During all four years at Wells High School, Katie has been an active participant on the track and field team and earned a ‘Letterman’s Jacket’ in pole vault.

has received an award for “Stress Management through Yoga”.

In terms of community involvement, she not only volunteers at the local hospital, soup kitchens, and a homeless shelter but also serves as a teacher’s aide assisting youth in her church.

Town of York Declares Civil Emergency

YORK York Town Manager Stephen H. Burns signed a Town of York Declaration of Civil Emergency and Emergency Order on April 3.

On March 30, the Town Select Board ordered the Town Manager, Police Chief, and Health Officer, to draft an Emergency Proclamation and Related Orders for a stay-at-home order to assist with COVID-19 disease prevention, flattening the curve of the virus and allowing our health care system and first responders to deliver services in a staggered, non-critical effort.

Szeniawski has enacted the following Emergency Order: Town properties and facilities shall remain closed to the public which includes the Sohier Park, Mount Agamenticus, Harbor Beach Road, York Community Garden, Cliff Walk, Fishermen’s Walk, Wiggley Bridge and causeway, Strawberry Island, boat launch ramp on the York River under the Route 103 bridge, boat launch on the York River at Scotland Bridge, and all town and school playgrounds, athletic fields, tennis courts, and basketball courts. All public beaches have already closed by order of the Town Manager.

A unit may be occupied by medical/healthcare professionals, first responders, active duty military and their family, while serving the community in an essential service. A unit may be occupied by a household looking to remove themselves from a person testing positive for COVID-19, or as emergency shelter through an assistance program.

There shall be no transient or seasonal occupancy at campgrounds for the duration of this Emergency Order.

The Town recommends, on the strongest possible terms, that owners of seasonal homes and their invitees remain in the location of their primary residence until April 30. If owners move into their unit anyway, they are strongly encouraged to self-quarantine for at least 14 days from the date of arrival.

Any person, firm, or corporation, found to have violated this Emergency Order may be subject to a civil penalty of $100-250.

North Berwick Closes Playgrounds But Not Trails

MDOT Work Plan for State Bridge and Road Projects AUGUSTA Sen. Mark Lawrence, D-Eliot, is pleased to announce the details of Maine’s three-year transportation infrastructure work plan, and what it means for Senate District 35. The plan is released annually with an outline of the Maine Department of Transportation’s strategy for road, bridge and other transportation upgrades and maintenance projects.

“I’m glad York County roads and infrastructure will receive some necessary improvements,” said Sen. Lawrence.

“We know how much wear and tear our roads can get.”

According to the MDOT, the work plan covers approximately $2.59 billion worth of construction and maintenance, which includes 2,051 work items. The three-year plan estimates MDOT will invest in 171 miles of highway construction and rehabilitation; 858 miles of

pavement preservation; 1,800 miles of light capital paving for roads and highways; 170 safety and spot improvements; and 148 bridge projects.

The following breakdown is the planned capital and maintenance work for some communities in Senate District 35 (South Berwick, Eliot, York, Ogunquit, Kittery) in 2020:

Falls River, located on the South Berwick-Rollinsford, NH state line.

Bridge Rehabilitation

Federal Disaster Declaration For Maine Approved AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills recently announced on April 4 that the President has approved the State of Maine for a major disaster declaration, unlocking critical federal assistance for state agencies and municipalities in Maine.

The approval is specifically for public assistance, which means that state agencies and municipalities in all of Maine’s

16 counties will be reimbursed for 75 percent of approved costs associated with their COVID-19 response.

York Public Library Offers Online Access to Thousands of Magazines with New Digital Platform

YORK York Public Library announced a new partnership with Recorded Books, Inc. last week to offer free access to thousands of online magazines through a digital platform called RBdigital magazines.

It hopes to follow this service with additional platforms to “bring the library home” in a time when York residents cannot physically visit their public library due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“In-house, York Public Library has 55,000+ books, audiobooks, DVDs, magazines, and newspapers, and community members are unable to read or watch any of it,” said Michelle Sampson, Library Director.

“We had hoped to be able to offer curb-side pickup or dropand-run delivery services, but given the virus’s high level of con-

tagion and its lengthy viability on hard surfaces and paper, the Maine CDC and State Library have each advised against it,” she continued.

These restrictions prompted the staff to investigate alternative services to reach community members. According to 2018 estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, 90-93% of York residents have access to a computer as well as the internet. Given those high estimates, the library opted to invest in online content platforms that are widely used in other libraries, but that have been a stretch for its limited budget.

Tumblebooks, a new service geared to children, tweens, and teens, offers thousands of e-books and downloadable audiobooks.

WELLS This winter at the Wells Junior High School, eighth grade student Ryan Bingham received first place in the school-level or first round of competition in the 2019-2020 National Geographic GeoBee. After an exciting final round, Kaden Paswaters, also in eighth grade, placed second.

The ten-student contest, the final round of numerous class qualifying bees, took place before the school’s student body in the Ward Gymnasium.

“Well, I got the first question wrong so I was kind of expecting their jobs, had their hours cut, been furloughed, or watched investments take a nosedive, libraries can provide a free means of escape – if only for a little while,” said Sampson.

The new services, however, are not without cost and were not purchases the library had planned to make. Sampson identified some remaining gift monies and made the decision to re-allocate remaining funds from this fiscal year originally meant for books, audiobooks, DVDs, and magazine subscriptions. He added, “But I had no idea this would happen.” He candidly admitted that he did not know the answer to the deciding question but thought of a couple of likely answers and selected what turned out to be the correct response. “I kind of guessed and I got it right,” he said. “Social studies is my favorite class because geography is in it.” He added that he likes geography and reading National Geographic magazine, the official magazine of the National Geographic Society.

The other eight students who competed in the WJHS Bee were Olivia Boutot, Cole Gauthier, Sean Gilbert, Jackson Koh, Helen Lee, Jack McDevitt, Jacob Ouellet and Will Scott.

Social studies teacher Bonnie Dill was the Bee’s organizer and questioner. “It was great to have two fifth graders (and) two sixth graders in the top ten so we have some talent coming up,” said Dill who observed that the contest was topical at times. “You could see in the last few questions that paying attention to the current news helps students to answer the final questions.”

Others who assisted with the event included social studies teachers Susie Dugovic and Alison Le who were the contest judges. Teacher Dan MacLeod was the time keeper.

Each of the ten Bee contestants received a Toblerone candy bar and a small squishy globe to be a symbol of their knowledge of the World. Runner-up Will Scott and Bingham also received a National Geographic World Atlas. In addition, Bingham received a plush three-foot Antarctic penguin. “It was a great prize,” said Dill of the penguin. “The kids were excited about it.”

To proceed to the state level of the National Geographic GeoBee, Bingham will need to complete a written test created by the National Geographic Society.

He then will be invited to attend the State Bee to be held at the University of Maine at Farmington in late March. All winners of the various state bees are then eligible to compete in the National Geographic GeoBee in Washington, D.C. May 17-21.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Virtual Volunteers Help Historical Society KENNEBUNKPORT With people sequestering at home during the pandemic, the Kennebunkport Historical Society’s Archivist Sharon Cummins saw an opportunity to engage local history buffs. In March she put out a call looking for “virtual

volunteers” interested in transcribing handwritten records which can be difficult to read.

The response was overwhelming. Every day, Cummins emails scanned pages from notebooks in the archives to nearly 20 volunteers who are creating typewrit-

OMAA’s New Executive Director OGUNQUIT David Mallen, President of the Board of the Ogunquit Museum of American Art (OMAA) recently announced that Amanda Lahikainen, PhD, has been appointed as the museum’s new Executive Director, effective May 1. The board unanimously approved the appointment on March 23.

Dr. Lahikainen is currently Chair of the Art Department and a tenured Associate Professor of Art History at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI, where she oversees the art gallery. She holds a PhD in art history from Brown University and a BA from Wellesley College.

She oversaw and co-curated exhibitions at her college gallery and the Bell Gallery at Brown University, and has worked with local museums in Grand Rapids including the Grand Rapids Art Museum and the Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. She held the Kluge Fellowship at the Library of Congress in 2012 and has attracted grants and fellowships from the Paul Mellon Centre and the Lewis Walpole Library at Yale University. She

Kittery Town Fees Altered

Global Activist Teams Up to Help Italy During Pandemic ITALY / OGUNQUITGlobal health activist Donato Tramuto, in partnership with Kerry Kennedy, President of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Italia (RFKHRI), is leading an international effort to support Italy’s frontline medical workers as they battle the COVID-19 pandemic that has impacted every region of that country.

Tramuto has enlisted support from his two non-profits, Health eVillages, an international medical technology organization and the Maine-based Tramuto Foundation, in partnership with RFKHRI, to launch the RFK Italy Coronavirus Emergency Fund campaign with an initial pledge of $55,000.

ness owner in Ogunquit, owns a home in Florence, Italy, and maintains his Italian citizenship. “The tragedy in Bergamo and beyond is unbearable,” he said. “I called a friend, who is also a teacher there, and she told me that everyone has lost someone – a friend or a relative. The cemeteries are full, corpses are brought outside the city by the Italian Army and stocked in a common area to be cremated, not buried. People are dying alone. They go to the hospital and families don’t receive news for days or weeks and cannot see them. Doctors haven’t the time to inform families. It is such a tragedy.”

Lighthouse Nazarene Welcomes New Pastors to Church WELLS Thirty-six years after first meeting at the Lighthouse Church of the Nazarene on Route 1 (544 Post Road) in Wells, Jim and Debbie Ennis were recently installed as full time co-pastors.

On January 1, 1984, Debbie attended the church for the first time with her two young children. “From the minute I walked into the church, it just felt like home,” said Debbie, who drove 27 miles from Milton, NH, to attend. One month later a ministerial student, Jim Ennis, led a youth retreat weekend and preached to a packed church on Sunday. Jim and Debbie remember meeting that day, and though it wasn’t love at first sight, they were married in Berwick nearly three years later. Life eventually took them to Canada, New Jersey, and then Massachusetts, where they had lived since 1996 before moving to Wells.

Returning to Wells, a place that they have visited every summer, and is rich with memories for the Ennis family, Jim

and Debbie’s story has come full circle. This pastoral couple return to the Lighthouse Church with years of rich life experience, each in their own right. In addition to pastoral experience, they are both trained Spiritual Directors who have been leading spiritual retreats for many years, overseen Recovery and Soul Care ministry, and much more.

They both are currently working toward a MA in Spirituality at Merrimack College in Andover, MA. They are committed to making recovery and spirituality priorities in their ministry at the Lighthouse Church.

Gerenz Named New NSCC Comptroller

When the couple’s colleague, Chan Weller, left Sugarbush and became the Discovery Map franchisor—it was then called Resort Maps—Sam and Ann leapt at the opportunity to own a map.

“When we first started out, Sam worked the business fulltime and I kept my day job as a sign language interpreter at a local school and helped out parttime,” said Ann. “But we saw the first map take off and jumped at the opportunity to expand.”

The Douglasses are active in their Chamber of Commerce and the community with events like York Harvestfest. The couple has volunteered their fry-o-laters and their services to making French fries for the 20,000-plus that attend the annual event.

Adds Sam, “There, we’re not the map people but the French fry guys.”

You would then click on the “Startup” tab and go through the list of processes that automatically startup when Windows starts.

You can safely disable most of these items, then restart your computer and see if it helps with the problems you are having. I would not disable your security software, as that is what keeps you safe from viruses and malware. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I just bought a new laptop and it has Windows 10 loaded.

Your Windows 10 computer still has Internet Explorer (IE). You can find it by clicking on the “Start” icon and then type “Internet Explorer” to search for it.

Once you have found and opened IE, you can save a link on your taskbar by right-clicking on the IE icon, then click “Pin To Taskbar” in the context menu. two email products that use the name, Outlook, and both of them work with Windows 10.

First, there is Outlook that is part of the Microsoft Office suite. I have installed this for several customers and it works great. This version of Outlook is not free, you can purchase it as part of some versions of the Microsoft Office suite, or you can purchase it as a single program.

Second is the free, online email offered by Microsoft, Outlook.com.

Outlook.com used to be hotmail, but it was purchased

by Microsoft and they have turned it into an online suite complete with a calendar and online office tools. You can access these tools by clicking on the icon in the upper-left that looks like a grid of squares.

I have not noticed check marks in my regular documents, just the OneDrive folders. This would mean that...

1. You have a Microsoft account, and you are logged into your computer with your Microsoft account.

2. You have OneDrive set up on your computer (it is automatically set up in Windows 10).

3. You are storing your files in the OneDrive folders.

What this does for you is, it allows you to synchronize your files across several computers. It also serves as an automatic cloud backup for the files that are stored in the OneDrive folders.

You should notice that when you make changes to files in the OneDrive folder, or add new files, there will be a yellow check mark until your computer has finished uploading the new version of the files. Health & Fitness Twenty Signs of Stress Stress affects so many people and infiltrates so many parts of daily life that it can be tempting to write it off as harmless or just a normal part of being human. But the negative effects of stress are significant, and persons who can recognize that are in a good position to find healthy ways to cope with their stress.

The American Psychological Association notes that stress can take a considerable toll on a person’s mind and body.

Chronic stress, which is a constant stress experienced over a prolonged period of time, can increase the risk of hypertension, heart attack or stroke. In addition, the APA notes that chronic stress causes the muscles in the body to be in an essentially constant state of guardedness, which can potentially contribute to tension-type headache and migraines. And these are just two of the many ways the body is adversely affected by stress, which the APA says also has been linked to problems with the gastrointestinal system, nervous system and reproductive system.

Since stress can contribute to such unpleasant and potentially life-threatening side effects, it’s important that people from all walks of life learn to recognize the warning signs of stress. The American Institute of Stress lists the following among its 50 most common signs and symptoms of stress: 1. Frequent headaches, jaw clenching or pain 2. Gritting, grinding teeth 3. Stuttering or stammering 4. Tremors, or trembling of lips or hands 5. Neck ache, back pain and/or muscle spasms 6. Light headedness, faintness and/or dizziness

7. Ringing, buzzing or popping sounds 8. Frequent blushing or sweating 9. Cold or sweaty hands, feet 10. Dry mouth and/or problems swallowing 11. Frequent colds, infections and/or herpes sores 12. Rashes, itching, hives, and/or “goose bumps” 13. Unexplained or frequent “allergy” attacks 14. Heartburn, stomach pain and/or nausea 15. Excess belching and/or flatulence 16. Stimulus Checks for Social Security Beneficiaries Also WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the Chairman of the Aging Committee, recently announced that Social Security beneficiaries will not be required to file a tax return in order to receive a rebate check under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The IRS will instead base a rebate on the information provided in Form SSA1099, Social Security Benefit Statement or Form RRB-1099, Social Security Equivalent Benefit Statement.

“Seniors are already experiencing a time of great stress and uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This change removes an unnecessary, bureaucratic hurdle that will help ensure they receive the rebate they are entitled to,” said Senator Collins.

The CARES Act, which was signed into law on March 27, provides tax rebates of

$1,200 to individuals and $2,400 for married couples. The checks begin phasing out for single filers with incomes exceeding $75,000 and $150,000 for joint filers.

IRS guidance originally indicated that individuals who do not typically file tax returns, including many seniors who receive Social Security benefits, would need to file a simple tax return to receive a stimulus check.

YORK COUNTY Coronavirus is a family of viruses found in some animals which can, in rare cases, be transmitted to humans, then spread person to person. The current outbreak is not a reason to fear animals, but a wake-up call to practice basic infection control everywhere, including barns and equestrian facilities.

Dr. Niels Pedersen, a distinguished emeritus professor at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and a renowned expert on infectious and immunologic diseases in dogs and cats, addressed the question, “Can pets contract coronavirus from humans or vice versa?”

The simple answer is “No, you won’t get or give the coronavirus to your family pet. Coronaviruses occur in virtually every species of animal, including humans, and are commonly associated with unapparent or transient intestinal and respiratory infections. They tend to be very species specific and crossspecies transmission is uncommon.”

Viral transmission may affects species differently but transmission of illness is similar. As with people, horses can be infected through contact with those who handle them. Coronavirus affects the respiratory system in humans causing a variety of symptoms like the standard flu. In horses, the digestive system is compromised.

BlixxHorses encourages public and private facilities to learn more and practice good infection control to protect humans and horses alike. Barns need hot and cold water available to wash hands as well as sanitizer. Keep in mind that younger children are more inclined to explore with their hands, so they need to learn good habits such as how to use sanitizer correctly. Limit what you touch, and what touches your horse. It’s never a good idea to share bits or brushes. Items should be cleaned after each use.

The time spent practicing good hygiene does not mean less time with your horse, but a safer and healthier environment.

Edward J. Bailey, 85 NORTH BERWICK – Edward J. Bailey Sr. of Ocala, FL, formally of North Berwick, passed away on April 1, 2020 after a short illness.

Known by his friends as Red, he was born in Lowell, MA, on July 31, 1934 to Harry and Marion Bailey.

Red graduated from Lowell High School in 1953 and served in the US Navy aboard the USS Macon. He

Soon after, Red and Rita built their dream home on Wilson Lake in Acton, where they enjoyed many happy times with their children, grandchildren, and friends. Two years ago they moved to Ocala, FL, where he was able to spend time with his brother.

Red loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing, as well as going to yard sales and flea markets. He was a jack-of-alltrades and always available to help anyone who needed an extra hand.

He is survived by his beloved wife or 63 years, Rita (Roy) Bailey, as well as his three sons, Brian and wife Doreen of South Berwick, Kevin of Seabrook, NH, and Edward Jr. and wife, Heidi of York. He also leaves his brother John and his wife Judith of Ocala, FL, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth.

As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words.

Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief.

In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service.

Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased.

Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.

The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering.

The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering.

Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies.

The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual.

Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased.

He is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Jean (Wright); daughters Julie (Hubbard) and husband Dale, Jodie (Walsh) and husband Jonathan; grandchildren Lydia Lehoux and husband Michael, Mitchell Perkins, Jackson and Jonathan Walsh; great-grandchildren Elouise, Emelia, and Everett Lehoux; sister Joan; and many nieces and nephews.

Jack grew up in Moody Beach. He was a 1957 graduate of Wells High School. Jack was a self-employed General Contractor for over fifty years. He had a tireless work ethic and never retired. Jack was honest, knowledgeable, and reliable in his job. He forged many close relationships and lifelong friendships with those he did work for, from business owners to local and seasonal residents alike. Many of these relationships span generations.

Jack was known for his sarcastic humor and truly enjoyed the banter with his buddies, especially while playing golf and cribbage. Jack will be dearly remembered by his family and close friends for his special knack and love of caring for babies and young children. He treasured time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A private graveside ceremony followed by a celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.

Larry M. Wick, 58 NORTH BERWICK – Larry M. Wick of Randall Road passed away peacefully March 31, 2020, in Massachusetts General Hospital after complications from surgery.

Larry was born September 25, 1961 in Rochester, NH, son of Merritt and Sandra (Thompson) Wick. Larry graduated from Noble High School in 1980.

Growing up in the family business, he spent his entire life as a motorhead; working on his buddies’ cars after school and on the weekends. He worked for his folk’s business, Wick’s Automotive, and began his own shop, Larry’s Automotive. Larry was a good and honest hard-working man who would’ve given the shirt off his back to help anyone.

He was available day or night to come give you a tow, an inspection sticker, or whatever else you may need.

When he wasn’t working on cars, he could be found in the sawmill, cutting firewood, working the farm, tending to the cows, driving a tractor, or getting the hay cut and ready for the winter. Most of the time, he could be found hanging out in his garage with all his amazing buddies around him.

In his younger years, he could do burnouts with the best of them, knew all the backroads to get away, and where all the best pit parties were. Larry had a passion for antique cars and had a nice collection of his own.
