BURSTING AT THE SEAMS: Thousands of people will flock to this year’s Wimmera Machinery Field Days to inspect the latest and greatest products for running a modern farm business.

Capacity Wimmera Field Days T

By Field Days president Andrew Bell

he Wimmera has suffered through a very dry spring and summer and it’s fair to say that not everyone has had a prosperous season.

Although grain prices have been historically high, many grain farmers were not blessed with high-yielding crops. Some districts received the double whammy and achieved high yields with high prices but these districts were certainly in the minority.

Soon another season will challenge us and before long farmers will be making important decisions reAndrew Bell garding fertiliser, chemical and machinery purchases. We can proudly boast that the Wimmera Machinery Field Days is the first major field days of the year therefore is spectacularly situated to provide an ideal three days to investigate all possible options for running farm busi-

nesses. The beauty of our event is that there is genuinely something for everyone who attends. All the major machinery dealers will be vying for your attention and there is also the opportunity to investigate all the makes of cars, utes, boats and caravans for the family business and holidays. This year the exhibitors have filled the site to capacity. I thank all exhibitors for attending this year and showing faith in our organisation. The organising committee is very aware that exhibitors are the backbone

of our event and without their commitment the Field Days would not be successful. I thank all the community groups that assist us in running this event. Many of the important jobs are carried out by volunteers of sporting and other clubs to aid in raising money for their own groups, and to ensure the three-day event runs smoothly. A big thank-you to our corporate sponsors and supporters whom without we couldn’t run this event. Lastly, I thank the dedicated members of the committee and staff for

their many hours of work to make sure this event runs smoothly and is well organised. A big thank-you also to the extended Field Days family of wives, husbands, partners and children who are very supportive of the long days and nights of working bees and meetings that are need to achieve this region-defining event. I welcome everyone to the Wimmera Machinery Field Days – I hope everyone has an enjoyable and memorable visit, a safe trip home and prosperous season ahead.

Exhibition reflects rural confidence By DEAN LAWSON

‘C

onfidence’ is set to be the catchcry of the 51st Wimmera Machinery Field Days at Longerenong next week.

Confidence in the future, confidence in agriculture and confidence in an iconic Wimmera event – all are blossoming as rural Australia rekindles its long association with economic prosperity. Having shown resilience to

get through one of the longest droughts on record and then working through floods, the Wimmera community is primed to embrace the future with a new sense of selfbelief. The Field Days, at Wimmera Events Centre on Tuesday, Wednesday and next Thursday, is set to reflect this buoyant attitude and is ‘bulging at the seams’ with exhibitors in anticipation of huge crowds.

Field Days manager Murray Wilson said 126 new companies had made the decision to bring their business to the event this year. “The event is simply growing all the time and success is generating success,” he said. The Field Days has long enjoyed a reputation as a showcase of all that’s new in agricultural farm technology and international as well as Australian firms have been queuing up to be part of the

occasion. Firms from Singapore, the United States and New Zealand will be among firms displaying their products this year.” Mr Wilson said he expected up to 700 exhibitors to fill more than 1000 sites next week. “There is so much demand for sites. For example, in the last few years the Field Days committee has had to extend our agribusiness marquee because of the overflow from

the Alan Heard Pavilion. The marquee has grown by 20, 30 and now 35 metres, simply to cater for purely agribusiness companies,” he said. “What this tells us is that agriculture is big business and that big business wants to come, and is coming to the Wimmera and the biggest broadacre-focused field days in Australia.”

GROWTH: Field days manager Murray Wilson says the event continues to grow.

We invite you to visit us in the Moore Exhibition Centre at the Wimmera Machinery Field Days With over 50 years of local experience, specialising in Heavy Transport, Contractors, Farm & Crop we have the answers to all your general insurance requirements. Contact Steve, Don or Anthony at

R

adio station 3WM will continue its long and colourful relationship with the Wimmera Machinery Fields with live crosses and interviews from the iconic agricultural event next week. The occasion represents the perfect opportunity for the Wimmera-Mallee public to put a face to the ‘voice of the region’ Don Plenty. Don, well-known across the region for his insightful quips and questions during his music programs and also providing master-of-ceremony services for many regional events, will form the backbone of the Field Days broadcast. Mixx FM Horsham and 3WM program manager Emma Elsom said the station had a strong commitment to the region and that meant a strong commitment to one of the region’s biggest and most successful annual events. “The Wimmera Machinery Field Days is an iconic regional attraction and everyone vaguely associated with rural life in the Wimmera-Mallee wants to know what’s happening at Longerenong in that first week of March,” she said. “Who’s there, what’s there and what’s happening? That’s what we’re keen to explore and to pass on the message to our dedicated listeners. “And of course, what better person to mingle and engage with exhibitors,

Motoring enthusiasts will have a chance to experience the power of V8 supercars at this year’s Wimmera Machinery Field Days – without any chance of crashing or injury. A V8 Supercar Simulator will be at the Field Days, giving people a chance to experience the thrill of motor racing. The simulator has room for up to 11 people and includes big-screen and surround sound, G-force experiences and vibration and a perception of acceleration and braking. Many people who have gone in the Supercar Simulator describe the experience ‘as close to the real thing as you can get’.

Celebrity chef is back again

C

elebrity television chef and food author Janelle Bloom will again provide culinary inspiration for Wimmera Machinery Field Days patrons.

Bloom, a huge success at the Field Days last year, will again lead cooking shows in the Field Days Auditorium and discuss the fine art of quality food preparation with enthusiasts in the Country Gourmet Pavilion each day. Field Days manager Murray Wilson said Bloom was well known across Australia and it was exciting for the event to be able to host such a popular chef and successful cookbook author. “Janelle is one of the original chefs who have inspired viewers every day on the high-rating Ready Steady Cook television show, now in its eighth year on air. We are looking forward to her bringing that energy and enthusiasm to the Field Days this year,” Mr Wilson said. Jetset Travel Horsham is sponsoring Bloom’s Field Days visit and as a special Field Days bonus Bloom and the Field Days will give away two copies of her bestselling cook book My Favourite Food for All Seasons to INSPIRATIONAL: Celebrity chef and food author Janelle Bloom will be at the Field Days again this year to provide culinary inspiration to patrons. lucky people in the audience at each of her “I love these kinds of picking up some new recipes cooking demonstrations. shows.” Bloom said. as well,” she said. An understanding of diversity in rural society has led the Wimmera Machinery Field Days to explore major lifestyle and regional showcase exhibitions. As a result, a Country Lifestyle Square, featuring a 1000-metre square marquee, will be a hub of colour, excitement, bargains and shopping. Field Days manager Murray Wilson agreed that the Country Lifestyle Square would have definite ‘market’ feel as patrons

soaked up the many products and bargains on offer. “It’s massive. It will be the centre of a lot of life, colour and fashion,” he said. “It offers a unique shopping experience where there will be plenty of hands-on demonstrations. It’s also a great place to have a breather.” A Country Gourmet Pavilion will also be bursting with all flavours and produce imaginable. “Exhibitors in the Country

Gourmet Pavilion are at record numbers since its inception in 2009,” Mr Wilson said. “There is regional wine, food, boutique beer, gourmet cakes and produce – a true crosssection of the tastes of rural life. “It’s the place to explore culinary indulgences and is appropriately right next door to the Field Days Auditorium where Jane Bloom will be leading her celebrity chef cooking shows and demonstrations.”

Fishing secrets revealed

S

o just how does a lure retrieved by an angling enthusiast entice a fish to strike?

Should the lure dip, dive, wiggle or float on the surface to get the best results? And what about colours? The Australian Travelling Fishing Show or ‘Super Tank’ will again make its appearance at the Wimmera Machinery Field Days and help provide some of the answers. During Super Tank shows operator Michael Cooke uses a spectacular 15-metre long and three-metre high fish tank to show how ‘performing’ barramundi fish respond to various lures. The show features several demonstrations throughout each day of the Field Days, providing curious onlookers with entertainment as well as information about recreational fishing and conservation. Mr Cooke will also demonstrate how the many different types of lures on the market today work to attract fish and throw in a few techniques used by the best anglers. New exhibitor Aquayak is sponsoring the appearance of the Super Tank at this year’s Field Days.

Recognition of livestock

Recognition of livestock in the regional farming landscape has prompted Wimmera Machinery Field Days organisers to set aside a specialist area for this aspect of the farming industry. The Field Days Livestock Block next week will be home to some of the region’s best stud sheep and even the versatile alpacas. Of particular interest will be professionally reared and trained working dogs which will be involved in demonstrations on each day of the event. Of course industry experts will be on hand to provide information and advice on livestock-handling equipment, animal health and management and professional breeding.

The Wimmera Machinery Field Days provides an opportunity for patrons to explore opportunities to either ‘get away from it all’ or ‘have some fun’ with its Boating, Camping and Caravans display. As much an outdoor expo as a display area, this part of the Wimmera Events Centre site during the Field Days is all about pursuing outdoor adventures. The best boating equipment on the market, caravans and trailers, off-road vehicles as well as holiday packages and recreation gear will all be on display.

Two years on and still going strong Horsham ‘yes’ Optus at Site K11-12

F

ranchisee Mick Dempster has telecommunications running in his blood; he has worked with farmers and their telecommunications in Wimmera Mallee for 14 years. In April 2011 he and his wife Cheree opened the ‘yes’ Optus Shop in Firebrace street in Horsham after recognising a huge gap in the region’s telecommunication services. The gap in the market was simply ‘choice’. Two years on and Mick and Cheree are delighted they took the ‘big plunge’ and opened a store to provide the Horsham district community with a choice in telecommunications. They said support had been amazing. They had a great response from existing Optus customers and established a large new customer base with their shop-front presence in Horsham. They added that there was a strong feeling that the community had been relieved to now have choice in telecommunications and somewhere to come and take advantage of face-to-face personalised service and relevant local advice. At last there was a serious alternative in telecommunications in Horsham district, which hadn’t been available until now.

HERE TO HELP: The staff at Horsham ‘yes’ Optus pride themselves on their after-sales service and the viable telecommunications option that they can offer with Optus’ expanded mobile and wireless broadband network.

Ultimately, Horsham ‘yes’ Optus specialises telecommunications, and that’s the difference.

in

In the years past Optus’ coverage struggled to keep regional people connected. But in the past two years, Optus has continued to invest in expanding its mobile and wireless broadband network to reach more people. Coverage has especially improved in the Wimmera-Mallee with 30 new towers now operating across the region.

Notice the difference “If you were an Optus customer quite a few years ago and were not happy with the coverage back then, it would be worth taking another look,” Mick said. “There is no real risk for the customer with Optus’ coveragesatisfaction guarantee. “A lot of our customers have come from word of mouth from friends and family of people who have made the switch to Optus and are extremely happy with the coverage experience and the service they have received in store” “Overall feedback from customers has been really good, not

just mobile customers but also wireless broadband and fixed lines services. “Although mobile phones are a very important part of the business, it’s not just mobiles that we do. We stock a large range of accessories, which we are becoming well known for including Bluetooth accessories, car kits and external antennas. Horsham ‘yes’ Optus will have a dedicated tent for accessories, including great deals, at the Field Days. “When we opened we wanted to provide a real point of difference. It may sound cliché but to us, the customer really does come first,” Cheree said. “We believe a customer’s time is important and do not want to keep them waiting. We are dedicated to providing our customers with the best assistance and support, not just on the day they buy their new phone, but continue to provide ongoing support afterwards whenever they need it. “This support and advice is free to customers who purchase from our store. When you come in and buy a phone with us in store, we pride ourselves in the fact that you don’t go home with a sim card in a packet and a mobile phone in a box. We ensure

that before you leave your mobile is activated, treasured contacts and pictures are transferred over from your old phone, accounts are set up if needed. Basically you walk out working, which is how it should be. “The main point of difference with our store is that the people who own the store work in the store. Telecommunications, although an extremely important part of our lives, shouldn’t be something you have to worry about or spend a lot of time on. It should be seamless.” “During the Field Days our team will be on hand to answer all your telecommunication questions. Our purpose-built site will have all the latest Smartphones and tablets available for you to try. Optus will also have a ‘red hot’ special deal for field days patrons. We will also offer a seven-day network trial at the event, whereby people can borrow a dual-band mobile handset. It’s just another good reason to make your way over to our site and have a chat with your ‘yes’ Optus team. Terms and conditions will be available either in store at 49 Firebrace Street or at the field days site K11-12.

Art competition overhaul

T

he Wimmera Machinery Field Days team has overhauled its popular farm sculpture competition with prizes and incentives for people to create that rural art with a difference.

The field days have featured the sculpture competition since 2006 which has led to a variety of unusual and clever creations. The competition has provided an opportunity for creative people to use their imagination by using common materials found on the farm to create a piece of artwork that could win them prizes. Wimmera Machinery Field Days manager Murray Wilson said changes and improvements would bring fresh ideas, provide incentive for a wider range of entries and to rebrand it as the Victorian Farm Sculpture Competition. He said the changes gave the Field Days the chance to offer creative people, novices or professionals, a chance at becoming the farm sculpture state champion. “One of the most exciting aspects of the new and improved Farm Sculpture Competition is the partnership that has been formed with another key regional event, the Spirit of the Land Festival held in Lockhart NSW,” Mr Wilson said.

CREATIVE: ‘Mozzie’, a previous winning sculpture by Graham Gellatly of Lubeck. Picture: CONTRIBUTED.

“We are really pleased to have formed a relationship with this festival. Their main drawcard is the National Farm Sculpture awards where first prize is an incredible $10,000. “ As hosts of the Victorian competition we wanted to offer our winner a chance to compete in national titles. Therefore we are pleased to offer as part of our first prize, travel and accommodation for the Victorian

Farm Sculpture winner to take their winning sculpture to Lockhart NSW and compete for the major National Farm Sculpture awards in October each year. “ Mr Wilson said the Spirit of the Land Festival was a fantastic event and had generated incredible farm sculptures from across the country, many of which were on permanent display in Lockhart district. “We are also talking with the festival committee about having some of their previous year’s national-winning sculptures on display at the Wimmera Field Days this year to further complement the new Victorian Farm Sculpture competition for 2013.” The 2013 Victorian Farm Sculpture competition offers $5000 in prizemoney with the winner taking home $2500 and travel and accommodation to Lockhart NSW to compete in the Spirit of the Land Festival Agritech Rural has returned as the major sponsor and director Daryl McCrae said his organisation was proud to continue its long association. He said Agritech Rural was also excited to be part of the new and improved Victorian Farm Sculpture Competition. All sculptures will be on display at the Wimmera Machinery Field Days.

Everyone who enters the Field Days this year will get an entry form which they can drop into a barrel in the event’s Country Gourmet Pavilion. The promotion provides everyone who enters

a chance to find out more about the Grampians Grape Escape Festival as well as spend time in the Field Days Country Gourmet Pavilion. But the good news doesn’t end there for Field Days patrons. New exhibitor Aquayak has come on board this year as key sponsor of the popular Aussie Supertank Fishing Show at the Field Days and as part of the sponsorship will offer a new kayak as a gate prize. Again, all patrons through the gate will get an entry form which they can take to the Aquayak Supertank site to drop in a barrel for a chance to win.

DAILY SHOWS: Horsham College’s College Collection fashion parade will be from 2pm to 3pm each day in the Field Days Auditorium.

DEMOS AND DISPLAYS : Wimmera Machinery Field Days 2013

Presenter rekindles links to Wimmera

P

opular television news presenter Jane Bunn will again be among special guests at the Wimmera Machinery Field Days on Tuesday.

The WIN News weather expert, a qualified meteorologist, is no stranger to the Wimmera, having led various forums as well as being part of last year’s Field Days. Bunn is renowned for her ability to provide insight into weather based on a rural perspective and said she was looking forward to again mingling with the farming community which is so dependent on and vulnerable to weather. “It’s great to be back in the Wimmera supporting the Field Days again and I am looking forward to meeting everyone and talking about the weather,” she said. “I really enjoy the opportunities to be able to give people an insight into finding out more about the weather because it can affect what we do on a daily basis, especially for farm-

ers. So it is always better to have a good understanding of what is coming our way.” In a first for the Wimmera Machinery Field Days, WIN News will present the weather for regional Victoria from the Field Days site. Field Days manager Murray Wilson said the opportunity to have a television presentation across western Victoria was ‘too good to pass up.’ “Along with having Jane here as our special guest and meeting all our Field Days patrons we will also be seen across regional Victoria and parts of NSW and SA on the evening television news. This is just sensational and a great boost for the Field Days and promotional opportunity for the Wimmera,” he said. Bunn’s topic for her presentations at the Field Days will be ‘understanding the weather’.

March 5, 6 & 7

Help fight cancer with close shave

Field Days visitors wanting to change their look or just looking to help a good cause can achieve both ambitions. Global company Bayer will support the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave while promoting fungicidal seed treatment EverGol Prime at the Wimmera Machinery Field Days. Bayer wants visitors to its site to be brave and shave and raise money to fight blood cancer. The World’s Greatest Shave raises about half the money the

Leukaemia Foundation needs to fund its work. Bayer, which has a site in the Alan Heard Pavilion, will also have a celebrity shave each day in the Field Days Auditorium. The shave will involve key supporters and regional personalities. Bayer’s EverGol Prime aims to set the new standard in fungicidal protection in wheat and barley and as well as controlling smut and bunt diseases, it fights the root disease Rhizoctonia solani.

COME RAIN OR SHINE: Meteorologist and television weather presenter Jane Bunn will lead weather presentations at this year’s Field Days.

Elders and Emmett’s are hosting the presentations which will explore how rain develops from moisture and meteorological instability. Bunn will look at where each of these come from and how we know when they are coming. Other topics she will discuss include how to understand weather forecasts and what to

look for and what resources are available for the best weather information in the region. Bunn will also briefly meet and greet the public at an ANZ marquee after lunch. Jane Bunn schedule: 10am, Elders marquee, site K 1-5; 11.30am, Emmett’s marquee, site A 23-45; 1pm ANZ marquee, site O 1-2.

PLENTY FOR KIDS: Children and families are an integral part of the Wimmera Machinery Field Days and this year organisers have gone all out to provide attractions and activities. The Field Days Square will hum with activity as children get close to nature at an animal farm, hop on the popular Field Days miniature train or explore the air-conditioned Casuarina Kindergarten Parents Tent for pre-schoolers. The picture shows children enjoying train rides at last year’s event.

Wimmera goes on display

A

photographic artist dedicating his image-capturing skills to explore the Wimmera will launch a new angle to his business at next week’s Wimmera Machinery Field Days. Lynton Brown, from Lynton Brown Landscapes and already renowned for his video work, has turned his attention to still photography and is winning a broad fan base for the images he places on his social media Facebook page. Many of the dramatic images he meticulously pursues and captures will be on display and he will take orders for his productions and books at the Field Days. Mr Brown said his photographs were the result of relatively simple and short excursions from Horsham. “What people see in the shots is basically what they have in their own backyards,” he said.

ALL TEETH: A crocodile is part of Black Snake Productions display at this year’s Field Days.

Reptiles are stars T

he Wimmera-Mallee region is home to some of the most deadly snakes in the world.

DRAMATIC: Photographic artist Lynton Brown has a growing fan base for his eye-catching photographs of Wimmera landscapes.

“We’re blessed with an amazing landscape which is providing an endless supply of material.

“One view can change dramatically over a 24-hour period and provide a kaleidoscope of colours and light.”

Cover is the big difference

Under-cover pavilions set the Wimmera Machinery Field Days apart from many other agricultural events across the country. The Moore Exhibition Centre at Wimmera Events Centre at Longerenong is an obvious example and during the Field Days becomes home to an eclectic collection of exhibitors.

The centre is at capacity for next week’s three-day event. Exhibitors range from education and employment providers to financial and government service industries and household and industrial businesses. The unusually shaped Alan Heard Pavilion is also a popular under-cover exhibition centre and

a key place where vistors can find just about everything involving agri-business. Leading agricultural companies and rural industry representatives are occupying more than 70 sites in the Alan Heard Pavilion where they will provide information on agricultural technology and professional advice.

People keen to get a taste of Mr Brown’s work can look his page up on Facebook.

COVER: Covered pavilions set the Field Days apart.

Patrons at this year’s Wimmera Machinery Field Days have an opportunity to find out more about these curious reptiles when Black Snake Productions presents its daily show, which stars an array of snakes. But the show involves more than just snakes. There is also a crocodile, lizards of various sizes and big friendly snakes that don’t mind being handled. There will also be turtles, frogs and other creatures as experienced and highly professional handlers take crowds through an environmental journey as they explain what makes these animals tick. The demonstrations at site J19 are likely to attract spectators young and old and cover issues ranging from handling wild animals to snake-bite advice.
