About St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations and Traditions Saint Patrick's Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick is a cultural and religious celebration held on March, 17, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick (c. AD 385461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick's Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century and is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Lutheran Church. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Today's St. Patrick's Day celebrations have been greatly influenced by those that developed among the Irish population, especially in North America. Until the late 20th century, St. Patrick's Day was often a bigger celebration among the diaspora (scattered population) than it was in Ireland. While not a legal holiday in the United States, St. Patrick’s

Day is, nonetheless widely recognized and observed throughout the country as a celebration of Irish and Irish-American culture. Celebrations include prominent displays of the color green, religious observances, numerous
parades, and copious consumption of alcohol. The holiday has been celebrated in North America since the late 18th century. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, cĂŠilithe (Irish traditional music sessions), and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. There are also formal gatherings such as banquets and dances, although these were more common in the past. St. Patrick's Day parades began in North America in the 18th century but did not spread to Ireland until the 20th century. The participants generally include marching bands, the military, fire brigades, cultural and charitable organizations, voluntary associations, youth groups, fraternities, and so on. However, over time, many of the parades have become more akin to a carnival. More effort is made to use the Irish language;

YORK First Parish Church’s Mission Team will host its third opportunity to spend a morning sewing simple dresses for girls in need around the world. The Sew-a-Thon will take place in First Parish Church’s Fellowship Hall, 180 York St., York on Saturday March 25 from 9 a.m.-noon. their only dress, to girls who are often overlooked, abused, and unprotected. The gift is a reminder that they are worthy of love. Each dress has the organization’s logo sewn to the front of the skirt. Clothing the girls not only provides protection from the elements and predators, it also gives them a sense of dignity and self-worth and the opportunity to attend school. Bring a friend, a daughter, or a granddaughter or grandson, your portable sewing machine (if possible), cotton fabric/notions if you have any to donate contribute. ~ News ~ Saving the Purple Martin YORK COUNTY Purple Martins are beloved birds. They are known as harbingers of spring, arriving in Maine in mid-April as a most welcome sign of the changing seasons. They are aerial acrobats known for their great speed and agility in flight, and when approaching their housing, they will dive from the sky at great speeds with their wings tucked. But their numbers have been dramatically reduced as European Starlings and House Sparrows have successfully competed with them for nesting cavities. Throughout the Eastern United States, many people have been working to support and strengthen their nesting colonies. In 2013, Purple Martins were discovered nesting in a small birdhouse in a Hampton, New Hampshire marsh. The following year, a group of Audubon volunteers placed a gourd rack on town land nearby. Since then, that Martin colony has grown and now serves as a model for York County Audubon to emulate. Dennis Skillman is a member of Seacoast/ New Hampshire Audubon, and
STARKEY FORD IS THE AREA’S EXCLUSIVE:
FORD FACTORY WHOLESALE OUTLET has been at the center of their work to expand the colony there. On Tuesday, March 21, York County Audubon will host his program on the success they’ve had, which has yielded a colony filled to capacity with over 40 young fledglings. The program will be at 7 p.m. in the Mather Auditorium at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm. York County Audubon programs are free and open to all. Purple Martins only nest in colonies, and are notoriously finicky about their choice of sites.

especially in Ireland, where the week of St. Patrick's Day is "Irish language week". Recently, famous landmarks have been lit up in green on St. Patrick's Day. Christians also attend church services[5][7] and the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day. Perhaps because of this, drinking alcohol – particularly Irish whiskey, beer or cider – has become an integral part of the celebrations. The St. Patrick's Day custom of “drowning the shamrock or “wetting the shamrock was historically popular, especially in Ireland. It is then drunk as a toast; to St. Patrick, to Ireland, or to those present. The shamrock would either be swallowed with the drink, or be taken out and tossed over the shoulder for good luck. On St. Patrick's Day it is customary to wear shamrocks and/or green clothing or accessories (the "wearing of the green"). St. Patrick is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish. The colour green has been associated with Ireland since at

least the 1640s, when the green harp flag was used by the Irish Catholic Confederation. Green ribbons and shamrocks have been worn on St. Patrick's Day since at least the 1680s.[24] The Friendly Brothers of St. Patrick, an Irish fraternity founded in about 1750,[25] adopted green as its colour. During the 1790s, green would become associated with Irish nationalism, due to its use by the United Irishmen. The wearing of the 'St Patrick's Day Cross' was also a popular custom in Ireland until the early 20th century. These were a Celtic Christian cross made of paper that was "covered with silk or ribbon of different colours, and a bunch or rosette of green silk in the centre." Reference: Wikipedia.com.

~ News ~ OBHS Lecture: The Communications Frontier in Early New England SOUTH BERWICK An era when news in New England was carried through both Native American and English networks, and rumors could produce shivers of fear, will be the subject of a talk presented by the Old Berwick Historical Society (OBHS). Dr. Katherine Grandjean will discuss her recent book, “American Passage, and shed new light on the subject of early communication and its impact on the settlement of New England. The event will be held at the Berwick Academy Arts Center in South Berwick on Thursday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Donations are gratefully accepted. “In the colonial world, news was currency. But it was often unreliable, said Nina Maurer, consulting curator for Old Berwick Historical Society.
“Communication is an underlying theme of our lecture series, and communication between the first immigrants to our region and indigenous people is a focus of our upcoming exhibit, Forgotten Frontier. The world of communication in early colonial New England's was often dark and confused, said Maurer. Grandjean draws on surviving letters and stories from early New England and the Piscataqua to explore the role of communication in colonization. Grandjean is Assistant Professor of History at Wellesley College. Her research explores the North American encounter between colonial and indigenous peoples, as well as the history of American violence. She is the author of numerous articles on war, encounter, and print culture in early America. “American
Passage (Harvard University Press, 2015) is her first book. Preceding the lecture, Berwick Academy is holding an opening reception for the new exhibit, Weaving Community, an exhibit of Native American baskets by artists of the Wabanaki Nations, at 6:00 p.m. in
the Jackson Library Gallery, on the second floor of the Jackson Library building at the center of campus. The exhibit is a collection of baskets from the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, local gallery owners, and area collectors. More information is available at www.oldberwick.org.

Zentangle Drawing Program Begins at YAA YORK Take a creative break and join Joyce Amend, Zentangle teacher and artist, this Saturday, March 18 from 10-11:30 a.m. for a bit of relaxing fun. Joyce will provide a drawing pen kit and paper for those who are just starting out at $10 each. There is also a sign-up fee of $10. The monthly program will be held at York Art Association (YAA), 394 York Street. Register at 207363-4049 or info@yorkartassociation.com. Open to everyone! Zentangles are miniature drawings of abstract art, created through a very specific method from an ensemble of simple, structured patterns called tangles on a 3.5-inch square paper tile. Zentangles are not only exquisitely beautiful; they are fun and relaxing to create. No drawing ability is required. The process of creating a Zentangle is a form of “artistic meditation” as one becomes
completely engrossed in making each pattern, deliberately focusing on “one stroke at a time”®. The creativity options and pattern combinations are boundless. And anyone can do it! The Zentangle Method “increases focus and creativ-
ity, provides artistic satisfaction along with an increased sense of personal well being.” YAA is a nonprofit organization bringing the arts to all in the York and surrounding areas. Visit www.yorkartassociation . com for more programs.
set design, choreography, and, of course, acting and singing. The curtain opens for the musical in the Ward Gymnasium at Wells Junior High School on Thursday, March 23 and Friday, March 24 at 7 p.m. There will also be a matinee performance on Saturday, March 25 at 2 p.m. “Their dedication and perseverance has brought this show to life with finesse and accurate
silliness”, said Director Perkins. Also helping with the show are Lauren Rivera, Asst. Director; Lisa White, Musical Director; Chris Milliken, Set Designer; and Jo-Ann Bazata, Costumer. This version of Alice in Wonderland is a children’s operetta and musical adventure. Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s original dream adventure, it’s a quasi-operatic theatrical production that brings to life the surrealistic and fantastical atmosphere of this universally beloved story. The music style ranges from pop to opera which helps tell this musical adventure with humor, drama and emotional power. The stage adaption by Heather M. Dominick and Michael Sirotta holds true to Carroll’s original story unlike any other production for the stage. Alice will take you in hand to fall down the rabbit hole, join the Tea party, paint the roses red and, listen closely for original verses written by Carroll himself. FMI: 207-646-5142. All seats are $5.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, I have never backed up my computer; what method do you recommend on how to do this? And once done, what is a good way (If hard drive crashes) to reinstate what has been backed up? Also, how often do you recommend backing up ones hard drive? Thanks for all you do to help us. Jean Dear Jean, If you are using Windows 7 or newer, your computer actually comes with a fairly good backup program. You can access it in the control panel. To access the backup program, right-click on the start button, and click on "Control Panel". In the Control Panel, click on "System and Security" then click on "Backup and Restore." From there, you can click "Create a system image" to create a complete backup of your entire system at this moment. You can create a system repair disk which will allow you to start the computer in the event you need to use your system image. Or, you can setup a backup plan for your data files. When you click "Set up backup" it will walk you through setting up that plan. To answer the question of how often to backup, you should create a system image and repair disk once every 6 to 12 months. You should backup your data as often as you need to. If you only add or edit files once a month, then backup once a month. If you create or edit files every week,
then set your data backup to run once a week. If you spend long hours working on your computer every day, then backup at the end of each day. How to reinstate your backup depends on what went wrong with the computer, and you might need the help of a professional. The important thing is that you have a backup for them to use to put your information back on the computer. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I frequently see a pop-up on my screen: “Registry Power Cleaner by Winferno Software Is this safe to click on and use? What is its purpose? Thanks, Jean Dear Jean, The program might be safe to use, (it also could cause your computer to crash) but you really don't need it. The registry is a big database of settings that your computer needs to run. If you, or a program you choose to run, make the wrong changes to your registry, it could cause your computer to crash, or just not run. Most of the time these cleaning programs are just trying to get your money, they don't really do anything that is going to make a difference in the speed or stability of your computer. The fact that you have this popping up on your screen makes me wonder if you have some advertising malware in your computer. You might want to get that checked out by either bringing it to your

Cleaning out Malware is much more important and will speed up your computer. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I love your newsletter. I have a question, on something I have never run into before. I keep getting this message that says low disk space. This in referring to my D drive, I have restored the computer to factory, and it made no difference. Is there any way I can correct this? Thank you so much for your many years of help. Miriam Dear Miriam, I am going to take a guess here since I can't actually see your computer and how it is set up. On most computers, the D: drive is either a CD or DVD drive, or a section of your hard drive that contains your recovery files. If the D: drive is indeed a recovery partition, it is just big enough
to hold your recovery files, and nothing else. When I get computers in the shop because they are getting the same message as you are getting, it is usually because they are trying to store files, or do a backup to the D: drive. If that is the case for you, what you need to do is save your files on the C: drive, and make sure your backup program is backing up to an external drive, not the D: drive. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have Windows 7 Professional. Sometimes I want to rearrange the pictures in my own order in a folder. When I had Win XP I could do that by dragging the pictures around with my mouse. However, in Win 7, it won't allow me to move the pictures around so they will stay. If I right click in the picture folder, it says I may sort them by Name, Date, Type, Size, and Tags, and other parameters. However, I usually don't want to sort ALL of them a certain way – I just want to move one picture closer to another that is a similar looking picture and have

I am especially delighted to be here with the national and Maine leaders of the VFW Auxiliary. Each of you, through your service to our nation in uniform and to our veterans through this
great organization, makes me proud to be an advocate for veterans as well as a life member of the VFW Post in my hometown of Caribou. “Out of all of the awards that I have received, this one is particularly special to me, Senator Collins continued. “As many VFW and Auxiliary members from Maine know, my father is a WWII veteran who was wound-

Dear Brian, Unfortunately, there is no way to rearrange your pictures by dragging and dropping. Really, the only way you can do this is to re-name the image files, then sort them by name. I would suggest that if you want to move one picture closer to another, rename the picture you want to go after another one, give it the same name as the first, but with an extra letter or number at the end. For example, if you have a list of pictures named, pic001, pic002, pic 003 and so on, and you want pic015 to show up right after pic003, right-click on pic015 and rename it pic003b. Once you have renamed it, the picture will be arranged right after pic003. Hopefully, this will help you. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Visit askthecomputerlady.com.

ed twice in the Battle of the Bulge. He earned a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. It was from him that I learned to honor and respect our veterans. Commander Duffy described in considerable detail Senator Collins’ distinguished record that led the VFW to bestow the organization's Congressional Award on her. He said the Senator's presence and leadership on the Appropriations Committee, including the subcommittees responsible for defense and veterans spending, as well as the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, Armed Services, and Intelligence Committees, helped to support veterans and safeguard the country. He also commended Senator Collins’ efforts to secure passage of critical quality of life programs, such as extended TRICARE coverage, military pay increases, and more community-based outpatient clinics, programs which uphold the highest ideals and principles of the VFW. This year, the VFW and Auxiliary is taking on the challenge of mental health among veterans and increasing support for women veterans, issues Senator Collins has long championed. Senator Collins is working with the VFW on a bill to improve access to VA preventive care, the Veterans Preventive Health Coverage Fairness Act. Ensuring our veterans receive preventive care, in the same manner as is currently provided by the Department of Defense, can not only cut medical costs down the line by preventing disease and disability, but also maintains the health and well-being of veterans.

Life Care Planning – How to Have Conversations with your Family and Physicians YORK One of the most important conversations you may ever have can seem like the most difficult. Talking about
dying, and sharing your wishes for future healthcare isn’t easy, but it is vitally important. York Hospital is pleased to partner with The Conversation Project
8 Steps That Can Lead You to a More Fulfilling Life There’s a reason people love the start of a New Year – or the first day of spring, or maybe the first day of school. The idea of a clean slate– of making changes or starting over fresh–can be exhilarating. “It isn’t necessarily that you don’t like the life you live,â€? says John C. Neyland, author of 'How to Live the Life You’ve Yet to Dream.' “It’s just that you suspect there’s something you’re missing–something more fulfilling.â€? The truth is, those possibilities are always within your reach, Neyland says. “But to have the life you want means you have to change course.â€? Here are some ways to make that turn in your life, using what Neyland refers to as “pivotsâ€?: • Put fear in its place and understand it. Fear has no power unless you lend it power. It doesn’t change the end result, and often it causes more damage than whatever it was you were so worried about. Neyland suggests you think about the biggest fear you’ve ever had. What was the outcome and did you recover? Chances are you came out the other end just fine. • Courage is not the lack of fear but going forward in the face of it. Courage is like exercise: The more you use it, the easier it becomes–and the more you benefit. We are taught to avoid pain and danger. You have to choose to face life with courage–but in the end, it’s how you handle fear and how you respond to it that can change your course. • Compromise is a dirty word. It can steal your life and dreams. To work for or spend time with someone who doesn’t share your values is a compromise, Neyland says, and compromise robs your energy and affects your momentum. • There is great value in having mentors. It’s less painful and more efficient to learn from the mistakes and successes of others: a family member, teacher or business leader you admire. Learn from them and
emulate them in your everyday life. • Dream without restraint. Thinking about what you want to do only in the context of what you know you can do is more of a nightmare than a dream. Pursue your goals with all you have. Don’t be concerned with failing. “The journey and the struggle can be extremely satisfying,â€? Neyland says. “It rivals the attainment of a goal. • Be honest with yourself. See STEPS page 15...

Health & Fitness Ready for a Mommy Makeover? Finding the Right Plastic Surgeon
Motherhood may be a source of joy and fulfillment for many women, but the pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding that come along with it can be downright unkind to their once shapely bodies. That’s why some women treat themselves and their physiques to a “mommy makeover, which depending on the individual mother, can mean a tummy tuck, liposuction, breast augmentation or other
procedure aimed at restoring an uncooperative figure to premotherhood form. “No two women will have the same desires or concerns, says Dr. Michael Burgdorf, founder of Music City Plastic Surgery and author of “The Mommy Makeover: Restoring Your Body After Childbirth. “It’s a very personal and individual decision. I like to help my patients dream a little about what they would like their re-

sults to be. But before it ever reaches that point, anyone seeking a mommy makeover needs to find a plastic surgeon right for the job – and right for them. “Certainly, you want someone who knows what they’re doing, but you also need to feel comfortable with that person because there’s a lot of trust involved, Burgdorf says. He suggests any woman in search of someone to perform her mommy

Life Care Planning: A York Hospital Free Lecture How to have a conversation as a family about life care planning Thursday, March 23 from 4:30-6:00 pm • York Harbor Inn, 480 York Street, York Harbor “Dine and Dialogue,â€? presented by Harriet Warshaw, Executive Director, The Conversation Project Join us for guidance about having life conversations with loved ones to find answers to: ¡ How do you want to live at the end of your life? ¡ How can you express your values, hopes and priorities if faced with a life-limiting illness? Light fare and refreshments will be provided. The program is free of charge, but space is limited and reservations are required. makeover should: • Find out if the surgeon is board certified. People often confuse cosmetic surgeons with plastic surgeons, but the two aren’t interchangeable. All plastic surgeons are cosmetic surgeons, but the reverse isn’t always true, Burgdorf says. Board-certified plastic surgeons must meet numerous criteria, including five years of residency training in all areas of surgery with at least two of those years in plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgeons can have any specialty, such as OB/GYN or emergency medicine, and may have just taken a short course in cosmetic surgery. “You wouldn’t want me delivering your baby, and you wouldn’t want an OB/ GYN doing your tummy tuck,â€? Burgdorf says. • Research the surgeon’s experience. It’s best to find a plastic surgeon who has dealt with issues at least as complex as yours – and preferably more complex. Burgdorf suggests browsing websites in search of a doctor whose style makes you feel the most comfortable. You might be able to get an idea of how the doctor speaks to patients by reading what’s on their website. Also, look at before-and-after pictures of the surgeon’s work to see if there are patients with similar characteristics as you. • Seek references. You can read online patient reviews, but it’s even better if you’re able to speak with former patients, Burgdorf says. If the surgeon is hesitant to allow this, you might want to look for another doctor. • Schedule an initial consultation. This is the opportunity to get to know the plastic surgeon face-to-face and develop a feel for how he or she works. Ask about anything you want, including the surgeon’s experience, edu-
cation and the cost. If you’re not feeling a good connection, you might want to interview other doctors. “Patients often talk with several doctors before making a decision, Burgdorf says. Choosing the right surgeon is one of the most important decisions in the mommymakeover process, Burgdorf says. “It can seem confusing at first, he says, “but if you take your time and become an informed patient, you should be able to make the right choice. Dr. Michael Burgdorf, author of “The Mommy Makeover: Restoring Your Body After Childbirth (www.drmichaelburgdorf.com), is a boardcertified plastic surgeon and founder/president of Music City Plastic Surgery in Nashville. He earned his undergraduate degree from Notre Dame, where he played football. He attended medical school at Tulane University in New Orleans and stayed there for his surgical residency. After Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Burgdorf and his family moved to Mississippi where he completed his plastic surgery residency at the University of Mississippi in Jackson.

5 Actions For Surviving the Business Storm Cycle Every business goes through cycles. They get started. They expand – sometimes rapidly. They decline. They consolidate. But if they’re not careful

firm Triumphus and author of “Surviving the Business Storm Cycle: How to Weather Your Business’s Ups and Downs.” In fact, about half of all new businesses don’t make it to their fifth birthday, according to the Small Business Administration. Essentially, those startups stalled out. Maybe the reason was too little capital. Maybe it was a faulty marketing plan. Sometimes the reason may be that the technology crucial to any business’ success simply couldn’t meet the always-evolving challenges the business faced. “Transitioning from startup to successful enterprise is always going to be a difficult undertaking,” Hopson says. “But that’s going to be even more so if your company hits an
exciting growth phase and your back office fails to keep up.” As they try to make sure their businesses survive, Hopson says it’s critical that company leaders keep these key points in mind: • Professionalize the back office and IT. That will keep your systems predictable and your IT ready to expand and adapt to the next phase the business faces. “And I don’t care what business you’re in,” Hopson says. “Information technology is your company’s backbone.” • Technology alone isn’t the answer, though. Successful ongoing transformation of a business depends on not just technology, but people and processes as well. Each must be fully integrated with the other

two. When you leave out one, Hopson says, your business’s functions are no longer healthy, effective, and productive—and you may not be able to survive the transition points on the business cycle. He developed an “IT survival quiz” to help business leaders assess how well they’re doing on this score. • Keep employees informed and engaged. It’s part of a leader’s role to let people know where the company is in the business cycle, and to educate, encourage, and inspire them to use each phase as productively as possible, from startup, to rapid growth, to deceleration and back again. • Don’t stand still. The “business storm cycle” will drive you to constantly reinvent yourself as a company. If you fail to recognize that the status quo won’t last forever, the market will leave you behind. • Be prepared for a “tornado.” Periods of high growth – which Hopson calls “tornados” – are caused by a new product, a new market, a new merger, or a technology breakthrough. “Companies that understand the characteristics of all the phases a business will go through are less likely to be caught unawares by these hyper-growth phases,” he says. “They know how to make one of these growth phases last as long as possible so they can get all the profits they can out of it.” Although it can sound like he’s sounding a dire warning, Hopson says with the right planning businesses can survive those “tornados” and thrive. When you do, take a deep breath and relax, he says – but not for too long. “Eventually, a new tornado will come along,” Hopson says, “and you will go through the entire cycle all over again.” Dave Hopson, author of “Surviving the Business Storm Cycle: How to Weather Your Business’s Ups and Downs” (www.davehopson.com), is the managing partner at Triumphus, which offers IT consulting services to companies from startup through exponential growth to IPO. He has a doctorate in international relations and econometrics from the Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management and School of Social Science, Policy & Evaluation at the Claremont Graduate School. Hopson also served in the Marine Corps.

BUSINESS & FINANCE Your Relationship with Money Should I buy it, or shouldn’t I? Do I have enough; how much is enough? Should I conserve or risk? Are my partner and I in sync? These are just some of the questions that bounce around our heads, sometimes consciously, sometimes lurking beneath the surface. Do you ever wonder why? The answer

Lorrey Receives Principal’s Award
ELIOT Lois Kilby-Chesley, the Maine Education Association’s President, came to Eliot Elementary School on March 2 to read to the first grade students. She came dressed as the Cat in the Hat's grandmother and gave each student a book. ...MONEY from page 17 others? If so, do you resent the pressure and why? In a perfect world, how would you pass your wisdom on to the next generation to encourage them to have a healthy relationship with money? Why not absorb that wisdom into your life right now? Susan Alpert (susanalpertconsulting.com) is author of “Later is Too Late: Hard Questions That Can't Wait and “Driving Solo: Dealing with Grief and the Business of Financial Survival She also is a speaker, entrepreneur, and frequent guest on national radio and television shows.
...GOOGLE from page 10 will receive a $50,000 Google for Education grant towards the establishment and improvement of a computer lab or technology program. This competition is an exciting opportunity to highlight how art, technology and STEM learning can not only coexist, but can be combined to help Maine children grow, learn and become leaders in the 21st century. By combining art and tech-
nology, we are helping prepare students for a rapidly changing digital world and simultaneously encouraging them to explore how technology can be leveraged to further innovation and creativity. It is a win-win for educators looking to create a healthy school atmosphere and get students excited to learn and for students hoping to expand their skillset and build new opportunities.
Ruth’s creativity and artistic ability make Maine proud and we’re all rooting for her in the national competition. It’s great to see Ruth, the entire Medomak Middle School and all the students across Maine who participated in the Doodle 4 Google challenge take advantage of the promise of the Maine Learning Technology Initiative, expand their imagination and develop strong skills in STEM learning.
KITTERY Amelia Lorrey (pictured to the left), a senior at Traip Academy, has been selected to receive the 2017 Principal's Award, Principal Eric Waddell announced recently. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals' Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior's academic achievement and citizenship. “Amelia is an outstanding student; more importantly, she is an outstanding school citizen. She has made significant contributions in the classroom, on stage, and in the athletics arena, noted Principal Waddell. “I am very proud of her. Lorrey intends to study international relations or film in the fall. She is the daughter of John and Linda Lorrey of Kittery Point. Amelia, Principal Waddell and other award winners and their principals will attend an Honors Luncheon at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 12:30 p.m. The Honors See LORREY page 22...

WELLS Scaredy Cat School currently has students enjoying the cushy life at Safe Haven’s Thrift Store. In prior years the kitty students quickly graduated, were adopted, and now live happily as family members, But these four seem to be in no hurry.
Unfortunately, there’s a long wait list to get into Scaredy Cat School. Many alley cats and barn waifs apply, but admission depends upon graduating our current students. Our facility is small and only accommodates a few at a time. So it’s time to nudge our current students to raise their C grades up to a B and then to an A, a lovely graduation, then placement in a loving home. Lacey (photo) and Stevie are trusting enough for teacher to pat and massage. Lacey will tolerate a gentle brushing if bribed with treats. Lacey is a beautiful

dark torti with green eyes. She has great potential to be a lover as she’s already halfway there. She and Stevie were castoffs, terribly frightened upon arrival. They would take turns laying on one another to shield themselves from the sight of humans. Their heartbreaking behavior made us all the more determined to ensure they stay together and get the best of love and life. They’re very gentle. They’ve never hissed or clawed. They simply put their lovely heads down and close their eyes, as if expecting the worst at any moment. They love treats and like to play, but are still a little shy about it. They’ll thrive in a quiet, loving home without loud noises or surprises. Both are precious and deserve your love. If you’d like to help, consider sponsoring one or both. Just $10 a month or $120 a year. Visit us at the Thrift Store or call

apprehensive when it comes to human interaction, but have gotten better since spending time in foster care. Barney, the black and white male, has progressed the most, while his calico sister Meera can still be a bit nervous with new people. They enjoy having comfy spots they can hide in and investigate their new surroundings at their own pace. They did not have interactions with dogs in their foster home, but did spend time listening to their barking and other noises. The adoption fee for these two has been waived. Furry Tales Story & Adventure Hour Held on Thursdays from 10-11 a.m. (when school is in session), in the Humane Education Room at the Animal Welfare Society where preschoolers are invited for stories, playtime, crafts, songs, animal time. The event is free to attend, though donations are appreciated.

They are spayed one-year old Heeler/ Cattle dog mixes who are looking for their forever homes. These girls "need a job" as they will be on the go when they grow up. They are good with other dogs and kids. Attention horse farm owners: they would be perfect on a working farm. If you would like a meet and greet with one or all three, call Emma's Angels Rescue 207-676-5599. They will be available March 27.

People and Business Profiles Chamber Receives $10,000 Grant for LAUNCH! KENNEBUNK The Kennebunk-Kennebunkport-Arundel Chamber of Commerce is one of eight organizations to receive Maine Office of Tourism’s tourism marketing grants during the most recent grant cycle. Part of a combined total of $112,500 in grants, the chamber will receive $10,000 to be matched and put toward the promotion of LAUNCH! A Maritime Festival, celebrating the region's maritime heritage through a variety of activities and helping to build community and tourism in the late spring shoulder season. "We are grateful for the grant monies from the Maine Office of Tourism, and hope to use the funds to grow awareness of LAUNCH! with a wider audience," said Laura Dolce, the Chamber's executive director. "Our goal is to help more people to discover the Kennebunks' maritime history and the beauty of the area, particularly at a time before our season is in full swing. Our first year was such a hit that we
Visitors and locals will celebrate LAUNCH this summer with a boat parade as shown here from a previous celebration.
can't wait to do it all over again!" LAUNCH! was created last year by a volunteer committee of the Kennebunk-KennebunkportArundel Chamber of Commerce as a way for visitors and locals alike to celebrate our collective nautical heritage. So successful in its inaugural events, LAUNCH! will return again this year on Father’s Day weekend, June 15-18, 2017. The committee has even added new events, making it now a three-day festival. Signature events include a lobster bake, the Sailors & Sirens
5K road race, Clam Jam children’s festival, Rock the Boat After Party, a River Lights Boat Parade, a Blessing of the Fleet and boatloads more. The full schedule is online at LaunchFestME.com. "These grants promote the growth of Maine's tourism industry and help keep our downtowns, cultural institutions and outdoors heritage vibrant and alive," said Commissioner George Gervais of the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development.
Maine Manufacturing Gets National Attention with Stadium Renovations NORTH BERWICK Football season has come to a close, but Hussey Seating Company is celebrating a particularly successful season. Not only did their regional favorite, the New England Patriots win the Super Bowl but the staff in North Berwick enjoyed a football season full of collegiate and professional level stadiums demanding Maine made seats. On the collegiate level, Hussey Seating completed renovations on the upper bowl of Notre Dame Stadium. Hussey added Perma-Cap® covers, vinyl clad bench covers, throughout the stadium to replace the aging wood bench seats. Perma-Cap bleacher covers are a durable, maintenance-free, vinyl bleacher
The Chamber is now accepting applications for additional events. For an application and details, visit GoKennebunks.com or call 207-967-0857.
cover that fit over existing wood or aluminum bleachers. Completing the upper bowl is the first of two stages of seating renovations as part of the $400 million Campus Crossroads Project that includes construction of more than 750,000 square feet of classroom, research and student facilities among others. On the professional football level, Hussey Seating Company completed a total seating renovation of the 65,000 seat Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee, home to the Tennessee Titans. “We’re always proud to see our work in places that receive national attention,” said Hussey Seating Company President and CEO, Gary Merrill. “Hussey Seating employees work diligently to prove that Maine manufacturing can compete and win on a global stage and they’ve done it once it again.” To view photos of the completed stadiums visit www.husseyseating.com.
