BCTV Presents Documentary on Former Downtown Wasteland
Annual Atlantic Plunge This Weekend KENNEBUNK The 20th annual Atlantic Plunge will take place at Gooch’s Beach, Kennebunk at 11 a.m. to raise money for Caring Unlimited’s programs. In-person par-
BERWICK In 2008, Prime Tanning, the town’s largest employer, closed after 70 years and left 11 acres of tired industrial buildings abandoned in the center of town; the land beneath was filled with hazardous wastes. Town officials and a group of volunteers, Envision Berwick, worked to get the site cleaned up and to find a way to revitalize the property. Berwick Community Television has been working for almost a year on a documentary video of those efforts. The video includes interviews of town officials and volunteers, former Prime employees and owners, and historic photos and video. The documentary,
“Old Town, New Village,” will be presented on BCTV channels beginning January 2. The Town of Berwick has succeeded in attracting a developer, Great Falls Construction of Gorham to return the property to being a vital town center. Berwick Community Television is completely funded by franchise fees paid through Comcast cable subscriptions. BCTV provides public, educa-
tional, and government programs that are informative and community-driven. “Old Town, New Village,” will be shown on BCTV Channel 2 and Channel 95 in Berwick beginning January 2. Worldwide, the documentary will be available through the BCTV website, www.berwicktv.org, and through the BCTV Facebook page and YouTube channel. (Photo from Envision Berwick’s Facebook page)

USS Santa Fe Sub Safely Undocked at PNSY KITTERY Completion of maintenance tasks on the USS Santa Fe, a Los Angeles class nuclear-powered fast attack submarine, took place recently at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The Santa Fe and her crew of 16 officers and 127 enlisted personnel arrived at the shipyard on August 15, 2019. Completion of this key event continues the critical path to deliver Santa Fe but also maintains the vital construction timeline for the Dry Dock #1 super flood basin at the shipyard. The facility construction projects
around Dry Dock #1 directly support the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program designed to improve the efficiency of the naval shipyards to better execute maintenance and modernization of ships and submarines to provide the Navy the nation needs. The submarine is powered by the General Electric S6G pressurized water reactor and can reach a surface speed of 20 knots (23 mph; 37 km/h) and a submerged speed of 20 knots (23 mph; 37 km/h) and is fitted with Tomahawk and Harpoon missiles.
