PSO Performing at York Elementary School YORK The Portland Symphony Orchestra (PSO) will be coming to the York Elementary School on Friday, March 10 at 9 a.m. to perform a KinderKonzert for the kindergarten and first grade. will also have an instrumental "petting zoo" for the children to touch the instruments. After the Elementary School, they will go over to Coastal Ridge and have another concert there for the second and third graders. This event came about when Robert Moody, music director for the PSO, came to speak at the York Rotary Club.
York Rotary was subsequently approached by the PSO to see if it would be willing to sponsor on of these concerts for the elementary school. There are 5 professional members of the symphony who will participate. The cost is $2,500. York Rotary stepped up for $500 with the local business community and parents organization raised the balance.

Daylight Saving Time Inspires Energy Savings When the time comes, people around the world diligently turn their clocks an hour ahead come the springtime and turn them back again when autumn arrives. This is because of daylight saving time, an idea first introduced centuries ago by Benjamin Franklin. When daylight saving time, or DST, was first introduced, much of what people did in their daily lives was governed by sunlight, as it was difficult to do anything once the sun set and night could only be illuminated by fire and candles. Franklin felt the country could be more productive if everyone rose earlier to maximize daytime. In the summer, pushing the clocks ahead allowed people to work longer into the evening. But Franklin’s idea was not officially implemented until much later, when it was instituted during World War I to save
money on electricity and devote more money to coal during the time of war. DST was repealed during peacetime, but implemented again during World War II and once again during the 1973 oil embargo. Today, more than 70 countries participate in DST, many of which do so because they believe it helps to save money on electricity. In

the United States, Arizona and Hawaii do not participate. Despite all of the hype surrounding DST and its financial impact, a 1975 U.S. Department of Transportation Study indicated that DST has a relatively insignificant impact on electricity usage. A 2008 study conducted in the state of Indiana compared electricity use before
and after the state adopted DST. The results indicated a 1 percent increase in residential electricity use after DST was implemented. Various governments and scientists continue to look at the practice of DST to see if it has any measurable benefits. Some medical studies indicate that DST can disrupt sleeping patterns, leading to added stress on the body and an increased risk of heart attack. But DST has its supporters as well, and individuals can take their own steps to curb electricity usage throughout the year. * Tailor your schedule to the daylight hours. Rise when the sun rises and go to bed when the sun sets to reduce your reliance on electricity. * Only use lights in the rooms you’re occupying. Turn off electrical appliances and fixtures when you leave the room. See TIME page 3...

Defensive Driving Tips Slippery road conditions can detour your vehicle smack-dab into a snowbank. When this happens, it can be tough to drive away. YORK “Every girl deserves at least ONE dress is the slogan of ‘Dress a Girl Around the World,’ an organization with over 1,600 members dedicated to bringing joy and dignity to girls around the world. On Saturday, February 4, local women gave of their skills and time for a Dress a Girl Event
at York Adult Education, sewing donated materials into pretty dresses. Jacqueline Dewey, the southern Maine Ambassador for Dress a Girl, lead the sewing spree with a new simple to make t-shirt dress. Each dress is created with a pocket which will contain a hair bow, a pair of panties, and a small stuffed animal for the recipient. The women at Satur-
day’s event completed twentyfive dresses, and celebrated their success with ice-cream sundaes. Events like this happen weekly for Dress a Girl, and will be monthly at York Adult Education. For more information, go to www. yorkadulteducation.org or www. dressagirlaroundtheworld.com.

when rocking the vehicle. This could dig the car deeper in the snow. Instead, ease forward and back by keeping a light touch on the gas. If the car remains stuck, stay inside unless help is close by. WELLS Earlier this winter, Wells High School junior Nicholas Maynard received one Gold and two Silver Key awards plus an honorable mention for his art work submitted in the regional portion of the 2017 National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards contest. One of those art submissions, a Silver Key winning photograph of a local farm animal, went a step further in recognition. In early February, Maynard was notified by Congresswoman Chellie Pingree that his image of a cow on Spiller Farm
in Wells had been recognized in Maine’s First District portion of the 2017 Congressional Art Competition, a contest sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives. “I am so pleased to inform you that, earlier this week, judges for the 2017 Congressional Art Competition selected your photograph, Moo You, as Second Runner-up for Maine’s First Congressional District. Congratulations! wrote Pingree who added at the close of her letter, “I applaud this special recognition and your commitment to making and sharing your art.

High school students who have received either a Gold or Silver Key in the Scholastic Art Contest are eligible to enter their work into the Congressional Art Competition. According to Visual Arts Director Julie Horn of the Maine Arts Commission, Maynard’s photograph along with 11 other winning student entries from Maine’s First and Second Congressional Districts will be displayed on the first floor of the Maine State House from April 1 through May 3. There will also be a reception for the 12 student artists at the Blaine House in Augusta on May 4. Maynard said he saw a lot of cows in front of a house one day while driving past Spiller Farm in Wells. He spotted one cow in particular who stood out from the others standing next to a fence. He took an image of the animal with his Canon camera and later, with some computer editing, achieved a certain look that became, Moo You. “I am very glad that I received recognition for it, said Maynard of his somewhat haunting image which is currently displayed on the Maine Arts Commission’s website: mainearts.maine.gov. According to the web page of the Maine Arts Commission, “The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic

Shape-Up with Mocktails Mocktails are non-alcoholic cocktails. They offer a wide range of ingredients like fruit juices, veggie juices, spices, herbs, mineral water, ice and sweetener. Also known as mock cocktails, they’re a delicious, refreshing alternative to an alcoholic drink. And for people who don’t want to broadcast that they’re avoiding alcohol, mocktails are the perfect answer. But that’s just the begin-
ning. They’re also the perfect answer for weight loss. If you ditch the alcohol and choose healthy ingredients, including a healthy low-calorie sweetener such as stevia, you can avoid a boatload of calories not to mention a hangover. Alcohol is one of the worst options when it comes to belly fat. Just one alcoholic drink per day can cause you to gain weight. Though studies are conflicting as to just how much
weight or belly fat is gained from how much alcohol, alcohol does cause weight gain. That’s because alcohol is a toxic substance that puts a big strain on the liver. It can clog this major organ and even contribute to fatty liver. A challenged liver can make it difficult to lose weight. So if you want to get rid of the winter “pudge and that muffin top, add mocktails to your spring shape up plan. You should also feel a lot better when you wake up in the morning. You may also want to try a short juice fast with mocktails before

Battling The Leading Cause of Death for Women: Heart Disease When researchers in the Netherlands recently compiled data from 32 studies involving more than 300,000 women, they reached a disturbing conclusion. Women who experience early menopause – before the age of 45 – face an increased risk for heart disease and premature death. “This is why women who go into early menopause need to pay special attention to their lifestyle choices and habits, says Mache Seibel, M.D., a leading American expert on menopause and author of “The Estrogen Window. Those same women also should explore the possibility of taking estrogen, which in addition to its other benefits can
help reduce the risk of death from heart disease, he says. It’s a point worth making any time, but is especially appropriate in October, which is World Menopause Month, with Oct. 18 being World Menopause Day. Estrogen therapy, typically used to minimize menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, irritability and weight gain, has been controversial. More than a decade ago, the Women’s Health Initiative advised menopausal women to stop using estrogen because of a reported increase in breast cancer, strokes and heart attacks. Since then, flaws and limitations with the WHI See WOMEN page 17...

Health & Fitness Is my Teen Using Drugs? Can I Know for Sure? The drug-abuse crisis among teenagers and young adults isn’t abating. Prescription drugs, especially opioids, are a growing threat to the health of young people, with 6 percent of teens 12 to 17 saying they use the drugs for nonmedical reasons. And in 2014, prescription drugs caused the overdose death of 1,741 young people ages 18 to 25, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. If those statistics aren’t alarming enough, studies reveal that 3 percent of teens have used heroin and that drug’s use is on the rise. In 2009, 21,000 teens sought treatment for heroin addiction, compared to 4,400 10 years earlier, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. So how can parents concerned their teen might be using opioids or other drugs find out for sure? Some parents seek to confirm their suspicions with one of the many drug-testing kits available at
the corner pharmacy. But clever teens and freemarket ingenuity are making the accuracy of those urine drug tests questionable. In fact, the urine drug test cheating industry is estimated to be near $1 billion, with products easily purchased on the web, including synthetic urine, substitute urine and even devices aimed solely at defeating the drug test. “Unfortunately, there’s a whole industry of products out there that help people cheat the drug tests, says Dr. Matt McCarty, CEO and founder of Genotox Laboratories (www. genotoxlabs.com). “Even if you decide to make your child use a urine test, savvy teenagers know that once you send them into the restroom alone they can substitute a friend’s urine or synthetic urine and trick you. The challenge for parents is to confirm that their handy drug-testing kit really is testing their teen’s urine and not someone else’s. They aren’t the only ones who face that predicament. Drug-test cheating is a problem
that human resource departments, law enforcement and other agencies or businesses that test for drugs encounter as well.
Cheating the tests also is a problem when monitoring patients who are taking opioid medications under a doctor’s care, or who are undergoing rehab and recovery from addiction.

Alcohol and Drug Dependence says there are drug-abuse warning signs parents can look for, and McCarty says all parents should be on the lookout for these signs. They include: Physical and health signs. Bloodshot eyes; pupils smaller or larger than normal; frequent nosebleeds; changes in appetite or sleep patterns; sudden weight loss or weight gain; deterioration in personal grooming or physical appearance; and impaired or unstable coordination. Behavioral signs. Skipping class and declining grades; loss of interest in extracurricular activities; acting isolated, silent or withdrawn; demanding more privacy and avoiding eye contact; and sudden change in relationships and friends. Psychological warning signs.

Sudden mood changes, irritability, angry outbursts or laughing at nothing; periods of unusual hyperactivity or agitation; lack of motivation and inability to focus; appearing fearful, withdrawn, anxious, or paranoid for no apparent reason. While schools and other agencies may provide some help, ultimately it’s up to the parents to address a teen’s drug problem, McCarty says. “All evidence suggests that preventing drug abuse starts at home, he says. “It’s not someone else’s responsibility. It’s the person who has the problem and their family who need to deal with it. That’s why if you test your kid for drugs at home, you want to make sure you’re getting their results and aren’t letting them fool you. Dr. Matt McCarty is a board certified, fellowship trained physician specializing in chronic pain management. Aware of the growing need for medication monitoring and personalized medicine, he founded Genotox Laboratories (www.genotoxlabs.com), a rapidly growing national reference lab providing medication monitoring services through urine drug screen confirmations and pharmacogenomics testing. He believes that earlier and better monitoring by all physicians prescribing controlled substances could lead to lower rates of addiction, diversion and overdose deaths.

How to Stay Young (at least in spirit) When You’re Retired
...WOMEN from page 14 study have come to light, reversing some of the thinking in the medical community. “Estrogen is safe and beneficial for the majority of women if taken in the estrogen window,â€? Seibel says. In fact, estrogen, if taken in the estrogen window, can lower the risk of death from heart disease. The “estrogen windowâ€? represents the ideal time to begin estrogen replacement. The window opens the moment a woman enters menopause. Exactly when it closes is more difficult to determine, Seibel says. Generally, it’s a 10-year time frame, but that can vary and women should have ongoing discussions with their physicians, he says. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women so it’s critical that they and their doctors understand the role estrogen plays in reducing that risk, Seibel says. A few facts women need to keep in mind include: • Age is not the deciding factor. It’s not a woman’s age but rather how many years since she went through menopause that determines whether estrogen will be protective or potentially harmful. “Unfortunately,â€? Seibel says, “even with the current thinking, some doctors are unaware that estrogen is beneficial in preventing heart disease or simply don't have enough time to adequately explain this to patients.â€? • Women’s symptoms differ from men. When men experience a heart attack, they often have crushing chest pain or radiating pain down the left arm, and sometimes right arm. While women can have those symptoms, Seibel says, they are more likely to feel profound fatigue, lightheadedness, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. They may also notice neck, jaw, back or upper abdominal pain. Women who have persistent symptoms such as those should tell their doctor as soon as possible. • Overall lifestyle matters. Regardless of whether a woman chooses to take estrogen, Seibel says, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help reduce the risk of heart disease. Women who smoke should quit because smokers have two to six times the risk of heart attack as non-smokers. They also should exercise

regularly, eat a healthy diet, watch their weight and reduce stress. “The important thing, Seibel says, “is for women to educate themselves and understand that there are proactive steps they can take to remain physically and mentally healthy and thrive beyond menopause. Time spent on you isn't lost; it's invested! Dr. Mache Seibel, one of America’s leading experts on women’s wellness and menopause, is author of “The Estrogen Window (www.EstrogenWindowBook.com). He has served 20 years on the Harvard Medical School faculty in the past and will soon be returning. He also appears regularly on national television, including MSNBC, Today, Inside Edition and PBS. Mohr Keet of South Africa bungee jumped when he was 96, landing himself in the Guinness Board of World Records. Yuichiro Miura of Japan climbed Mount Everest when he was 80. Not everyone in the golden years of life will attempt and accomplish such extraordinary feats, but most people can take steps to keep themselves young– at least in spirit–when they reach retirement. Unfortunately, for many people retirement planning remains fixated on finances, so when the big day arrives they’re not quite ready to segue into life’s new chapter, says Ann Vanderslice, president and CEO of Retirement Planning Strategies, which specializes in advising federal workers about their benefits. “After you’ve planned for the money, there is still anxi-
ety about retirement,â€? she says. “You don’t know what it’s like to not work and so there is that emotional part of retirement you need to manage. Sometimes people aren’t ready in any way, shape or form.â€? She says a few ways to hang onto a little youthful exuberance while aging gracefully in retirement include: • Be a lifelong learner. Making the effort to learn about new things keeps our brains young. Read something you
wouldn’t normally read. Sit in on a lecture that a college opens to the public. “Some of my clients mention they took classes in philosophy or in a foreign language,â€? Vanderslice says. “It’s proven that those who are lifelong learners have a greater sense of optimism and a lower chance of dementia.â€? • See the world – or at least some of it. Gas Prices in New England Continue To Decline Gas prices in New England dropped a few pennies over the last week as more refiners begin to switch from winter-blend to summer-blend gasoline and driver demand increases. “March usually signals the start of a seasonal upswing
in gas prices, but we’re not yet seeing this. Oil prices held steady between $52 and $55, which kept a lid on gas price. This happens because refineries enter maintenance season, causing them to produce less gasoline at a time when demand is on the rise. If oil prices remain

Perhaps the second hardest thing is this: Once you’ve risen from a hardscrabble upbringing and gained financial success, how do you pass the traits that helped get you there – hard work, accountability, passion and discipline – on to your children? The natural inclination is to give them all the things you never had – and to shield them from the worries you experienced growing up. But that won’t help them long term. “You can’t duplicate your humble beginnings for them,” says wealth management advisor Rebecca Walser of Walser Wealth. “But you can teach your kids the skills they’ll need when they’re making their own way in the world.” Walser, a successful tax attorney and certified financial planner who specializes in working with high net worth clients, says one of her earliest memories is of being 4 years old and flipping a light switch in her home, only to have nothing happen. “That’s when I learned about money and bills, and that if you don’t pay the electric bill, the lights won’t come on,” she says. Her children – ages 9, 7 and 4 – haven’t experienced anything quite like that, but she still wants them to understand money. One way she accomplishes that is they get weekly allowances to cover their expenses, and they must budget everything for themselves. “When we set a limit, we set a limit,” Walser says. “Mom and Dad aren’t going to bail them out if they are a quarter short on a toy they want.” Here are some other tips Walser has for helping fortunate kids understand finances: • Experiment with delayed gratification. Remember See KIDS page 19...

BUSINESS & FINANCE ...YOUNG from page 17
...KIDS from page 18 the old Stanford University “marshmallow experiments” from the 1960s and ‘70s? A child was offered a choice between one small but immediate reward (usually a marshmallow) or two rewards if he or she could wait until the tester came back after about 15 minutes. In follow-up studies, the researchers found those who could wait longer tended to have better life outcomes, as measured by SAT scores, body mass index and educational success. • Don’t keep the kids in the dark. Children often are unaware of all the unseen expenses that go into running a household. Make sure they know there’s a cost for electricity, water, cable and home maintenance. • Needs vs. wants. How often have you heard your child say, “But I need those jeans!” There’s a big difference between wanting a designer label and needing new pants. Tell your teen you’ll give her a reasonable amount of money to buy the jeans – but if she requires more for what she wants, it’s on her. It’s amazing how quickly kids change their mind about needing something when they’re paying for it. • Work it out. Your children may not need or want to work, but a job can teach a lot about having a solid work ethic, the importance of getting a good education and competition in the marketplace. Volunteering can have similar ben-
efits. Parents want to give their children every advantage, Walser says, and that’s just what you’re doing if you prepare them to better deal with real-world financial decisions. “A little tough love now will go a long way towards preventing an unwelcome sense of entitlement from your kids and keeping them out from under a cloud of debt when they’re older,” she says. Walser has the support of her husband – from humble beginnings himself – whose family routinely says “the best thing my father ever gave me was nothing.” Walser sums this all up by admitting that “finding the right balance, when you do have something to give, is the key to providing a more comfortable life for your children without quenching that inner drive that we all are born with to make something of ourselves – something that cannot just be handed to you.” Rebecca Walser is a licensed tax attorney and certified financial planner who specializes in working with high net worth individuals, families and businesses at Walser Wealth (www.walserwealth.com). She earned her juris doctor degree from the University of Florida and her masters of law degree in taxation from New York University. ventured out to, some close by and others far away. Traveling and enjoying new experiences is a great way to keep you feeling young and enthusiastic about life, Vanderslice says, whether you head to a state park just an hour’s drive away or you board a plane bound for Paris. “Part of the fun of traveling is deciding where you want to go,” Vanderslice says. “The sky should be the limit.” Don’t eliminate anything from your initial list just because of expense, she says. You might be able to find bargains, and because you’re retired you can travel any time you want, which allows you go in the off season
when prices are lower. Remember your doctor’s advice. Activities such as enrolling in a college class can help keep you mentally young, but you want your body to cooperate, too. “We’re always looking for that magic bullet, the easy and quick way to feeling younger,” Vanderslice says. “The truth is that those things your doctor tells you – exercise, eat a healthy diet, get the appropriate amount of sleep – are about as close to a magic bullet as you’re going to get.” “People think that money is the most important aspect of retirement, but it’s really No. 2,” Vanderslice says. “You can have
more than enough money, but if you aren’t healthy or doing the things you enjoy, the money won’t matter.” Ann Vanderslice (www. annvanderslice.com), president and CEO of Retirement Planning Strategies, helps federal employees understand their benefits, maximize the value of their benefits, and plan for retirement, as well as organize income planning and IRA distributions. ...PLAYS from page 13 cusp of his super-stardom and the people who influenced him along the way. The international hit sensation “Mamma Mia! opens the Ogunquit Playhouse season May 17 and runs through July 1. Over sixty million people from around the globe have fallen in love with the characters, the enchanting
story and ABBA’s timeless music that makes “Mamma Mia! the ultimate feel-good show. The 1920s come roaring to life with showgirls, gangsters and more in this musical adaptation of Woody Allen and Douglas McGrath's madcap film “Bullets Over Broadway on stage July 5-29 and directed by Jeff Whiting. “Bullets Over Broadway is the hilarious musical comedy about the making of a Broadway show, filled
with tap dancing gangsters, saucy showgirls, and colorful characters including an aging diva, a savant hit-man and Sally Struthers as the dog-toting comedienne Eden Brent. The season continues with the Tony Award-winning musical “Ragtime on stage August 2-26. This sweeping musical portrait of early twentieth century America tells the story of three families in pursuit of the American Dream.
Together, they confront history's timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair... and what it means to live in America. Closing the landmark season is “From Here to Eternity on stage October 4-29. The Ogunquit Playhouse is honored to be collaborating with Tim Rice on the rollout of the North American premiere of this epic new musical based on James Jones’ acclaimed novel with
lyrics by Tim Rice, book by Donald Rice and Bill Oakes, and music by Stuart Brayson. Set in Hawaii in the weeks before the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, this tale follows the story of two U.S. soldiers, the soulful Private Prewitt and ardent Sergeant Warden, as they embark on doomed and dangerous love affairs with the wrong women. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I sure appreciate and learn a lot from your newsletters. Have been receiving them for years .Thanks so much. Could you please tell me if there is a way to change Word Pad from double spacing when typing. Note Pad does not do this which is nice. I find double spacing takes up a lot of space. Thanks in advance, Elaine Dear Elaine, I use Notepad every week, but I don't use WordPad quite as often. Both applications come free with every version of Microsoft Windows so it is good to become familiar with them. I opened up WordPad on my Windows 10 computer, (if you don't know where to find it, just tap the windows logo key on your keyboard and type wordpad) and did a little experimenting. Here is what I found. If you just
type and let the text wrap (go to the next line when it runs out of space) without using the "Enter" key on your keyboard, it will automatically wrap the text to the next line using single space. The problem you are describing is when you use the enter key to go to the next line, WordPad automatically inserts a double space. There are a couple of ways to get around this problem, first is to hold down the shift key when pressing "enter". This will give you a single space. The second method has to be done at the beginning of each document. You can't save formatting defaults in WordPad like you can in more expensive programs like Word. 1. Open your WordPad document. 2. Click "Select All" in the ribbon. 3. Click on the "Paragraph" icon to open the paragraph dialog box. 4. Set the line spacing to 1. and remove

the check from "Add 10pt space after paragraphs". 5. Click the "OK" button. I usually just hold down the shift key while pressing "Enter" since this works in most typing programs. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady I am new at burning pictures on a CD and I just got Windows 10 on my new used Dell computer. Could you walk me through the process in layman's terms? Thank you so much, Barb Dear Barb, Windows 10 includes a feature for burning CDs and DVDs, and you can put any of your files including music, pictures and documents on your disk. Here is how. 1. Insert a new, blank CD or DVD in the drive. 2. Find the folder containing your pictures.3. Select the photos you want to burn onto the disk. 4. Look in the status bar in the bottom of the window. It will show you how many files you have selected, and how much space they will use. You don't want to go over the amount of space on your disk. 5. Right-click on any of the selected files, point to "Send To" in the context menu that appears, and in the submenu click on your CD or DVD drive. 6. A small dialog box will appear. Type a title for your disk, and the type of disk you want to make. I usually prefer the second option, With a CD/DVD player. Click "Next". 7. If you selected
the top option, like a USB flash drive, you will need to wait for the disk to be formatted. The advantage is that you can then add additional files in the future. The disadvantage is that this type of disk is often not usable in music players for music, or TV and DVD devices for pictures. 8. If you selected the second option, you will need to click on the "Finish Burning" icon in the menu once all the pictures are copied to the disk. It will now be ready to be used in most devices. Elizabeth PS: You can select all the photos in a folder using the keyboard combination, Ctrl + A, or click on one photo, then holding down the Ctrl Key, click on additional photos to select them as well. Dear Computer Lady, I Read your newsletter and love it, have learned much from it! I was running windows 7 and upgraded to windows 10 free. Now I want to know how I can make DVDs from installed windows 10 for fresh install windows 10 again. I try to make USB but it did not work properly. Regards, M. Dear M., If you want to do a fresh install of Windows 10 on the same computer, all you have to do is create an install disk using the tool and directions on Microsoft's website at: https://www.

microsoft.com/en-us/softwaredownload/windows10. The tool is called the media creation tool, and Microsoft has some pretty good instructions for you to follow as you download first the tool, then the file for the disk. You will not need a product key since Windows 10 will authenticate using a hardware key that is unique to your computer. If you want to create an image of your current setup on your computer complete with files, drivers, and installed programs you will need to get a program like Acronis True Image at: http://www. anrdoezrs.net/click-303048312818204 which will allow you to make a complete backup of your hard drive, and also create a boot disk that will allow you to start the computer if the hard drive has crashed and restore the computer using the backup you made. When you create this type of backup on a regular basis, you also protect yourself against ransomware. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I own a laptop, tablet and a smartphone. I have to delete emails three times. Is there a way to stop this? I would like to delete an email from any of the three sources and have the email deleted on the other two automatically. I use Gmail and my wife uses Yahoo. It is the same irritating problem on both systems. Thank you, John Dear John, There is a way to set this up in Gmail. On your laptop, you are directly connected to Gmail in your browser so there is no need to change anything there. If you install the Gmail app on your tablet and phone and use that instead of the built in email app, you will find that the email will stay in sync very nicely. When you delete an email message on your phone, within seconds it will also be deleted on your tablet and laptop. I don't use Yahoo, so I don't know if there is a yahoo email app that does the same thing. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? If the humidity of your home is very dry, the orchid will do better if the pot is set over rocks in a humidity tray. The good news for Mainers is that with our short winter days, orchids require only “low light not direct sun that will burn the leaves. The orchid likes the same temperatures as we humans, between 60 degrees at night and 70-80 in the day time. Ebba recommended any indoor plant fertilizer be used monthly. Last, orchids should be and can be repotted, but not while they are blooming. Use the special orchid potting mix that allows the roots to dry out and breathe. For more information, Ebba recommended the American Orchid Society website: www. aos.org.
YORK On a recent wintery day, the membership of the Old York Garden Club and guests were enlightened with the expert knowledge and practical tips about the cultivation and care of growing orchids by Jonathan Ebba, UNH horticulture manager of Thompson Greenhouses. Ebba explained that the orchid family is the largest with over 25,000 varieties loved by all for their ease of growing, beauty and long lasting blooms. There are beautiful hybrid plants that have been developed; the most common found in grocery stores is the moth orchid or Phalaenopsis. Ebba shared 5 tips about the care to guarantee success. As for watering, less is better. Generally a weekly through watering with luke warm water re-

~ Obituaries & News ~ Organ Concert to Benefit Organ Restoration KENNEBUNKPORT First Congregational Church of Kennebunkport, 141 North St., established in 1730, continues to seek donations to restore its 1854 E. & G.G. Hook pipe organ. The organ has a unique place in Kennebunkport history. It was built in Boston for South Congregational Church and when that congregation replaced it in 1916 after 62 years of service, it was given to First
Church where it has remained ever since. The needed restoration is scheduled for the beginning of 2018 and the church has raised $38,000 of its $45,000 goal. To share its historic 1854 Hook Organ, First Church’s Music Director Joyce Painter Rice continues to arrange second Sunday concerts. On March 12, at 2:30 p.m.., First Church will host an informa-
tional lecture with organ historian Barbara Owen who will expound on organ building in New England and on the E. & G. G. Hook Organ Company, interspersed with period musical scores played by Rice. These two women bring enthusiasm, talent, passion and a wealth of knowledge about the history of organs and organ music Joyce Painter Rice became the music director at First

His hobbies in life included golfing, travelling, and singing old songs of the ‘40s and ‘50s. Last summer, the department honored his many years of service with a celebration attended by firefighters and local community members. Efficiency Maine Teams Up with Local Contractors to Help Businesses Save on Energy Costs
BERWICK Efficiency Maine has just launched a Small Business Initiative to help local companies reduce lighting costs by upgrading to energy-efficient LED lighting. The Initiative is open to small businesses in the Berwick area, including North and South Berwick. The Initiative connects business owners and landlords
to local contractors for lighting assessments and upgrades. This limited-time promotion offers higher incentives than are ordinarily available through Efficiency Maine. Many LED upgrade projects have a payback of around a year. Most small businesses in the greater Berwick area are eligible for the program. Program
eligibility is determined by the rate on the business’s electric bill. “Small General Service customers, or businesses that use less than 25 kW a month, can participate. Area small businesses can get started simply by calling Efficiency Maine at 866-376-2463 or by going online to http:// www.efficiencymaine.com/
at-work/berwicks to sign up for a free lighting assessment. A local contractor will be assigned to perform the assessment and generate a savings estimate and proposal. Past participants of the program have saved an average of $100 per month. Many participating businesses realize savings great enough to recoup project costs in one year.
“Small business owners are busy people. We launched the Small Business Initiative to make lighting upgrades as easy as possible. Switching to high-efficiency LEDs can significantly reduce lighting costs, meaning more money to invest in your business rather than on your
dedication to the pets in our care. And we love our annual visit by the UPS Flame Truck, chock full of much needed goodies for our pets. Mail-It Unlimited’s customers really went above and beyond this year. Your generous dona-
tions of hundreds and hundreds of pounds of food, litter and toys will keep our dogs and cats happy and full for a long time. We couldn’t do what we do without the support of our community members. Thank you!

She was later to be abandoned into our permanent custody by a no-show care provider. Jojo will do well with other non-aggressive house cats; children and dogs are an unknown, but cats are a quick study and will adjust to reasonable conditions. Jojo's vaccinations are current and she has passed her wellness exam. She is looking for an indoor only home where she can continue her current life style and enjoy a long, healthy life. If you would like to add a sweet gentle beauty to your home, Jojo would like to make your acquaintance. She will be interviewing for a new family this Sunday at the Sanford adoption center. ~ News ~ United Way Grants $640K to Local Organizations YORK COUNTY United Way of York County has awarded $640,000 in grants to various organizations throughout the community. A total of 37 nonprofits will receive investments this year for 63 programs addressing a variety of critical needs in the county. These investments support United Way’s strategic priority areas of Bright Beginnings, Healthy Foods, Connected Youth and Supportive Services. “These vital programs support the best start for our youngest citizens, provide healthy foods for children and seniors, engage youth in meaningful service, and
meet basic needs, all critical components of our collective efforts to build an even stronger York County, noted United Way of York County President & CEO Barb Wentworth. New grants in the Bright Beginnings strategic area include “Count ME In, which promotes elementary school attendance for school success, and York County Community Action Corp.’s “A Place for Us, which provides support to strengthen families to allow them to support their young children. There are also two new grants in the Connected Youth strategic area, American Red Cross’ “Youth Volunteer
Engagement that increases the number of youth involved in their community; and Sanford Springvale YMCA’s “Y Interact Leaders Club that promotes youth service and philanthropy as a path to leadership and civic responsibility. Since its inception in 1986, and thanks to the support of thousands of generous individuals, businesses, and organizations throughout York County, United Way has invested more than $20 million in programs that make a difference in the lives of those they serve. Indoor Walking Trails Moved to York Middle School YORK Want to keep up with your fitness goals but have a difficult time with the weather? Did you enjoy the walking trails at the High School in years past? Come to the York Adult Education Walking Trails at York Middle School. There are two trails mapped out for walkers: York Beach - the easiest trail. This is a trail like the beach, all on one level. You have a couple of ramps to contend with, but no stairs. Everyone on this trail wears shirts and shoes. A mile is 7 laps on the orange line on our
map. Just follow the YB signs. Mt. Agamenticus - the most challenging trail. Although a version of this hike avoids parking problems, mud, and slippery surfaces, it does offer lots of elevation changes and the freshest air indoors can provide. A mile is 4 laps on the green line on our map, just follow the Mount A signs. Along the trails are 7 fitness stations, feel free to stop and get a bit more of a workout with the exercises at each station. To register, just go to www.yorkadulteducation.org or call the Adult Ed at 207-363-7922.

Lasagne for Charity
Chef/realtors who participated in the lasagna fundraising competition are, left to right, Marjorie Rogers, ReMax Shoreline, Nancy Ergmann, Century 21 Atlantic, Debbi Bozworth, Coldwell Residential Brokerage Portsmouth, Teri Woods, Better Homes and Gardens The Masiello Group, and Nancy Leigh, Anne Erwin Sotheby’s International Realty.
YORK What started as a casual boast of a lasagna recipe blossomed into an organized contest for charity. Linda Peters Drake of First Financial Mortgage in York, and Brian Meagher, Sales Manager at First Financial Mortgage hosted a five-chef lasagna bake-off on February 28 at their headquarters, with proceeds to benefit The York Food Pantry. Melanie Trombley of Red Door Title was a sponsor of the event. A lasagna rivalry between realtors Nancy Ergmann of Cen-
tury 21 Atlantic and Debbi Bozworth of Coldwell Residential Brokerage Portsmouth sprouted into a five person challenge. All friends and business associates, each realtor/chef prepared her favorite lasagna and judges voted on flavor, consistency and best overall. More than fifty attendees were treated to Caesar salad and lasagna served on high-top tables decorated Mardi Gras style. Michelle Surdoval, Executive Director of the York Community Service Association, spoke about the agency's new

ity for YLT to lease the field and establish active agriculture and a working educational farm. “It is a realization of a dream that we have had for a long time, said YLT Executive Director Doreen MacGillis. Long-time supporter of YLT Julia Clough is the seller of the Long Neck Marsh Road property and lives across the field from it. She is just as excited as YLT is about the move. “We have the same ideals as far as land use, and I am excited about them being neighbors, Clough said. “It’s an extraordinary situation for them as well as me. Within two years, YLT will also purchase a seven-acre abutting lot that connects the new home to miles of trails on
York Land Trust Purchases Property, Moves to New Headquarters YORK After years of searching for a permanent home, York Land Trust (YLT) purchased and moved its headquarters recently to an outstanding property on Long Neck Marsh Road in York. The timing of this transition could not have been better, as the building where the previous Route 1 office was located
was sold in September of 2017 and YLT’s lease ended last month. The property is everything YLT was looking for in a new headquarters. The building is a beautiful historic replica, capestyle house built in 2009 that sits on a three-acre parcel of land on Smelt Brook, a major tributary of the York River. The spacious house will allow YLT to evolve in the coming years and grow more fully into its mission, with space available for educational programs for the public and school children, meetings, events, and retreats. Its setting at the edge of a large, conserved meadow also opens the possibil-
location opening soon on Route One in York and the ongoing need in the community for their services. She gratefully accepted the donations raised by the lasagna contest. First Financial Mortgage is matching the donations received dollar for dollar. And the winners were: third place Nancy Ergmann, Century 21 Atlantic; second place Debbi Bozworth, Coldwell Residential Brokerage Portsmouth; first place Nancy Leigh of Anne Erwin Sotheby's International Realty. Linda Drake Peters plans to expand the contest next year and make this an annual charitable event.

~ News ~ Central School Participate in Community Service SOUTH BERWICK The students and staff at Central School celebrated the 100th day of school by participating in a wonderful community service project. For the past
eleven years, the school has collected food and personal care items for the South Berwick Food Pantry and for End 68 Hours of Hunger (end68hoursofhunger.org). The goal is to have

100 items from each classroom presented to these organizations on the 100th Day of school. Families elected to involve other family members or neighbors in the collection of goods. Each classroom kept track of their collection efforts on a large thermometer outside of their class-
room door. Culminating activities included individual classes creating a display of their collections in an all school assembly. The celebration included songs and the presentation of certificates to a member of the South Berwick Food Pantry and End 68 Hours of Hunger.
