upkeep of our home is becoming difficult. It’s not that we can’t do it, but we want to free up the time it takes in order to have more time together. My wife, who is an absolute expert on using the internet, came up with some apartment complexes surrounding the area we call home. This was a

bit of an adventure because we explored on a Sunday. We now know that everyone who helps with apartment searches don’t work on a Sunday. We didn’t care, because it was our first time out in order to get a feel for the possible. We drove using our GPS in order to find what was advertised. One let us down a very steep road and driveway that was literally under the Piscataqua Bridge. There is little chance I spelt that correctly. After about a half an hour trying to turn around, we followed the list my wife constructed and our GPS attempted to find. We saw complexes that were deep in the woods of places we never knew existed, complexes that had ‘Beware of Dogs’ signs larger than the sign advertising it’s name, and a couple of places that terrified us. Our last point of exploration was a large and well-kept apartment complex that did interest us. We had hoped to see the inside of an apartment but understood this was impossible . . . RENTALS WANTED Responsible professional COUPLE LOOKING FOR A 3 OR 4 BEDROOM HOME in York, Kittery, Eliot, or South Berwick. Very self sufficient, willing to do all maintenance ourselves. Both grew up in York and want to be close to family. No pets, non-smokers. Plenty of work and personal references as well as financial info if needed. $2200-2700 price range. because it was a Sunday. Turning our car around in order to leave, my wife noticed a woman getting out of her car. Surprisingly, my wife opened her window and asked if she lived at the complex? This surprised me because I never thought she would get the courage to do that. My wife and this stranger then started talking stating she did live in the complex and enjoyed being there. She then invited us into her apartment to see what it could be like living there. I was shocked. How could a person ask a total stranger up to her home to see what her apartment looked like? How could a person trust a stranger into her home? How could anyone be so thoughtful to people she had no idea as to who they were? We parked our car and followed her into the complex, at which time she gave us a full tour of what to expect if we decided to move there. She then talked about what it was like to live in the complex, what kind of people lived there, and described a little bit of whom she was. I let my wife walk with her while I talked to her children. She had two teenage young adults, one of which was joining the marines and the other finishing her time
at the high school. They were pleasant and respectful. They were brought up well. After about an hour, we thanked the woman for taking her time to help us out in order to decide what our future could be. Driving away we did not talk about personal finances, political issues, health concerns, or basic fears of what our future has in store for us. We talked about how nice people really were, and as we talked, I noticed the smile on my wife’s face that had to mirror the smile on mine. I wanted to roll down my mirror and yell out to the world that,” Yes, Virginia, there are nice people in our world!” Jim Fabiano is a retired teacher and writer living in York.
