Businessman wants population analysis

A

Wimmera businessman who helped establish a blossoming community banking system will use an awards night in Avoca this week to stress a need for ‘a serious’ analysis of Australian population distribution.

Wimmera Grain Company director David Matthews of Rupanyup said as guest speaker at Grampians-Pyrenees Business Achievement Awards he would ‘touch on’ what he considered a significant issue.

“We hear a lot about Australia’s population size but don’t hear enough about population distribution,” Mr Matthews said.

“We have a large country yet the largest concentrations of people are cramming into relatively small spaces in our capital cities.

“We can all see the strain this is placing on our cities.”

Mr Matthews said news bulletins were constantly leading off with stories about the engineering and infrastructure challenges and frustrations involved in dealing with an urban sprawl.

“Governments can’t keep up with the strains of cities growing the way they are,” Mr Matthews said.

“Yet, I would suggest we could add an

“There are towns all over Australia with the capacity to take more people. Yet we’re fostering a society that concentrates more and more people in our major cities.

“Governments have an important role to play in setting policies that ultimately determine where the population lives.”

Mr Matthews said he would base his main speech at the awards on Friday night about his experiences living in a small regional community and trying to address challenges of a declining population.

“It will be about how we set up Wimmera Grain Company to add value to the product and how we developed skills to do that,” he said.

Mr Matthews will also outline about how a willingness to maintain business and retain capital in Rupanyup and Minyip led to Bendigo Bank’s community banking model.

There are now 300 community bank branches across the country and Mr Matthews is a Bendigo Bank board member and co-chairman of the Community Bank Strategic Advisory Board.

Rally is chance to sway voters

andidates for Mallee will have a final chance to sway public opinion in the southern part of the electorate at a Mallee Rally debate in Horsham on Monday night

The debate, organised by Wimmera Press Club and Wimmera Development Association, will be at Wesley Performing Arts Centre, less than a week before the September 7 federal poll.

Victorian Farmers Federation policy adviser and former Weekly Times journalist Peter Hunt will host the event and organisers expect a large crowd.

A record 12 candidates, including 11 party representatives and an independent, will contest the vacant seat, held by longtime incumbent John Forrest who has retired.

Most of the candidates will attend the rally, the first of its kind in the Wimmera.

Organisers have called for people to email Wimmera Development Association executive director Jo Bourke at jbourke@wda.org.au to pose questions to the candidates.

Only three members of parliament have represented Mallee since the seat’s inception in the late 1940s.

Wimmera sporting organisation that has consistently attracted international recognition will celebrate its 50th anniversary in Horsham on Saturday night.

Wimmera Soaring Club, now Horsham Flying Club, will present a celebration dinner at White Hart Hotel from 7.30pm.

Max Hedt will join fellow soaring club foundation member Steve McFarlane, in sharing historical anecdotes with guests during the night.

Wimmera Soaring Club merged with Wimmera Sports Aircraft Association about to form Horsham Flying Club about 10 years.

The soaring club started from humble beginnings in 1963 and its first glider, an English-built T-31, is now on display at a gliding museum at Point Cook.

Horsham Week

The club established an international reputation in the sport of cross-country gliding, which involves pilots chasing rising hot air of thermals over vast distances, with its annual Horsham Week competition, in its 46th year.

The event attracted a fleet of 72 gliders during its halcyon days in the 1970s, piloted by state, national and international champions.

Despite a wane in interest in the sport, Horsham Week still manages attract 30 aircraft and pilots.

Horsham Week has run annually without fail since its inception and has been such a key part of the national gliding calendar that the Gliding Federation of Australia established an annual Horsham coaching week as a lead-up each February.

Mr Hedt said the club had a peak membership of about 45, which was now about 33 with only a handful of gliding members.

“Four blokes basically came together and called a meeting in 1963 to see if they could rekindle interest in a gliding club,” Mr Hedt said.

“There had previously been one in the later 1930s,” he said.

“The first flights were from Robin Keith’s property at Natimuk Road using Jim Molyneaux’s Tiger Moth as a tug.

“We then flew from several other paddocks until firmly establishing a base at Jim’s property.

“In 1967 we gained permission to move onto what was then the new Horsham aerodrome.”

Mr Hedt reflected how he became interested in gliding after gaining an interest in flying as a child started with Tiger Moth aircraft in 1959.

“Gliding is totally different to powered flight which I describe as boring holes in the sky,” he said.

“With gliding you are always thinking, calculating and planning ahead.”

Vandals receive warning

Police have warned vandals continually damaging a recreation vehicle waste-dump site at Dimboola that they face charges if caught.

Sergeant Ken McLean said vandals could also expect to pay for repairs.

“Police intend to keep an eye on the area,” he said.

Hindmarsh Shire Council chief executive Tony Doyle urged people to think about their actions before dropping rocks into the dump point.

Mr Doyle said contractors had to clear the Wimmera Street dump point of rocks on more than six occasions.

Rocks dropped into the dump point had blocked pipes causing waste to build up and leaving the dump point unusable and inconveniencing travellers.

“These acts of vandalism are very disappointing. Apart from the cost involved to clear the pipes by contractors or council staff, the inconvenience to travellers is one of the most disappointing aspects,” he said.

“Because the council has a major program underway to attract more visitors to the towns within our shire, the provision of amenities such as the public RV dump point in Dimboola is crucial infrastructure that helps attract visitors.

“Apart from the cost to the council to continually repair the damage, monitoring the facility is a waste of police resources.”

It’s not a new fire levy, it’s a fairer fire levy.

On 1 July 2013, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission, the Victorian Government is replacing the old fire services levy with a fairer system.

Rather than being added to insurance premiums, the levy will now be collected with council rates. This means all property owners contribute a fair share to the Country Fire Authority or the Metropolitan Fire Brigade.

The levy is a fixed charge of $100 for residential properties and $200 for non-residential properties, plus a variable charge based on the property’s capital improved value.

All funds will go towards supporting Victoria’s fire services.

GST and stamp duty charged on the old levy have been removed and, for the first time, eligible pensioners and veterans will receive a $50 concession. These reforms will save households and business around $100 million a year.

immera Grain Company director David Matthews has given us all a betweenthe-eyes reminder that there is a mighty need for political will to explore a redistribution of our national population.

Mr Matthews has made a simple observation – there are too many people in our capital cities and not enough everywhere else.

It’s true. While buildings and other assets sit relatively idle in many regional centres we can almost hear the collective groan coming from our capital cities from the sheer weight of people.

It is little wonder that when news breaks about a pressing need or calls or plans for more government investment into metropolitan infrastructure that many of us start to question longterm direction.

Population growth has always been an economic stimulus whether at local, regional, state or national levels. We only have to consider what the gold rush meant for Ballarat, Bendigo, Stawell and Ararat.

Yet when some of us have asked political leaders how they in government propose to increase regional populations while reducing the metropolitan sprawl, it attracts an ambiguous or vague nod, a blank look of disinterest or a tired ‘it’s all about building agriculture and resources’ response.

Surely it’s time for federal and state governments to have a serious look what they can develop or introduce that encourages a dissemination of our people.

An inclination to take on the vastness and explore the promise our great country offers set the foundations for Australian legend and folklore. The truth is we are now heavily urbanised.

Meanwhile, out in the ‘sticks’, we wait for the next ‘gold rush’ and the people it will bring.

While it makes sense to pour money into where most people in the country live, it certainly doesn’t make sense to encourage or ignore the fact that so many people live in each other’s pockets – especially when services and space are available in the regions of a geographically large country.

Mr Matthews is right when he points out the population of rural centres such as Horsham could grow by thousands with little impact on infrastructure. We could also add Ararat and Stawell to his argument.

He is also spot on when he adds that satellite towns Rupanyup or Minyip could double in population without too much of an impost on Treasury. Again, you could throw in Warracknabeal, Nhill, Murtoa, Dimboola, Kaniva, Jeparit and Rainbow.

Engineering students will present some of the metal fabrication projects they have completed and Workco will provide students with an overview of the apprenticeships pathway from VETiS into school-based apprenticeships.

Building and construction students will also lead a guided tour of the construction site of a $14-million Bayer CropScience wheat and oilseed-breeding centre at the college.

Grant helps memorial restoration

The club will restore the Cyril Bingham Brudenell White Memorial as part of the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program.

Member for Wannon Dan Tehan confirmed the funding.

“The Centenary of Anzac will be the most significant national period of commemoration in our nation’s history”, Mr Tehan said.

“I am delighted that funding has been approved for this project in Ararat as submitted by the Ararat Legacy Club.”

“The outstanding service by General Sir Brudenell White to Australia as a soldier in the First World War, as chairman of the Commissioners of the Federal Public Service 1923-27, and Chief of the General Staff and First Member of the Military Board 1940-41, warrants due recognition.

“Restoration of the monument and grave at the Buangor Cemetery will preserve the memorial and save a significant part of our military history, particularly for future generations, as well as present tourism opportunities such as the creation of a Remembrance Trail.”

A Wannon Anzac Centenary Community Grants committee assessed funding applications and made recommendations to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs through Mr Tehan.

“Communities in our electorate can appropriately commemorate the Centenary of Anzac as part of nation-wide commemorations of the Anzac Centenary and the centenary of the First World War,” he said.

“Funding is still available for local projects and I encourage organisations to contact my office if they wish to apply for remaining funding.”

SIR, - Why is your child playing for their chosen football club? Is it because they get to play at least 3 quarters of footy each week and get the opportunity to continue to develop their skills each year.

If they don’t get at least three quarters each week is it because either they or their parents want to be part of a winning club even if it means their child might miss playing many weeks because there are so many other players who also want to play at the same club.

Do they enjoy winning by 20 to 30 goals each week because the opposing club can barely put a side on the ground and most of those players are half their size.

Country football is a big part of our lifestyle and the only way it will continue to flourish is by having a strong competition where all clubs have strong junior program to best develop our children’s sporting ability, and that comes from having teams that push each other each week to bring out the best they are capable of.

It would appear team numbers will not be evened up by mandated rules, and as many families have strong family ties to clubs this could prove difficult to introduce. We must however look at what is best for both our children as individuals and for country football in general and if our child is not getting a game every week we need to make sure this is for their own good and not just so they can be part of a successful team at the expense of their development.

We all want to be part of a winning club and get a trophy or flag to go in the cabinet and that will never change but let us all strive to build a stronger and more competitive country football competition by considering what is really best for our children.

The answer to that is making sure they play sport every week possible in a team that has room for them to play every week.

Our failure to address this issue will see a continuance of lopsided competitions with uneven team numbers and could spell disaster for our local football leagues.

Art and football unite in three-team match

n arts project based on the creation of a new Australian Rules football game involving three teams playing simultaneously will unfold at Dock Lake Reserve, south-east of Horsham on October 5.

The project, the brainchild of Melbourne conceptual artist Gabrielle de Vietri, will feature a game with three sets of goal posts on a circular playing arena and a specific set of rules.

The game will include Wimmera League club Horsham RSL Diggers and Horsham District League’s Noradjuha-Quantong and Taylors Lake. Each club will receive $300 for taking part and the winning team will pocket $1000 de Vietri and community development worker Renae Fo-

miatti, backed by government funding, have worked on the concept with Horsham clubs for the last six months. They have had several community workshops, investigating rules and ways of developing the concept

while maintaining the integrity of the football code.

Their investigations have attracted a mixed response from the football community. Some people have embraced the idea while others have dismissed it

as pointless nonsense.

“This project is about breaking down the traditional binary ideas of conflict,” de Vietri said.

“What happens to competition when you introduce collaboration? In the three-team game, the success of a team will no longer lie solely in the strength of its players. As well as skill, fitness and team-work, players will have to approach the game in a morally strategic and intelligently cooperative way.”

The game will be from 3pm, with pre and post-game festivities, music, food and drink.

Wimmera folk-rock band Kritta will play before the game and commentary will be streamed live from the venue.

Footage of the game and the process will form a documentary video.

Entry to the game is free.

Open gardens will help with transport

Grampians Community Health will raise money for its Community Car Transport Program with open garden day on November 3.

The event will feature five Stawell district gardens.

The Community ‘More Than Just a Car’ program operates on minimal funding through Grampians Community Health.

A team of volunteer drivers helps people get to medical appointments, hospitals for operations, social activities and other events. It is a service for elderly, frail-aged or disabled people.

Two of the gardens involved in the open garden day are Asmara Park and The Briars.

Asmara Park, at 8223 Donald-Stawell Road, Stawell, features hundreds of labelled

roses and irises add perfume and colour to a formal garden that goes onto native plantings blending with surrounding countryside.

The Briars at 19 Robson Rd, Stawell,takes advantage of Grampians views. Shady garden rooms contrast with open areas boasting roses and a parkland of exotic trees.

Youth services receive a boost

M

eagan O’Brien and Sarah Garton have joined a team supporting young people in Ararat and Stawell.

Both are youth project officers with Central Grampians Local Learning and Employment Network with Ms O’Brien based in a High Street office in Ararat and Ms Garton working from Stawell’s Powerhouse building at Cato Lake.

Ms O’Brien has studied and lived in the region and has a background in administration.

She has returned to the area after travelling and working interstate and is eager to embrace her new role working with young people.

“I am looking forward to do-

ing great things for and with the young adults of Ararat,” she said.

Ms Garton has returned to CGLLEN after a five-year stint working in retail in Stawell She said she was eager for the Stawell community to share its ideas of the future for young people in the region.

“I have made some great connections and I hope to showcase all the great things our local young people have to offer our community,” she said.

The pair will work on a regional ‘Engage’ program to connect young people to community through a range of activities.

The program is encouraging young people to take their ideas

to the youth project officers.

Ms O’Brien and Ms Garton will also implement a L2P Learner Driver Mentor program.

L2P allows disadvantaged young drivers to gain their necessary 120 hours of driving experience while on their L-plates.

Volunteer supervising drivers are trained and supported to mentor young people on the road. The CGLLEN team is seeking community members to train as volunteer mentors as well as encouraging young people who think they are eligible to get in contact.

Boating enthusiasts will be able to launch their boats with greater ease when run-off fills popular Natimuk Lake.

Member for Lowan Hugh Delahunty said boaters would benefit from a new boat ramp funded through a State Govern-

ment’s Recreational Fishing Initiative.

Mr Delahunty said the lake had a reputation for outstanding fishing when full but was currently only about one metre deep.

“We took the opportunity, considering the low water level, to provide fund-

ing to the Lake Natimuk Committee of Management for a new boat ramp.

It has been completed on the southern side of the lake,” Mr Delahunty said.

“Natimuk Lake produced excellent fishing for rainbow trout in 2011 and 2012 after the drought broke

Electronic junk has no charge

H

orsham district residents can now dispose of the electronic waste at Horsham Rural City Council transfer stations free of charge.

Under a national Television and Computer Recycling Scheme, people can now drop off televisions and computer equipment for recycling.

Council technical services director John Martin said people could make the most of the service as transfer stations in Kenny Road, Horsham, Quantong, Pimpinio, Mount Zero, Jung and Toolondo during usual operating hours.

“The program also results in more work for Horsham business Axis Worx in collecting the materials, dismantling the products and beginning the recycling process,” he said.

“In addition to being a better use of materials and the knowledge that these products will be recycled in an environmentally friendly way, this program helps reduce the disposal of material into our landfills and in turn increases the life of our landfills.

“Hazardous materials including lead, mercury and zinc will be prevented from entering the local environment and valuable non-renewable resources, including small amounts of gold and other precious metals, will be saved for reuse.”

Mr Martin said a key feature of the scheme was that it provided a long-term solution to the disposal of E-waste, and showcased the successful collaboration between the Australian Government, industry and communities.

he Western and Henty highways and Mortlake-Ararat Road will be the subject major repair work as part of a $170-million State Government roads project.

Member for Lowan Hugh Delahunty said the Western Highway at Horsham and Dimboola would be subject to $1-million in repair and restoration works starting next February.

“One third of vehicles using the Western Highway daily are heavy freight, travelling between Melbourne and Adelaide and Victorian communi-

ties,” Mr Delahunty said.

“This amount of heavy freight over a period of time has put stress on the Western Highway and these repair works will benefit all road users as a result.”

Mr Delahunty said Mortlake-Ararat Road would also benefit from a $1-million investment in works at Maroona, Rossbridge and Lake Bolac.

He said the works program would start early next year be complete before winter months.

“Mortlake-Ararat Road is a key connector in the district, supporting farming communities and rural Victorians,” he said.

Blue Frog is finalist in awards

“These works will provide a long-term benefit to these road users,” he said.

The government will spend almost $2-million on improving the Henty Highway at Hamilton.

“The Henty Highway is a key strategic freight, tourist and commuter routes throughout Victoria’s south-west,” Mr Delahunty said.

“The Henty Highway carries thousands of vehicles a day, travelling through Victoria and beyond into South Australia.

Many of those vehicles are heavy and fully laden with milk, stock, timber and other freight.”

Upgrading highway

VicRoads has called for tenders for a 15.5-kilometre Beaufort to Buangor stage of the Western Highway reconstruction project.

The stage is part of a $505-million Western Highway Ballarat-Stawell dual carriageway upgrade the state and federal governments are funding through a Nation Building Program.

Western Highway Project Director Michael McCarthy said VicRoads was looking forward to talking with organisations keen to take on the construction.

“The duplication of the highway will

be built to current highway standards, which will allow safe overtaking, improve freight efficiency and reduce the risk of head-on and run-off road crashes,” Mr McCarthy said.

“The key features of this new project will include new bridges at Fiery Creek, Middle Creek and Charliecombe Creek, a separated full diamond interchange at Eurambeen-Streatham Road and new roadside rest areas in both directions.”

More than 5500 vehicles travel the highway west of Ballarat each day. Authorities expect the number to double by 2025.

Wimmera Health Care Group’s waste-management Blue Frog program is a state finalist for Victorian Tidy Towns awards.

The program, which aims to reduce the organisation’s waste and carbon foot print won the Horsham’s Resource Recovery and Waste Management title earlier in the year.

The health group’s Environmental Management Working Group developed the program.

Working group chairman and director of finance and corporate services Mark Knights said the state nomination was recognition of the hard work put in by all staff to achieve great results.

“The working group implements the ideas, but it is up to the entire staff to make the decision to do the right thing,” Mr Knights said.

“This nomination is proof that the staff’s hard work is paying off. For instance in less than one year, we reduced the amount of waste collected from the organisation by 20 percent.

“We have also tried to replace nonrecyclable goods with recyclable ones wherever possible and are always calling for more ideas from staff on how we can make more environmentally friendly decisions at Wimmera Health Care Group.”

The Blue Frog Program uses the image of a blue frog as a visual reminder to get staff to make environmentally friendly decision. For example, the Blue Frog can be seen near bins and at light switches.

Officials will announce state winners on October 12.

A

t the Animal Aid Vet Clinic – as at all clinics, I’m sure – we have a number of regular patients who fall into the category of ‘Skinny Old Cats’. Today I saw one of our favourites, a very elderly black and white cat called Maddie.

Maddie has been a patient at our clinic for 10 years or more and for most of that time has been very well.

A year ago, however, when she was 15, her owners brought her in because she had lost a lot of weight.

Her appetite was still fine, if anything she was eating more than normal, but the weight continued to drop off no matter how much they fed her.

She was also getting quite cranky, her coat was dull, and she was drinking a bit more water than previously.

Her owners weren’t sure if this was just her getting old, or whether there was more to worry about.

Many cats will lose weight as they get older, and it can be a normal part of the ageing process for some. For others, however – particularly when there are other symptoms accompanying the weight loss – it can actually be a sign of a disease process going on.

In Maddie’s case, there was enough evidence to make us concerned that she might be unwell, so we ran some blood tests.

Sure enough, Maddie had an overactive thyroid gland.

Metabolism

This condition, known as hyperthyroidism, is one of the most common causes of weight loss and illness in older cats.

The thyroid gland, in simple terms, produces a hormone, which controls the body’s metabolism.

An overactive thyroid therefore increases the cat’s metabolic rate, making them very hungry and yet still prone to lose weight rapidly.

They can also drink more water, and have changes in personality such as crankiness.

Diarrhoea and a very rapid heart rate are also common.

Left untreated, the condition can lead to damage to both the kidneys and the heart.

Luckily for affected cats, with treatment the prognosis is good.

Daily medication is effective for many cats, but other options are also available, such as surgery or radiation treatment.

Once the thyroid hormone levels are under control and maintained that way, most cats will return more or less to normal.

Other common conditions of older cats that can be associated with weight loss include kidney failure or diabetes mellitus.

Cancer, pancreatitis and other gastrointestinal disease, or viral infections such as Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, feline AIDs, can also be causes.

In all of these instances the symptoms will vary depending on the cause but may include: • Excessive thirst, urinating more frequently or in inappropriate places • Changes in appetite, such as loss of appetite or increased hunger • Vomiting or diarrhoea The important thing to remember is that you should always be aware of what is a healthy weight for your cat, but particularly as they get older.

It might even mean that your once-a-year visit to the vet becomes a twice-a-year event, as the onset of age-related diseases can sneak up quickly.

There will also be discussions around new product developments and strategies to avoid or deal with herbicide resistance.

A misfit finds her way

tawell Regional Arts will present the play Everything Must Go at the Stawell Entertainment Centre this Saturday.

The show, directed by threetime Barry Award nominee Damian Callinan and performed by Rachel Leary, is a comedic and poignant portrayal of a misfit finding her way.

Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

The plot, set in Tasmania’s Huon Valley, is based on Nancy Browne who is having a garage sale. ‘There will be treasure like you can’t imagine. Like you really can’t imagine.’

The show explores the mixing of subcultures that occurs as city folk move into rural areas.

Eccentric and reclusive, Nancy Browne has lived in the same house, the same Tasmanian valley all her life, but now the valley is changing — farms are being sold and city people are moving in bringing with them new ideas and new ways.

The farm has been sold to a developer who is going to use to create a suburb ‘Perfect Ponds.’ The wider world has encroached and Nancy has to make sense of it. She also has to move house.

Nancy draws out family stories from the items she is selling

in her garage sale, as well as highlighting her own original take on the world. She tells stories of the valley where she lives, her neighbours and the changes that are taking place.

Critics have described the play as ‘hilarious, ridiculous and touching’ and Nancy as

‘a fabulously unique Australian character.’

Rachel Leary has published and won awards for short fiction and won a commendation in The Age Short Story Competition in 2011.

She has been state finalist and semi-finalist in RAW comedy and has performed in comedy venues across Victoria. She is a professional performer who has also appeared at many national corporate and community events.

Her training includes courses in physical comedy with various internationally reputed teachers as well as with IS Theatre LTD in Tasmania.

In 2008 she completed RMIT’s Professional Writing and Editing Diploma.

Tickets are available at Stawell Library on 5358 1274 for $20 a ticket. Students 16 and under and accompanied by an adult will be admitted free of charge.

Tickets will also be available at the door at $25.

Hospice hosts trip to mansion

Auxiliary president Lea Crammond said the trip was a popular annual fundraiser for the group and encouraged patrons to quickly get their tickets.

Mrs Crammond said the trip would start from Horsham at 7.30am before stopping for a morning tea at Beaufort and arriving

at Werribee Park by 11.30am for a lunch.

The group would leave Werribee Park Mansion by 4.45pm, stop for an evening meal at Ballarat and be back in Horsham by 9pm.

“Werribee Park Mansion is just stunning, the mansion and gardens are beautiful and this bus trip is very popular,” Mrs Crammond said.

“The grounds are gorgeous and the bus trip in itself is a lot of fun, I make sure the

trip is entertaining for everyone.”

Self-managed super grows in popularity

T

he fastest growing sector in the superannuation industry is self-managed superannuation funds, SMSFs. Although membership is limited to a maximum of four people per fund, the most recent quarterly report produced by the Australian Tax Office shows there are more than 503,000 SMSFs, with more than 5700 new funds established in that quarter alone.

So, what makes SMSFs such a popular choice for Australians? Below are some key advantages that can make them an attractive choice as part of your retirement strategy: • Cost savings. SMSF fees are usually fixed whereas retail super funds are charged as a percentage of the account balance. So for example, for accounts over $250,000, it can be more cost effective to establish an SMSF than to use a retail superannuation structure offered by a fund manager.

• Control. With SMSFs, all the members of the fund are also trustees and are therefore responsible for all decisions. They are also required to manage the fund in accordance with relevant superannuation laws.

• Flexibility. Trustees can seek assistance of administrators, accountants and financial planners in maintaining their legal responsibilities in the running of their

fund or they can do it all themselves.

• Investment choice. A much wider range of investments is available to trustees than might otherwise be typically offered by fund managers. This allows maximum flexibility in investment selection, especially for geared investments and nontraditional assets like artwork, bullion and certain types of landholdings.

• Direct property. An SMSF can invest in direct property, whereas retail funds usually cannot. In addition, a business property owned outside superannuation can be transferred into an SMSF. For many self-employed people, having their SMSF own their business premises

can make a lot of financial sense.

• Taxation. SMSFs can allow trustees to take a more tailored approach to managing taxation, especially when it comes to capital gains tax.

• Insurance. SMSFs can hold life, temporary disability and permanent disability insurance on their members. This can be a tax-effective way of managing both the cost of the insurance and any future insurance payouts.

• Estate planning. The trust deed for an SMSF may allow for binding death benefit nominations. A Will can be challenged in court, but under a properly executed binding death benefit nomination trustees must pay a death benefit as directed. This provides greater certainty in the distribution of assets.

Despite the detailed legal responsibilities attached to SMSFs, it is clear that many people find the ability to manage their nest eggs highly rewarding.

Although there are many things to consider when converting your super funds to an SMSF, the added choices, flexibility and cost effectiveness might far outweigh the additional time taken for administrative purposes. Barrie Elvish will move from Brisbane to the Wimmera and take the reins as Wimmera Uniting Care’s chief executive officer in early October.

Wimmera Uniting Care board chairwoman Pam Clarke announced the appointment and said Mr Elvish had spent more than 20 years in the notfor-profit sector working in senior management positions for the National Trust, St John Ambulance and University of South Australia Students Union.

“Barrie was inaugural chief executive of the Queensland Crèche and Kindergarten Association, which under his leadership expanded to become the second largest early-childhood education and care provider in Australia with more than 1000 employees in 400 services,” she said.

“Barry began his career as a teacher in Adelaide and was then appointed manager of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, a personal development program for young people.”

It has more than 400 staff, 300 volunteers and care-providers and delivers more than 80 programs and activities in the areas of childcare, family support, housing, disability support, counselling and mental health support.

The L2P program assists learner drivers who do not have access to a supervising driver or vehicle, to gain the 120 hours of driving experience they require to apply for a probationary licence. New era begins for rural health

S

onographer Steve Jones has helped launch a new era in the region’s health services at Rural Northwest Health.

Rural Northwest Health has taken control of its radiology department and Mr Jones has started providing ultrasound service each Monday and Friday.

The health service has also employed radiographers to take x-rays conducted on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Mr Jones is also able to provide the service where necessary, during his visits.

Mr Jones has worked in radiography for more than 20 years and five years as a sonographer, having previously worked at Angliss Hospital in Ferntree Gully.

He said he had always been keen to work in a rural environment.

“I don’t enjoy the rat race of Melbourne much so I was very interested in this opportunity to soak up the country life,” Mr Jones said.

“I’m expecting to help RNH improve its services.

“A lot more can be achieved when a health service has regular imaging available.”

RNH’s radiology department had been under contract to

“And people will be able to access the services very quickly which has been a big frustration for many Wimmera patients.”

tie and a one-vote win highlighted Wimmera Football League and Wimmera Netball Association junior best and fairest awards.

Ararat’s Alexander Laidlaw won the football league’s under-17 count with 24 votes from Minyip-Murtoa’s Jack Boschen, 23, with Horsham player Baillie Batchelor third with 21.

At the end of a thrilling 17 and under netball count, results left Tiffany Boatman from Ararat

and Dimboola’s Billie-Jo Barber joint winners on 33 votes.

Horsham’s Jedda Heard and Mikayla Rethus from Horsham Saints were joint runners-up on 23. Sarah Marchment from Warrack Eagles was third with 22.

In other results, Horsham’s Jayden Besford won an under-14 best and fairest award with 38 votes from Horsham RSL Diggers’ rising talent Kieren Priestley, 31, and Jack Antonio, Ararat, 27.

n every footy finals series there is a smoky, also known as the dark horse or outsider. It’s that team that few expect to make a major impression on the ultimate result but invariably causes a boilover.

This year Warrack Eagles will enter Wimmera League finals with the title.

Last year’s grand finalists have done enough to suggest they are far from a spent force. With coach Tim Inkster steadily massaging his group into a more than competitive unit, the Eagles loom as a potent outfit.

Warrack Eagles, similar to Horsham Saints and Minyip-Murtoa, have been bobbing along somewhere on the heels of Horsham and Dimboola.

Many expected the side to crash and burn after the departure of several players from last year’s team but it hasn’t happened.

In fact the Eagles show the signs of a team on the good side of a rebuild with plenty of willing youngsters coming through the ranks while a seasoned vanguard set the standard.

A few players have been setting the pace for the Eagles but none more so than key-position star Peter Weir.

Strong-marking Weir has evolved into a much more rounded player than when he first burst on the scene.

Weir looks particularly good when team-mates breaking clear and creating an overlap through the middle can isolate him for a one-on-one contest with his opponent.

This also allows Dale Hinkley or Jae McGrath to swoop in and have an impact.

The Eagles also seem to grow a couple of centimetres when Inkster plays and the team generally does well if rebounding Ben Spicer, the weekly second or third-best player in the list, is on song.

The Yarriambiack crew plays its

best football when they hunt in packs and the likes of Brad Krahe, Jake Peters and Jason Hinkley can become damaging alongside Alex Ross, Brock Orval, Paul Atkin, Luke Kemp, Phillip Huebner, Liam Stewart and co who tend to feed off each other for confidence.

Meanwhile, in the finals heat campaigners Ben Harrison, Jacob Cheney and Health Schulz all have huge leadership roles to help steady the ship.

Roos are ready to attack finals

T

here is little doubt that Dimboola was always going to capture the imagination of the Wimmera Football League public this year after its appointment of coach Stuart Farr.

The Roos seized the opportunity to snap up the experienced premiership campaigner and have since enjoyed riding a crest of a wave into the finals.

With Farr’s disciplined approach to fitness and application added to a well-balanced list, Dimboola has evolved into an outstanding playing unit.

What is immediately obvious when scanning through the minor premier’s list is how many options the coaching group has in getting the balance right to win big games.

There’s been plenty of discussion about the Roos’ muscle across the lines and selectors are going to find it tough to fit all their big players in the side.

Demons’ domination continues I

t took a few weeks into the season, but Horsham was soon back to its familiar dominating best in Wimmera Football League.

The Demons, now a perennial finalist, again enter a finals series as one of the teams to beat, this time under the joint leadership of Jordyn Burke and Brad Hartigan.

As usual, Horsham has had to modify its game style to suit a refreshed list and this year the Demons have adopted a penetrating smash-and-grab game that opens possibilities for a multiple list of goalkickers and young up and comers.

Hartigan thrives on 50-50 duels out of the middle, working closely with Nick Pekin who is a master of navigating through heavy traffic.

John Wood, another slick runner, has had a breakout season and youngsters such as Billy Lloyd and Rhona Conboy are starting to have a significant impact on Demons fortunes.

Then there is the frenetic Tyler Blake who has been eye-catching all year with his tremendous runs from the de-

Jye Smith has also slipped into best-player lists of late.

But Horsham is not simply all about running the ball.

This year the Demons have also worked hard at securing possession in the clinches and that’s where one of the best utilities in league Garrett Liston has come into play.

Liston is as good in the air as on the ground, playing larger and taller than his build and has capable lieutenants in Jeremy Hartigan, Ryan

O’Connor, former Horsham Diggers utility Tim Eldridge and the ever-lurking Shaun Gilbert who backs his judgment to drift into open space.

Veteran Chris Walsh provides a steadying influence and there few players who enjoy kicking goals more than Alex Thomson and mercurial Joel Geue.

Of course having the sure hands of Burke and athletic talents of Dylan Parish loitering in the attacking 50-metre arc caps off a ripper Demons team.

Burras require ignition spark

T

he reputation of Dunmunkle football will rest on the shoulders of Minyip-Murtoa when the Burras enter the finals as a serious challenger.

Many Wimmera Football League watchers are confident they have yet to see the best of the Burras this season and are waiting to see if finals tempo will provide an ignition spark.

Minyip-Murtoa has certainly produced exceptional patches of football this year, especially when on the attack and pressing hard in waves down the ground.

Yet there is a perception that the Burras have fancied more of a shutdown system for much of the season against quality opponents, applying the clamps and trying to grind their way to victory.

The jury is out on how coach Scott Arnold will approach the finals and whether he will give his talented group he green light to push forward of the

ball. It would be a brave move considering potential opponents.

Arnold certainly has weapons at his disposal if the Burras can isolate players in oneon-one battles.

Brayden Ison is among the most deftly talented talls in Wimmera League and in averaging almost three goals a game often proves a handful

for the best of defenders. Also blessed with a massive kick, he one who might relish a free rein.

Then there is multiple league representative Clinton Midgley, who seems to have found new niche in defence after establishing a reputation as a key-position forward.

Both are critical in MinyipMurtoa fortunes.

John Delahunty is another ne player who might be waiting for the finals to start rekindling his best football.

Delahunty has raw talent and apart from the last few weeks has rarely been out of the bestplayer lists.

The Burras have done enough to suggest they might take a major scalp in the finals, especially

if Declan Foott continues to influence what happens and others such as young Kade Petering and Blake Young continue to win the ball.

The Minyip-Murtoa formula also includes the spice of Jayden Beaumont and Gus Trethowan, intensity of Zac Cross and lively Tim Mosquito.

Saints’ engine needs tune up

S

ince midway through the Wimmera Football League season Horsham Saints have been trying to recapture the form that initially stunned the competition.

It’s almost like the club’s footy mechanics have been working day and night trying to get powerful cogs within the camp greased up and running efficiently again.

Time has run out. The Saints enter the finals knowing they have the players, incentive and game plan to make a serious impression. But can they do it?

Everything was going gangbusters for Brendan Broadbent’s Saints until player unavailability and injury suddenly robbed the side of the depth it had enjoyed and threw a mighty spanner in the works.

The crew has still been good enough to beat the also-rans but it is a question now whether the group can take on the best and win.

There is plenty to like about

Toohey Medallist Phillip Butsch, one of the most balanced players in the league, has again led from the front and has rarely been missing from the top three best players for his team, let alone the best six.

Alongside Butsch are the likes of Bernard Ward, Nathan Clough, Steve Thomas, Dennis Adams and Garry Hallam, all quality inside players who love getting or enjoy stopping their opponents from getting the hard ball.

High-leaping forward Heath Watson is better when he has

room to move and the likes of Matt Combe and Jacob CookeHarrison revel when given a chance to get into the open.

Alex McRae is another who has stepped up, the skills of Jacob O’Beirne will be important in the finals and ruckman

Michael Rowe might well be the wildcard to give the Saints the edge if any game goes to the wire.

Much will depend on how well the Saints’ bottom six players perform throughout the finals.

Survival of the fittest T

he Terry and Karina O’Sullivan stable continues to gather momentum in the early stages of the new racing season.

The Stawell duo had its improving maiden galloper Poppy’s Boy engaged in a 1000-metre scamper at Donald in trying conditions last Saturday.

Former O’Sullivan apprentice jockey Jason ‘Grasshopper’ Lyon had the riding duties and on-course patrons were warming to the pair as a price of 4-1 was the best from the bookies .

When the field of winless gallopers were sent on their way, Lyon opted to settle his mount in a position slightly worse than midfield.

Approaching the 600-metre marker the four-year-old gelding was given clear galloping room and starting to loom ominously as the pressure was applied.

It became apparent when the 10 horses swept up to the home turn it was going to be a survival of the fittest because half of the neddies were doing it tough and looking for the white flag. However the same could not be said for Poppy’s Boy, who was absolutely bolting on the shifty track.

After a couple of cracks with the ‘shillelagh’ the son of God’s Own cruised to victory in the run to the wire, overpowering race favourite Stylish Lily to score by a length in the finish The win was Poppy’s Boy’s first in five attempts and he could sneak another win or two before the Wimmera tracks dry out.

Haakon turns it on

Another trainer starting to gather momentum in the hope of another good season is Telopea Downs’ Darryl Dodson.

The stable from Kaniva had recent acquisition Haakon taking his place in a maiden plate over 1350 metres also at Donald.

Regular rider Holly McKechnie was again in the saddle hoping the stallion would improve after a disappointing last start. Local punters showed no regard for the horse and you could almost write your own betting ticket with the local bagmen in the ring.

Makovec, 37, won a five-kilometre Australia Post Handicap in Ararat on Sunday, clocking a personal best of 22.29 minutes and denying runner-up, Ararat medico Eric van Opsta, his first success since 2009.

But even that might not have been enough to topple Geoff Ryan, at 72 the club’s most

senior member, who had a commanding lead when he lost sight of the witch’s hats and went the wrong way in McDonald Park.

Ryan, whose win in the Clem Hall Memorial at Stawell last year was only his second in 13 years, had high hopes before the race after handicapper, Charlie Jones, gave him a generous 30-second lift following a fourth in a race a week before.

Ryan is one of the club’s most experienced athletes but was caught in unfamiliar territory when left in front soon after the

start and had no one ahead to lead him in the right direction.

Ryan finished way ahead of the pack, but realised his mistake and was furious with himself for his concentration lapse.

By earning maximum points, Makovec skipped to a threepoint lead from Ian McCready.

Peter Gibson is a further five points behind and needing a second win in one of the last two races to have any chance of toppling the leader.

Already a winner this year, Makovec, has finished out of

the top 10 only once in his last 17 races.

Neither Makovec nor his teenage son Nathan, seventh on handicap, are dedicated trainers and succeed on raw ability alone. But even Nathan recorded a personal best of 20.15 to be fastest in the race ahead of McCready and Sam Gason.

The club has a bye on Father’s Day but will race in Stawell on September 8 for the fivekilometre Clem Hall Memorial.

Blitz part of Wimmera tennis launch

A Wimmera Week of Tennis launch at Haven Market on October 5 will include an Australian Open Blitz tour.

The Haven launch hits off a week of tennis events across the Wimmera and as part of the blitz tour Australian Open trophies will be on display.

Event spokeswoman Andrew Cross said the AO Blitz tour inclusion in the launch would encourage people get involved.

“Along with the regular stallholders, local tennis clubs will be hosting novelty tennis activities, MLC Hot Shots games for children, speed server, a tennis racquet hurling competition and so much more,” she said.

The Wimmera Week of Tennis is also a celebration the opening of flood-recovery court redevelopment at several Wimmera localities.

The week will also be springboard for the launch of tennis this summer.

Horsham is one of 24 regional Victorian centres included in the national Australian Open Blitz promotional tour.

The blitz involves communities generating points through tennis challenges in an attempt to have Australian Open players representing them uring the Grand Slam event.

Kees launch bid to defend premiership

K

alkee starts its finals campaign when it fronts Laharum in a second semi-final showdown at Rupanyup on Saturday.

The Kees had the luxury of a week off while the Demons managed to get over the top of EdenhopeApsley in heavy conditions at Kalkee and will front up against the minor premier ready for the challenge.

Both sides boast quality forward lines, which mean the winner of the game, will be determined in the midfield.

Shannon Argall and Jason Przibilla spearhead the Laharum assault in the air while Daniel Griffiths is damaging when the ball in on the ground.

Kalkee will probably look to Ben Hobbs and Ben Lawson to tackle the big two while Brendan Hobbs might get the job of stopping Griffiths. Rhys Bennett has been in sensational form for Laharum across the half forward line but young return-

ing Ballarat Rebel Josh Webster should make life pretty difficult for him.

The Kalkee defence, led

by Webster, Josh Mibus and Oliver Young will be pivotal to the outcome. If they can hold tough and provide rebound, the Demons might be under a lot of pressure to kick a winning score.

Jimmy Wray is a livewire for the Laharum side and along with Gerard Matthews will have to make the Kees’ half backs accountable but also run and present and give options when going forward.

Picked up slack

Laharum should welcome back Keegan Mason to the side from representative football. The versatile big man could quite easily hold down centre half back or the ruck but is more likely to play back to cover one of the big Kalkee forwards.

Josh Beddison hasn’t been as potent up forward for Kalkee in the last quarter of the year but veteran Adam Carter and bullocking Grant Schultz have

picked up any slack and make it hard for sides to match the trio.

Mason, Brett Ervin and Kane Parish will take the tall Kalkee forwards but they are all light-bodied defenders and will hope for help from a third man up to bring the ball to ground and get it out of defence.

In the middle, can Laharum stop Steve Schultz, Tim Wade, Simon Hobbs and Paul Christian? If ruckman Jake Hobbs gets first hands on the ball the Demons will be under immediate pressure.

Daniel Easson was superb last week and with Robbie Miller, Zac Price and Andrew Combe will have the responsibility of breaking even around the stoppages.

Laharum will look to wear Hobbs down by rotating Marcus Demaria, Ben Peucker and even Argall through the ruck to give the Demons the advantage but they will need everything to go right to stop the Kees from advancing to another grand final.

First semi-final Perennial finals giant killers Swifts take on a deflated Edenhope-Apsley at Quantong on Sunday and the Baggies will go in full of confidence after running over the top of Harrow-Balmoral last week.

The Baggies are quick and given a dry ball will create all sorts of problems for the Saints who are probably light on to cover all of Swifts’ speedsters.

Swifts boast a potent and varied forward line. Matt Close is likely to play on Jeremy Joiner if fit and Charlie Stewart should get the job on resting rovers Paul Hanns and Isaac

Rathgeber. But finding match ups for the likes of Scott Carey, Seam Mantell and Lachlan Hamilton might prove more difficult for the Edenhope-Apsley coaching panel.

The Baggies’ Achilles heel might be their defence and EdenhopeApsley will need to win clean midfield ball and get it in quick to give their forwards one-onone contests.

James Dixon is a class player who needs to perform on the big stage and there is none bigger than a cut-throat final.

Holy Grail

Cam Domaschenz is proving to be a solid pathway to goal for Eden-

hope-Apsley. The centre half forward has regularly been bagging his three and four goals and if Ben Fox can limit his output then the Baggies might continue on their quest for the Holy Grail.

Finding a match-up for Dixon will be tough and Justin Thomas is likely to get first crack while Jake Davis sides up to Matt Cranage.

Cranage was starved of opportunities last week he will want to raise his output and put pressure on the Baggies.

After a slow start to the season Swifts joint coach and ruckman Ben Martin has found form and become a solid contributor.

If he can get the ball out

into space to the likes of Ricky Whitehead, Jake Goodes, Damon Folkes and Ash Cowen the Baggies might be irrepressible and charging towards another week of finals.

Carl Obst and Matt Tober will therefore shoulder a lot of responsibility.

The ruckman needs to break even in aerial contests and keep the ball in tight so the hard bodies of Brent Christie and Dave McLeish can begin to do their work.

If the duo can win the ball and get it out to the ball carriers in Clint Rokebrand and Will Middleton the Saints will be in the contest, if not the front, until late in the game.

Cats move on, so now the Blues meet Tigers

Woomelang-Lascelles moved into Mallee Football League’s preliminary final after defeating reigning premier Walpeup-Underbool by 15 points at Beulah last week.

Star forward Corey Kelly dominated; kicking six goals for the Cats in what was a high-scoring affair.

This week, the top two sides of the season do battle at Underbool as the Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers come up against Beulah.

Both the Tigers and the Blues have had great seasons and will meet for the fourth time this season.

Beulah won the first two games while Sea Lake Nandaly-Tigers hit back with a massive 66-point victory in the final round of the season.

All that counts for nothing now

though as finals football is different football and both sides will come out firing to ensure themselves a spot in the grand final.

Starting straight off in the middle of the ground is the tantalizing battle of two highly skilled midfield groups.

Col Durie, Tom Summerhayes, Lance Brown and Mathew Elliot will lead the way for the Tigers at the centre clearances and around the ground but they will be met with a classy Beulah on-ball brigade.

Expect the likes of 2013 Russ Gravestocks Medal runner-up Micah Buchanan to produce a fantastic game, while Andrew Hughes and Ryan McKenzie will bullock their way through to give the Beulah forwards a chance to kick a good score.

Dan McEwan is one player who caused massive problems for the Blues in the last round; with his high-leaping ruck work a great advantage in giving the Tiger midfielders first use of the ball.

Beulah will be hoping Kim Hallam is right to play, because both times he has been able to battle McEwan he has come out on top and provided the Blues with precision ruck work.

Beulah will need to find a way of containing powerhouse forwards Cliff Ryan and Simon Weekly. Ryan kicked eight goals in their last match to fall just two short of his century.

Luke Spasic is likely to miss for the Blues, which means Sam Martin and Andrew Bell will have to take over the key defensive posts. Eddie Keenan and Dylan Turnbull will get the job on the

Tigers’ small forwards in Joel Lloyd and Liam Barry while Brad Shannon is likely to return to provide Beulah with run and carry from the half backline.

Stephen Lyons controls the backline for the Tigers and showed just how good he can be when he is allowed to run loose, dominating against the Blues in their last meeting.

Two-pronged attack Beulah will look to Dennis Redden to kick a bag and the Blues will be hoping Peter Lehmann will return to provide the team with a powerful two-pronged attack.

Luke Martin did a great job on Redden last game, but the big forward loves the big stage and will be looking to produce his best performance of the season.

Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers dominated Beulah in the last match because the Blues played unaccountable football.

The Tigers were able to find free players all over the ground, which allowed their forwards to take advantage of the quick delivery.

Beulah is a much better side than that game suggests though, and will hit the Tigers hard to ensure they aren’t able to get their free-running game going.

This will be another fantastic battle of two top-class sides and will go right down to the wire.

Beulah has a bit more x-factor through the middle though, which will enable them to move into the grand final with a 12-point victory.

The loser of the game will meet Woomelang-Lascelles in the preliminary final at Hopetoun.

Switch alters game’s dynamics A

last-minute switch from Murtoa to Minyip grounds is set to change the dynamics of a Wimmera Football League qualifying final on Saturday.

The change, due to poor surface conditions at Murtoa after heavy rain, means Horsham and Warrack Eagles will now be able to exploit extra space for their runners.

The confines of Murtoa, which often produce hard inside contests, are significantly different to the Minyip reserve, which is one of the biggest grounds in the competition.

The Demons would have welcomed or been ambivalent about the change but the switch has probably helped an Eagles side that relies heavily on creating space.

Horsham too enjoys having room to move so theoretically fans are in for an exciting free-flowing contest.

Horsham should by all rights smash the Eagles.

There’s a feeling by some that the Yarriambiack camp, despite the cards simply falling its way, has slipped into the double-chance spot by default.

The Eagles have as much right as anyone to finish third and in realty are probably the biggest dark horses in the finals likely to cause an upset.

The chances are that Warrack Eagles might manage to catch the Demons off guard.

Horsham skittled Horsham RSL Diggers in the last home-and-away round last week with little fuss.

But the Demons, perhaps guilty of looking a week ahead, didn’t seem as sharp as usual.

They had more turnovers than coaches Jordyn Burke and Brad Hartigan would have liked and

their finishing was occasionally off the boil.

In their defence, key utilities Dylan Parish and Garrett Liston were missing from the action, Parish resting an injury and Liston having a spell and helping to direct traffic from the sidelines.

What was obvious is how big an influence the Demons’ slick ball movers have on games.

Barometer

Tyler Blake was again outstanding, simply running away from his opponents and wingman John Wood has continued stamp his name all over the competition.

Horsham in-the-clinches barometer Darcy Taylor was also willing to produce gut-busting runs, working with the likes of Nick Pekin while Jeremy Hartigan monstered his way into the game in the forward arc.

The Eagles also finished the home-and-away season with a hefty win, in their case over Stawell, and it was critical to note that experienced players were in the vanguard.

Peter Weir continues to have a mighty say on what happens in games and last weekend Ben Harrison, Brad Krahe, Jacob Cheney and Ben Spicer all featured in the best.

Wildcard Dale Hinkley also kicked five goals and as usual for the Eagles plenty of others enjoyed goal-kicking spoils.

The Eagles will give the qualifying final a fair crack, especially now the game is at Minyip, but Horsham will ultimately prove too good and win by three goals.

Elimination final

The action continues at Horsham City Oval on Sunday in a suddendeath elimination final between season-long protagonists Horsham Saints and Minyip-Murtoa.

A loss to a spoiling Nhill last week would have been the last thing Minyip-Murtoa leaders would have wanted but the result might have been a timely wakeup call.

Minyip-Murtoa has hovered somewhere in the finals mix all season and now has a chance to step up and have a say.

A quick scan at the quarter-byquarter scores from last week reveal that the Burras led at every change and had six more scoring shots than the Tigers only to lose at the line.

Are the Burras guilty of having a mindset where they try to avoid losing instead of winning games?

We’ll wait and see.

Attacking

Minyip-Murtoa forwards must convert and all eyes will be on Brayden Ison to see if he plays a key attacking role this weekend.

Tim Mosquito and Chris Delahunty proved last week that they could be dangerous in front of the sticks and John Delahunty and Zac Cross again led from the front.

Adam Gerdtz’s leadership will be important and Kade Petering has been providing great dash.

The Saints, meanwhile, have been waiting all season for the finals and might have the game to unsettle the Burras in the heat of finals.

Many expect defender Phillip Butsch to turn it on and forward Gavin Kelm, who revels on a bigger stage, to threaten all day.

Garry Hallam will also play a major leadership role, ruckman Michael Rowe might well provide the Saints with an edge in the middle and there is every chance, given a dry ball, that Heath Watson’s performance at half forward will ultimately prove telling.

The Saints will win a thriller by two goals.

Magpies and Pumas in grand final preview

After a well-deserved week off, Wickliffe Lake-Bolac plays Moyston-Willaura in a Mininera and District Football League second semi-final in what some would pick as a grand final preview.

Last week Moyston-Willaura made easy work of Glenthompson-Dunkeld, scoring a 10-goal victory.

The Pumas led at every change and never looked like losing.

Aaron McKinnis had a day

out in front of goals, kicking seven to be one of MoystonWillaura’s better players.

With Joshua Day and Rhys Cronin providing plenty of run and ball-winning skills the Pumas will set themselves to beat the Magpies.

They would also be confident knowing they are the only team that has beaten them this year.

Wickliffe-Lake Bolac will go into Saturday’s game well rested and injury free, but only time will tell whether the week off has helped or hindered the side.

In a first semi-final Tatyoon will play Glenthompson-Dunkeld, which after last week’s loss will hope it can turn the

tables and win this weekend.

Nathan Curtis along with Sam and Brad White were in the best players for the Rams last week and were shining lights in an otherwise dismal day.

The Rams will be looking for another massive performance from them as well as their team-mates to get them over the line.

finals they are old hands.

Scores were level at quarter time, suggesting Tatyoon was in for a close game.

However, that was the only stage for the day where Tatyoon looked vulnerable.

With a 12-goal last quarter Tatyoon ultimately came out a 13-goal victor.

Tyler and Mitchell Cronin led the charge in front of goals, kicking eight and four respectively, while midfielders Andrew Maconachie and Sean McDougall dominated across

the ground as they have all season.

As far as Tatyoon is concerned it is certainly still in contention for a flag and the way it played last Sunday few would doubt the side.

Although Wickliffe-Lake Bolac is still the front runner, there has been some fantastic football played in the first week of finals and it is anyone’s game to win on the day.

This week’s games are played at Mininera on Saturday and Lake Bolac on Sunday.

Driven: Hyundai’s i30 SR here from $27,990 H

Kia, launched last week with identical pricing and an identical powertrain to the i30 SR.

The SR launches almost 10 months to the day after its world premiere in concept form at last year’s Australian International Motor Show in Sydney, alongside a similarly souped-up version of the smaller Accent hatch.

Fitting, then, that Australian showrooms are the first in the world to get the i30 SR - a ready-made rival for a spate of warmed-up hatches launched recently including the locally made 132kW/230Nm Holden Cruze SRi-V ($26,490) and 140kW/240Nm Nissan Pulsar SSS ($29,690).

Proportional sales of hotted-up variants are higher in Australia than almost anywhere else worldwide, with up to 30 per cent of all small-cars sold classified as ‘premium’ or ‘sporty’.

yundai’s hottest five-door hatch to date, the 129kW/209Nm i30 SR, has touched down in Australia, priced from $27,990 before on-road costs.

The small-car segment is Australia’s largest, and a significant percentage of private sales are of high-end or sporting versions such as the SR. Hyundai has sold 17,272 i30 hatches and wagons this year, making it Australia’s third most popular small car behind the Toyota Corolla and Mazda3.

The company expects to sell as many as 250 units of the SR each month.

De-riguer The i30 SR joins its hotter Veloster SR cousin in HMCA’s sport-oriented line-up, which pairs a turbocharged 1.6-litre 150kW/265Nm engine with a quirky 2+1 door layout priced from $31,990.

Unlike most rivals in this de-rigeur segment, the SR sports a normally aspirated engine rather than a turbocharger. The 2.0-litre GDi engine is shared with the larger i40 family sedan and wagon range, matched to either a six-speed manual gearbox or $2200 more expensive six-speed automatic transmission.

CHEAP THRILLS: The hottest i30 to date has arrived in Australia and will do battle with the Holden Cruze SRi-V and Nissan Pulsar SSS.

The engine redlines at 6500rpm and develops more than 200Nm between

4000 and 5500rpm, meaning it needs to spin up to extract the most out of it. Hyundai claims a respectable 0-100km/h dash of 7.7 seconds (manual) or 8.6 seconds (auto) with a full fuel tank.

Combined fuel economy for the i30 SR manual is 7.2L/100km, while the six-speed automatic’s combined figure is 7.5L/100km.

Hyundai’s new-born contender is based on the mid-range $25,590 i30 Elite, meaning standard features such as a seven-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation and live traffic updates, rear-view camera, automatic headlights, dual-zone climate control, onetouch function of the power windows, rain-sensing wipers and push-button start with keyless entry.

For the $2400 premium, the SR adds the punchier engine - up 19kW and 31Nm on the regular car’s 1.8-litre unit - larger 17-inch alloy wheels, a unique grille with glossy black inserts, new rear diffuser, Xenon headlights, LED rear combination lights, alloyfaced pedals, partial-leather seats – electric powered for the driver – and a self-dimming rear-view mirror.

It also sports a more dynamic, Australian-honed, suspension tune. As with other Hyundai models sold here, the brand’s local subsidiary sorts out more suitable suspension and damping and sends the revised tune back to the Korean factory for build.

The SR gets bespoke Sachs front and rear dampers, plus four per cent stiffer front springs. Both the rear spring rate and stabiliser bar are unchanged over the regular i30.

HMCA claims its local team tested 43 separate suspension component combinations to optimise spring and damper rates, and conducted evaluations on a trio of closed-circuit tests.

Development included 13 front damper builds and 23 rear damper builds.

“The i30 SR incorporates performance and styling improvements to deliver a truly exciting driving experience,” said HMCA chief operating officer John Elsworth.

“Like the Veloster SR Turbo, which also has a locally developed suspension tune, the i30 SR is a clear representation of Hyundai Motor Company’s willingness to embrace Australian product initiatives.”

HMCA’s product planning manager Andrew Tuitahi said the company “aimed for a setup that was communicative, responsive and well controlled”.

“I’m confident we’ve achieved that,” he said. “The i30 SR has increased dynamic ability without sacrificing everyday usability. Most importantly, it’s also great fun to drive.”

Ferrari’s 458 earns its stripes F

errari will premiere the meanest iteration of its mid-engined 458 coupe to date at the Frankfurt motor show on September 10.

In a sign of things to come from the Prancing Horse brand, the 458 Speciale, as it is called, features “advanced active aerodynamics” that will feature on all new future roadgoing Ferraris.

The Italian brand has not gone into specifics on exactly how this aero system works, other than to say that moveable components front and rear add downforce and cut drag. The Speciale, it says, is the most aerodynamic production Ferrari to date, bar none.

It also recruited fellow Italian auto icon Pininfarina to pen the aggressive, F1-style new front bumper, plus the racier rear diffuser. Ferrari has also ditched the ‘regular’ 458’s triple rear exhaust pipes in favour of a new centrally mounted twin-pipe setup.

As with previous special-edition Ferraris such as the 360 Challenge Stradale and 430 Scuderia, there’s a special stripe running along the bonnet, roof and boot.

Power transfer The Speciale also gets a new active safety system called Side Slip angle Control that lends extra control at the limit. It’s essentially an advanced

torque management system that corrects the car’s line by adjusting the amount of torque at each rear corner via traction control and an electronic differential.

The firebreathing, mid-mounted 4.5-litre normally aspirated engine located under a signature glass cover is fettled to produce an extra 20kW. The engine now sends 445kW at a screaming 9000rpm and 540Nm at 6000rpm through the rear wheels.

Specific output, or power per litre, is minutely shy of 100kW, which Ferrari says breaks the record for a naturally aspirated engine in any road car.

The 0-100km/h sprint has been cut to 3.0 seconds dead – down 0.4s – and from standstill to 200km/h in 9.1s, while emissions are kept at 275 grams per kilometre – if anyone cares to know the latter.

Ferrari says its too early to go into Australian pricing or allocation, if indeed there is any, but given the previous-generation F430 Scuderia cost about 20 per cent more than the regular car here, expect a hefty leap over the regular $526,000 458 coupe should the car come here in limited numbers.

Golf’s kick in the R V

olkswagen has revealed a new version of its flagship Golf R, featuring a three- and five-door hatchback more than twice as powerful as a Toyota Corolla, yet using no more fuel.

The new R, due at next month’s Frankfurt motor show and featuring all-paw underpinnings mated to a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine cranked up to 221kW in European specification, officially strips 0.8secs off the old model’ s 0-100km/h sprint, dispatching it in 4.9secs when mated to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

VW’s official release does not mention the torque output of the range-topping Golf, but the same engine is used in the Audi S3. Australian versions of that car will produce 206kW and 380Nm after its hot-weather detune.

Volkswagen Australia won’t say if the R sold here will get the same detune when it arrives before the middle of next year, priced around the $50,000 mark.

The R-badged Golf mated to a sixspeed manual gearbox is a little slower – 5.1 secs from 0-100km/h – but that is still a 0.6secs improvement over the old slightly detuned 188kW R – VW usually strips off a few kilowatts to account for Australia’s hotter weather – launched here just over two years ago.

The new R’s top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h. It features a special front air dam, side skirts and

rear diffuser to help it stand out from the regular Golf range.
