Lisa Mills By Jesse Scardina, Staff Writer KENNEBUNKPORT There are few people that know the healing power that both music and giving back provide better than Lisa Mills. Mills has been a resident of Kennebunkport for more than three decades, yet her reach — or her voice — stretches from Portland to Boston. Mills is a professional musician, currently in four ensembles: Women of Note, longstanding a Capella group; The Windmills Band, a mix of blues,
Entertainer & Healer jazz country and rock music; Deep Blue “C” Studio Orchestra, a partnered project with the Berkley School of Music; and the Ocean Ave Band, another blues-centric act. While born in Detroit and raised on the sounds of MoTown, Mills adopted Kennebunkport when she moved here in the mid1980s with her late husband, Wesley Mills. Mills was a founding member of Women of Note, the popular a Capella group that has performed for the Bush family, at
the White House and at Carnegie Hall, as well as local venues and community events across York County. Music has always been a hobby for Mills, but for the past eight years, it’s also been her career, using her music to inspire hope and promote healing to communities of people — much like she received when her husband of 34 years died of cancer in 2016. “Music is therapy,” Mills said. National Blueberry Pancake Day Raises Funds for Cure WELLS The Maine Diner in Wells has been serving blueberry pancakes since the mid-eighties. What makes them so delicious? Their customers say it’s the luscious batter, the abundance of blueberries, and the pure Maine maple syrup. Serving pancakes is an everyday occurrence at the Maine Diner, but Tuesday, January 28 is National Blueberry Pancake Day and that is when the diner will host its second annual Cure Sanfilippo Syndrome fundraiser. Blueberry or plain pancakes will be $1 per pancake or $3 for a stack. 100% of pancake proceeds will go to

year raising funds for Cure Sanfilippo Syndrome and Maine Diner wants to help. Last January 28 was Maine Diner’s first National Blueberry Pancake Day and Cure Sanfilippo Syndrome fundraiser. They raised $5,000! They are hoping to surpass that amount this year. Special t-shirts will be on sale on the day at the Remember the Maine gift shop located next door to the Maine Diner. Each t-shirt will have a stack of pancakes on the front and will read “Get Stacked at the Maine Diner.” The back will read “Peace, Love and Pancakes,
Bringing Awareness to Sanfilippo Syndrome 2020, Our Favorite Short Stack Spencer Smith”. Coach Lewia and the Wells High School wrestling team will be present at the diner on and off during the day, pending classes and practice schedules. The wrestlers will mingle, munch on pancakes, and may seek pledges for their challenge. Maine Diner’s business hours are 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Donations will be accepted, that day as well as throughout the year, and can be made over the phone with a credit card. Cure Sanfilippo Syndrome, a fatal neurodegenerative and multi-system genetic disease caused by an enzyme deficien-
cy. Currently there is no FDAapproved treatment or cure. A former Wells High School student athlete is raising a young child who is afflicted with Sanfilippo Syndrome, Spencer Smith. Scott Lewia, the Wells High School wrestling coach, has been challenging his wrestlers to a “pin and win” fundraiser for the past three years. Each wrestler seeks pledges for each pin and win they earn. People can also donate flat amounts in the name of the wrestler. Last year they raised an astounding $33,000. This is the Wells High School wrestling team’s third
