By Maura Curley Special to the Sentinel OGUNQUIT Reunions can be extraordinary, when we meld memories with the provocative present. When I first heard his voice over the phone; seasoned with age, but still strong with that unmistakable authority, I was reunited with my younger self, growing up on Boston’s north shore. I was suddenly sitting in my brother’s old Ford on a Sunday night, listening to “Night Train” on WMEX radio. We’d feast on Hostess cupcakes and Coke, and let

Arnie “Woo-Woo” Ginsburg introduce us to the latest rock and roll. Recently I learned the iconic Arnie of my youth, was a neighbor (sort of) in Ogunquit, so I decided to give him a call to talk about those days – and now. After seven decades in broadcasting, with legions of loyal fans, and a nice life here, Ginsburg wasn’t looking for any publicity. Yet our phone conversation grew increasingly interesting, and a half hour later he welcomed me into his cottage on Shore Road. He gave

me explicit directions, but it was the “woo” on the car in the driveway that directed me to his door. (The “woo” originated from a train whistle he sounded on his show, followed by a bevy of other sound effects.) Arnie Ginsburg was to radio broadcasting what Mark Zuckerberg is to social media. Ginsburg revolutionized our relationship with radio, and fostered a generation’s affinity for rock and roll. “I never wanted to do anything else, but radio,” Ginsburg See GINSBURG page 16...

exhibit is anticipated to be the largest collection of Bellamy carvings ever assembled - over 100 pieces. It will include seven examples from the Kittery Museum’s own collection on loan for the summer. Widely considered to be the pinnacle of American woodcarving, the Bellamy eagle vies with such hallowed icons as the Statue of Liberty, the Great Seal, and Old Glory. Yet what of its creator? Who was the man responsible

for giving flight to this most celebrated piece of Americana? Recounting more than five years of investigative findings, author Craig answers these and other questions concerning the art and life of the immortal John Haley Bellamy, Kittery’s favorite son and America’s greatest woodcarver. This free presentation begins at 7p.m. For more information, contact Kittery Historical and Naval Society at kitterymuseum@netzero.net.
