Angela Pollino
A Touch of Lace
“Twin Towers” with Statue of Liberty,” a lace creation by Ogunquit artist Angela Pollino who won Best of Show a few years after 9/11. This piece took her almost 2 years to finish.
OGUNQUIT Angela Pollino lives in Ogunquit but was born and raised in a small town north of Naples called Isernia. She possesses a very rare talent: she makes Italian lace. Pollino learned this skill starting at the age of eight from some older women in her community who sat in front of their houses working on their lace pieces. The style of lace they taught her is called “Tombolo” also known as bobbin or pillow lace. It is done by crossing and twisting cotton threads that are
wound on wooden bobbins. She fastens the lace design pattern to a firm pillow and secures the lace along the pattern with brass pins. The lace piece is either one continuous work or is made in sections joined together later. One of the pleasures Pollino enjoys most while making lace is the music of the bobbins as they twist, twirl and click together. If she wants to change the tune, she changes the bobbins, each type of wood has its own characteristic sound. The history of “Tombolo” lace is quite interesting. It all
began when the Queen of Spain came to a convent in Isernia for a quiet rest from her duties in Spain. While at the convent she taught the nuns how to make this lace. After her departure the nuns, knowing this was a true art that should be cherished and handed down, recruited young girls and taught them this beautiful handiwork which then became an industry in Italy. Lace became decorations for delicate tablecloths, garments, altar linens, and wedding gowns. These items ended up being sold all over the world! What makes Pollino’s See LACE page 5...
