23rd Annual Tommyknocker Holiday Tree Lighting

BY DANNY TOMLINSON Central City was THE PLACE to be on Friday evening, December 3. Of course, Central City is always THE place to be.

Nearly 60 friends gathered at the beautiful City Christmas Tree at the corner of Nevada and Main Streets, a

little after 6 pm. They each were given a candle, and as the magic moment approached, the candles were lit. At exactly 6:30 p.m., Aidarfa Kima, the First Lady of Central, threw the switch and the tree was lighted.

We’re having a lot of fun publishing the Weekly RegisterCall (WRC). I enjoy meeting new friends along the way; everyone has been very supportive and complimentary about the historic newspaper that is the oldest weekly newspaper in Colorado - and still going strong.

I’ve learned that Black Hawk derived its name from the Black Hawk Gold Mining Company, which was organized in 1859 at Rock Island, Illinois. The company,in turn, was named for the promontory in the Rock River at Rock Island, which was named for the famous Sauk Indian Chief, Black Hawk.

By 1864, the Black Hawk Gold Mining Company had incorporated into a stock company, organized under the laws of the State of New York. The Black Hawk Gold Mining Company owned and operated the Black Hawk Mill, a quartz stamp mill on the west bank of North Clear Creek, just north of what is now the intersection of Highway 119 and Selak Street.

John Gregory, a miner, came from Georgia searching Colorado mountain creeks for gold and eventually finding the mother gold lode on May 6, 1859 at “Gregory Gulch.” The gold strike revived the Pike’s Peak gold rush and started the “Richest Square Mile On Earth” in Black Hawk and Central

City. History relates that he died poor back in his home state of Georgia.

Black Hawk became the second oldest incorporated city in Colorado on March 11, 1864, with Denver being number one, incorporated in 1861. Black Hawk has the historic distinction as the host site of the first lode gold discovery in Colorado. (Reported in The House Journal of The Territory of Colorado, Third Session 1864.)

Black Hawk senior WRC reporter, Don Ireland, and I toured the Black Hawk city council chamber several weeks ago and I was greatly impressed by the preservation of local history surrounding and displayed on the walls of the hallowed chamber.

Great historic preservation by Mayor Spellman, staff, and his chamber associates. No doubt the finest chamber in Colorado befitting the second oldest incorporated city and reported in the oldest weekly newspaper in Colorado founded in 1862.

I’ve been a subscriber to the WRC for most of my newspaper career dating back to Central City Mayor Bill Russell, who owned and published this newspaper for decades. I was mayor of Craig and owned the local newspaper and he was mayor of Central City sharing similar publishing

duties along with community service. He loved to pick on the Gilpin County Commissioners that was ongoing for years.

The information I used for this weekly column I saved from a WRC newspaper section dated April 10, 2014 when Black Hawk celebrated the sesquicentennial anniversary from 1864 to 2014. *** Great turn out last Friday evening for the annual tree lighting event and potluck dinner at the famed Teller House. The Holiday Bazaar was well publicized and a great place to shop for Christmas gifts. Our local reporter David Josselyn performed with the Belvedere Players in his attractive attire. Local Masonic Lodge leader Danny Tomlinson used the magic of his camera and photo prowess to capture the event for the WRC in this week’s newspaper. *** Holiday lights are up in both cities and the lights are special as we need some light in our lives as we continue to battle the pandemic that won’t quite go away.

We will persevere through it all and continue to help each other through these troubling times. If you think back in history about what our miners lived through, they really had it rough everyday of their lives. I think they would trade their hardships for ours today.

Gilpin County offers helping hand for Adams County children There are times when helping needy children calls for doing the right thing – regardless of where that need exists. That philosophy was demonstrated by the Gilpin County Board of County Commissioners during their regular meeting Nov. 24.

With unanimous consent, the commissioners gave tentative approval an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) with Adams County for child-welfare assessments. Gil-

pin County Human Services Director Laura Solomon said the agreement will allow two Gilpin County workers to help Adams County handle child-welfare work, if they are needed. The agreement stipulates that Gilpin County staffers can provide services on behalf of Adams County after they have completed their regular Gilpin-work duties. Gilpin County will be reimbursed by Adams County

for services provided.

County Attorney Brad Benning said the Gilpin and Adams workers who will provide services are primarily state employees.

Solomon said counties typically have the IGAs in place to help one another in the event of extra workloads in one community or if another agency has a staffing shortage. She cited that Jefferson County once did the same

work in Gilpin County when it didn’t have workers. “This is something that supports child safety in Colorado. It’s the right thing to do,” she said.

Noted BOCC Chair Linda Isenhart, “The focus of this is on children and their families.” The final version of the IGA was expected to be voted upon at the Dec. 7 BOCC meeting.

PLANNING VACANCIES FILLED In other business at the Nov. 24 meeting, the commissioners named Melissa Harless to a three-year term as a voting member on the Gilpin County Planning Commission and Kurtis Duncan to a two-year term as a regular voting member. Jeffrey Green was appointed to a three-year term as a first alternative member on the commission.

USDA Forest Service offers cut-your-own Christmas tree permits

On December 3, the USDA Forest Service of the Rocky Mountain Region announced the offering of a “cut-your-own” Christmas tree opportunity throughout the Rocky Mountain Region this year. A permit is required and can be purchased from $8 $20, depending on individual forest pricing. These permits

are for personal use only and local restrictions may apply.

There is a limit of two to five trees per household.

The general rules for cutting your own Christmas tree include (1) The trunk size should not exceed six inches in diameter – this is strictly enforced in some areas and local exceptions may

(4) Blasting, welding, or operating a torch with an open flame without being in

This includes but is not limited to fuses, blasting caps, fireworks, rockets, exploding targets, tracers, and incendiary ammunition. (Fireworks are always prohibited on National Forest lands).

Be sure to visit the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests’ Know Before You Go page to see fire restriction orders and maps. Fire managers will continue to monitor conditions across the rest of the Forests and Grassland and the need for further fire restrictions.

Violation of Stage 1 fire restrictions could result in a maximum fine of $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for more than six months, or both. If responsible for causing a wildfire, one could be held accountable for suppression costs of that fire.

Late fall brings other changes to the Forests and Grassland as well, with many roads and recreation facilities closing for the season. Hunting is also taking place in many areas, so we encourage everyone (pets included) to wear blaze orange as a safety precaution.

Fourth-graders may obtain a free tree permit by visiting Recreation.gov. Apply by using the Every Kid Outdoors pass by checking the box indicating

you have a pass and entering the pass number. A $2.50 processing fee will be applied.

New Gregory Plaza retail shops open for holiday shopping

The Mountain Poppy Boutique and Gift shop, Woodbury Collective and Basin + Bend Outdoor Gear and Fly Shop will be open this weekend to introduce themselves to Gilpin County shoppers prior to Christmas. After the holidays conclude, two of the three businesses will establish regular hours of operation – most likely in conjunction with the official opening of Black Hawk’s Gregory Plaza next spring.

“We have tons of great gifts for just about everyone,” said Sadie Schultz, who co-owns the Woodbury Erik Myhre sets up shop at the new Basin + Bend Outdoor Collective Gear and Fly Shop in Gregory Plaza.

A “Christmas miracle” wasn’t exactly required to get three new retail shops open for the holidays in Black Hawk’s new Gregory Plaza.

However, the business owners seemed to hustle like holiday elves and flying reindeer last week by putting in long hours, decorating, unpacking inventory and preparing their stores to open - just in

The Woodbury Collective will be open for retail customers from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. for two weekends, Friday, Dec. 10 through Sunday, Dec. 12, and Dec. 17-19. The shop will sell a variety of artwork, custom jewelry, crystals, journals, wood works, hand-crafted toys, soaps, body products and clothing in the space.

The offerings will include the “Mountain Bound Pottery” brand, created by Gianola, who became well-known in the area because of the success of the line. “I would say we carry local handmade, mindful and intentional gifts,” according to Gianola.

18th Annual Winter Arts Festival set to entertain this weekend

This weekend, December 11-12, the 18th Annual Winter Arts Festival will be held at the Gilpin County Community Center.

The rumor is that Santa Claus is even going to return with photo opportunities. (Contact the Gilpin County Community Center for photo times and potential available vendor tables).

Entertainment will be abundant with live music, crafts and goodies, food served by Gilpin Boosters, arts, and holiday activities, games, along with several opportunities to shop local to support local artists and vendors.

The Friends of Gilpin County Community Center will be offering sponsored activities, facepainting for the children, free hot chocolate and cider, and candy canes for Santa to give. They also encourage attendees to stop by

their table for a free “Heart of the Community” lollipop, and chat with Gilpinites about their initiatives and service to the Community Center.

In partnership with Friends of the Gilpin County Community Center, United Power is helping to sponsor the Winter Arts Festival to provide the fun and goodies.

NFL Hall of Fame player Champ Bailey visits Central City

It’s not every day that you see former professional football stars hanging out in Central City.

However, NFL Hall of Fame inductee Champ Bailey and former Denver Broncos Dave Studdard, Mike Harden and Ron Egloff were in the spotlight at Grand Z Casino and Hotel on Gregory Street Sunday night. The four players anchored a fan promotion for the PlayMaverick™ sports-betting app in the Central City casino’s Sportsbook Room.

About 100 fans – mostly wearing Broncos apparel – turned out to meet the NFL alumni and watch the Denver Broncos’ game at Kansas City. The most-seen jersey was #24, Bailey’s jersey number during the 10 years with the team. Even fans wearing jerseys for the Chiefs, Chargers, Cowboys, Saints and Chiefs got in line for autographs, photos, jersey signings, handshakes and hugs

with Bailey and the other former Broncos.

Bailey told the Weekly Register-Call that he enjoyed coming to the event and the chance to meet fans. “I love the Broncos. The Broncos have a special place in my heart,” he told the audience during a question-and-answer session at halftime of the game, which the Broncos lost, 22-9. Two Maverick-branded footballs, signed by all the Broncos alum, were awarded as door prizes.

Bailey, who was drafted

by Washington in 1999, was traded to Denver in 2004 and played for 10 seasons, retiring following the team’s appearance in Super Bowl XLVIII. He was selected to 12 Pro Bowls in his career, the most ever for a cornerback.

In 2019, he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.

Bailey is widely considered one of the greatest cornerbacks in NFL history and the

best cornerback of his era.

Prior to his professional career, Bailey was an All-American college football player for the Georgia Bulldogs.

The other former Broncos also spent time mingling with fans. Studdard was a tackle for 10 years (1979-88) with Denver and helped protect quarterbacks Craig Morton and John Elway. The team had seven winning seasons, finished twice with .500 seasons and appeared in two Super Bowls during his playing years. Harden, a defensive back from 1980-88, was part of two Denver teams that won AFC championships. Egloff, a tight end from 1977-83, was a rookie when the Broncos reached Super Bowl XII in and was a broadcaster with NFL Monday Night Football.

Cripple Creek: Similar, yet different, to Gilpin’s gaming cities

Jackasses. Bed races. Luxury spa treatments. Beer, bacon or chili tastings. A night at the opera. Getting a massage or facial.

No matter which of these appeal to you, chances are you can find at least one of them in Central City, Black Hawk or their southern “cousin,” Cripple Creek in Teller County. Most visitors who travel to the three mountain towns come to play slot machines or indulge in other games of chance. Those who live in the three cities host a variety of festivals and cultural events to further lure visitors.

Of course, there’s also history, which plays a significant role in coaxing outsiders because all three rural communities contain a treasure trove of old mines, museums and attractions.

The gold-mining era of the 1800s played a major role in attracting settlers to Colorado.

Life in those pioneering days and the rough-and-tumble Old West stokes the imaginations of visitors, who ponder how their ancestors lived and survived in times without electricity, automobiles, lawmen and running water.

The main streets in Central City and Cripple Creek feature many two-story buildings that have been preserved to show how they looked more than a century ago. Casinos were constructed inside some of the old buildings in the early 1990s, but the facades remained unchanged. A few casinos in Black Hawk were built using the same concept.

However, many of Black Hawk’s newer, larger casinos didn’t follow that design and were built to look like a mini–Las Vegas. The majority of Black Hawk’s casinos – regardless of their design – are located in what the city considers its GOLD District (Gaming and Outstanding Lodging).

It’d be inaccurate to say Black Hawk has no interest in its historic roots because of its towering, well-lit casinos featuring spas, luxury rooms and swimming pools. Quite the contrary: In Black Hawk’s typical “go big or go home” approach, the city is spending tens of millions of dollars to showcase its historic past as part of its ongoing renaissance program.

Black Hawk’s latest tribute to its past, Gregory Plaza, will open next spring. The lavish showpiece invites visitors to take a walking stroll into a different era. The plaza

features a museum dedicated to volunteer firefighters, including hand-pulled equipment from the 1800s and an antique fire truck. Next door is a restored church with stained-glass windows that sparkle in the sunlight. Three restored homes, now retail shops, give visitors additional insight. The entire plaza is in the shadow of a towering, four-faced antique-style clock.

The timepiece, the “Founders’ Clock,” overlooks historic plaques, colorful landscaping, benches, public restrooms and a hand-laid brick plaza. Future plans for the surrounding area include an $800,000 “Grand Staircase,” which will feature a mining head frame.

Another plan in the works is for a mining museum, which will be across from Gregory Plaza. There are a number of historic, preserved homes from the 1800s along streets overlooking the new plaza.

The city offers painting grants annually to help owners keep the historic homes colorful and appealing.

It is his intention to put together a building using the theme of the Rocky Mountain Bates and incorporating the tin of the War Dance for a small portion of the proposed project. Preservation Administrator Alan Granruth concurred with Fink that the present structure should remain standing at last until formal plans were presented. Chairman Don Mattivi told Wing, “It would be more believable to the commission if plans are presented.” Wing indicated that the War Dance Mill might collapse and create a larger problem than now exists, during the time it would take to formulate plans. He said he hauled mining/milling equipment from the Gregory Street site to the Coeur d’Alene Mine on Gunnell Hill, where the Gilpin County Historical Society is restoring the Coeur d’Alene as a museum. He indicated he did this at his own expense and he hoped the commission would now give him some consideration. Jeff Casey said that the War Dance engineer, Huey Rachel, had indicated at the previous meeting he felt the War Dance would stand for a while longer as it is. Casey told Wing and Snyder to think about safety of the mill and anyone who happened to be on the property, and to secure the doors which have been flapping open in the wind. The commission tabled discussion until a later date.

Died: Kathleen O’Grady McCullar, widow of the late George S. McCullar, was laid to rest at Fort Logan National Cemetery on Wednesday, December 4, 1991. Reverend Melvin Thompson said the graveside prayer and a rosary was said at Horan and McConaty Family Chapel, Denver, on Monday.

Mass of Christian Burial was at Our Lady of Fatima at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3, Reverend Ralph Frisch officiating. Mrs. McCullar was a housing authority office manager for several years. She was born on September 7, 1918, to Concordia Tiehen and Hugh B. O’Grady in Dawson, Nebraska, one of six children.

At the time of death, she lived in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, and was a patient at Lutheran Medical Center.

Survivors include sons Gary McCullar and his wife Carla; George McCullar and wife Pat; daughter Maureen and husband Tom Robb; sisters Carolyn Bryant and Sister Teresa O’Grady, O.S.B.; brothers Bill and John O’Grady; seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. One brother, Donald O’Grady, preceded her in death. Pallbearers were: Mike Davis, Gerry, Pat, John, and Tim O’Grady, and Phil Prince.

It is quite necessary that mention should be made of the weather. Really, it is impossible for me to portray my thoughts, as my descriptive adjectives would be such that the U.S. mail would not allow the Register-Call to pass through the post office. For the past ten days, thermometers have registered anywhere from 20 degrees below zero to 30 degrees above, which occurred Wednesday morning.

However, Denver has experienced much colder weather than has been experienced here, as attested by the weather report of Tuesday night, when Denver had a temperature of 4 degrees below zero, and thermometers in Central City showed 12 degrees above. Colorado has experienced the lowest temperatures as chronicled by the weather bureau for the past sixty years, and as we had a cold and rainy summer, and no Indian Summer, and with winter only starting next week, we wonder what the cause is.

Central City Lodge No. 557, Order of Elks, will follow their regular annual greeting to al the children in the county by providing a Christmas tree at the Elk’s Theatre, on Thursday afternoon, December 24, at 2 o’clock, which will be presided over by a real Santa Claus, who will greet the children personally and give each one a bag of goodies in commemoration of Christmas. The lodge will also provide a movie picture for the pleasure of the little ones, all of which will be free, and they hope all the children will be present and enjoy the occasion.

Died: Mrs. Matilda Davidson, a Central City pioneer, who died Friday in a Pueblo hospital, will be buried here Monday, following funeral services at the Olinger Mortuary at 3:30 p.m. Interment will be in Crown Hill Cemetery. Almost all of Mrs. Davidson’s life was wrapped up with the progress and decadence of the once flourishing mining town. She went there when she was 24 years old and remained there until she came to Denver two and a half years ago to live with her only child, Mrs. Laura Simmons of Hudson Street. Two years after she settled in Central City she was married to a fellow employee at the old Teller House, a hotel famous in the day. Mrs. Davidson was born in Johnstown, Pa., 84 years ago.

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by a brother, Watson Duncan of Shipman, Ill. Her husband died in 1922.—Denver Post.

THE GILPIN COUNTY BOYS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM OPENS THE SEASON WITH 2 WINS AND 1 LOSS The Gilpin County Eagles boys’ varsity basketball team opened their season with new Head Coach Lisa Boulter along with Steve Boulter as the new Assistant Coach. Lisa was Assistant Coach for seven years with Paul Hanson who stepped down as Head Coach at the end of last season.

Lisa is a Gilpin High School graduate who went on to play college basketball at Colorado Northwestern. In addition to coaching Gilpin volleyball for

eight years, Lisa has coached boys’ basketball in various venues for the past 17 years.

Coach Boulter indicated that the team will be working on defense as a main goal this season, a skill that has improved significantly in each of the first three games. The team will also be working to improve their shooting percentages for the upcoming non-league game against the Vail Christian Saints on Friday, December 10 at 7 p.m.

The Eagles opened their season on November 20, with a non-conference game at home against the Estes Park Bobcats. The Eagles lost the game with a score of Bobcats 57 to the Eagles 12. The Idaho Springs Gazette said that “George Kimball had such an immense body of ore in the Old Town

It is reported that the home pool working the West Whiting Mine on Gunnell Hill cleaned up 300 ounces of gold retort from their milling ore treated in the stamp mills during the month of November, the gold selling at $16.50 per ounce, making a total of close to $5,000.

McKay and associates have started up the West Leavenworth Mine, in Russell District, under a lease and bond proposition, and are busy overhauling the shaft and levels previous to determining future operations. The property has been idle for over nine years.

The business of the Denver Mint for 1871 amounted to $1,122,707,023, an increase over the former year of $116,658.

Rev. Dr. Balcom held religious services in Schmitz’s saloon on Lawrence Street and had over one hundred hearers.

Speaking of the admission of Colorado as a state, the Denver Tribune said, “The territory was far in advance, both socially, normally, and financially, of any territory that ever precede it, previous to the date of admission.”

The school exhibition held in this city on Thursday evening was a grand success and evinced the greatest care upon the principal and teachers in the training of so many young voices.

“Little Rain Drops” and “They Didn’t Think” were recited by Master Willie Jenkins and Miss Nellie Rockwell; a recitation by Master Bennie Thomas, “I’m Going to be an Editor,” and an address to the American Flag was sweetly rendered by Miss Lizzie Frey, followed by a drama, “The Coming Woman,” and a tableau.

The annual exhibition o the public schools in Black Hawk was held at the Presbyterian Church, and mention was made of Miss Anna Congdon’s composition, the declamation of “Hagar” by Belle Bradley, the declamation by George Knifton, and also one by Joseph Tomlinson, and “The Windsor Glencoe,” by Clara Oyler were enthusiastically well received.

The last brick was laid on the Teller House on Saturday afternoon last.

Visiting celebrities and stars are nothing new in Central City

Central City doesn’t have a “Walk of Fame” honoring celebrities, the way Hollywood does.

Then again, maybe it should.

The town at 1.5 miles above sea level isn’t known as a mountain getaway for the rich, famous and elite. However, it has a reputation for attracting celebrities that dates back more than 150 years.

On Sunday, the Grand Z Casino and Hotel in Central City brought some NFL football standouts to its sportsbook area (see related

story), including NFL Hall of Fame player Champ Bailey.

Nearly 20 years ago, the Grand Z had different owners and was called Harvey’s Wagon Wheel Casino. During those Harvey’s Wagon Wheel Casino days, the voice of comedian Bill Cosby was used for the casino’s radio commercials. He also performed his stand-up shows at the Central City Opera.

Cosby won an Emmy award for his role in “I Spy” TV drama in the 1960s and later starred in a family comedy,

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper has made several visits to Central City, where he’s stopped to chat with Buddy Schmaltz at Dostal Alley. restaurant has been featured in numerous TV programs and media reports over the years. Buddy Schmaltz, one of the family members and a noted brew master, has been a local celebrity, too. He’s told how he and the staff have created award-winning micro brewed beers to TV cameras and newspaper reporters.

Schmaltz also has been Central City’s mayor, a Gilpin County commissioner and involved with numerous local activities – as have members of his family.

John Hickenlooper, the first-term U.S. Senator from Colorado, has been another often-spotted celebrity in Central City over the years.

Hickenlooper, formerly the state’s governor and Denver’s mayor, visited Dostal Alley several times to chat with locals and enjoy a beer. On

occasion, Hickenlooper stepped behind the bar and served beer to patrons.

Dr. David Forsyth, executive director and curator for the Gilpin Historical Society, said he doesn’t know the exact number of famous people who’ve come to Central City.

“That’s a very big question because there have been a lot.

There are, of course, all the famous people who performed at the Opera House over the years, which is a huge list.

There have been random visitors like (author) Jack Kerouac and (ventriloquist) Edgar Bergen. Bob Hope reportedly came to an opera, although I can’t prove it.

intended to help secure Black Hawk’s reputation as a “destination resort for adults,” according to Mayor David Spellman. To appeal to adult outdoor enthusiasts, Black Hawk is developing more than 700 acres of hiking and mountain biking trails. A highend “campground,” which will include 50 Airstream luxury trailers for lodging, is planned for the hilltop near Artisans’ Point, offering scenic mountain views.

The success of Central City and Black Hawk are key economic drivers for Gilpin County and Cripple Creek’s financial gains help support Teller County. During last year’s pandemic, all Colorado casinos closed for three months due to state health orders. “We took a $2.3 million hit for the city,” said Moser of Cripple Creek’s closing. Similarly, revenues in the two Gilpin County gaming towns were devastated as the result of Covid-19. Budgets were slashed by the county and the two cities. When casinos reopened, many slot machines remained unplugged because of social-distancing regulations, further limiting gaming income.

This year, casinos have seen patrons returning in steady numbers to all three gaming towns. In September, Black Hawk officials reported casino revenue was 25 percent higher than it was two years earlier for the same month.

Since the inception of gaming in Colorado, the state has garnered $18 billion from casino revenues and $315 in historic preservation funding as the result of monies generated from the three gaming communities.

Sports betting was approved

by Colorado voters in 2019 and the first wagers were placed in May 2020 – at the height of the pandemic.

Despite the setback, the initial year of sports betting ended on June 30, 2021. The result: the new activity provided $7,945,834 for the state’s water fund. Another $600,000 from betting revenues was used for state administrative purposes and to fund a gambling-problem hotline.

The recent return of full schedules for college and pro football, and with fans returning to the stadiums, has bolstered the current 202122 sports-betting revenue year, according to the state.

Total wagers in October 2021 broke another record with the highest handle so far to date that the state has seen since legal sports betting began.

Wagers placed on football contributed to the recordshattering month with almost half, 45.4%, of all bets placed in October 2021 on NFL and NCAA football games.

The total handle for October 2021 was $491,453,341, a 20.36% increase over September’s figures. Sportsbetting taxes collected by the state in October 2021 totaled $1,246,804.

The majority of sports bets – 98 percent – are wagered via online apps associated with casinos in the three Colorado gaming towns. There are 25 online sport-betting operators in Colorado and 17 casinos have in-house betting devices.

Despite the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on sports betting, the three gaming towns don’t receive a penny of the revenues. The 17 casinos in Cripple Creek, Central City and Black Hawk have created sportsbook

Black Hawk found a way to make up for some of the income it lost when slot machines were pulled from casinos and replaced with sports-betting kiosks or stadium-style games, in which a group of people can wager simultaneously: i.e., keno, roulette and baccarat.

Last month, 87% of Black Hawk voters approved two ballot issues, which allows the city to start collecting about $1 million on device fees for sports-betting kiosks and stadium games in 2022. It is unknown if Cripple Creek and Central City leaders will attempt to launch ballot measures next year to mirror

Clear Creek County: Miner’s Candle fire update On Sunday, December 5 at 4:46 p.m. the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Department reported that the Miner’s Candle Fire was at 50% containment. Evacuation orders remained in place. A briefing for the public was scheduled for Monday morning,

Black Hawk’s move.

By population, Cripple Creek is the biggest gaming town, with 1,155 residents, according to the 2020 U.S. Census. Central City boasts about 700 and tiny Black Hawk has about 125 residents.

However, as gaming revenues go, tiny Black Hawk stands tall as the giant of the group.

Black Hawk’s 15 casinos generated about 73.6% of Colorado’s gaming revenues in 2019. Cripple Creek accounted for 16.8% of state gaming income and Central City casinos represented 8.9%.

By comparison, Black Hawk’s gaming revenue was four times that of Cripple Creek and eight times the amount generated by Central City.

Cripple Creek, established in 1892, emphasizes it is the

gaming town with the highest elevation in the state – 9,494 feet above sea level. At 8,510 feet, Central City was founded in 1886 but dates back to the 1859 gold rush. Black Hawk was established in that same era of the Colorado Gold Rush. Its motto is “Preserving the Past, Preparing for the Future, Still Making History.”

Although the three gaming “cousins” have similarities and differences, they share a common “all in the family” mentality for this 2021 holiday season. Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek have put up holiday lights, decorations, trees and garland, hoping to welcome holiday visitors and invite them to enjoy their festive scenery, gaming, shopping and dining choices of the season.

Everyone cheered and held their candles high. A couple of Christmas carols were sung by the crowd and then they paraded up Main Street toward Eureka Street and the Historic Teller House, singing carols all the way while holding their candles for all to see.

After arriving at the Teller House, a few more carols were enjoyed and the celebrants then proceeded to the 2nd Floor of the Teller House for a wonderful community potluck. By this time, the crowd had grown to more than 150 cheerful friends and neighbors enjoying the spirit of the season and the great potluck dinner.

During the dinner, an Ugly Christmas Sweater contest was held and Jeremy Kaiser won in a close contest. The Belvidere Players then came

on stage to entertain the partygoers with the “Legend of the Tommyknockers.”

The evening was really a wonderful time for young and old alike and for old friends and new. It really showed how great small-town America is and how beautiful the Christmas season is, especially in a historic area like Central City with such a strong sense of community.

As the party wound down, the always-gracious hosts at JKQ, Joe and Kara Tinucci, and Denise were sharing their hospitality with guests in the Face Bar. Vendors were setting up displays and tables for the Holiday Bazaar which started on Saturday morning.

We were back at the Bazaar on Saturday and the crowds had turned out for the Bazaar.

What a wonderful weekend in Central City.

New show installed for Gilpin Arts - Briggs of Fiber and Briggs of Clay at Washington Hall

BY DAVID JOSSELYN A colorful montage of fantastic works of art by wife and husband team Ruth and Steve Briggs is now showing in Washington Hall. Ruth is a fiber artist (although she prefers the word quilter) and Steve is a potter and they both create beautiful pieces of art that is not only brilliantly displayed in the gallery, but also for sale.

Steve Briggs First and foremost, Steve would like people to know that this show is all about his wife, Ruth, and he’s just “filler.”

Steve has been working with pottery for almost 40 years.

He was born in Iowa, but grew up near Las Cruces, New Mexico. He attended the University of Wyoming and then taught English in Montrose, Colorado before transferring to the Boulder Valley School District. He left teaching to be an independent pottery instructor for both Boulder and Broomfield.

Steve first met Ruth at his hometown high school in New Mexico. Surprisingly, Steve describes Ruth as “a potter, a very good one, good one,” before she turned to fiber art.

When working with clay, Steve says that thinking is secondary to the physical things; you must “be receptive to things going on.”

Ruth Briggs Ruth tells her story that she started as a landscape painter in Las Cruces. She followed Steve to Wyoming where she continued to paint until they moved to Colorado where she took up ceramics at the University of Denver. While attending D.U. in 1968, the school administration was more interested in the newest fad coming out of New York

which was abstract paintings.

That didn’t mesh with Ruth, and out of anger at the stubbornness of the school, she switched to pottery. Ruth began a mail-order pottery business shipping her pieces all over the United States, Canada, Europe, and Mexico.

The demand and stress from that business grew wearisome, so Ruth decided to switch to quilting for her own mental health. Ruth had always been a quilter creating traditional bed quilts, but after giving up pottery, she found that she could create beautiful works of art. Amazingly, Ruth is self-taught and originally hated sewing. After her aunt passed, she was left a small inheritance that she used to buy a horse trailer and a sewing machine. Creating a full quilt can take 200 hours or more.

When Ruth is designing a quilt, she prefers a traditional grid pattern. Quilts are built in three layers; the backing, which can be any spare cloth, the cotton batting, and then the front squares which reflect the artists’ vision. Ruth has done double sided quilts in which the backing is as important as the front, but her pieces on display are all front facing only. Although the industry is leaning toward “fiber art,” she still prefers the term quilt. Two of the quilts displayed are award winning; one was Best of Show last season. Ruth likes to quilt in series and most quilts in Washington Hall are of the series Mending Fences and Security, although one called “Indian Peaks Wilderness,” is a unique creation featuring photographs from around the land they live. Before starting a quilt, Ruth knows “exactly what I’m going to do and what

Gilpin Arts The Gilpin County Arts Association has been hard at work filling their unique gallery during the winter months ever since heat was installed in 2018 making it a year-round gallery. The Briggs display is just one of a series of magnificent events planned over the next two years.

“My Three Bobs”

Around 2008 I attended a “Poetry in the Branches” conference at Poets House in lower Manhattan, New York City.

This trip was generously funded by the Friends of the Library in Gilpin County. The purpose of the conference was to bring librarians in from all over the country and educate, motivate, and inspire them to develop poetry programs of all kinds when they returned to their libraries. It lasted for three days and included a keynote address by Robert Hass, Poet Laureate of the U.S. (1995-1997), and my onetime college professor at the State University of NY at Buffalo in the 1960s. I took half a dozen classes from Bob as an undergraduate student majoring in English. He was available all three days of the seminar to teach and consult and everyone had the opportunity to interact one-on-one with him.

I reminded him of the trailers on campus that constituted the English Department annex for a number of years in the late 1960s, and told him I was often present in his classes, sitting in the last row in the back, and learning everything I could about poetry and literature.

More often than not, I would have been coming off an all-night shift, 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., as an orderly at Buffalo General Hospital, and taking the Main Street bus to the campus in time to catch his early morning class in the trailer. Having the opportunity, some 40 years later, to see and learn from him again was a minor miracle. When I asked the Friends of the Library to send me to Poets House, they must have sensed the lump in my throat and maybe saw the joyful tear forming in my eye, because they immediately voted to approve my trip.

When I arrived in New York, I had the customary goosebumps catching a taxi at La Guardia and wending my way into the city and through Greenwich Village to the

Washington Square Hotel which was immortalized in “Diamonds and Rust,” that beautiful song

by Joan Baez. In her song, she sees Bob Dylan “smiling out the window of that crummy hotel over Washington Square,” and crummy doesn’t even begin to describe it.

When I checked in, they offered an available room with one king-size bed, which I accepted. I took the elevator up a few flights and opened the door to my room, and was surprised when it only opened half way, since it stopped when it hit the bed. I squeezed my way in and surveyed the room. If I sidled along the wall and around the front of the bed, I could almost make it to the far side and the tiny bathroom.

I backed my way out and returned to the front desk and said I needed to change to a room with two beds, thinking it would surely have to be bigger, and certainly couldn’t have less free space than the room I just left. They re-assigned me and I went up and tried again. This time the door actually opened all the way, and I entered a compact room, with two beds, a writing table and chair, a TV, and a small but adequate bathroom and shower.

There was room to move around without having to take sideways steps and I thought to myself, “Bob Dylan probably stayed in a room just like this—maybe even this very room—so I guess it’s good enough for me.”

For many years I have enjoyed the friendship of a lifelong resident of the Village, Bob Horan, who is a singer and songwriter and who was part of the 60s folk scene that included Judy Collins, Jack Elliot, Dave van Ronk, Arlo Guthrie, Odetta and Dylan himself. Bob played regular gigs at The Back Fence, on the corner of Bleeker and Thompson, in the hub of Greenwich Village activity. I contacted Bob and we met for Continued on page 18

CDOT and Uber provide ride credits to prevent impaired driving for the hoildays In December, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is teaming up with Uber to provide $10,000 in ride credits valued at $15 as part of a promotion to reduce impaired driving in the state. The Governor’s Highway Safety Administration (GHSA) is launching the program in five states, including Colorado. The campaign is part of a grant CDOT received from the GHSA to help reduce impaired driving.

During the Thanksgiving holiday period, 11 people were killed on Colorado roads. Not since 2008 have that many people been killed on Colorado roads over Thanksgiving. Most of those fatal crashes involved drugs or alcohol, according to preliminary data.

From December 1 – January 3, 2022, Coloradans can redeem the $15 ride credit using the code “HOLIDAYSAFE” in the Promotions section of the Uber app. The ride credits, available statewide, are limited to one use per person and valid only while supplies last. The credits must be redeemed from 5 p.m. - 5 a.m.

To date in 2021, there have been 220 impaireddriving fatalities in

Colorado, accounting for 36% of all traffic deaths this year. If current trends continue, 2021 will be the deadliest year on Colorado roads since 2004. To date, there have been 617 fatalities, which is 6% higher than this time last year. Fatalities involving an impaired driver are up 15% from last year.

Though anyone can use the discount to stay safe, CDOT is specifically marketing the offer to people who are hosting holiday parties. Called the “Ultimate Party Host” campaign, the promotion aims to prevent impaired driving by offering a solution — free sober rides to or from holiday gatherings. CDOT will also host pop-up events at select liquor stores in the state.

“Holidays are meant for celebrating. We want Coloradans to enjoy these special moments without worrying about how they’re going to get home safely,” said said Darrell Lingk, Highway Safety Office director at CDOT. “Whether it’s a sober friend, a ridehailing service or public transportation, there are plenty of options to plan ahead and secure a sober ride.

more than 20,000 people are arrested for DUI — that’s an average of 54 DUIs every day.

An increasing number of DUI’s involve a combination of alcohol with cannabis or other drugs, a dangerous combination that significantly increases impairment.

“There are already too many families that will have empty chairs at the dinner table this holiday season because of the pandemic,” said GHSA Executive Director Jonathan Adkins. “It’s tragic and frustrating to see even more lives lost on our roads from completely preventable drunk and drug-impaired driving crashes. GHSA is proud to partner with Uber to help Colorado provide drivers a safe and convenient alternative to getting behind the wheel impaired.”

As part of The Heat Is On campaign, heightened DUI enforcement will occur from December 15 - 29 to help remove impaired drivers from roadways during the holidays. The New Year’s Eve enforcement period will follow from December 30 – January 2.

According to Dr. Forsyth, perhaps the most famous movie filmed in Central City was “The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox,” starring Goldie Hawn and George Segal, in 1976. Part of a 1960s TV series, “Route 66,” was filmed in Central City in 1963.

Actor Tom Mix, a cowboy film star in the early 1900s, made three movies in the Central City area in 1910 and 1911, said Dr. Forsyth. Mix appeared in several hundred movies – all but nine of which were silent films – during his career.

Globe for her TV show, “Roseanne.”

Gilpin Historical Society’s January 2018 newsletter, The Nugget, suggested legendary showman and circus owner P.T. Barnum visited Central City a few years into its goldmining era. “Some sources state that Barnum visited Central City in 1869, but if he did, no newspapers found it worthy to mention. Barnum’s earliest recorded visit to Central City came the next year, when he addressed a gathering of the Miners’ and Mechanics’ Institute. The visit was part of Barnum’s lecture tour through the state, where, at each stop, he spoke on his rules for succeeding in life as found in his book,” the newsletter said.

In 1877, Barnum returned to Central City with one of his best-known circus performers,

Charles Sherwood Stratton – called General Tom Thumb – who performed in town.

General Thumb, who was 35 inches tall, toured with Barnum around the world as one of the showman’s circus “oddities” (as they were called at that time). The tour included a performance before England’s Queen Victoria in 1846.

During the late 1930s, the Weekly Register-Call reported Davis Dresser visited the office to research old newspapers. According to The Nugget, “Davis Dresser was in fact - one of the best-known mystery writers of his time.”

One of Dresser’s leading story characters for several books was Michael Shayne, described as “a tall, red-haired, wise-cracking, Irish-American detective.”

Central City’s most famous

actor, Walter Schuyler Ladd (who went by Schuyler Ladd), was born in Central City on September 3, 1884. His father, Charles Ladd, was one of the partners in the Ladd and Schuyler Hardware Store on Lawrence Street. Schuyler Ladd became a well-known stage actor and had roles in three silent movies in the World War I era, according to The Nugget. After he passed, Ladd’s ashes were buried in Central City’s City Cemetery.

Actress Mae West, frequently known as a sassymouthed sex siren, performed her play, “Diamond Lil,” to sold-out audiences at the Central City Opera House in July and August 1949. At the time, she was considered the biggest star to ever visit Colorado, according to The Nugget. West, whose career included numerous

film comedies and stage performances in the 1930s and 1940s, was known for her iconic double and triple entendre lines. Wikipedia lists West as “an American stage and film actress, playwright, screenwriter, singer, and sex symbol whose entertainment career spanned over seven decades. She was known for her breezy sexual independence, and her lighthearted bawdy double entendres.”

Should Central City create its own Walk of Fame, it might consider using a photo of Mae West uttering her iconic line, “Why don’t you come up and see me sometime?”

Three indoor trees for the holidays

Add a small-scale living evergreen to your holiday celebrations. Consider one that is suitable for growing indoors so you can enjoy it throughout the year.

The Lemon Cypress makes a great miniature holiday tree, centerpiece, or gift for a friend. The fragrant chartreuse foliage of this dwarf evergreen continues to brighten your winter décor long after the holidays are over. You can find them as topiaries or in their more natural pyramidal form.

Grow them in a sunny window and turn the plants occasionally to ensure all parts receive equal sunlight and grow evenly. You’ll have the best results if you keep your plant in a cool location free of cold and hot air drafts.

Water your mini holiday tree whenever the top few inches of soil are dry. Wait until spring when plants begin to actively grow and need a nutrient boost before applying fertilizer.

The Norfolk Island pine has long been a favorite of indoor gardeners. Its pinelike appearance makes it a great holiday tree. Add a bit of garland and a few small ornaments for a festive

effect.

Grow this plant in a cool, well-lit location free of drafts of hot and cold air. Avoid dry air and soil to keep the needles and branches green, flexible, and healthy. Water thoroughly whenever the soil is just slightly moist. Boost the humidity around this and other plants with a gravel tray. Place pebbles and water in the saucer. Set the pot on the pebbles above the water.

As the water evaporates, it increases the humidity around the plant.

Switch out the ornaments when celebrating other holidays. Use hearts for Valentine’s Day, eggs for Easter and orange lights for Halloween.

Rosemary wreath and tree topiaries are festive as well as fragrant and edible. Give the leaves a pet to enjoy the fragrance and lift your spirits. Or pluck a sprig to add welcome flavor to your winter meals and beverages.

Rosemary was as popular a Christmas plant as mistletoe and holly until the 20th Century. It’s not clear why this plant fell out of favor, but it is growing in popularity as a holiday plant.

You can find it in many garden centers and florists

this time of year.

Rosemary represents love and remembrance, a great sentiment to share during the holidays. Growing Rosemary indoors can be challenging. Don’t let past failures stop you from trying.

Just keep experimenting until you find the location and maintenance routine that keeps your Rosemary thriving. If the plant turns brown, move it out of sight to the back of your indoor garden. It still smells good when you give it a pet and no one, but you will know.

Change things up this season with the addition of one or more of these indoor evergreen trees. They are sure to brighten your spirits and holiday décor.

dinner that evening at a wonderful restaurant in Chinatown, then walked around and found a café to enjoy some coffee and do some catching up. I told him about Poets House and why I was in the city. He thought he could hook me up with a poetry reading that weekend that was being arranged by a friend of his. Then we talked about several television series, particularly Deadwood and The Sopranos. It was fun to discuss how Deadwood was almost Shakespearean in its dialogue.

Bob was close friends with actor Dominic Chianese, who played Uncle Junior in The Sopranos, and who was himself a singer in the Village for many years. This helped Bob land the gig at the “wrap party” when the series came to an end. Bob was the entertainment for cast and crew members as they bid farewell to each other. He related to me how strange and exciting it was to look out from the stage and see all those familiar faces of gangsters and thugs that he had watched over the years on HBO. When I returned to the Gilpin County Library, I was full of great ideas for poetry activities. One idea was to start an “artist-in-residence” program, with the first award going to a “poet-in-residence.” Again, the Friends of the Library came through with funding and we selected Gilpin County poet Chris Weeber as our first artist. She offered a series of poetry writing and appreciation workshops. (In subsequent years we had visual artists-in-residence, craft people of various kinds, and

musicians-in-residence.) One artistin-residence series was the basis for the library winning the national 2010 EBSCO Excellence in Small and/or Rural Public Library Service Award.

Then began the poetry readings of local poets and always featuring one distinguished poet from outside Gilpin County. We offered two or three readings a year, which were well attended and always included an “open-mic” opportunity for anyone who wanted to read one or more poems. Attending the “Poetry in the Branches” conference at Poets House paid off big-time in original programming at the library.

As for Bob Hass, I kept in touch with him by email. His three-year term as the U.S. Poet Laureate was just the beginning. He won the 2007 National Book Award and shared the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for the collection Time and Materials: Poems 1997-2005. In 2014 he was awarded the Wallace Stevens Award from the Academy of American Poets. Bob Horan embarked on a long career of performing for residents of nursing homes through a non-profit program, Joy Through Art, and later leant the magical power of his voice to Music That Heals, another non-profit which provides musical entertainment for sick and abused children. And as for Bob Dylan, we all know he went from “the window of that crummy hotel over Washington Square” to winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016. Those were my three “Bobs.”

EAGLES VICTORIOUS OVER THE SOUTH PARK BURROS 28-24

The Gilpin Eagles won their 3rd game of the season on Thursday, December 2nd in a home nonconference game against the South Park (Fairplay, CO) Burros by a score of 28-24. Again, the Eagles defense displayed improvement, this time holding the Burros to single digits in all four quarters.

The leading scorers with nine points each were Trey Lindberg #3 and Jimmy Immordino #12 who, according to Coach Boulter, is becoming a force under the basket. Lane Willis #33 led the team in total rebounds with five.

BLACK HAWK POLICE DEPARTMENT - On 11/22/2021 at approximately 0810 hours, Sergeant Encinias took a lost property report which occurred at the Ameristar Casino. It was later determined the cell phone was stolen. A suspect has been identified and was issued a municipal summons for theft.

The cellphone was booked into evidence.

- On 11/22/21 Officer Adler responded to the Ameristar Casino (111 Richman Street), for found property. Report taken.

- On 11/22/21, Officer Adler responded to a vehicle break-in at the Monarch parking garage (488 Main Street). Report taken.

- On 11-22-2021, at approximately 2301 hours, Officers responded to 101 Main Street, the Saratoga Casino, on a report of suspicious activity in the parking garage. An unidentified male was checking car door handles.

- On 11/23/21 officers responded to the Ameristar Casino regarding a phone theft. The phone was recovered, and the suspect was issued a municipal summons.

- On 11/23/21, Officer Adler responded to the Isle parking garage (401 Main Street), for a disturbance.

Upon investigation, one party was taken into custody and transported to the Gilpin County Jail.

- On 11/23/2021, at approximately 1400 hours, Black Hawk police officers responded to the Isle Casino, 401 Main Street on the report of found drugs. Upon arrival, officers identified a suspect as the owner of the backpack the drugs were found in.

He claimed the drugs were planted there by someone who stole $3,000 from his

backpack. The backpack was collected as abandoned property - On 11/16/2021 from a hotel room when the occupant did not check out in time due to being transported to the hospital. He admitted to partying with unknown subjects just prior to going to the hospital but could not provide any information on who he was with. A report for the missing cash was taken and the drugs were collected for destruction.

- On 11/23/21, Officer Adler responded to the Sasquatch Casino (125 Gregory Street), for a stolen cellular phone. Report taken.

- On November 23, 2021, Officer Geerdes located a male with multiple warrants at the Ameristar Casino, 111 Richman St. The male was arrested and found to have suspected methamphetamine on his person. For medical reasons, the male was transported to the hospital where he was admitted.

- On Wednesday, 11/24/2021, while scanning the police radio, Colorado State Trooper, 1E6, Hernandez, ran Colorado license plate #QIS-402, northbound on Hwy I-119.

The vehicle came back stolen.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested for Felony Motor Vehicle Theft.

- On November 24, 2021, Officer Geerdes was dispatched to a damaged and malfunctioning bill validator caused by suspected tobacco at the Lodge Casino, 240 Main St. A male was issued a municipal summons for damage to property for spitting a foreign substance into the slot machine.

- On 11/25/21, at approximately 0125 hours, a theft report was taken at the Ameristar Casino. A suspect

has been identified; case remains open.

- On 11-25-2021 officer responded to a report at the Ameristar Casino of an intoxicated party refusing to leave. The subject was eventually transported to the hospital for a welfare placement.

- On 11/25/2021, the Black Hawk Police Department responded to a report of the theft of a catalytic converter theft that occurred at the Monarch Casino on November 24. A suspect has been identified via surveillance video.

- On 11/26/2021, Officer Atencio responded to the Dakota Parking Lot located at 245 Main Street for a traffic crash. A driver was cited.

- On 11/25/2021, Officers responded to the Monarch Casino on the report of a physical disturbance. A male party was arrested for assault and transported to jail.

- On 11/25/2021, a case number was taken for a possible stolen vehicle at the Monarch Casino (488 Main St) and the vehicle was ultimately located onsite. The case number pulled for this incident was canceled.

- On 11/26/2021, Black Hawk Police Officer Brobbey responded to Ameristar Casino’s parking garage level 5 on a vehicle trespass report.

The suspects were seen leaving the parking garage in a 2018 silver Nissan Frontier bearing Colorado License plate number CDY643. The case remains active.

- On 11/27/2021, at about 0745 hours, BHPD Officers were dispatched to the Lady Luck Casino on a report of a counterfeit $100 bill. Officers completed their investigation and cleared on a report. No arrests were made in this case.

- On 11/28/2021, at approximately 2307 hours, officers responded to the Ameristar Hotel for a reported disturbance, suspect was arrested for Domestic Violence related charges.
