Town of Wells is Certified Business-Friendly AUGUSTA Governor Paul R. LePage and the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) recently approved the Town of Wells as Maine’s newest “Certified Business-Friendly Community.” Wells joins 25 other Maine cities and towns that have earned “Certified BusinessFriendly” status. Qualifying for the certification requires that a town achieve a heightened level of distinction in its regular dealings with job creators, including such things as first-rate customer-service, effective business collaboration, efficient and affordable licensing and permitting, and active public input.

rich fields and forest that straddle Kittery and Eliot. The successful completion of the three-year community effort to preserve this historic property ensures that its important soils will continued to be farmed by the Johnson family and will be available for farming by future generations. As the last dairy farm in Kittery, Rustlewood maintains an important link to the region’s agricultural past and now provides an on-going opportunity to grow food locally. The easement enhances efforts to protect the water quality of Spruce Creek and the York River. In addition, it safeguards vital habitat for waterfowl and wildlife, including the endangered New England cottontail rabbit. The fields of Rustlewood Farm, stretching out along both sides of Route 101, have long been prized for their scenic beauty. The recent closing makes certain that these fields will remain open vistas and will offer a place for the public to get outside and enjoy recre-

ational activities like walking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. The Rustlewood Farm easement allows and encourages the current and future landowners to continue working this fertile land as an agricultural enterprise. After today, the Johnson family will still own and farm the land of Rustlewood, however, they have given up the rights of development. This restriction will remain in effect no matter who owns the land in the future. KLT hopes that this agriculturally rich soil will continue to be farmed for many generations to come. This conservation project would not have happened without the time, effort, and funds of many, many supporters. KLT is grateful to all those who helped turn this vision into a reality. KLT would first like to thank the Johnson family for choosing to conserve their land, thereby creating an invaluable legacy for our community. They want to acknowledge the

The team’s routine for the competition is timed and set to “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo” by Trans-Siberian Orchestra. “This is a group of 12 very talented young ladies who have been working since November on an extremely difficult show,” shared Smith, who added that the team has been practicing three times per week for this event. It was Smith who was instrumental in getting the winter color guard program started in the District in the winter of 2010. “Going to WGI is a really great opportunity,” commented the team’s captain, Adrienne Perron. “This is the fourth year our school has had a winter guard team, and it’s really cool that we have gotten to the point

I CAN HELP ANYONE LOSE WEIGHT IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT LOSING WEIGHT THIS YEAR

If you were not one of the 33 people that filled up this workshop on January 11th, that’s ok, because I am doing it again next Wednesday at lunchtime. A bunch of those 33 are already starting the first steps to getting their health back on track and watching their weight fall off. One of my patients has lost 16 pounds since January 9th alone. This is gearing up to being our best year ever for weight loss in our office. Read what these people have said about their results. “Your system was the first time any doctor refused to use the word diet with me. I liked the fact that we figured out what is really wrong with me hormonally that led to a life time of weight issues. I have lost weight before, but now after three months of maintaining the loss, I know WHY I was heavy. And best of all I now have the knowledge to avoid what got me this way in the first place. This year has changed my life and I hope you go to Dr. Donatello’s seminar and learn what I learned. It could change your life too.” ~ Ruth K, South Berwick, Maine

“I can honestly say that my life is much better having worked with Dr. Donatello. I am 72 years old and have been taking high blood pressure medicine for 25 years and just got off of it. My medical doctor told me he had never seen this happen before. Dr. Donatello figured out WHY I was having issues with weight. Most importantly he looked at my weight as a symptom of an underlying problem.” ~ Al C., Ogunquit, Maine

Not only can I help you lose weight, I can show you how to keep it off forever! In eighteen years of practice, I have found that helping people lose weight and keep it off is the one single thing that has the potential to create the most numerous changes in overall health problems. “I am happy to say I lost 18 pounds in the first two weeks!” ~ Lisa S., Portsmouth, N.H. If you are like most people, you have probably lost weight in the past only to gain it back and then “When I started with Dr. Donatello, I was a size 16. I some – The old yo-yo dieting syndrome. There is am now a size 8.” ~ Kim L., York, Maine a reason for that and I’ll show you what it is. There is no gimmick or quick fix that will ever make you “For the last couple of years or even longer, I have lose weight permanently. This is the REAL THING! felt tired, no energy, just not myself. I had seen Dr. Donatello’s ad in the paper so I checked him out, I know there is a good chance you are dealing with and here I am three short months later. I now can Type II Diabetes, high blood pressure, high choles- get up in the morning and do so much more. I now terol, hypothyroidism, joint pain and possibly a num- feel alive and I don’t know if I would have been for ber of other health conditions. Come spend one much longer. Definitely do this program! Don’t even hour with me and I’ll show you how you may be hesitate – it’s not that difficult.” ~ Penny McGuire, able to completely rid yourself of Type II Diabe- Grey, Maine tes, and possibly throw away your blood pressure and cholesterol drugs forever. Whether you want to lose that last 10 pounds or you NEED to lose 100 pounds or more, I can show you how to do it.

Life is really good now and the best thing is I have great energy and have kept off the weight. It’s really a good program. You will feel so much better about yourself when you do it.” ~ Norm Vetter, Rochester, N.H.

I have lost close to 60 pounds and I now can actually go out and walk my dog. For the longest time, my feet and knees hurt so much that this was impossible. It may seem like a small thing but to me it makes my day.” ~ Mary S. Somersworth, NH “Looking back, I never realized how sick I really was. Ogunquit Town Manager Reveals Town Improvements

OGUNQUIT The speaker at the Jan. 8 Rotary Club of Ogunquit meeting was Ogunquit Town Manager Tom Fortier and during the meeting he spoke at length about the upcoming sidewalk

project for the town. The project is slated to start in 2015 and the new sidewalks will go all the way south to the shops beyond the Ogunquit Playhouse. Current sidewalk bricks will be repaired as

part of the project. Fortier also explained that the town can expect many other improvements coming their way.

Ogunquit’s Treasurer had secured a government grant of $2 million, which was set aside in an escrow account.

The funds will be used toward the bottom line of $12 million for all of Ogunquit’s upcoming projects. Fortier detailed that several drainage problems will be fixed as well as two bridges on Route 1 and town boundaries.

...WELLS from page 1 cessful application,” said Jonathan Carter, town manager of Wells. Carter spoke of DECD’s communicative effort, which he described as “hands-on.” Governor’s Account Executive Kristine Schuman, as well as Office of Business Development Director Brian Whitney, traveled to Wells to meet with Carter and other town officials to review the town’s application and better understand its economic delivery system. Carter noted that Schuman and Whitney helped him highlight what he described as the town’s “team approach to economic development and its efforts to streamline business permitting and paperwork requirements.” “I am happy and proud to be able to certify the Town of Wells as Business Friendly,” said DECD Commissioner George Gervais. “Clearly, they have gone to great lengths to make the

community an attractive place to create and grow jobs. I commend Jon Carter and his entire team for recognizing and understanding that, as Governor LePage says, ‘investment goes where it is welcome and stays where it is appreciated.’” The “Certified BusinessFriendly” community program started in 2012. Since then, Maine’s list of “Certified Business-Friendly” communities has grown to include: Auburn, Augusta, Bath, Belfast, Biddeford, Brewer, Bucksport, Caribou, Cumberland, Ellsworth, Fairfield, Guilford, Hermon, Kennebunk, Lewiston, Lincoln, Pittsfield, Poland, Presque Isle, Richmond, Saco, Sanford, South Portland, Topsham, Wells, and Westbrook. Each community is awarded a certificate of achievement, two MaineDOT road signs, and becomes a key part of Maine’s business attraction strategy.

Wells Reserve Plan Gains Federal Approval

WELLS The five-year management plan for the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, also known as the Wells Reserve at Laudholm, was approved in December by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The plan will guide the reserve’s science, education, and conservation programs and its other activities through 2018. It can be read during business hours at the organization headquarters at 342 Laudholm Farm Rd. in Wells or downloaded from www.wellsreserve.org/nerr. “The Wells Reserve at Laudholm has a responsibility to serve local communities and to participate in national programs that benefit present and future generations,” said Nik Charov, ...TENNIS from page 1 ceive professional instruction at very minimal cost. Besides the Cutones, Chris Adams, Chip Stephenson, Norm Archer, Trish Thompson, Dave Powell, Danielle Lewia MacDonald, Lindsey Prichard, and others exhibited enthusiasm, a love of the sport of tennis, and an unending dedication to the children of the community throughout the summer program. Steve Cutone sent an email to the program volunteers saying in his typical humble manner, “Just got word that Kennebunkport was named Recreation Department of the Year by Maine Tennis Association. We will be acknowledged at their upcoming annual banquet. A nice and unexpected recognition. Hats off to all of you. Looking forward to another successful summer program.” This prompted Archer to respond, “Great news, Steve. Thanks for sharing, and thanks for being the catalyst for Kennebunkport tennis. Let’s do it again.”

chairman of the Reserve Management Authority, the Wells Reserve’s governing board. “We invite folks to explore the many actions the reserve staff will be taking to fulfill that obligation and to come to us with any questions.” NOAA requires each of the 28 research reserves across the country to develop plans for guiding their programmatic, land management, and facility development activities. The plan must comply with the goals of the national system and with the Coastal Zone Management Act. This is the Wells Reserve’s fourth management plan since

being designated in 1984. Wells Reserve Director Paul Dest, said, “This plan strikes the right balance between meeting local and state research, education, and conservation needs and advancing national coastal management practices.” In the plan, the Wells Reserve identifies five core goals: People appreciate and understand natural environments, make informed decisions, and take responsible actions to sustain coastal communities and ecosystems. Reserve science promotes better understanding of coastal ecosystems, and the results of re-

search are conveyed to decisionmakers to meet coastal management needs. Coastal communities have enhanced capacity to protect, manage, and restore coastal habitats. People understand the effects of climate change on natural and human communities and have the knowledge and tools needed to make informed decisions and adapt to environmental change. The Wells Reserve is a model site and resource for exemplary coastal stewardship that fosters an understanding of the ecological connections among land, water, and people. The plan also contains part-

nership agreements, summaries of rules and laws affecting the reserve, property deeds, and other background information. The Wells Reserve at Laudholm is a 2,250-acre National Estuarine Research Reserve with its headquarters listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The work of the reserve is made possible by a member-supported nonprofit organization, Laudholm Trust, through monetary and in-kind contributions. Laudholm Trust has been soliciting community and staff input for completing a management plan of its own in early 2014, aimed at enhancing the success of the Wells Reserve at Laudholm.

~ Library News ~ York Public Library Presents: A Vietnam Nurse Remembers YORK In recent months, the York Public Library has been marking anniversaries of social and political events of the 1960s; the assassination of President John F Kennedy, landmark legislation for civil rights and desegregation to name a few. Amidst these high profile remembrances and tributes, there are other less public recollections of events and circumstances that were also an integral part of our collective history of the tumultuous 1960’s. Certainly the Vietnam War stands among these lifechanging events. On Feb. 6 at 7 p.m., Barbara Hesselman Kautz will speak at York Public Library recalling her life changing experience as a military nurse in Vietnam. Forty-four years ago this month, York resident, Hesselman Kautz, went to war. A 22-year-old Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Nurse Corps, Hesselman Kautzhad less than six months experience as a graduate nurse when

she was assigned to the 24th Evacuation Hospital in Long Binh, Republic of South Vietnam. There she found herself working on Ward 5, the neurosurgical intensive care unit, thought to be the worst ward in the entire hospital in which to work. Her co-workers included other young nurses and corpsmen, physicians drafted from residencies, and the Ward’s bête noir, “Mighty” Ralph Gooyami. Hesselman Kautz has long forgotten the day to day events of that year. Instead, she remembers distinct stories of specific events that she has woven together to describe her life in

Vietnam. From her newly published memoir, “When I Die I’m Going to Heaven ‘Cause I Spent My Time in Hell,” Hesselman Krautz will read and share other memories about that year in Vietnam. During her talk she will show a few slides and answer questions about nursing in a war zone. Please join on Feb. 6 at 7 pm for this important personal and historical account of a period of 20th Century American events that still profoundly influence our culture today. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the conclusion of Hesselman Kautz’s talk for $15.99.

Fall in Love with “The Sharp Dressed Men Trilogy”

KITTERY This Valentine’s Day, prepare to fall in love with not just one guy, but three: brothers Tom, Henry and George. The trio are the heroes of “The Sharp Dressed Men Trilogy,” a collection of three hilarious and heartwarming comedies by Rye, N.H. native G. Matthew Gaskell. The three plays - “From Now On,” “Sharp Dressed Men,” and “All The Rage” - follow our heroes’ adventures as they nearly destroy a church, discover the perfect hangover cure and find true love. “Imagine that Abbot and Costello were living today and writing farces about three brothers from Rye, New Hampshire,” Stage Force artistic director Kent Stephens says. “That’s Gaskell’s work: completely fresh, antic, and delightful.” Gaskell’s writing magic happens in a rather unexpected location – the front seat of the garbage truck he drives for his day job. While Gaskell is on his route picking up Seacoast residents’ trash, he’s also crafting some of the funniest stuff you’ve seen on a regional stage. “It’s the perfect environment for me, really,” Gaskell says. “I’m productive all day, but at the same time my mind is always free to create.” “Good homegrown comedies - pure comedies - are like palm trees in Central Park, they’re rare and need to be cultivated and cherished,” Stephens says. “Gaskell’s plays are inviting and accessible to audiences who may not be regular theatre-

goers.” Much of the comedy’s appeal comes down to the charm of his three heroes. Youngest brother, Tom, has an off-the-charts IQ, but can’t figure out how to open a bag of bird seed. Middle brother, George, is sweet and clueless as a golden retriever with a head injury, and oldest brother, Henry - played by Gaskell himself - is the glue that holds them all together. On Feb. 14, Kent Stephens’ Stage Force begins a three-week run of the trilogy of shows, which have already proven audience favorites at venues around the

Seacoast. In “From Now On,” Tom and Henry throw a bachelor party in hopes of averting their brother George’s marriage to the dreaded Maggie. “Sharp Dressed Men” finds them averting disaster on the long-awaited day of their parents’ wedding, while in “All The Rage,” George’s Big Day is threatened by an appearance of the dreaded “Box of Pain”. Stage Force’s production will be the first time all three plays have been performed together in repertory, a dream come true for author Gaskell. The same cast of nine appears in each of the plays, which take place on an alternat-

ing schedule on each of the three weekends. Though the stories are interconnected, each play stands alone - which means audiences can enjoy one, or two, or go for all three and turn the weekend into a sort of mini-theatre-festival of comedy. And, while Gaskell’s writing doesn’t hold back from outrageously going for laughs, it also stays G-rated, which makes the shows a great entertainment choice for families as well as singles, or those looking for a fun date night. “These shows are truly loveable, just like their characters,” Stephens says. For an extra $10, a premium ticket for the Valentine’s Day opening night performance of “Sharp Dressed Men” will get you admission to a post-show reception with wine and a mouthwatering “Chocolate Buffet” created by Susan Tuveson, former owner and master chocolatier of Cacao Chocolates. “The Sharp Dressed Men Trilogy” is presented with support from Kennebunk Savings, and is sponsored by Cava and Pickwick Mercantile. The cast features Chris Savage as George, Andy Fling as Tom, and Greg Gaskell as Henry, with Becky Rudolf, Doria Bramante, Jennifer Henry, Dan Beaulieu, Scott Caple, and Meredith Freeman Caple. The shows will be performed on a repertory schedule from Feb. 14 through March 2 at The STAR Theatre. A full schedule of performances is online at stageforce.org. Tickets are $22 to $26, and can be purchased online at KitteryCommunityCenter. org, by phone at 207-439-3800, or in person at the welcome desk at the Kittery Community Center.

OGUNQUIT When blues legend James Montgomery plays the harmonica, he “brings it on home”. Whether it’s recording with Kid Rock, sitting in with Gregg Allman, or fronting his hot band of 30 years, Montgomery plays with authority. While growing up in Detroit he learned first-hand from the masters - James Cotton, John Lee Hooker, and Jr. Wells - at the legendary Chessmate. Over the years, he’s carried on in the tradition and continues to be a vital presence in Blues as one of the most dynamic performers on the scene. James Montgomery and his band will be playing live at Jonathan’s Ogunquit on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 9 p.m. This is Montgomery’s third show in over a year at Jonathan’s Ogunquit. In 1970, while attending Boston University, Montgomery formed the James Montgomery Band. His inimitable harmonica playing combined with his incredibly energetic live shows led to the band’s quick ascension on the New England music scene. Within two years, the James Montgomery band was among the hottest acts in Boston along with J. Geils and Aerosmith, and they were quickly signed to a multi-album deal with Capricorn Records. Montgomery has toured with many major artists, including Aerosmith, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, the Allman Brothers, Steve Miller and others. He has jammed on stage with B.B.King, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Jr. Wells, James Cotton, Charlie Daniels, Laverne Baker, Patti LaBelle, and Peter Wolf among others, including an impromptu session with Mick Jagger at New York’s Trax. Over the years, Montgomery’s band has been a springboard for many musicians. Members of his band have included Billy Squire, Wayne Kramer (MC-5), Jeff Golub (Rod Stewart), Jim McCarty (Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels), Nunzio Signore (Bo Diddley), Jeff Pevar (Ray Charles OrchesSee BLUES page 11...

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Ogunquit OPA Classic Film Series Presents: “Some Like it Hot” OGUNQUIT Don’t miss “one of the most hilarious, raucous films ever made” presented at the S.Judson Dunaway in Ogunquit on Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. As with all films scheduled for the 22nd Season of the “Classic Film Series,” it will be shown on a full wall-size screen using quality projection equipment provided to Ogunquit Performing Arts by Kennebunk Savings Bank. As always admission is free as is the popcorn. “Some Like It Hot” (1959) is an all-time outrageous, satirical, comedy farce favorite. The ribald film is a clever combination of many elements. This great film received widespread critical acclaim. Rotten Tomatoes reports a score of 98 percent, with an average score of 8.9 out of 10. Roger Ebert says about the movie, “Wilder’s 1959 comedy is one of the enduring treasures of the movies, a film of inspiration and meticulous craft.” In 2000, the American Film Institute listed “Some Like It Hot” as the greatest American comedy film of all time. “Some Like It Hot” received six Academy Award nominations including Best Actor (Jack

Logan), Best B/W Cinematography, and Best B/W Art Direction/Set Decoration - with its sole Oscar awarded for Best B/W Costume Design (Orry-Kelly, for costumes including Marilyn Monroe’s shimmering gowns) The current “Classic Film Series” program will continue showing one classic film each month throughout the winter months up to and including May 2014. Donations are appreciated. Ogunquit Performing Arts is a not-for-profit, tax exempt, all volunteer committee of the Town of Ogunquit. For more information, visit ogunquitperformingarts.org.

KITTERY For the month of February, Just Us Chickens will showcase the monotypes of Exeter, N. H. artists, Barbara Cowen and Bill Childs. Their exhibit is entitled “Two Printmakers.” Cowen is known for her watercolor paintings and regional landscapes and seascapes. She also has a long time interest in monotypes and pastels and has studied at the Sharon Arts Center. She is an exhibiting member of the Exeter Arts Committee and the Seacoast Artists Association. Her studio is at her home in Exeter and for many years she has designed the annual Christmas ornaments and related prints for sale in Exeter.

It is such a fun night. We make room for dancing and have a great time enjoying some good

ol’ fashion rock ‘n roll,” states Jonathan West, owner of Jonathan’s Ogunquit. Advance tickets start at $17.50 and day of show tickets start at $21.50. Tickets may be purchased on line at http:// tickets.jonathansrestaurant. com or by calling Jonathan’s Box Office at 207-646-4777.

Much of Bill Childs’ work is an expression of his love for the New Hampshire Seacoast landscape. His work will be on display as part of the “Two Printmakers” February exhibit at Just Us Chickens gallery.

Childs explores landscapes of the New Hampshire seacoast including its fields, marshes and towns in all four seasons. Primarily a watercolorist, he has also worked with the monotype process and pen and ink. A variety of approaches to his landscape and architectural subjects show in some cases a careful approach to detail and description and in others a more expressive use of color and shape. In every instance, his work is a reflection of his love of the places that are familiar and the ones that he continues to find. He is a working member of the New Hampshire Art Association and a member of the Seacoast Artists Association and displays his work regularly at

A Pictures Worth A Thousand Words in Exeter. Both Childs and Cowen love the monotype process. The “Two Printmakers” show will be on display at Just Us Chickens throughout the month of February with an opening reception on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 2 p.m. to 5 pm.

Investors Can Learn Much from the Super Bowl If you’re a football fan (and probably even if you aren’t), you are aware that we’re closing in

We Understand Bad Things Happen To Good People.

A good offense Most Super Bowl teams are adept at moving up and down the field and crossing the goal line. And good investors know how to choose those investments that can provide them with the gains they need to keep moving toward their own goals, such as a comfortable retirement. That’s why, at every stage of your life, you will need to own a reasonable percentage of growth-oriented investments, such as stocks and stock-based vehicles. A strong defense Even a good offense usually isn’t enough to vault a team into the Super Bowl, which is why most participants in the big game also have strong defenses. Similarly, the best investors don’t just put all their

money in a single type of aggressive instrument and then forget about it — they know that a downturn affecting this particular asset class could prove extremely costly. Instead, they “defend” their portfolios by diversifying their holdings among a range of investments: stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit, and so on. And you can do the same. Keep in mind, however, that although diversification can help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio, it can’t guarantee a profit or always protect against loss. Health & Fitness How to Keep Your Kids Active During Winter Months As the holidays wind down, so do the temperatures. As a parent, you know your kids can get restless in the winter months while they’re cooped up inside. It’s tempting to let the tablets and video games provide hours of entertainment, but it’s important that kids stay active to keep their minds and bodies healthy. With a little creativity, you can keep your kids moving and prevent the winter blues. Here are some ideas:

Take out throwback games After hours of being indoors, kids will quickly get bored of their own games and toys. Take this opportunity to teach them games from your childhood. Create an indoor hopscotch court with some tape or break out that old board game from the attic. Make up new rules to refresh the games and make them original to your family. Record the game ideas in a notebook or binder so your kids can easily pick out a fun

activity on the next snow day. Cook together Cooking is a great activ-

ity because the whole family can get involved. Assign everyone a job, like peeling, mixing or measuring. Kids can even practice their reading skills by reading the recipe aloud from a

cookbook. Cooking with children also encourages them to try new foods because they’ve had a hand in making the finSee ACTIVE page 15...

...ACTIVE from page 13 ished product. Tackle that big project You may have spring cleaning plans, but get a head start on that big cleanout project this winter. Get the whole family involved in reorganizing the garage or painting the guest room. Go through old boxes or pictures with your kids and share family memories along the way. Give your kids different tasks and let them be “in charge” of different parts of the project. Once the project is complete, you will all feel satisfied that you worked together and checked a big to-do off the list. Go on an indoor adventure Sometimes the cabin fever is too much to bear and you have to get out of the house. As long as the weather allows for safe travel, bundle up the kids and hop in the car in search of an indoor adventure. Find an indoor pool at a local recreation center. Take a trip to an indoor ice skating or roller skating rink. You can also start a bowling tournament with other families from school or the neighborhood. After the chilly trip outside to the car, you’ll all be longing for your warm house in no time. Once you get home, relax together with a nutritious snack and pair it with a fun beverage. ~ Pets ~ Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Meet Dancer This lovely young Walker Hound came in to ACAR after being pulled from a North Carolina high-kill shelter. We believe that Dancer was working when she and the handler lost track of each other, making Dancer fair game for a loose dog pickup by animal control. Dancer is spayed, her vaccinations are current and she is so ready for a loving New England family to call her very own. Dancer is a sweet young lady, about one-and-a-halfyears old. Dancer is extremely well behaved, with excellent manners and a very happy disposition. She is wonderful with children of all age groups, and other family members, especially men. Dancer will also do well with dogs and resident cats. If you think that you are the family that would like to add this charming, gentle angel to your circle, please contact ACAR at 207-676-9330 for additional information, or drop by the adoption center at 37 Market Street in North Berwick

to file an application, In addition to sweet Ms. Dancer, our featured pet of the week, we still have an extremely limited number of young kittens, a good number of young adult cats, and a large number of adult cats still looking to you for loving homes and families.

Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Lola and Harper When you walk into the office at Safe Haven’s Adoption Center you’ll see the adorable merry face of torti, Lola, greeting you and her best friend, Harper, baiting you for affection. Prancing in circles and waving her feathery grey boa-like tail in the air, Harper coaxes you toward her, awaiting your pats and praise. They work as a team these two. Harper lures you over, then Lola stands poised and ready, her remarkably sweet face urging you to make your decision to adopt them. Both arrived together in late fall as owner surrenders. They grieved and were depressed, as cats who are surrendered do for the first few weeks. But after they understood that at Safe Haven they get to do whatever they want, that our volunteer team turn to mush over cute kitties, they settled in nicely. Lola, who is declawed, was understandably hesitant to relax around other kitties. She worried about being attacked and defenseless, but in time, she saw no one was going to harm her. Now

Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK Paws Across America Paws Across America is a national animal transport program that AWS began in 2002. Through the program, we receive adoptable companion animals from other shelters and rescue groups in need of help placing their animals. Due to pet overpopulation, many shelters — particularly in mid-western and southern states — are faced with euthanizing healthy and highly adoptable animals. To date, more than 4,000 dogs, cats and other small animals have found homes through our transport program. Beefcake Meet Beefcake, a fiveyear-old Pit Bull. As you might expect from his name, Beefcake is a touch on the heavy side. He would definitely benefit from being on a weight loss program in a new home, but until then his

weight makes him an adorable looking fellow. Beefcake is a gentle and goofy lug who enjoys pleasing his people. He enjoys chomping down on rawhides and rope toys as well as going for regular walks to help get him in shape. Beefcake would be happy to share a home with some other dogs and respectful children of all ages, but he cannot share a home with cats. This gentle, round fellow will surely enrich any home he becomes a part of.

Chickpea Meet Chickpea, a four-yearold short-haired cat. Chickpea is a darling, yet somewhat reserved, girl. She may need a moment to get used to new people and surroundings, but once she’s comfortable she’ll come out of her shell. She loves having a comfy bed to curl up in or under. She is quite easy going and friendly. Chickpea would be happy

Lola is relaxed and adorable, her mischievous personality shining through her silly antics. She’s now outgoing and inquisitive about exploring beyond the office and hang out in the hallway sink area to see what else she can be a part of. Harper is not declawed, so she’s first to do things. Lola watches her best friend and learns to relax and to trust by seeing Harper enjoying everything around her. When kitties arrive together, we keep them together and find homes together. We never tear apart bonded pairs because we know how sensitive cats are. They don’t like change. Adoptions, although wonderful, are of course a change, and if their buddy accompanies them, it’s much less stressful. Harper and Lola have each had an opportunity to be adopted separately. But we will only adopt them as a pair for their own comfort and health. Both kitties are very precious and beautiful. Because Lola is declawed, she’s very sensitive to her surroundings. When boisterous kitties were added to the office it affected her health. Once her environment was quiet again, she recovered quickly. So we know she requires a

WS

quiet home with a family who’s comforting and takes her personality into consideration. She’s less than two-years old. Her torti markings are exceptionally beautiful and colorful. Her face is full and cinnamon colored -she reminds me of a chipmunk. She’s one of the cutest kitties I’ve ever seen. Harper’s long, silky hair and perfect white markings are beautiful, and her tail is so feathery and full that it flows after her. She, too, is only twoyears old. She’s full of fun, with a clown-like personality and likes to get involved in whatever you’re doing. Together they’re a great combination, and gorgeous. Because we want these kitties to stay together, they’re now in our “Together for Life” program. That means we will waive one adoption fee when you adopt both. We want these cuties to go home to be your Valentines, so come on in and meet them now.

Through it all, these investors stay invested, follow a long-term strategy and continue to look for new opportunities — and their perseverance is often rewarded. You can follow their example by not jumping out of the market when the going looks tough and not overreacting to scarysounding headlines. financial professionals. It’s not always easy for busy people to study the financial markets, stay current on changing investment-related laws, monitor their own portfolios and make changes as needed. By working with a financial professional who knows your situation, needs, goals and risk tolerance, you will find it much easier to navigate the increasingly complex investment world. As we’ve seen, some of the same factors that go into producing a team capable of reaching the Super Bowl are also relevant to investors who want to reach their own goals. By incorporating these behaviors and attitudes into your own investment strategy, you’ll be following a pretty good “game plan.” This article was written by Edward Jones and submitted by Financial Advisor Deb DeColfmacker. SPORTS

Left to right: Marshwood High School’s Garret Robinson, Sophia Syrene, and William Ramsay, are some of the core members contributing to a successful season for the alpine ski team. (courtesy photo)

Marshwood High School’s Alpine Ski Team Enjoying Stellar Season SOUTH BERWICK Despite the often bitter cold weather and light snowfall, this year’s Marshwood High School alpine skiers have been challenging the other teams in the Southern Maine Activities Association (SMAA), taking home wins in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions. The boys’ team has taken first place in all of its first five matches this season and the girls’ team is not far behind, having placed first, second or third in all the events. “What a season we have had so far,” said Coach Andrew “Chandy” Dorais, addressing parents and team members in a recent letter. “We are a tremendous team with loads of depth and wonderful supporting families.” Dorais was very impressed with the team’s performance on the first race. “Korman (assistant coach) and I stood mouth agape after our first race,” he said. “With little training at all together as a team, the boys were able to pull out a win, and showed us early on how deep their team is. These guys are good. “The girls showed us that they are in the hunt this year too. They have been a very close second and third place in each race,” Dorais added. “Last Friday they took first.” Jason Beland and Sophie Syrene have picked off top finishes throughout the year, and strong support from their teammates has lead to a strong overall

team effort this winter. Both the Marshwood skiers and their parents are happy with the progress the team has made from last year. “Last year we had our key seniors, Dakota (Greenblatt) and Hayden (Pearson) both graduating and I wasn’t sure what the team was going to look like, but a bunch of guys have stepped up and filled that void,” said senior Beland. “We seem to be competing just like we were before and that’s inspiring to see everyone get better, putting in lots of effort and showing dedication to the sport. “Races have gone well and I’ve been trying to improve – there’s some other good skiers there and I have to race against them and try and do my best,” he added. Syrene, a junior, is encouraged by her skiing so far this season. Her work has earned her the top spot on the girls’ team. Syrene’s father, John Syrene is impressed by the overall effort of the group. “The season has been challenging due to the weather conditions, but Marshwood Ski team has stood up to the challenge and is performing outstandingly,” he exclaimed. “Sophia has been training hard and it show.” While the Marshwood skiers have been training hard, the weather conditions have made it hard for them to train. “So far, training has been a bumpy road,” Dorais said. “No one could have possibly predicted

the crazy weather, and the snowmaking issues at Wildcat.” Dorias is hoping that with more snowmaking and more open terrain, the team will experience improved conditions and have the chance to train more consistently. With the steep competition in the SMAA, Marshwood understands that they will need all the training they can get. “While we have come out on top often, it is not often by a great margin,” Dorais stated. “Every race is exciting, and getting the results is always a surprise and a thrill for Korman and me.

“From the top down the conference is well organized and quite fun to be a part of,” he added. “Each team has a similar mix of well-polished racers, developing racers, and those new to the sport. Most of the coaches are all of a similar mindset, too.” As the skiing season is a little over the halfway mark, both Marshwood teams are gearing up for the SMAA Alpine Championship at Shawnee Peak on Feb. 7. “I think the boy’s team is still smarting a little bit from their second place finish in the 2013 Conference Championship,” Dorais said. “They have been

skiing like they have something to prove. “With a recent win, the girls team is more determined than ever,” he added. “Hopefully both teams fall into their groove and hit their peak just in time for the SMAA Championships and the State Finals.” As the cold continues to hit southern York County, the Marshwood High School ski team continues to stay hot. If all goes well, they will be able to burn up the competition going forward. This article was written and submitted by David Ramsay of South Berwick.

South Berwick Graduate Receives All-Academic Honors LEWISTON Logan Greenblatt, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Greenblatt of South Berwick, and a member of the men’s cross country team at Bates College, received New England Small College Athletic Conference All-Academic distinction for the fall 2013 season. To receive NESCAC All-

Academic honors, a studentathlete must have reached sophomore academic standing and be a varsity letter winner with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.35. A 2010 graduate of Marshwood High School, Greenblatt is majoring in chemistry and art and visual culture at Bates.

“Bates is fully committed to the student-athlete ideal, and we are very proud of the achievements -- in the classroom, in the community and on the field -- of our student-athletes who received NESCAC fall 2013 All-Academic distinction,” said Kevin McHugh, director of athletics at Bates.

SCOREBOARD

Berwick Academy Girls’ Basketball SOUTH BERWICK -

The Berwick girls basketball team continued on their recent hot streak lately defeating the Middlesex school from Concord, Mass. 60-48 on Jan. 22. This was Berwick’s seventh straight win to improve their record to 12-1 on the season. Berwick came out fast in this one, jumping off to a 24-6 lead after eight minutes of play. The lead expanded to over 20 points before a furious Middlesex run closed the gap to nine points at the half at 32-23. The Lady Bulldogs opened the second half on another tear, building up a comfortable lead. Middlesex again scored late in the half, but time ran out on their efforts for a comeback. Torie St. Pierre, Becca Siegel and Maggie DuChene combined for 43 points between them (18, 17 and 13 points respectively). Dana Brooks scored four points and had a game high eight rebounds in her first varsity start for Berwick.

SOUTH BERWICK -

The Berwick Girls won their

eighth straight game on Jan. 24., beating Bancroft School of Worcester, Mass. 50-37. Berwick is now 13-1 on the season, while Bancroft falls to 6-7. After a slow start, Berwick got things going late in the first half to open up a 29 -17 lead at the break. The Lady Bulldogs increased the lead to over 20 in the second half and cruised home to victory from there. Senior guard Torie St. Pierre led the way for Berwick with 20 points, including six three pointers. Maggie DuChene added eight points, and both Becca Siegel and Suzanna Borg added seven each.

SOUTH BERWICK -

On Jan. 25, the Berwick girls shook off a shaky start in this game and downed Newton 58-30 to earn their ninth straight win on the season. The Lady Bulldogs are 14-1 overall and 9-0 in EIL play. Senior guard Rebecca Siegel scored 21 points on the game, while Maggie DuChene added 18 and Torie St Pierre 10. Berwick used man-to-man pressure to stop Newton’s early momentum and swing the game in their favor.

SOUTH BERWICK -

Be r wick’s nine game win streak came to an end on Tuesday with a 44-40 lost to Lexington Christian Academy. Ber wick led a tight game 22-20 at the half and 40-39 with less than two minutes to play, but could not hold on. The free throw line was decisive in the contest, with LCA shooting 12 for 16 and Berwick only five of seven. Senior guard Becca Siegel scored 16 points to lead the way for Berwick, whose records drops to 14-2 on the season. Berwick travels to Wolfeboro, N.H. to take on Brewster on Monday.

Berwick Academy Swimming WELLESLEY, Mass. -

Ber wick Academy Var sit y Boys and Girls swim team competed versus Eastern Independent League (EIL) teams Pingree School, Portsmouth Abbey, Landmark School, and Bancroft at Dana Hall in Wellesley, Mass. on Jan. 11. Varsity boys took first place

Marshwood High School Girls’ Basketball

The Marshwood Hawks made their way up to Portland to face Cheverus on Jan. 25 and lost by a mere seven points, 48-41. A great, collective defensive effort kept Cheverus at bay, but Marshwood didn’t have enough firepower to seal the victory. Macy Morrison lead the Hawks with 17 points, with 15 of them coming beyond the arc.

SOUTH BERWICK -

Marshwood dominated Massabesic High on Tuesday to earn a convincing victory, 57-18. An offensive outburst was led by the entire Hawks team, as 12 of the 13 players scored. Emily Robida lead the balanced attack with 10 points.

Noble-Wells Hockey ROCHESTER, N.H.

The Noble-Wells Hockey team continued their streak of shutouts, blanking South Portland 7-0. Noble-Wells blasted 38 shots on the South Portland goaltenders and six different players tickled the twine. Dean Pratt lead the way with three points, notching two goals and one assist, while Connor Pease, Noah Pease and Ryan Marsh each notched two points. Wyatt Ricker faced nine shots and turned them all away to earn a shutout win.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, I was reading your reply to one of your fans and you mentioned that you have a Kindle app on your laptop computer. I do not own a smart phone or tablet, but I do have a Kindle for reading my favorite books. Since I know nothing of apps, I figured I’d ask you, as you have helped me many times in the past. How do I get the Kindle app and how do I put it on my computer? Thanks in advance for all your advice. Margaret Dear Margaret, You can actually download the Kindle app for your computer directly from Amazon. Head on over to www.

amazon.com and find the list on the left that says, “Shop by Department”. In that list, hover your mouse over, “Kindle Books and E-readers.” Under, “Apps and Resources,” click on the link that says, “Free Kindle Reading Apps”. You will see a list of all the available devices that you can get an app for. Under “Computers” click on your operating system, either Mac, Windows 8 or Windows 7, XP and Vista. Note: even though I have a Windows 8 computer, I use the Windows 7 Kindle app because I like the way it works much better than the Windows 8 version. Click on the “Download Now” button to download and then install your Kindle Reader.

Buying a new computer? Don’t make an expensive mistake! Learn the secrets to getting the best deal on your next computer: Check it out today at

www.askTCL.com/7things.html g

There will be illustrated directions once you click the, “Download Now” button. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have an 87-year-old friend who got an error, then couldn’t send emails. She uses XP and is set up to pull her g-mail into Outlook 6. I’ve checked all her outlook settings, but she still cannot send. I found a “fix” on wiki (the Microsoft fix didn’t resolve), but I do wonder if it’s a safe site. I am wondering what your thoughts are on using a patch from wiki? http://www.wikierrors.com. Thank you for your time, Jean Dear Jean, I removed most of the link that you included in your email because when I went to look at the site it looked like a scam. Here is why. First, the only solution that the site offers directions for is to do a system restore. This is a generic solution at best, and not a solution that will work for every problem. Second, your “patch” is actually a link to software that will run a pretend scan, then demand that you buy their “license” to fix the supposed problems, and

you will still have your original problem. Third, I don’t believe that this is an actual Wiki site. In fact, when I looked up wiki-errors.com, it is owned by an individual in Pennsylvania named, “Mohammed, Osama”. Compare that to the fact that wikipedia.com and wikimedia.org are owned by the Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. in California. You can always research ownership of a website at http:// who.godaddy.com/. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am new to Windows 8 and find it very confusing. Things keep disappearing, etc. Right now I don’t have any audio anywhere except on my desktop sounds. Can you help? Thanks in advance! Lynda Hello Elizabeth, I enjoy your site very much. Your information is priceless. I use bookmarks extensively and it occurred to me, if Chrome crashes all those sites are not backed up. How can I store them on my external drive? I have Windows XP and use Google Chrome. Thank You, Sam Dear Sam, There are actually a couple of ways that you can backup your Google Chrome Bookmarks.

If you have a Google account, you can set them up to automatically sync to your Google account. The advantage to doing it this way, is that you can use Chrome on more than one computer and have access to all your bookmarks. Here is how to set this up: 1. Open Google Chrome and click on the “Customize” icon in the upper- right corner of the window. (it looks like three lines) 2. Click on “Settings” in the drop down menu. 3. A “Settings” window will appear in the main Chrome window. Click on “Settings” in the left column. 4. In the “Sign In” section, click the “Sign In” button and enter your Google account email address and password. 5. Click the button that says, “OK, sync everything”. Repeat the steps above on each computer that you want to sync your bookmarks to. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Come browse her articles, watch instructional videos, ask questions, and view comments at www.askthecomputerlady.com/questions.
