6th Annual “Shootin’ For A Cureâ€? Raises Record $35,000 WELLS – For the sixth year running, York Hospital was the clear winner of The Wells Lady Warriors’ “full court pressâ€? against breast cancer and for heart care during their “Shootin’ for a Cureâ€? (SFAC) basketball benefit. On Saturday, January 17, the Wells High School gym was an explosion of pink, red and hearts from the basketball players’ uniforms, the crowds’ shirts‌ even face paint of the full house of fans! This all day event, spearheaded by Coach Don Abbott, began with a free throw shoot out (the 8th grade winner, Mackenzie Foss, made 43 out of

50 shots) involving hundreds of 5th -12th grade girls who raised money through pledges and culminated in a high energy game against Traip Academy. Top

overall fundraiser was Olivia Durfee, who raised over $1,178, and received a set of wireless Beats by Dr. Dre headphones for her efforts. Sixty-two of sixty

nine girls raising at least $100 were entered into a drawing for a $500 shopping gift card. A bake sale and raffle highlighting all things pink, red and delicious, donated by the community and other local businesses were also held, adding to the festivities and causes’ bottom lines. In addition to this Saturday’s event, last August the Lady Warriors partnered with The Rotary Club of Wells to help plan, staff and run their 15th Annual Chuck Cumming Memorial Golf Tournament. Proceeds were split and the team was presented with a check for $10,250 which was added to the

SFAC event, ending with over $35,000 in donations to York Hospital. The money they raise will help support both the Hospital’s Heart Care for Women, along with Breast Cancer Living Well programs. The Heart Care program focuses on prevention, where female patients work with a team of dietitians, exercise physiologists, physicians and nurses to help tackle the issue of heart disease. The girls’ team, historically donating solely to the Breast Cancer fund, felt strongly about broadening the See SHOOTIN page 14...

dred Long Bridge Replacement Project. The funding comes from the FHWA Accelerated Innovation Deployment (AID) Demonstration program that provides funding as an incentive for eligible entities to accelerate the implementation and adoption of innovation in highway transportation. This grant will provide the MEDOT funding for utilizing a Construction Manager/ General Contractor (CM/GC) on the bridge replacement proj-

ect. The CM/GC option will take advantage of the input and talents of the private sector early in the design process, leading to faster and more costeffective project delivery.

YORK COUNTY – Thirteen volunteers from Habitat for Humanity York County will travel to San Marcos, Guatemala in March to help build homes for two Guatemalan families. “We will work alongside

the families to provide the ‘sweat equity’ for the project, said team leader Bill Parks, of Ogunquit. “We are blessed to live in homes with proper shelter, heat, clean water and sanitation. And if we can help provide some of these conditions for those less fortu-

nate, then we consider what we are doing more a privilege than work. Many families in Guatemala live in poorly constructed homes made of unstable materials, including corrugated metal sheets or palm thatching.

Others, lacking even basic structures, pay over half their monthly incomes on rent or crowd into small homes occupied by several families. Over the years, Habitat for Humanity York County has helped fund the construction of over 26 homes for families in Guatemala. But the March trip marks the first time the local affiliate has sent a volunteer team there to work on home constructions. The project supports Habitat for Humanity’s mission for “a world in which every person has
