Basketball Fundraiser A Slam Dunk YORK Beginning on Friday, February 22 and running through Sunday, March 3, the 29th Annual Charlie Brown Basketball Tournament will take place at the York Middle School and York High School Gyms. Sponsored by the York Parks and Recreation Department and the York Police Association, this tournament has raised

over $250,000 for youth-based community initiatives since its inception in 1990. Tournament divisions are for boys and girls 3rd-8th grade. The tournament is double elimination and the top two teams in each division with receive awards. Team registrations are available at www.yorkparksandrec.org. All recreation and school teams welcome.

Wells High School in Wells Mackenzie Foss, a senior at Wells High School, has been selected to receive the 2019 Principal’s Award. According to Principal Sheehy, Foss has maintained high honor roll status throughout high school and received numerous academic awards from faculty in all areas of study. Foss contributes to her school in the classroom, on the athletic fields, and in the community. As a result of being a key member on the Student Council and in the Interact club, Foss has been at the forefront of numerous volunteer events. She has distinguished herself as the type of student who values every opportunity to learn. In addition, she is a member of WHS’s soccer, basketball and softball teams.

About the Award The award, established in 1985 and sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship. Award winners and their principals will attend an Honors Luncheon at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor on Saturday, April 1 at 12:30 p.m. The luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler. McGowan and Tyler were former Maine principals and executive directors of the Association. An additional five $1,000 scholarships will be presented through the efforts of the MPA Scholarship Golf Tournament.

Marshwood Match on TV Quiz Show Principal’s Award Winners Announced YORK COUNTY Traip Academy in Kittery Amelia Lorrey, a senior at Traip Academy, has been selected to receive the 2019 Principal’s Award. “Amelia is an outstanding student; more importantly, she is an outstanding school citizen. She has made significant contributions in the classroom, on stage, and in the athletics arena,” noted Principal Waddell. “I am very proud of her.” Lorrey intends to study international relations or film in the fall.

Text to 911 is Now Available Throughout Maine STATEWIDE The Maine Public Utilities Commission (Commission) announced that text to 911 is now available at all 911 Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) throughout Maine. The Commission’s Emergency Services Communications Bureau (ESCB) has been working with major wireless telecommunications carriers over the last several months to complete and test this advancement in technology.

Texting 911 should only be used when making a voice call to 911 is not an option. Citizens and visitors throughout Maine can send a short text message to 911 in an emergency. Text-to-911 is intended primarily for use in two emergency scenarios: for those individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing or speech impaired, and for those unable to make a voice call, for example during a medical emergency that renders the person incapable of

speech, or in the instance of a home invasion or abduction. “Text to 911 technology could be a life-saver, especially for people who might otherwise not be able to make a voice call” said Chairman Mark Vannoy. “This is a major technology advancement, and Maine is among the first in the nation to successfully implement this important technology which takes advantage of our advanced Next Generation 9-1-1 system.”

The Commission urges Mainers to keep the following in mind if they send a text to 911: The texting option should only be used when making a voice call to 911 is not an option. Using a phone to call 911 is still the most efficient way to get emergency help.
