Grandson of Aviation Pioneer to Speak at Library KITTERY Everyone knows Kittery is a Navy town, steeped in the lore of undersea vessels. Who could have guessed it also boasts a connection to aircraft history? In aviation and military circles, the name Sikorsky is as synonymous with the helicopter as the rest of the world links the Ford name to the automobile. Later this month local resident Igor Sikorsky III will share insights at Rice Public Library about the remarkable career of his grandfather, who is considered “the Father of the Helicopter.” “It’s impossible to tell the story in an hour,” Igor III acknowledged. “The conversation doesn’t end at the end of the talk.” The original Igor Sikorsky was a pi-

oneer aviator, inventor and entrepreneur. While he may not have been the first person to create the helicopter, he was the visionary who achieved mass production. He launched what became known as the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation in 1923, just a few years after immigrating to the United States. His helicopters were utilized by the military of both the United States and the United Kingdom during World War II. Later the company developed such wellknown choppers as the UH-60 Blackhawk, of Black Hawk Down fame, and for decades has provided the presidential helicopter known as Marine One. But Igor III wants to emphasize that his grandfather’s legacy extends beyond helicopters. In fact, his talk is entitled

“The Three Careers of Igor I Sikorsky,” and billed as “a remarkable life described with personal anecdotes about his inventions, wisdom and beliefs.” In addition to the helicopters for which he is most famous, Sikorsky built and flew fixed-wing aircraft in Russia and developed flying boats in America. Igor III describes his presentation, which includes a slideshow of about 80 images, as “a kaleidoscope of his achievements.” He also plans to share personal anecdotes about his grandfather, who died when Igor III was 11 years old. He remembers Sikorsky as a very humble, down-to-earth man with courtly OldSee FLIGHT page 2...

book took place some forty years ago and she has been encouraged to write her story by many well wishers for some time now. Two years ago Paulette travelled to Argentina to visit with friends and met a local editor/ publisher who heard of her story and wanted to interview Paulette on film because the story sounded so compelling. The editor was thinking of making a documentary of this woman’s life showing that you can survive major tribulation and still come out of the process unscathed. The book shows that by prayer and perseverance, justice can prevail. After the interview with the Argentine editor, Karchenes

was asked to put her story in writing and that the editor, Carolina Neal would work with her during the process to accomplish this lifelong dream. Paulette said that, “Caroline was instrumental in getting me started with the process.” After working with the editor for almost a year, she was successful in finding a publisher to publish her book. ‘The Endless Pursuit’ is a story of a kidnapping that occurred during a divorce process and the book takes the reader through many twists and turns as a distraught mother tries to find her missing child. It is a compelling story that leads an overwrought mother through an adventure of perverse behav-

iors and enormous deception and keeps the reader spellbound. Everyone who has read the book to date claims the book is a ‘very good read.’ This mystery can be purchased through www.dorrance-

bookstore.com and also on Amazon.com. Karchenes says, “She is glad that her highly kept secret of forty years has finally been told.” Paulette writes under the pen name of Paulina Paulson. The author, now retired, continues to write and is currently scripting a book about her experiences as a bed and breakfast innkeeper, where she and her husband successfully welcomed guests from around the world, year round in their lovely Maine home for over eight years. Karchenes continues to enjoy family and friends during her retirement and can always be found writing her compassionate words and interesting stories in her Cape Neddick home.
