By Timothy Gillis, staff writer ELIOT & SO. BERWICK In the wake of the tragedy in Florida last week, local officials held an active shooter training session. The work was scheduled last year, and is an annual requirement for local law enforcement, but it is quite timely. Police Chief Elliot Moya doesn’t believe the most recent mass shooting adds more pressure to the training session, but

he does hope it adds a realness to the event. The Eliot Police Department along with police, fire, and EMS agencies from surrounding towns held the training session at Marshwood Middle School in Eliot. This past Tuesday’s active shooter training was the first session in more than a decade that Chief Moya can recall being held at an actual school and not at a

mock training site. The training scenarios included identifying the threat of a shooter, hostage situation response, and responding to injured individuals while still in a hostile environment. Maine schools have long been working with local police departments to staff resource officers at schools in their districts. Jeffrey Upton, a full-time police officer for South Berwick, is the resource officer to all of the See TRAINING page 5...

Honoring the Four Chaplains BERWICK In a solemn ceremony at the February meeting of the Charles S. Hatch, Unit 79 of the American Legion Auxiliary in Berwick, Chaplain Ann Urbanski, members Mona Allen, Susan Branyen and Caren Chandler read the life stories of the Four Chaplains. A candle was lit in memory of each Chaplain, and an empty chair with their picture on it reminds us of the ultimate sacrifices that they made. On February 3, 1943, the U.S. troop transport S.S. Dorchester was torpedoed off of Greenland in the early hours of the morning. There were 900 men sleeping. In the midst of the

ensuing chaos, the four Army chaplains, John P. Washington (a Roman Catholic Priest), Alexander D. Goode (a Rabbi), First Lts. Clark V. Poling (a Minister)

Dorchester slipped beneath the waves taking more than 600 men with her, but because of the brave actions of the four chaplains more than 200 men’s lives were spared. Remaining on the deck, the four chaplains linked arms together, sang and prayed as the survivors watched them vanish into the sea. Chaplain Poling’s father, himself serving in North Africa at the time, received word of their noble acts and was inspired to erect a Chapel dedicated to their memory. The Chapel of the Four Chaplains in Philadephia, PA is an interfaith shrine with altars for each faith — Catholic, Jewish, and Protestant — represented by the four men.
