MIRI ISAACS
I know it’s Purim and all, but this guy standing at my door asking for a handout - I have this niggling suspicion that he isn’t even Jewish. His yarmulke is askew, it sits uncomfortably on his head. The way he pronounces the requisite “Tzedakah!” is wrong, no matter which dialect he is using, which yiddishe sect he might belong to. Altogether he comes across as an imposter. Yet I give him my donation as I’ve been doing all day long.
Then, when I have a quiet moment to talk to Hashem, I use that imposter’s donation as a plea bargain. “Hashem, I know I may not be worthy of all the good things I am asking You for. But just as I gave to all who knocked on my door this Purim, I am told that You give to all who knock on Your door on this auspicious day!”
The Ritv”a gives an explanation regarding the giving to the poor on Purim. There is a Halacha in Shulchan Aruch that on this auspicious day of Purim; יד הפושט כל לו נותנים .On this day we are obligated to give tzedaka to anyone who extends his hand for a donation, no questions asked, without verifying whether they are indeed poor, and truly in need of our funds.
The Chasam Sofer adds that just as we help anyone who extends their hand on Purim without checking if they are worthy, so too, Hashem will answer the prayers of all who beseech Him on this special day; כל הפושט יד נותנים לו propitious this On. day, we do not have to be deserving of His blessings; He will give to all indiscriminately.
In that case, find those singular moments, dispersed throughout this overwhelmingly hectic day, to say a kapitel Tehillim, to daven for someone in need, to ask for your own yeshuah, to beseech Hashem for the geulah… Now’s our chance!
