19th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration KENNEBUNK The 19th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration will be offered via Zoom on Monday, January 17 at 10 a.m. by the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church of Kennebunk. The program features keynote speaker Dr. Chris Hunt (pictured) and musician Corey L. Brown. Dr. Hunt, Ed.D. recently served as an associate provost at the University of New England, but this year returned to his home state, Pennsylvania, where he is vice president and dean for equity and inclusion at Moravian University. In his talk, “Dr.
King’s Legacy and the Evolution of Activism,” Hunt draws from his research and experience as an administrator of several colleges and universities.
Speaking with Philip Shelley of the UNE Magazine, Dr. Hunt said, “…in the wake of [George Floyd’s] death and countless others, we must honor them by doing the hard, introspective work of making more just and equitable college campuses and society... It feels like society — more so now than perhaps at other times in the past — is willing to be introspective and ask ourselves, collectively, some harder questions.” In his dissertation, “When Millennials Meet Baby Boomers: Multiple Case Study on the Lived Experiences of Black Male College Students”,
Archaeological Dig in York! YORK Many visitors and residents of York have noticed the white tent located near 142 York Street. It shields the workers and the colonial-era artifacts being found, examined and documented on one of the last open pieces of land in York Village. The on-going excavation is part of a statemandated process that needs to take place before development starts on the more than 100 acres owned by the Davis family. State law requires some development projects to be reviewed before

a permit is issued. Part of this process includes a review by the Historic Preservation Commission which determines whether an archaeological study may be necessary. So, starting last October, a team from Northeast Archaeology Research Center began digging at the site looking for traces of historical value. It is the first of two excavations with the second dig scheduled to start in the spring.
All the artifacts recovered from the Davis land will go back to the Northeast Archaeology laboratory to be cleaned, catalogued, analyzed and curated as needed. So far, the team has found a number of interesting artifacts, including many old tobacco pipe stems, ceramics and traces of trenches used by soldiers in the late 17th century. Once the items are curated, some will go to the Maine State Museum. The property is significant
Dr. Hunt examined the intergenerational college journeys of 21 Black male college graduates from 1965 to 2018 including their challenges, triumphs, and strategies to achieve excellence. Dr. Hunt’s consulting work includes special engagements, climate studies, and ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion training and development. Rev. Lara Campbell, minister of First Parish, will welcome all to the celebration and lead a question and answer segment at the end of the talk. as it was once owned by 17th century settler Abraham Preble, an early homesteader in York. Preble built the original residence on the property in 1642, which would later serve as a small fortified dwelling in times of conflict. The Davis property was in the Preble family until 1847 before it was sold to a farmer, Richard H. Walker, who owned the property until it was sold to the McIntire family in 1911. The Mary McIntire Davis Trust, a family trust, currently owns the property and received final approval in July 2019 from
the planning board to develop 115 residential units on the property, including six workforce housing units and more than 40 units for people 55 and older, according to the plan.
Reading the Ice – Is That Ice Safe? STATEWIDE Before you head out to ice skate, ice fish or recreate on frozen ponds, lakes or rivers make sure you know that the ice is safe. Matt LaRoche, retired Superintendent of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, shares important information and tips: Ice fishing and snowmobiling on frozen waters can be a very enjoyable experience. However, you should be aware that when traveling on frozen lakes you could be just one poor decision or miscalculation away from plunging into icy waters. Before you venture out onto the ice, especially early in the winter,

you should check the thickness of the ice. It doesn’t take very long to chop a hole in the ice with an axe or chisel. I usually chop until I can see at least six inches of good dark ice. Six inches of ice is enough to support 4,000 pounds according to the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory. I figure that is plenty to support me and my snowmobile. Don’t assume that if there is a track on the lake that the ice is safe! and spring holes. Basically, anywhere there is moving water should be avoided because moving water will not freeze as easily as standing water. I also recommend that you bring some basic safety equipment on your winter excursions on frozen lakes. My emergency equipment includes a throw bag for pulling someone else out of the water and the “picks of life” for pulling myself out of the water. These are nothing more than ice picks with a retractable cover over the sharp end. A couple of good-sized spikes will serve the same propose. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Playhouse Welcomes New Development Director OGUNQUIT The Ogunquit Playhouse is pleased to welcome Janet Clarkson Davis (pictured) in the role of Development Director. Throughout her 27 years in the nonprofit sector, Davis has provided capital and annual campaign consulting, strategic planning, and governance services to a multitude of arts and cultural clients, most recently as founding principal of the consulting firm Clarkson Davis. “I am inspired and energized by the invitation to lead the expansion of philanthropic support of the Playhouse,” said Janet Clarkson Davis. “For 90 years, audiences spanning multiple generations have experienced remarkable theatrical productions, making memories of a lifetime. The leadership team responsible for planning the next 90 years has a significant responsibility to honor these memories and traditions, and to ensure that the Playhouse is ready for the generations to come. Leading the capital and annual fundraising efforts on their behalf is an honor for me and our entire development department.” “We are thrilled that Janet is joining the Playhouse family during this period of immense change and growth,” said Managing Director Kent Bridges. “We could not be in better hands as we embark on a major comprehensive campaign that will restore and renovate our beloved Playhouse and provide investment in our future as a premiere regional theatre. With her extensive experience not only in nonprofit development, but capital campaigns specifically, Janet brings invaluable fundraising leadership to our institution at this important moment in our long history.” Janet Clarkson Davis’ 27
years in the nonprofit sector have informed her beliefs that creativity is a basic human need, and authentic gratitude is the heartbeat of successful fundraising efforts. As founding principal of the consulting firm Clarkson Davis, she worked for the past 16 years providing capital and annual campaign consulting, strategic planning, and governance services to arts and cultural clients including the North Carolina Stage Company, Kitchen Dog Theater, Second Thought Theatre, Dallas Film Society, Big Thought, Lone Star Circus Arts, and Encore Park. Janet held in-house positions leading the fundraising efforts at artistic organizations including the Dallas Theater Center, Dallas Symphony Association, and the Nasher Sculpture Center. Her career also includes service as a fundraising executive with United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, United Way of America, The Presbyterial Healthcare Foundation at Texas Health Resources, and as an adjunct professor for the Master of International Arts Management program at Southern Methodist University. She served as Vice President of the Board of the Association of Fundraising Professionals in North Texas and as a member of the Past Presidents’ Advisory Committee for the
Dallas Chapter of the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning. She earned recognition as a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) in 2006, and was selected to teach exam preparation classes for CFRE applicants. She is immediate past President of the Board of the Rye Historical Society, and is a member of the Seacoast Women’s Giving Circle. Her passion for theatre began at a very young age in her hometown of Washington, DC and led her to the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Musical Theatre. ~ Obituaries ~
Charles (Charlie) Scott Robinson, 60 ELIOT – Charles Scott Robinson was born on May 4, 1961 and passed away on December 24, 2021 at the age of 60. When one loses a man who touched the lives of so many, your grief is shared. That is what is happening around the world right now. Not just me, but the world lost a great, great man. At the young age of only 60 years, this loss was beyond unexpected. This mentor, father
to so many that he didn’t father, teacher, friend, instructor, and love of my life, my heart, my soulmate was taken way too soon. I could easily say he was survived by me, Hillary Guptill, his significant other for the last seven years, but that would be so selfish. Charlie was survived by a generation of young people who looked up to him in Dover, NH, and surrounding areas, who gave them a safe place to just be themselves and completely accepted. He is survived by friends who are going to think back fondly on his years of doing Living History reenactments with them, getting them kitted up, guiding them on the ins and outs. Charlie is survived by many whom he taught the love, respect, and appreciation of firearms, defense, and making sure to “cover your six.” Charlie is survived by men and women whom he was friends with throughout Dover, Eliot, Kittery, Portsmouth… I know because we couldn’t go anywhere
without someone coming over to say hello and how have you been. Charlie was always ready with a kind word, always enquired about their family/work/life in general. Charlie will be survived by previous coworkers and fellows-in-arms from his time as an MP in Germany, as well as fellow officers when he worked in law enforcement stateside. When I think of Charlie certain words come to mind… loyal, ethical, strong, stubborn (he was a Taurus), loving, protective, and private. Some of you know more about his past than I do. He liked to keep his past in his past. We had focused on the present and our future. I have shared a bit about the passions of a Charlie that all of you knew and loved. Now let me share the loves and passions of the man I knew and love. Charlie loved his privacy, his “little cottage in the hood” that he referred to as his sanctuary. He loved to sit outside on summer/autumn evenings
after work with his feet up and watch the sun fall through the branches of the trees, shining on the green grass of the neighbors big backyard, sipping on a craft beer with hops that he picked from his own vines. Charlie loved nature. Plants were a passion of his… inside or out… didn’t matter. He liked to leave his backyard all wild so the flowers looked like a “wild, witchy” garden. He loved to watch the humming birds collect nectar from the wild foxgloves. He knew the calls of all the birds… enjoyed the friendliness of the Cat Birds, thought Blue Jays were “- - -holes”… enjoyed his beautiful Cardinals. He loved turtles and would turn around to rescue any in the road. He was so… proper most of the time. He told me he got that from his mom, whom he loved dearly. He said she saved him by giving him culture while growing up in the backwoods of East Woodstock. He loved his mother so much and
talked about her often. While growing up in East Woodstock, he developed his love for dogs by helping with the Malamutes his parents raised and the stories he would share about his favorite malamute, Chilly. His love for animals was one of the things I loved most about Charlie. Our evening walks to his “treasure trove”, going for little drives in his “little jeeper” (how proud he was of that little jeep) and showing me where friends gone by had lived and telling me little stories of this one or that, sitting at night watching stupid movies over and over, his multitude of accents and teasing me with the “up Maine” one. He went from all gruff from work to talking baby talk to our cats. He loved our cats… usually greeted them before me when he got home. He wasn’t good at public shows of affection or even intimacy in general, but he loved me and always See ROBINSON page 16...

Mills Deploys Additional National Guard to Support Hospitals in Responding to COVID-19 Surge AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills announced that she will activate up to an additional 169 members of the Maine National Guard to help alleviate short-term capacity constraints at hospitals and maintain access to inpatient health care for Maine people amid record-high COVID-19 hospitalizations. The Governor today directed the activation of these additional Guard members to serve in non-clinical support roles at health care facilities
across the state. The Guard members will help hospitals maintain capacity by freeing up clinical staff to focus on patient care. Their assistance will also open additional beds at nursing facilities, in swing bed units, and at other “decompression sites” that accept patients discharged from hospitals. This, in turn, will allow hospitals to safely discharge more individuals, relieving a bottleneck that will then allow hospitals to provide inpatient care for more people with COVID-19 and ensure delivery of health care for

other serious health problems. The National Guard members will deploy next week and remain in service through the end of February. The Mills Administration will release the deployment locations, which are being finalized and are subject to change, later this week. “I wish we did not have to take this step, but the rise in hospitalizations – caused primarily by those who are not vaccinated – is stretching the capacity of our health care system thin, jeopardizing care for Maine people, and putting increased strain on our already exhausted health care workers,” said Governor Janet Mills. “The National Guard have been an invaluable asset during this public health emergency, and with this new order,
we are hopeful that our hospitals will be able to open more beds to provide for surge care. Of course, the most fundamental way to help our hospitals maintain capacity and give our health care workers a much-needed break is to follow their advice and get vaccinated. It may save your life or someone else’s.” Governor Mills also announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved her request for Federal COVID19 Surge Response Teams for MaineHealth in Portland and Central Maine Medical Center (CMMC) in Lewiston. These two teams, consisting of a total of seven federally-contracted nurses and pharmacists, began arriving yesterday and are sched-

STATEWIDE On Monday, January 3, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration amended the emergency use authorization
(EUA) for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to: Expand the use of a single booster dose to include use in individuals 12-15 years of age; Shorten the
time between the completion of primary vaccination of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and a booster dose to at least five months; Allow for a third primary series dose for certain immunocompromised children 5-11 years of age. CDC is updating thei recommendation for when many people can receive a booster shot, shortening the interval from six months to five months for people who received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. This means that people can now receive an mRNA booster shot five months after completing their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series. The booster interval recommendation for people who received the J&J vaccine (two months) or the Moderna vaccine (six months), has not changed. Additionally, CDC is recommending that moderately or severely immunocompromised 5–11-year-olds receive an additional primary dose of vaccine 28 days after their second shot. At this time, only the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID19 vaccine is authorized and recommended for children aged 5-11.

Purchase of 250,000 BinaxNOW Rapid Antigen Tests Announced AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills announced that the Maine Department of Health and Human Services has purchased an additional 250,000 COVID-19 rapid antigen tests from Maine-based manufacturer Abbott Labs and will distribute them to Walgreens pharmacies, health care sites, schools, and congregate care settings across Maine in January and February. This purchase of rapid antigen tests is one of the largest ever by the State and represents nearly a quarter of all the rapid tests the State has made available since the beginning of the pandemic. The Department of Health and Human Services ordered the additional BinaxNOW rapid antigen tests to increase the availability of free tests for all Maine residents administered at Walgreens pharmacy locations across the state. NFL Joins Blood Donation Effort STATEWIDE The American Red Cross and the NFL are partnering this January to urge individuals to give blood or platelets and help tackle the national blood shortage. Those who give in January will be entered for a chance to win a getaway to Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles, CA. As an extra thankyou from the Red Cross, those who give will also be entered to win a home theater package and a $500 e-gift card. ditionally, these rapid tests will support the testing of Maine’s health care workforce, school staff, and students through the pooled testing program, as well as staff and residents of congregate settings, such as homeless shelters, long-term care facilities, and correctional facilities. “These rapid tests will help increase the availability of testing across Maine as well as in hospitals, schools, and similar settings,” said Health and Human Services Commissioner Jeanne Lambrew and Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) Director Nirav D. Shah. “While this is a step in the right direction, we will continue to work to make testing more easily and readily available across Maine to detect the virus early and prevent the spread of COVID-19.”

FINANCE & CAREER $3.5M in Loans to Cover Property Tax Bills
AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills announced that her Administration is launching the State Property Tax Deferral Program, a lifeline loan program through the Governor’s Maine Jobs & Recovery Plan that can cover the annual property tax bills of eligible Maine people who are ages 65 and older or are permanently disabled and who cannot afford to pay them on their own. The loan program will allow Maine’s most vulnerable community members to age in place and ensure that property taxes are still delivered to municipalities. The program requires repayment of the loan once the property is sold or becomes part of an estate. The State Property Tax Deferral Program is modeled on a similar expired program from the 1990s, this time funded by $3.5 million from Federal American Rescue Plan through the Governor’s Maine Jobs & Recovery Plan. It complements an additional Maine Jobs & Recovery Plan investment of $60 million to build more housing for Maine people. Together, these Maine Jobs &
Recovery Plan initiatives can help address Maine’s surging real estate market, which is making housing more difficult to afford and has threatened to displace renters, working class families, older Mainers, and those who are permanently disabled from stable housing opportunities. “Older Mainers and those with disabilities deserve to live and age in the comfort of their homes without worrying they’ll lose them because they can’t afford the property taxes,” said Governor Janet Mills. “This program through my Maine Jobs & Recovery Plan provides folks with the peace of mind that they can age safely and securely in their homes. My Administration will continue to work with the Legislature to address property taxes, increase the availability of housing, and ensure that all Maine people, regardless of age or income, are able to have a safe, stable place to call home in our state.” The Governor has also increased housing opportunities for older Mainers, signing in 2019 a $15 million voter-approved senior housing bond held up by her predecessor. The Governor also
signed into law the single largest state investment in housing in Maine’s history and recently broke ground on a new, major housing project resulting from that law. The State Property Tax Deferral Program builds on this work by paying property tax bills to Maine municipalities for any
owner-occupied, primary residence so long as the owner is aged 65 or older and/or permanently disabled, earns less than $40,000 per year, and has liquid assets below $50,000 (or below $75,000 if applying jointly). Full eligibility criteria and applications may be obtained via Maine Revenue Services.
Minimum Wage Increase in Maine STATEWIDE Effective January 1, the State of Maine’s minimum wage increased to $12.75 per hour. Tipped employees must be paid a minimum of $6.38 per hour in a
direct wage, and must receive sufficient tips in order to earn at least an average of $12.75 per hour. Maine law specifies that overtime-exempt employees be paid an annual salary that ex-
ceeds 3,000 times the State’s minimum hourly wage. With the minimum wage increase to $12.75 per hour, this equates to $735.59 per week or $38,251 per year.

...ROBINSON from page 10 told me and showed me in ways that mattered most to us. And I will never forget our Monday McDonald’s Dates… yes even Charlie would be naughty once in a while and eat chicken nuggets, fries, and share a root beer. He was a man who would offer to brush my hair, share foot rubs at night, make sure I brushed my teeth before bed, kiss my forehead and pat me on the bottom. He was tender, loved nature and the quiet beauty of a sunset… and very protective of me. His idea of showing love was ammo, a gun cleaning kit, and a holster for Valentine’s Day… it would keep me safe, he would say. People saw a silly man, a strong man, a brilliant man, a knowledgeable man, a reliable man, a controlled man. I saw the man who loved me to hold him, to cuddle and run my fingers through his hair, to garden for hours or simply sit and watch the leaves blow, the sun descend, and just rest. He had his happy spots that he would take me and no one else… and to do so was
his way of showing his love, his trust. He told me often that he loved that I just let him shake off the façade he had to wear for the outside world and just let him be himself. I saw the tender man that he truly was while with me. Not many in his life saw that. And the bar he set for me of what a man should be… I promise you… not many can even compete. Gallant, loyal, protective, charming, and true was my Charlie. Until we meet again, my once-in-a-lifetime love, my heart, MY person, I’ll remember to secure my perimeter, make sure to “confirm kills” for mosquitoes, and mention your name… I’ll get a good seat. From Hillary, your Shieldmaiden Warrior Goddess Fairy Witch. Friends and loved ones are invited to attend a Celebration of Charlie’s Life on Sunday, January 23, 3-6 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick. If possible for attendees to please bring a prepared written story of their relationship with Charlie… an anecdote, something they remember him for, how he impacted their
lives. Burial in the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery will be in the spring. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home in North Berwick where condolences may be expressed at www.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com. • • • • • • • • • •

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists.
(Leighton) Sevigney, and a 1971 graduate of Wells High School where he was in the chess club and played hours of cribbage. Billy worked at General Dynamics in Saco as a gunner #1 specialist test-firing guns, and was just shy of 50 years! Billy was a huge presence in so many lives. He had many friends in different circles. In 1982, he married the love of his life, Kelley Coleman. They were two peas in a pod, and best friends with a love like no other. They completed each other and where there was one, there was always the other. The most important thing to him was having fun and living life to the fullest. They had their only child, Jenna, in 1984. Billy adored Jenna and they had a special bond with many common interests like old John Wayne movies, the Three Stooges, and hours of listening to music. He loved attending concerts, camping, skiing, going to dirt bike races, weekend excursions, and plenty of vacations. He loved his Harley and riding on weekends, bike week in Daytona, Sturgis, Key West, and dozens more. When not traveling, Billy enjoyed spending as much time with friends and family as the hours would allow. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, Bruins, and all-around sports fan. Whether it be lighting up the room at Mike’s and Stutsey’s, playing golf, or kicking back while smoking a cigar and sipping on Jack in the garage, he simply loved life itself and thought of it as an adventure every day. He had an enormous sense of humor, heart of gold, and an infectious booming laugh. He had no idea of the impact he made on so many lives. When Kelley asked, “So what’s on your bucket list?”, Billy replied, “I’ve been living my bucket list for 40 years with you honey.” A life gone too soon and a man who will never be for-

gotten. Billy was predeceased by his parents; in-laws, Lewis and Isabelle Coleman; brothers, Ricky and David Sevigney; and sister-in-law Nancy Coleman. He will forever be loved by his wife of 40 years, Kelley (Coleman) Sevigney and their daughter Jenna of Wells; nephew David (Nicki) Sevigney and Lexus (Ellery) Gordon; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Allayne (Ron) Maillet, Kerri (Ed) Van Schaack, Michael (Ruth) Coleman, Joel Coleman, Tony (Debbie) Coleman, Chris (Donna) Coleman, and Patrick (Kim) Coleman; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews; and so many amazing friends. A party in honor of Billy’s life will be held on Saturday, January 15, 1-4 p.m. at Mike’s Clam Shack in Wells with a toast of Jack in his honor. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island #300, Topsham, ME 04086. ~ Ask The Computer Pro ~ Computer Pro, I see a lot of people have pictures of their grandkids on their computer screen. I have lots of pictures of my grandkids, but I must open my files and go to pictures to see them. How can I put one on my screen all the time? Thank you, Mabel Dear Mabel, I think what you are referring to is the desktop background or wallpaper. This is the image that stays on your screen behind all the icons and any open programs. Since you already know how to open File Explorer and browse to your Pictures folder, you are 99% of the way there! Once you have found the photo that you want to make your desktop background, simply right click on the photo, and choose “Set as desktop background” from the menu that appears and VOILA! Glad to help! Matt Dear Computer Pro, I just bought a new laptop, and it came with a trial of McAfee? The trial is nearing the end and I don’t know if I should pay to renew it or is there something better? Thank you, Jane Dear Jane, If you ask five IT professionals this question, you will likely get five different answers and give twice as many reasons why they like one or dislike the other. So, my response is merely my opinion, that is based on thirty years in the industry. I don’t care for McAfee. I have experience with all the big names and my choice for the past several years has been Webroot (https://amzn.to/3r2Rpiz). I have it deployed on hundreds of customer machines and have never had an issue with it keeping the machines safe. The biggest reason I prefer Webroot over the others is the fact that it takes up minimal resources on your computer. Some of the other desktop security programs take up so much of your resources that your computer gets slower. If your computer was already beginning to feel like it was slow, this could be the difference between a computer that you can use or one
that you cannot. I also like that Webroot is considered a ‘cloud antivirus solution’ which means that virus definitions are instantaneous rather than downloaded on a regular basis. If a new threat is found, you don’t have to worry about not getting an update for an hour or a day, it happens automatically in near real-time. Lastly and, to some extent, more importantly, Webroot was founded in Boulder, Colorado in 1997 and is currently headquartered in nearby
Broomfield, CO. When talking about desktop security software that has access to everything on your system and potentially on your network, I am not a fan of using software from foreign countries. Here is a list of some of the biggest security companies out there and where they are located so you can decide for yourself: AVG (Czech Republic), Avast (Czech Republic), Bitdefender (Romania), ESET (Slovakia), Kaspersky (Russia), Malwarebytes (USA), McAfee

WELLS We were delighted on Monday, when the neurologist overseeing Pumpkin’s care gave the thumbs up on him being released from quarantine and allowed to play with the other kitties at our Farmhouse Center. Pumpkin is half the size of the other kitties, but wasn’t the least bit shy. Instead, he swaggered over to them, touched noses and hissed. Pumpkin is confident and so ready to be a part of a “pride” of kitties! His recheck went great. To make it even more encouraging, Pumpkin gained a full pound since his last visit. Pumpkin had a very tough start in life, having to endure quarantine and diagnostics, including an MRI and other costly and serious tests that were needed to diagnose him. We’ve been holding our breath about him and writing the big checks that specialists and emergency
hospitals command, Happily, so many of you chipped in to help, it took the sting out of the bills and helped us afford it. What would we do without you? One of the surprising conditions Pumpkin was diagnosed with is Lyme disease! He’s the first Safe Haven kitty in all these years to get it. Even more startling, just a week ago another feverish, lethargic kitty came into our care and also had Lyme disease! Why now? We have no idea, but we know now that whenever a kitty becomes lethargic and has a high fever, we get him tested for Lyme. Lyme is not contagious. It’s contracted via a tick bite. That’s another reason to keep kitties indoors. Or at the very least, give your cat a tick preventative. As Pumpkin progresses and we evaluate his needs, we’ll keep you updated and announce when he’s ready for adoption!

Nicholas, the kitty with two broken legs, is simply amazing. He is so happy, healthy, and impossible to keep subdued. But his surgeon told us he must stay in his small play tent, and can’t begin free roaming for several more weeks. He’s so enormously wonderful. We feel blessed that we were able to save his life. Again, so many of you reached out to contribute to his care, you helped us pay his bills. We are so grateful! Need a happy respite from the winter winds and winter blues? Our thrift/treasure/antique shop at 1784 Post Road in Wells, is a sunny oasis. You can spend hours in our antique apple barn, exploring two huge floors of treasures, trinkets, furnishings, décor, clothing, toys,

Another terrific book from the same folks is The Internet for Dummies (https:// amzn.to/3nwI6GX). Though it is a few years old, it is still highly informative and touches on everything from setting up a cablemodem to social media.
