South Span of memorial Bridge arrives By Larry Favinger Contributing Writer KITTerY – The Memorial Bridge linking Portsmouth to Badger’s Island in Kittery, Maine, is scheduled to open this summer, according to a spokesperson for the contractor. A large crowd of onlookers was on hand recently to watch as the south span of the new threepiece structure was floated down the Piscataqua River from the New Hampshire State Pier and put into place on the Portsmouth side of the river that separates Maine and New Hampshire. The Maine span is scheduled to be put into place in March. The center or lift section of the bridge that carries Route 1 between the two states is sched-

uled for installation sometime in June. The bridge is slated to open to traffic in early July but the
project will not be fully completed until later in the year, said Carol Morris of Morris Communications, the spokesperson for
Archer Western Contractors, in a telephone interview. Once the bridge is open to traffic, she said, additional work
on the approaches and landscaping will be completed. There is an ongoing citizens’ effort to have the bridge lighted but the two states are not involved in that process. Bill Boynton, a spokesman for the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, said the department is “pleased” with this “very major project,” noting there is an “aggressive timeline” for its completion. The states of New Hampshire and Maine are equally sharing the cost of the $80 million-plus project but New Hampshire is responsible for the work with the contractor, “making sure everything is on track,” Morris said. Boynton said the putting See BRIDGE page 9...

The Postal Service expects to generate cost savings of approximately $2 billion annually, once the plan is fully implemented, according to a press report issued by Tom Rizzo, USPS Corporate Communications, Northern New England District, Portland. “The Postal Service is advancing an important new approach to delivery that reflects the strong growth of our package business and responds to the financial realities resulting from America’s changing mailing habits,” said Patrick R. YOrK – Brian Lenzi of Barrington, N.H., has built structures in farflung locales the world over as a commander in the Air National Guard. So he’s thinking that Haiti will not be much different. But the next few weeks will be telling as Lenzi, now retired, and Paul Salacain of York and a member of the York Rotary Club, explore the challenges and possibilities of building a guesthouse on the grounds of a school in Haiti. Lenzi and Salacain will be traveling to rural northern Haiti, as part of a growing number of Seacoast area residents involved with trying to create and now sustain the Eben Ezer School in Milot, Haiti. “The exciting part of this project is that we are looking at ways to help the school and its students be self-sufficient,” said Salacain, who also visited Milot in 2010 after the York Rotary donated a generator to the school. “We are on the cutting edge of both eco-tourism and sustain-

WellS – A community forum to update the public on how the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District (WOCSD) provides a safe environment for school children and staff and to share aspects of the district’s Emergency Preparedness Plan, will be presented on Monday, Feb. 11, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Olenn Auditorium at Wells High School. Principals from the district’s schools will explain steps that have been taken to ensure safety at Wells Elementary School, Wells Junior High School and Wells High School. Administra-
tors and police will also be present to respond to questions from audience members. “As you know, the events that took place in Newtown, Conn., in December were disheartening for us all,” wrote Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. William H. Richards in a letter to parents and guardians of students about the forum. “As a school community, we take the safety of our students and staff seriously.” In his letter, Richards stressed “that there are some protocols and procedures that we will not share because they must remain confidential to maximize effectiveness.”

The group is well on its way to conserving Rustlewood Farm, a 300-acre dairy farm on Wilson Road owned by Ken and Richard Johnson. The brothers have been working with the Kittery Land Trust to conserve the land so that its rich agricultural soils and extensive fields and woodlands will always be available for producing food, protecting water quality, and providing wildlife habitat. To increase understanding and appreciation of the importance of local farmland, KLT is planning a series of diverse events throughout the year including walks, talks and demonstrations. All events are free and open to the public. “We are excited to roll out a series of fun, informative events throughout the year that will put the spotlight on local farms”, said KLT Executive Director Christine Bennett.

The upcoming events include: Saturday, Feb 9, 10 a.m. and noon at Rustlewood Farm – Join Kittery Land Trust and Great Works Regional Land Trust on a hike or ski/snowshoe (weather depending) to explore the uplands and wetlands of Rustlewood Farm. Tracker and naturalist Dan Gardoqui, executive director of White Pine Programs, will lead the excursion. Participants should park at the Church at Spruce Creek. A van will shuttle back and forth to the farm, leaving the church at 10 and noon. Saturday, March 2, 4 p.m. at Kittery Community Center – KLT will screen “Betting the Farm”, a new film by Cecily Pingree and Jason Mann. The film follows several dairy farmers in Aroostook County as they form their own milk cooperative, Maine’s Own Organic Milk. Bill Eldridge, CEO of

great way for the whole family to share in a wonderful winter adventure outdoors.” Participants can opt for a snowshoeing, ice skating, cross-country skiing, or try their hand at winter tree identification, animal tracking or one of six ice-fishing events. For those seeking less typical winter activities, there’s a short bike/run/ sled triathlon in Sanford, a birdwatching cruise on Casco Bay, a wood duck nesting box installation in Unity, or a twilight ski tour at Acadia National Park. There are also plenty of family fun days with snowman making and hot cocoa! Many of the events are hosted by parks and land trusts, helping introduce participants to some of the lands that have been preserved in recent decades and are open year-round for public enjoyment. “The Great Maine Outdoor Weekend helps to showcase some of the spectacular parks and public lands around the state –which typically have far fewer visitors in winter,” observes Coalition member Gary Best of the Maine Division of Parks and Public Lands. “We hope people will use the weekend to discover the winter wonders offered by natural settings close to their homes.” “We’ve been encouraged by the positive response to our first two Great Maine Outdoor Weekends,” adds Balentine. “Participants have enjoyed their experiences and a lot of people are looking forward to fun winter explorations during the upcoming Great Maine Outdoor Weekend Feb. 15 through 18.” For more information about Great Maine Outdoor Weekend events in your area, visit www. greatmaineoutdoorweekend.org.

In the past, Lenzi has built structures in the Caribbean as well as South and Central America. The guesthouse is being designed by Mike Lassel of Lassel Architects in South Berwick. Salacain will learn about water tanks in Haiti and will meet fellow Rotarians in the nearby city of Cap Haitien. The Cap Haitien Rotary is expected to partner with the York Rotary as well as the South Berwick-Eliot Rotary in two grants. These grants will pay for vocational supplies, a water tank, a generator, solar panels and the shipping a container with the materials to Haiti. Painting, sewing, carpentry and welding supplies will help train students in vocational programs. The goal of the guesthouse is to provide jobs and training for students and an income for the school. “I am designing a building to withstand earthquakes and to be comfortable in the tropical climate of the Caribbean,” said Lassel, who said he looks at this project as an interesting challenge in a very different environment. Milot is expected to see increased tourism in the near future. The nearby Cap Haitien airport recently expanded and the government of the country has earmarked this area, home to the UNESCO landmark, the Citadelle Laferrière, as ripe for tourism development. WellS— Veteran storyteller Jackson Gillman, known as the StandUp Chameleon, recently appeared in a show for students at Wells Elementary School. Employing a mixture of humor, music, mime, movement and sign language, Gillman entertained the audience with a wide range of tales, many of which allowed for student participation. At one point in the program, Gillman turned to song to sing about a pet rhinoceros. Gillman’s appearance at WES was arranged by school librarian Karen Westerberg. (Reg Bennett photo)

archaeology Volunteers Needed for lab Work at Counting House museum
SOuTH BerWICK – History buffs interested in archaeology have an opportunity this winter to assist Dr. Neill De Paoli processing recently discovered artifacts dating as far back as the mid-1600s. An archaeology “lab” for washing, reconstructing, and
identifying artifacts will be held at the Counting House Museum on Saturday afternoons from noon to 3:30 p.m. throughout the winter. Volunteers are needed and will be trained on the job; no prior experience is needed. “This is an opportunity for a hands-on encounter with his-
torical household objects, tools and building materials used hundreds of years ago,” said De Paoli. “You’ll get a closer look than is ever possible when looking at a museum exhibit. Your assistance in processing these artifacts will also help us get a better understanding of the age, purpose, and identity of the structures we have uncovered on the the Old Fields dig site, so we will be very grateful to participants for their assistance.” Those interested in participating may contact DePaoli for further information at 603-7660561 or ndppquid@yahoo.com. DePaoli, who has devoted most of his career to the study of English settlement and Anglo-Indian and English-French relations in early northern New England, has spent the past two summers overseeing excavations and the Old Berwick Historical Society’s archaeological field school in South Berwick. The Old Fields dig is named for a neighborhood of South Berwick that 330 years ago was a small hamlet of several homes, a tavern, meetinghouse, burial ground, town wharf, and expansive hay fields, De Paoli explained. Historical documents suggest this locale was a fortified garrison during the conflict ridden 1690s and early 1700s. In 1690 and 1691, Wabanaki war parties attacked the Old Fields garrison and two men working in a nearby field, on two separate occasions.
Archaeologist Neill De Paoli, left, and volunteers Laura Wolfer, Ryan Swain and James Kences processed artifacts from the Old Fields Dig at the Counting House Museum in South Berwick. (courtesy photo)
De Paoli will be continuing his search for more evidence of the Spencer home, and tavern along with the as yet elusive garrison (c. 1690-1720) this coming summer with the assistance of his crew of volunteers and an archaeological field school. De Paoli has 35 years of experience as a historical archaeologist, having directed archaeological projects in Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. He is an adjunct professor at Southern Maine Community College. More information about the Old Fields Archaeology Project is available at www.oldberwick.org.
The dig site is the former dwelling and tavern of Humphrey and Mary Spencer who occupied it from c. 1696 until 1727. De Paoli and his team and members of an archaeological field school (2012) uncovered the first evidence of an early structure that appears to be the Spencer home and tavern along with an array of items including glass wine bottles, stoneware jugs and drinking tankards, and clay smoking pipes. They have also unearthed part of a nearby blacksmith shop that was owned by Capt. Ichabod Goodwin and his son, Gen. Ichabod Goodwin, who lived on the property from 1740 until 1829.

...BRIDGE from page 1 into place of the southern end of the bridge was “another milestone” in the project that is on schedule “as far as I know.” He said the pieces of the span are made in Claremont, N.H., and trucked to the state pier in Portsmouth where they are assembled on a barge and then floated down the river into place. While the replacement is being paid for by Maine and New Hampshire there are federal funds involved as well. The 88-year-old bridge was closed to vehicle traffic in July 2011. In January 2012 the New Hampshire Department of Transportation closed it to walkers and bikers with demolition beginning soon thereafter. The bridge was originally opened in 1923 and was designated as a World War I memorial to the soldiers and sailors of New Hampshire who participated in that conflict. A plaque so
designating was mounted on the Portsmouth end of the structure. That construction of the bridge, which began in 1920, was a joint venture of the states of New Hampshire and Maine and the federal government. When completed there will be three bridges spanning the Piscataqua River. These include the Memorial Bridge, the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge on the Route 1 bypass, and the Piscataqua River High Level Bridge that carries Interstate 95. The Sarah Long Bridge is in need of repair and work on it is expected to begin once the Memorial Bridge is carrying traffic again. Just as New Hampshire is taking the lead on the Memorial Bridge project, Maine will be leading the way on the Long project.

auGuSTa – Onlife Health Inc., a national wellness company, and the Maine Education Association Benefits Trust (MEABT), a not-for-profit, employee welfare benefit plan dedicated to the health of Maine public school employees and their families, recently announced they have partnered to provide wellness programs and services for employees in 600 schools in Maine. The Live On Wellness program created by Onlife Health is now available to 54,000 school employees and their eligible dependents across the state. “With hectic and highly structured schedules, many teachers find it difficult to focus on their own health and wellness,” said Christine F. Burke, executive director of MEABT. “By partnering with Onlife Health to offer an integrated wellness plan, MEABT can work to ensure that Maine’s public school teachers and personnel continue to be role models for their students not just in the classroom but also by leading healthy lifestyles.” MEABT said that in the first three months employees have completed more than
up to $150. To help provide a more accurate picture of the person’s overall health, including risk for certain diseases and medical conditions, Onlife Health brings the participant’s healthcare provider into their overall wellness plan.

~ News ~ The american red Cross Celebrates Black History month maINe – February is Black History Month and the American Red Cross is celebrating the contributions of African Americans to the Red Cross mission and legacy. African Americans have shared in the humanitarian work of the American Red Cross since its founding in 1881. From Frederick Douglass to Dr. Jerome H. Holland to everyday working volunteers and staff, African Americans were and continue to be supporters, contributors, and change makers in the Red Cross organization. Clara Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross, met Frederick Douglass shortly after the Civil War in 1865. Barton’s

assistance to African American soldiers during the war was well known, especially her assistance to the all-black Massachusetts 54th Regiment, which had been recruited by Frederick Douglass. The bravery of the soldiers of the 54th Regiment was well documented and formed the basis for the 1991 film “Glory.” Barton and Douglass forged a friendship that lasted many years. Douglass lent his support as one of the founding members of the American Red Cross. His name appears on the 1882 United States Ratification of the Geneva Convention, signed by President Chester A. Arthur. The legacy of Jerome H.
Holland, African American educator, businessman, author, civil rights proponent, diplomat and 1985 Presidential Medal of Freedom winner, lives on through his mission of helping to provide the safest blood possible to those in need. The American Red Cross Jerome H. Holland Laboratory for the Biomedical Sciences is named in his honor. Holland was the driving force behind the current phase of biomedical research and development at the Red Cross; the national center for biomedical research and development. A true visionary, Holland recognized the importance of blood research and the benefits it
could bring to human health. The Holland Lab continues his legacy today through the American Red Cross Research and Development Program. African Americans continue to contribute significantly to the work of the Red Cross. Leaders such as Gwendolyn T. Jackson, Red Cross National Chairman of Volunteers, 19891991, helped pave the way for generations to come. African Americans continue to work and volunteer in leadership positions at the American Red Cross. For more information, please visit redcross.org or join our blog at http://blog.redcross. org.

Performance Reference Bureau, roughly 10 percent of the 15.3 million opposite-sex unmarried cohabiting partners in the United States are between the ages of 55 and 64, while 15 percent are between the ages of 45 and 54. Such figures indicate that living together as an unmarried couple is no longer exclusive to younger couples. The incentives for older, unmarried couples to cohabitate are similar to those for younger ones, but older couples should heed a few financial pointers before deciding to move in together. Iron out the financial details ahead of time. Young couples who move in together often do so as a precursor to getting married. Such couples do not typically have much in the way of financial assets and, as a result, do not need to come to any formal agreement regarding their finances. Older couples, however, might be bringing a more substantial financial portfolio into the relationship, and these finances can complicate

Are You Headed for a Heart Attack or Stroke? February is American Heart Month – a month dedicated to increasing awareness of heart disease and the importance of heart health. Cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke, is responsible for one in every three deaths in this country. There are preventable and treatable health issues that increase your chances of developing cardiovascular disease. Do you smoke or use tobacco products? If you answered “yes,” quitting is the best thing you can do. Do whatever it takes to quit. Talk with your health-care provider or look for a hospital stop-smoking program and/ or support group. What about your body’s numbers? High blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, elevated unhealthful cholesterol (LDL) and low healthful cholesterol (HDL) increase your risk for heart attack and stroke. Talk to your doctor about screening tests. Are you overweight or obese? According to the American Heart Association, between 60 and 70 percent of Americans are either overweight or obese. Too much weight raises your risk for heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. Increase your activity level (check with your doctor to make sure you are healthy enough to begin an exercise program) and eat a heart healthful diet. And what about stress? Your mental health is vital to your physical health…specifically, your cardiovascular health. If you struggle with stress, anxiety, or depression, speak with your doctor about ways to manage these risks with counseling or medical therapy. Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, massage, yoga, tai chi, prayer, soothing music, or pet therapy can help. Finally, there is one ‘magic prescription’ that could help to treat all these risks–exercise. If you’re not doing it, you’re missing out on so many benefits. Also, if you’re not doing it, you’re actually increasing your risk for heart attack and stroke. So, after checking with your physician to be sure you are healthy enough to exercise, DO IT! Do something you enjoy like walking, swimming, or even dancing! Try exercising with a friend,

SMMC and Goodall Hospital Host Legislative Breakfast
BIddeFOrd – Area legislators, including Sen. David Dutremble (DArundel), Rep. Barry Hobbins (D-Saco), Rep. Megan Rochelo (D-Biddeford) and Rep. Alan Casavant (D-Biddeford) joined executives and board members from Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC), Goodall Hospital and MaineHealth earlier this week for a breakfast hosted by the two hospitals. The focus of their round-

table discussion was access to health care in York County and how the planned merger between SMMC and Goodall in 2014 and the state’s hospital debt will affect health care delivery in the future. SMMC and Goodall previously announced their plan to merge by Jan. 1, 2014. The new health care system, called Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC), will be the largest health care provider and largest employer in York County with approximately 2,500 employees. “By combining our resources, SMMC and Goodall will be better able to meet the growing health care needs of York County,” said Patsy Aprile, president and CEO of Goodall Hospital. SMMC/SMHC President and CEO Ed McGeachey also noted, “As SMHC, we will improve the health of our communities and increase access to quality care while working to hold down rising costs.” During breakfast, the group discussed how the state’s hospital debt has limited the organizations’ abilities to invest in services. ...HEART from page 15 activity. What is the moral of this story? Don’t be the next statistic. One in every three individuals in this country will die from cardiovascular disease. You can make a difference and reduce your risk. Talk to your doctor to identify your risks and to create a plan to address them. This information was provided by York Hospital’s Living Well Center. For more information, call 207-351-3700.
Do you have skin discoloration or prominent varicose or ropy veins? These could be symptoms of Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI), a medical condition where the veins that pump blood to the heart become impaired. If left untreated, CVI can get worse over time. Take control of your health. There are effective, minimally invasive treatment options available right here at York Hospital that are covered by many insurance plans.
Interventional Radiologist Joseph Ullman, MD, General Surgeon Philip Anderson, MD and Plastic Surgeon Sarah Holland, MD are experienced vein specialists on staff at York Hospital and offer treatments and techniques to treat CVI. How to Get Rid of Knee Pain Once and for All... Without Drugs, Shots, or Surgery Now, in Kittery, ME, one doctor is helping local residents with knee pain live more active, pain-free lives.
Do You Have Any of the Following Conditions? • • • •
Arthritis • Knee pain Cartilage damage • ‘Bone-on-bone’ Tendonitis • Bursitis Crunching and popping sounds
Could This Noninvasive, Natural Treatment Be the Answer to Your Knee Pain?
Living with knee pain can feel like a crippling experience. Let’s face it, your knees aren’t as young as they used to be, and playing with the kids or grand-kids isn’t any easier either. Maybe your knee pain keeps you from walking short distances or playing golf like you used to. Nothing’s worse than feeling great mentally, but physically feeling held back from life because your knee hurts, and the pain just won’t go away! My name is Dr. Jeff Donatello, owner of York Chiropractic Health Center. Since we opened 18 years ago, we’ve seen hundreds of people with knee problems leave the office pain free. If you’re suffering from these conditions, a new breakthrough in medical technology may completely eliminate your pain and help restore normal function to your knees.
I’m running a very special offer where you can find out if you are a candidate for K-laser therapy. What does this offer include? Everything I normally do in my “Knee Pain Evaluation.” Be one of the first 25 callers and here’s what you get... • An in-depth consultation about your problem where I will listen... really listen... to the details of your case. • A complete neuromuscular examination. • A thorough analysis of your exam and findings so we can start mapping out a plan to being pain free. • A treatment with the K-laser on your knee. You’ll see everything first hand to find out if this amazing treatment will be your pain solution – like it has been for so many other patients. The first 25 callers can get everything I’ve listed here for only $39. The normal price for this type of evaluation is $250, so you’re saving a considerable amount by taking me up on this offer. Remember what it was like before you had knee problems, when you were pain free and could enjoy everything life had to offer. It can be that way again.
Finally, You Have an Option Other Than Drugs or Surgery
Using a K-laser (Class 4 laser) is an outpatient, nonsurgical procedure, often used in physical therapy and sports medicine to accelerate the healing process. It offers a noninvasive treatment to promote healing for those who suffer from pain in muscles, nerves, and joints, like that associated with chronic knee pain. This same laser is used by professional sports teams including the New York Yankees and Cincinnati Bengals.
It Promotes Rapid Healing of the Injured Tissues
This pain-free, nonsurgical approach works by stimulating the body’s natural healing process, providing pain relief and reducing injury damage. This leadingedge technology has an impressive success rate of returning patients to work, sports and competitive activities, as well as everyday life. Patients treated with the K-laser often show a higher level of function, both during and after the treatment period. The therapeutic laser provides a tremendous alternative for those facing surgery.

Due to the expected demand for this special offer, I urge you to call us at York Chiropractic Health Center at once at 207-438-9339 so we can get started with your consultation and exam as soon as possible.
Yours in Health, Dr. Jeff Donatello, D.C. P.S. Now you might be wondering...
Is This Safe? Are There Any Side Effects?
The FDA has cleared the K-laser as safe. This was after their study found 76% improvement in patients with knee pain. Their only warning: Don’t shine it in your eyes. Of course, at our offi ce, the laser is never anywhere near your eyes and we’ll give you a comfortable pair of goggles for your safety. Don’t wait and let your knee problems get worse, disabling you for life. Take me up on my offer and call today! 207-438-9339

~ News ~ roses are the romantic Choice Sentinel Staff Report YOrK – Men claim they just don’t know what women want. Laura Kennedy can tell them, at least when it comes to Valentine’s Day gift giving. “The rose is the standard,” said Kennedy, “but it is also what women want.” Kennedy, who has owned the York Flower Shop, 241 York St., the past 18 years, termed roses “the classic seller” for the holiday. “And red is always the big color,” she noted. “It is very
romantic and it means love.” But some romantics are opting for roses in colors that are less traditional yet beautifully feminine. “Some of our customers are buying peach and deep pink, light pink, and cream. And even pink with a green edge,” Kennedy said. While color may be the foremost factor in a customer’s mind, Kennedy works behind the scenes to see that pleasure in that floral gift of love is not fleeting. “We choose the varieties of roses that last the lon-
gest and that are big opening.” Rosebuds that look lovely on Valentine’s Day but fail to burst into gorgeous, showy blooms may have been mishandled in shipping. “They were probably held too long without water in transit,” she explained. Roses from York Flower Shop are arranged with “fabulous fillers and greens that are more unusual,” Kennedy said. While weather downturns can affect the availability of roses, Kennedy is confident that this year’s supply will be
ample. “We have been assured of terrific availability,” she said. A gift of a dozen longstemmed roses will set the giver back about $75 this Valentine’s Day, Kennedy said. But there are plenty of stunning options for expressing one’s affection at a more budget-friendly price point. “We can make beautiful spring bouquets,” she said, noting that Dutch flowers – tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and others – can be arranged to suit individual needs. “$20, $40, even $50. Whatever you want
WS
to spend.” Arrangements of tropical flowers also have exotic appeal at Valentine’s Day. “Romantic big orchids, branches, unusual foliage, bird of paradise,” said Kennedy, ticking off some of the options. But not all flowers destined for Valentine’s Day gift giving need to come from faraway locales. “Local greenhouses grow flowers that are just stunning,” Kennedy said. A favorite, she said, are locally grown lilies that are both lovely in appearance and wonderfully fragrant.

Governor lePage announces launch of ‘Open Checkbook’ Transparency Website
The Easy-To-Use Web Portal Provides Mainers Unprecedented Access to State Budget Information auGuSTa – Governor Paul R. LePage has launched the State of Maine’s new financial transparency website providing Mainers access to basic, easy to understand information regarding state finances and government spending. The Governor announced the new website in his State of the State address Tuesday night. “Open Checkbook gives Mainers information about how their hard-earned taxpayer dollars are used by government by taking budget data out of government file cabinets and making it available to the public for the first time in an easy-to-access way,” Governor LePage said. Through the new Maine Open Checkbook website, individuals will initially be able to research the details of state expenditures, including vendor payments and employee compensation. Next year the State plans to expand the service

to include revenue data and other detail related to expenses. Future enhancements are planned to include expanded analytics with graphs and comparative reports. “The public has a right to view, understand, and track how their tax dollars are being spent,” said State Controller, Terry Brann. “This website is a big step forward for the State of Maine. It provides clear, comprehensive information and puts it in the hands of our citizens.” Maine Open Checkbook is built on more than 5 million data records. The site is designed to allow users to easily find the information they need using various search criteria. Organization, vendor / employee, fund type, category, or any combination of the four can sort financial data results. Details surrounding vendor payments will be uploaded to the website every month and employee compensation, including salary information and benefits, will be updated on an annual basis. The new website, www. maine.gov/opencheckbook, was developed at no cost to

However, recent strong growth in package delivery (14 percent volume increase since 2010) and projections of continued strong package growth throughout the coming decade led to the revised approach to maintain package delivery six days per week. “Our customers see strong value in the national delivery platform we provide and maintaining a six-day delivery schedule for packages is an important part of that platform,” said Donahoe. “As consumers increasingly use and rely on delivery services — especially due to the rise of e-commerce — we can play an increasingly Maine taxpayers and was created by the Maine State Controllers Office, in partnership with the state’s e-government portal provider, InforME. vital role as a delivery provider of choice, and as a driver of growth opportunities for America’s businesses.” Once implemented in August, mail delivery to street addresses will occur Monday through Friday. Packages will continue to be delivered six days per week. Mail addressed to P.O. boxes would continue to be delivered on Saturdays. Post offices currently open on Saturdays will remain open on Saturdays. According to the report issued by Rizzo, market research conducted by the Postal Service and independent research by major news organizations indicate that nearly seven out of 10 Americans (70 percent) supported the switch to five-day delivery as a way for the Postal Service to reduce costs in its effort to return the organization to financial stability. Support for this approach will likely be even higher since the Postal Service plans to maintain six-day package delivery, the report indicated. The Postal Service made the announcement more than six months in advance of implementing a five-day mail delivery schedule to give residential and business customers time to plan and adjust. According to Rizzo, the Postal Service plans to publish specific guidance in

the near future for residential and business customers about its new delivery schedule. Given the ongoing financial challenges, the Postal Service Board of Governors last month directed postal management to accelerate the restructuring of Postal Service operations in order to strengthen Postal Service finances. “The American public understands the financial challenges of the Postal Service and supports these steps as a responsible and reasonable approach to improving our financial situation,” said Donahoe. “The Postal Service has a responsibility to take the steps necessary to return to longterm financial stability and ensure the continued affordability of the U.S. Mail.” The operational plan for the new delivery schedule anticipates a combination of employee reassignment and attrition and is expected to achieve cost savings of approximately $2 billion annually when fully implemented. The Postal Service is currently implementing major restructuring throughout its retail, delivery and mail processing operations. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

Twelve months of local “Yarn Bombing”
YOrK – Each month The Yarn Sellar, a yarn shop in York, will select a local business to “Yarn Bomb.” Wikipedia defines Yarn Bombing as a type of graffiti or street art that employs colorful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fiber rather that paint or chalk. The task at hand is intended to bring awareness to the fiber arts as well as to provide
support the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). At the beginning of each month, The Yarn Sellar will post the location of the display on Facebook. The “Bomb” will be set up for one month and then refashioned into cat beds for the SPCA located in Kennebunk. February’s “Yarn Bomb” is displayed at The York Harbor
Inn at 480 York Street in York Harbor. This month’s “Bomb” is sponsored by Berroco, a manufacturer of knitting yarn. You can enter to win a monthly prize also. Berroco has donated ten hanks of yarn and a pattern booklet of knitting projects for the month of February. More information can be found at www.YarnSellar.com or 207-351-1987.
~ ask The Computer lady ~ dear Computer lady, A friend suggested I install Infranview to edit pictures. When I Google Infranview all that comes up is IRFANVIEW. This friend sent me a link to her picture editing program and it definitely show Infranview but this page shows a list of sponsors for editing pictures. Whether I try to download Infranview or Irfanview, my AVG virus program comes up and advises against the downloads, one stating that it is a relatively new program, and the other attempt simply would not let me do the download. This friend has highly recommended her picture editing program and I would love to have it . Thanks for your help. Diz (Maine)
combining images. You can find Irfanview at: http://www.irfanview.com Here is a direct link to download it: http://www.irfanview. info/files/iview435_setup.exe My AVG is happy with that download. When I want to use more powerful image editing features, I use a free, open source program called, Gimp which is available at: http://www.gimp. org/ Gimp is a very powerful image editing program similar to expensive programs like Photoshop. If you are not familiar with image editing programs, the Gimp website has some tutorials, and you can usually find a tutorial for what you want to do with a simple Google search. Elizabeth
dear diz, I have not heard of Infranview, but I have used Irfanview for more than 10 years and I think it is a great program. I did an online search for the program you are looking for, but all I found was various websites that look like they were set up to take advantage of people who were searching for Irfanview, but spelled it wrong. The program, Irfanview is a great little program for viewing images and doing some basic editing. When you view a folder full of photos using Irfanview, you just open the first image, and can quickly go from one image to the next using the space bar on your keyboard. I also like to use it to crop, resize and convert my images, but it is not as good at adding text or
dear Computer lady, My acer computer started acting very oddly, the screen went dark, and various places on the screen said my computer was counterfeit, together with many threats that if I didn’t fix it all kinds of terrible things would happen. Is this a scam or real? Julia dear Julia, It sounds like you have been infected with some malware. There are lots of malware infections that try to convince you that something is wrong with your computer, and you need to pay their “company” in order to fix the problem. I have seen malware that tells you that you are infected, or that you have an illegal copy of Windows, and there is

even an “FBI warning” going around recently. None of these are legitimate, and if you do attempt to pay them, you have just given your credit card information to crooks. Once you have been infected with these malware programs, it can be a bit tricky to get rid of them. I sometimes have success with Malwarebytes and AVG Internet Security, but these malicious programs can sometimes do so much damage to your computer that the only solution is to backup your files and do a clean install of Windows. Ninety percent of the time when a customer brings me a computer infected with this type of malware, I can get it out without having to do a clean install. Elizabeth dear Computer lady, Could you please instruct me as to how to delete sent messages? I have so many. I would like to keep some for a record, could I do that? Thanks so much, Darlene dear darlene, Since you didn’t mention what e-mail program you were using, I almost deleted your e-mail without answering it. I noticed, however, that your e-mail address was with Gmail, so I am going to take a guess that you are using Gmail’s online interface for your email. To delete your sent messages in Gmail, click on “Sent Mail” in the left column. This will display the contents of your sent message folder. If you want to get rid of them all, you can click on the small check box just above the
list of messages. This selects all the messages on the current page. As soon as you select all the messages on the page, a message will appear near the top of the list with a link for you to click if you want to select all the messages in your folder. Click this link to select all your sent messages, then click the trash icon at the top of the window. If you want to keep some of your sent messages, it is easy to go through the folder and delete only some of the messages. If you are only keeping a few messages, click on the check box at the top of the page, to select all the messages on that page, then click the check box for each message you want to keep to unselect that particular message. When you have the messages you want to delete selected, click the trash can icon at the top of the window. Elizabeth dear Computer lady, How do I go about reformatting a Seagate external hard drive to use on my new laptop? I was using it with my XP desktop. Thanks, Shirley dear Shirley, It is actually pretty easy to format an external hard drive, but I do have to stress that when you do this, everything on the drive will be erased. As long as you have the files on the external hard drive stored someplace else and you are ready to format it (and erase it in the process) let’s get started. First, plug the drive into your new laptop. I am guessing that it is a USB connection, so
you would plug the USB cable from the hard drive into your laptop. Now open your “My Computer” window. You should see your external hard drive listed with your other drives. Note: Make sure you are working on the external hard drive, and NOT your local drives. If you are in doubt, unplug the external hard drive and make a note of which drive is gone from the “My Computer” window. Right click on the external hard drive, and click on “Format...” in the context menu that appears. A formatting dialog box will open. Just click the “Start” button near the bottom. A warning dialog box will appear, asking you if you are sure you want to erase everything on the disk. If you are sure, click the “OK” button and your disk format will start. Keep in mind, that a large disk might take a few hours before the format is finished. Elizabeth Comments: Posted By: Ron007 In Response to: Screen is Upside Down Comment: I agree, you have the most likely cause identified. Another workaround requires ‘thinking outside of the box,’ literally. Plug in an external monitor and flip the monitor upside down. ~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WellS – In a society where everyone wants kittens, adult kitties who are shy, or older, or have special needs often sit on the sidelines, waiting for attention and loving homes. One of the greatest rewards in our work is finding homes for those kitties – the ones who need a home more than ever. Being a No-Kill organization that rescues all kitties, including those with special needs, teaches us the responsibility we owe to all cats. It changes us for the better, and opens up our world to meet remarkable people. We’ve met so many wonderful people who’ve adopted handicapped, feral and elderly kitties from Safe Haven. Time after time, they prove that NoKill is possible, and that the human heart is alive and ticking. The other wonderful people we meet are our volunteers, who work with our kitties every day and night, helping them get ready for their forever home, then finding that perfect match. Working with shy kitties, and encouraging older kitties are rewarding experiences. Many of us wish we had more

time for it, so we’ve decided to make time for it. We’re creating a special night just for this at our Adoption Center. Monday nights from 5 to 8 p.m., join us for Maverick Mondays! What’s a maverick? Our vet, Dr. Chris Angelos, humorously refers to our shy and feral kitties as “mavericks.” The name stuck and we love it. The word “feral” can be off-putting, scary and confusing. But the word maverick really does describe their independent personalities. Feral cats need not be feared or dismissed. They simply need patience, love and confidence. Our volunteers will be hanging out to play with our mavericks and teach them new games to help them gain confidence. We hope you’ll want to learn more about this new program and join in. One well-known and much-loved Safe Haven “maverick” is Itty Bitty. Just say her name and every volunteer laughs or smiles. Itty Bitty is definitely an independent thinker – until it comes to cat treats. Then suddenly she becomes Little Miss Congeniality. Itty Bitty has the most adorable face you’ve ever seen. She’ll watch everything going on from afar until meal time, when suddenly she comes forward and pays attention to us. Cat treats are the best way to train and befriend her. But she’s also quite responsive to all attention paid to her if done routinely, so the more attention the better. Come meet Itty Bitty 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. We’ll supply you with treats to help win her over. She’ll have you laughing in no time. Blue is an 8-year old American Shelter Dog looking for a new home. He would prefer being the only pet in a home, but would be happy to share a new home with active children of all ages. Blue is playful, comedic, super affectionate boy who loves to cuddle. He has all the necessary qualities for a great family dog. Blue would love to get regular walks and plenty of playtime with his new people. If you’d like to add Blue to your family, then stop on by the shelter today to meet him. Snickers Meet Snickers, a 5-year old cat who will bring love and laughter to any home he becomes a part of. Snickers is a very loving fellow who enjoys getting attention from everyone he meets. He enjoys attention so much that if you happen to stop petting him, he’ll wave his paw at you in an effort to regain your attention. It’s the most adorable little quirk. Snickers is very friendly and would be happy to share a new home with other cats. While he’s always looking for attention, Snickers is otherwise very laid-back and likes to take things easy. He may smack around a toy every once in a while, but he can usually be found enjoying a nap in a cozy
spot. There’s little doubt that Snickers will enhance practically any home. If you’d like to adopt Snickers, stop by the shelter today to meet him. OGUNQUIT – The Classic Film Series sponsored by Ogunquit Performing Arts continues its 12th season with the presentation of “Green Mansions” at the Great Hall of the Dunaway Center, 23 School St., in Ogunquit on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2 p.m. Admission is free and there’s free popcorn for all. “Green Mansions,” the 1959 American romantic adventure film directed by Mel Ferrer, is based on the 1904 novel of the same name written by William Henry Hudson. The film stars Audrey Hepburn, who at the time was married to Ferrer, in the role of Rima, a jungle girl who falls in love with Abel, played by Anthony Perkins as a Venezuelan fleeing revolution in his country. Also appearing in the film are Lee J. Cobb, Sessue Hayakawa, and Henry Silva. Considered the finest aspects of the film are the lush forest visuals, the luminous portrayal of Rima by Hepburn, and the beautiful musical score, composed specifically for the film by renowned Brazilian composer Heitor VillaLobos, and adapted by Bronislau Kaper. The music of “Green Mansions” was later arranged by the composer into a concert suite entitled “Forest of the Amazon,” Villa-Lobos’ last major work. The film opens as Abel (Perkins), narrowly escapes Caracas, Venezuela, after it is overtaken by rebels. He is seeking revenge, as his father the former Minister of War was killed. In search of gold
to fund his plans, he travels deep into the jungles where he is nearly killed by a leopard, but saved by the native people. Against their recommendations, Abel ventures into the nearby “Forbidden Forest” where he catches sight of an ethereal beautiful young girl who quickly disappears. The next day he returns to the forest and sees this lovely girl, but is bitten by a snake before reaching her. The girl, Rima (Hepburn), takes Abel to her home and treats his wound. The film continues with their adventures with her grandfather, Nuflo (Lee J. Cobb), and their eventual flight through the forest, pursued by the native tribesmen who believe Rima to be an evil spirit. Ferrer traveled to South America to select possible locations, but eventually concluded that the jungles there were too dense and dark to allow for filming. While he was there he did film jungle footage south of Orinoco and in the Parahauri Mountains, much of which was incorporated into the final film. The action sequences were filmed on indoor stages at Lone Pine, California. Ferrer had several snakes and birds native to the Venezuelan jungle captured and shipped to Hollywood for use in filming. He also brought a baby deer to the residence he shared with Hepburn, and they raised it for several months prior to filming so that it could be used in several scenes

Gregg’s first assignment as a new game warden was in the southernmost part of Maine, where he was assigned to the Kittery District. His upbringing in a rural part of Maine did not hinder his ability to settle in and meet the challenges of a highly populated area of the state. Gregg’s ability to develop meaningful relationships within local communities and within the law enforcement community became one of his hallmarks. He believed in the mission of the Maine Warden Service and he used every available resource to not only meet those goals, but also to broaden and enhance them. Gregg met his wife, Deb (Currier), and their son, David, of South Berwick, and were married in 1994. Ted Short, current chief of police in Eliot and retired Maine State Police lieutenant, stated, “When I met Warden Sanborn, the new district warden in the Kittery area, it was instantly clear that he was proud to be a Maine Game Warden. From that moment on, we worked, snowmobiled, and hunted together, but above all else, Gregg became a trusted friend. We chose our respective professions to make a difference and Gregg truly did”. In 1993, Warden Sanborn transferred from the Kittery District to the Sebago District, which is one of the busiest districts in the state. Fellow Game Warden Neal Wykes and Gregg instantly became effective coworkers and best friends. Warden Wykes stated, “Gregg became a good and
loyal friend. You will not meet a more dedicated game warden than Warden Sanborn.” Warden Sanborn’s professionalism and demeanor enabled him to affect positive change not only with his co-workers, but also within the sporting community. Nat Berry IV was Gregg’s lieutenant at the time he patrolled the Kittery and Sebago Districts. Lt. Berry stated, “To my surprise, Gregg settled in and patrolled the districts with more enthusiasm than I had ever seen in the busiest and most populated districts in the State of Maine. Gregg had a knack of interacting with the public and at the same time he wrote more summons and warnings than any warden before or after him and the amazing part was he never generated a letter of complaint. Gregg continued living and patrolling the Sebago district until he was promoted to sergeant in November 1997. His career as a sergeant started in Calais until he transferred to Lincoln where he, Deb and David moved into their first home. Gregg’s lieutenant while working in the Lincoln area was Pat Dorian. According to Lt. Dorian, “Gregg had extraordinary common sense and had a gift for reading a person’s body language. He had a keen sense of fairness and he believed in doing what was right for the entire agency. He could look at the big picture and understand how it would impact the Maine Warden Service.” In August 2004, Gregg was promoted to major and was assigned to Augusta. As major, Gregg was in a position that afforded him the opportunity to affect the direction of the agency. Maj. Sanborn worked tirelessly to uphold professional standards and to ensure that the agency was meeting the demands of a changing social and economic environment. He was very proud to have re-established the five divisions within the state. He played a key role in obtaining the resources to modernize the department’s equipment and technological capabilities. As a major, he understood that the heart and soul of the See SANBORN page 34...

~ News ~ Celebrity Chefs Prepare asian Stir Fry WellS – To break up lunchtime routine and increase awareness and participation in the WellsOgunquit Community School District’s lunch program, the School Nutrition Services offers Celebrity Chef Day several times per year. Expanding on former themes such as ‘A Taste of Mexico’ or a ‘Taste of Italy,’ guest chefs from the district and/or community work to prepare made-to-order stir fry featuring a wide variety of ingredients. In January, ‘A Taste of
Asia’ was featured in the cafeterias of Wells High School and Wells Junior High School. At the high school, teacher Andy Lopez and School Nutritional Services Director Tyler Goodwin cooked on gas burners to serve 160 hot meals. At WJHS, 225 were served by Goodwin, Principal Chris Chessie and Assistant Principal Bob Griffin. Goodwin said that while he and the celebrities cook out front and take special orders, his food service staff prepare the ingredients. According to Goodwin there is no extra charge to
attend a Celebrity Chef Day. At ‘A Taste of Asia,’ students had a choice of many fresh ingredients including water chestnuts, scallions, peppers, snow peas, onions, and mushrooms to go along with chicken and brown rice. Throughout lunchtime, Goodwin reported hearing many positive comments such as, “My favorite lunch,” “Best lunch ever” and “You should do this every day.” Goodwin added, “A lot of work goes into preparing these events which we hold three or four times a year.”
