Marking Earth Day at Wells Reserve WELLS Celebrate Earth Day a few days early at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm with an annual appreciation of nature, science, and the planet. Visit the reserve on Friday, April 19, for a family-friendly, free event co-hosted by the Wells Reserve and the Planeteers of Southern Maine. The heart of the celebration is an Earth Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. More than 30 organizations will be on hand, offering activities and information about wildlife, plants, water, energy, conservation, and much more. Loads of earthy crafts, games, and activities are lined up to keep kids busy and adults
amused. There will be music in the air, with Matt Loosigian, Scot Stinson, and Tony Michaud each performing a set of songs and tunes. Children’s book author Jean Flahive will inspire learning about the Earth through storytelling. Additional morning activities include a 2-hour bird walk led by York County Audubon at 8 a.m., a clean-up on Laudholm Beach at 9 a.m., and a docent-led nature walk at 11 a.m. Lunch will be offered for sale. The KK&W Water District will bring water bubblers and hand out reusable water bottles (while supplies last) to people who pledge to switch from single-use plastic bottles.
The event gains inspiration from science and, in particular, biologist and author Rachel Carson, who said, “The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction.” The simple query “What would Rachel do?” will inform many of the actions taken by exhibitors and attendees. The organizers are aiming for a zero-waste day. The Earth Fair receives key support from the Kennebunk Conservation Commission, Alternative Education students at Kennebunk High School, See EARTH page 4...

Diggs Places First in Tech Challenge WELLS In early March, the Wells-Ogunquit CSD School Committee recognized Emanuel (Manny) Diggs, a Wells High School 11th grade student also studying automotive technology at Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS) for placing first in the Universal Technical Institute’s Top Tech Challenge on February 9. Diggs and his teammate placed first among 36 two-person teams from New England competing in a demonstration of their automotive
