Cure Sanfilippo Fundraiser includes Raffle for Sports Items WELLS Serving delicious blueberry pancakes is an everyday occurrence at the Maine Diner in Wells, but on Friday, January 28 – National Blueberry Pancake Day – the diner will host its 4th Annual Cure Sanfilippo Syndrome fundraiser. 100% of pancake proceeds will go to researching the fatal neurodegenerative and multisystem genetic disease caused by an enzyme deficiency. Currently there is no FDA-approved treatment or cure. Spencer Smith, son of Wells High School alum Nate Smith, is a young child who is afflicted with Sanfilippo Syndrome (pictured here with his dad and mom
Alli). Often called Childhood Alzheimer’s, “the disease causes children to lose all the skills they’ve gained, suffer seizures and movement disorders, experience pain and suffering, and
then die, often before the second decade of life,” wrote www.curesanfilippofoundation.org. To support Spencer and his families mission to help find a cure, on January 28 only, the
Maine Diner is once again offering blueberry or plain pancakes at $1 per pancake or $3 for a stack – and the special “Get Stacked at the Maine Diner” t-shirts at the Remember The Maine gift shop located next door. From January 29 through February 4, 100% of shipping order sales of blueberry pancake batter will be included in the fundraising (www.mainediner.com/shipping/). New this year is a raffle for a New England sports package which includes a framed and autographed photo of Mac Jones, quarterback of the New England Patriots, an autographed baseball and book by Luis Tiant, the Red Sox pitching legend, and
an autographed book by Dale Arnold, former Boston Bruins commentator! Raffle tickets are $5 each. The winner will be chosen on January 28 at the end of the day. Last January, the fundraiser collected $10,000! Donations are accepted year round and can be made over the phone with a credit card – or visit www.facebook.com/mypalspencercure sanfilippo. A bucket is kept on the counter at the diner for in-kind donations. There is a $1 donation for every blueberry soda, blueberry soda float, and Blue Paw beer sold. Maine Diner is open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily except on Wednesdays at 2265 Post Road (Route 1).
Fuel Gas Detector Installation Required as of January 1 STATEWIDE Effective on January 1 of this year, the law outlined in Title 25, §2469, requires fuel gas detectors be installed in Maine homes using propane, natural gas, or liquified petroleum gas. Fuel gas detectors are not the same as carbon monoxide detectors and will not replace the need for those within buildings in Maine. Fuel gas detectors may be powered by battery, plugged into

Senators King and Tester Tour BIW and PNSY
KITTERY U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME) recently toured Bath Iron Works (BIW) and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) with Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) to highlight the importance of the shipyards to America’s national security and Maine communities. During the tour, Senator King and Senator Tester, the Chair of the Senate’s Defense
Appropriations subcommittee, viewed some of the work being done at the facilities. Throughout the visit, Senator King stressed the importance of providing the shipyards with the stable funding and resources they need to support our national defense. “Maine’s shipyards have long been a cornerstone of our national security, building the workhorses of our Navy and

providing critical support to keep our sailors safe. Today, it was a privilege to show Chairman Tester the excellent work being done by the men and women at these shipyards, the importance of both facilities to our Naval readiness, and their significant and longstanding impact on Maine’s economy,” said Senator King. “I’m grateful that Jon made the trip today to get a firsthand look at the invaluable efforts of Maine’s skilled shipbuilders. Chairman Tester has long been a leader in supporting America’s national defense, and I look forward to our continued partnership.” “Maine’s shipyards play a critical role in supporting our brave men and women in the Navy as they protect our nation,” said Senator Tester. “The ships produced in these yards are state of the art. It was a privilege to talk with some of Maine’s hard work-

As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator King has championed funding for both BIW and PNSY. In the recent 2022 National Defense Authorization Act, Senator King secured authorization of $4.9 billion for the procurement of 3 DDG-51 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers which BIW can compete to build –among other things. Dear Computer Pro, My Windows computer is about three years old and is suddenly very slow. So slowly I can barely do anything with
it. What do I do? is this a virus or something else? Thank you, Eaton Dear Eaton, We deal with this issue
daily and it is often a combination of multiple contributing factors. The two most common culprits are unnecessary software and older hard drives. Re-

Situated on 540 acres of which 450 acres is Conservation Open Space, it is conveniently located off Route 109 in Wells, Maine, and easily accessible to the Maine Turnpike. High Pines Village makes homeownership affordable. These workforceaffordable homes will be priced between $237,500 and $250,000. Since these homes are intended to serve the workforce, income limits apply, and there is an easy application process. Although preference is given to applicants who currently live or work in Wells, or have a military preference; you are eligible if one member of your household is employed a minimum of thirty (30) hours per week and you meet the income limit. moving most software is quite easy. Simply right click on the Windows start button and then left click on “Apps and Features.” Give it a few seconds to open and sort your apps by name. Scroll through the list looking for any programs can be removed. Some examples would be games that you no longer play, old antivirus programs, etc. If you see any programs in there that you are unsure of, you can Google the name exactly as it appears in that list and do some research. Do not be shocked if there are several unwanted programs installed. For each one that you want to remove, click on them, and then click the “Uninstall” button. Some programs may force you to reboot. You can start the process over when the computer boots back up. Once you have removed all unwanted software, this is a good time to download, install, and run one of my favorite computer cleaning programs, Malwarebytes (https://amzn. to/3txNEET). For home users, you can download a free version directly from their website. After 14 days, it will prompt to purchase a full license, which I highly recommend, but you are allowed to continue using it as an unlicensed version. The primary difference between the free and paid versions is the lack of active scanning in the free version. Once installed, let Malwarebytes scan your machine and clean up anything it may find. I have yet to see Malwarebytes miss anything nor have I ever seen it identify something legitimate as danger-
ous. After letting Malwarebytes rid the machine of any malware it finds, you can either uninstall it or run it periodically for peace of mind! Another issue that I see occasionally is multiple antivirus and/or system security programs installed on the same machine. While some may think multiple defenses is better, that is not the case in this instance and this combination will slow your computer down as these programs compete for access to files. Choose a good security program like Webroot (https://amzn.to/3GBhDiS) and let it do its thing. Lastly, if your computer still has an older hard disk drive or HDD, you will see a significant performance boost by having that upgraded to a solid-state drive or SSD. This is something you may want to leave to a computer professional, though, as it often involves partial disassembly of the PC and a little know how to ensure your data stays intact! Best wishes, Matt Dear Computer Pro, We recently purchased new computer with Windows 11, We have an eBay business and of course personal photos that we would like to transfer from a cell phone, we would like to know what you recommend. on your phone and then click “Import pictures and videos.” Windows will scan your phone looking for all photos and videos and, upon completion, present you with a window that will walk you through the import process. Just follow the onscreen instructions. Keep in mind that newer phones can take high-resolution pictures so the transfer process can take a while to complete. Once all your photos have imported, although there are several third-party applications that you could install to help manage your pictures, the Windows Photos app is quite powerful today. The biggest thing I like about the Windows native application is that it does facial recognition. I can now open Photos, click on People across the menu bar at the top left, and it will show me all the faces it has found in my photos. I can then click on a face and quickly find all the photos
containing that specific person. It’s not perfect, but it beats the old way of sifting through hundreds or thousands of photos looking for the few pictures I have of my grandmother, for example! If you need more advanced features, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom (https:// amzn.to/3IgvsUq) or Adobe Photoshop Elements (https://
amzn.to/3nyo9zq) are both great program with a reasonable learning curve and many tools. Of course, Adobe Photoshop (https://amzn.to/3GCVukh) is the gold standard in professional photography, but it will take some time and dedication to get up to speed. There are also many other free options like GIMP, InfranView, and
WS
XnView that offer a variety of features that will satisfy most users. Thanks for writing in! Good luck, Matt Interested in learning more? Matt Gallant is owner of Oasis IT in South Berwick. Please email him questions at questions@askthecomputerpro. com or visit www.askthecomputerpro.com.

Stellar Turnout at Meeting of Astronomical Society KENNEBUNK The Astronomical Society of Northern New England (ASNNE) held its monthly meeting on January 7. The high point of the meeting was a presentation by Kerry-Ann Lecky Hepburn. By age 15, Hepburn was taking pictures of the stars and solar system objects. As a space science undergraduate student at York University in Toronto, she volunteered at the observatory where she aided in tours, observing sessions, and research. In the next 20+ years, she made big strides, improving her skills in deep-sky astrophotography.
Hepburn’s work has won awards, and has been featured in science textbooks, astronomy-related calendars, magazines, and online publications such as Sky & Telescope, Sky News, and NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day. Hepburn showed slides of her astrophotography at the meeting, as well as technical information relating to how the
photograph was taken such. Interested readers can see her work at www.weatherandsky.com. The January meeting also included Bernie Reim’s “What’s Up for the Month” and the ever-popular “Astro Shorts” where attendees and members share questions, activities, news, and observations. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ “Robert Frost: Fire & Ice” Returns to Clay Hill Farm CAPE NEDDICK The life of Pulitzer-prize winning poet, Robert Frost, told in a poignant one-man play written by June August, returns to Clay Hill Farm for six matinée performances beginning Saturday, February 5. Local actor, Kirk Simpson, reprises the poignant role of America’s favorite poet in this moving adaptation. Following sold-out performances as Edgar Allen Poe and Charles Dickens in October and December of 2021, Simpson once again brings to life this literary legend. Flowing from narrative to poetry, this remarkable dramatic reading of August’s Robert Frost: Fire & Ice, provides insight into the life of the famed writer and Pulitzer-prize winner. Simpson’s unique brand of storytelling provides an intimate dining experience for Frost fans, theater fans and anyone interested in the trials and triumphs of this
famous New Englander. “Robert Frost: Fire and Ice” opens on February 5 and runs for six matinée performance dates: Saturdays of February 5, 19, 26, and Sundays of February 6, 20, 27. Performances start at 1 p.m. but doors open at 12:30 p.m. Playwright, composer, and lyricist, June August authored “Robert Frost: Fire and Ice” for Arthur Peterson of TV’s Soap, Mission Impossible and the Walton’s Fame in 1981. Introducing WorkShare
STATEWIDE WorkShare offers an alternative to layoffs, helping businesses retain trained staff during a temporary slowdown in work. Under this program, employers can voluntarily reduce the hours of staff in lieu of layoffs, and allow employees to supplement their income with partial unemployment benefits. When business upturns, employees resume regular hours and employers can ramp things up quickly with the experienced team in place. In addition to helping employees avoid the hardships of full unemployment, the employer can: avoid the expense of recruiting, hiring, and training new employees; reduce staff hours by 10-50 percent; and ensure that skilled workers will be available to resume work when more business returns. In order to utilize WorkShare, the following requirements must apply: be in lieu
of layoffs and not related to seasonal or intermittent employment; layoffs must impact at least 10 percent of the affected unit; employees of the same affected unit must be reduced equally throughout the week between 10-50 percent of their regularly scheduled (40-hour) week; reduction percent needs to be consistent week to week and across the unit; maintain health and retirement benefits for employees par-
ticipating in WorkShare; be current on tax payments and wage reports; and obtain approval from collective bargaining agent, if applicable. For more information, call 207-623-6783 or visit www.maine. gov/unemployment/workshare/. Leave your name, business name, and phone number, and a WorkShare staff member willreturn your call within 1-3 days for an initial discussion of your needs.
each month, The Bottom Line podcast features a wide variety of guests and presents interviews relevant to public policy priorities both in state and nationally, to economic recovery efforts of the pandemic, and to other significant issues of interest to Maine’s business community. Last week’s episode, on January 13, featured State Economist Amanda Rector for a discussion about and reflections on 2021’s economic standing and how the pandemic recovery is shaping predictions for 2022. YORK COUNTY MaineHealth is reminding community members who test positive for COVID-19 with at-home tests that they should isolate at home and notify their primary care provider. MaineHealth emergency departments, urgent care and walk-in clinics do not perform confirmatory COVID-19 tests. “At-home antigen tests are reliable if they’re positive and you have symptoms,” said Dora Anne Mills, M.D., MaineHealth
Chief Health Improvement Officer. “There is no need to have a confirmatory PCR test before you begin following CDC guidelines for isolation.” Emergency Departments, Walk-in clinics and urgent care centers should be used for medically appropriate needs. The only time anyone who has tested positive should leave isolation is to seek necessary or emergency medical care. Community members who have tested positive at home should contact
their primary care providers to determine if follow-up care is necessary. Anyone showing any of these signs should seek emergency medical care immediately: Trouble breathing, Persistent pain or pressure in the chest, New confusion, Inability to wake or stay awake, Bluish lips or face. Community members who need a COVID-19 test should visit www.maine.gov/ covid19/testing to see a list of COVID-19 testing centers.

Health & Fitness Beating Winter Blues NATIONWIDE The third Monday in January is dubbed “Blue Monday” – also known as the saddest day of the year. Feeling down on this day could be a sign of the winter blues. But for others, “Blue Monday” lasts all season. If short and gloomy days are draining your energy levels and affecting your mental health, then you may suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). This form of depression is triggered by changes in weather and daylight that occur in winter. The good news is, there are many effective treatments and preventive measures for SAD. Consider Light Therapy. SAD is triggered by changes in our exposure to sunlight. Sitting in front of a special type of light box for about 30-45 minutes every morning can reduce your symptoms of SAD. Make sure you talk to your doctor about whether this treatment option is the right one for you. Maintain A Balanced Diet. People affected by SAD tend to crave more sugary foods which allows your body to feel greater fatigue. Try balancing your diet by including more fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats. When you eat better, you feel better! Make A Plan. Are you oversleeping or spending more time in bed? Develop a “fun menu” of activities, daily exercise, and outings that can help you when you’re looking for an uplifting diversion. Check Your Vitamin D Levels. Lack of sunshine means lower levels of Vitamin D – which is a nutrient your body needs! Try spending time outdoors when the sun is at its highest, your doctor might also recommend Vitamin D supplements if your body

The website is www.covidtests.gov/. There is a limit of four tests per residence, no matter how many live in each household. The expected delivery window is 7-12 days. Additionally, as of January

The process for this varies dependent upon insurer, so check with individual insurance companies. ...CURRIER from page 13 during his life. He had an infectious personality, great smile, and was known for his generosity and support of others near and dear to his heart. There wasn’t anything Bry would not do for those he cared about. He loved hunting and playing golf with his brother, brothers-in-law, nephew, and many other lifelong friends. Family and friends were very important to him and played a big part in his life. Bry will truly be missed by all. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association or to a veteran’s organization of your choice. To leave online condolences, visit www.jspelkeyfuneralhome.com. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved fishing with his family in the spring near Millinocket, and staying at Pete’s camp on Debsconeag lake. He would often say while trolling up there, “Be ready, this is a good spot.” He is also known for winning first place in the Piscataqua River fishing contest for the largest Coho salmon. He will be loved and missed by all who knew him – but not the fish. Wally is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Jane Hichens; four children, Teresa, Carin, Calvin, and Walter; and eight grandchildren, Olivia, Isabel, Calvin Jr., Benjamin, Katelyn, Nicole, Ashlynne, and Brynnely. Larry D. Morrison, 69 WELLS – Larry D. Morrison passed away Sunday, January 2, 2022 at his home following a period of failing health and battling Pulmonary Fibrosis. Larry was born on December 28, 1952 in Massachusetts, the son of Robert and Charlotte Sullivan Morrison, and is a graduate of a trade school in Massachusetts. He was a longtime employee in automobile sales, retiring due to his failing health as a sales manager for a dealership in Massachusetts. Following many years of vacationing in Wells, he moved here permanently to enjoy the beaches, which he enjoyed walking any time he could with his grandchildren, whom he adored. He was known for his gregarious personality and stories that he told, always leaving the listener with a laugh to remember him by. An avid animal lover, he adopted many dogs over the years. Most summers, you could catch him scootering around town. Larry is predeceased by his parents, brother Daniel Morrison, and sisters, Denise and Delores Morrison. Survivors include his former wife and caregiver Sharon Morrison; son Brock Morrison and his wife Jessie of Nevada; two daughters, Kim Conlin and her husband Patrick of Massachusetts,
and Tricia Finkelstein and her husband Michael of North Carolina; two brothers, Dwight, and Burton and his wife Larissa, all of Massachusetts; three sisters, Bonnie Lusignan and her husband Russell and Cheryl McKissick, both of Massachusetts, and Peggy Finan of Florida; step-children, Paul Gaudette, Danielle Hill, and Nicole Wood of Massachusetts; sister-in-law Denise Ethier-Cole; brother-inlaw Richard Ethier of Massachusetts; multiple grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a wide circle of extended family. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 350, Westbrook, ME 040923438 or to Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 East Ohio St., Suite 500, Chicago, IL 60611. To share a memory or leave a message of condolence, please visit Larry’s Book of Memories Page at www.bibberfuneral.com. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells.
Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists.

Animal Welfare Society KENNEBUNK Whether taking an Animal Welfare Society (AWS) resident pup for an overnight slumber party, overseeing a rabbit’s recovery from surgery for a week or two, or caring for a litter of kittens for a summer, foster families make a huge difference for the pets in our community, including the pets waiting for new “forever” homes at AWS. Pets need foster care for a variety of reasons – some for a day or two, some for an extended period of time. Each pet’s needs are unique, so there isn’t a onesize-fits-all type of foster family.
Families, couples, individuals, roommates – no matter your family set up or your home environment – there will be a pet (or two or three!) that can use your love and companionship. Questions? Visit www.animalwelfaresociety.org or call Marlaina Grueskin at 207-9853244 x 122.
