Mallee packs a punch C

ompared with only three months ago, the 2016 season is looking much brighter for farmers across western Victoria.

After what many grain growers deemed to be the perfect start to the season, the process of checking the rain gauge has become, of late, a matter of interest rather than a hopeful and somewhat stressful exercise.

With the long-range forecast continuing to point towards above-average spring rain across south-eastern Australia, there is a lot to look forward to in the coming months.

In saying this, the prospect of average to above average rain after two very tough seasons in 2014 and 2015 throws up its own set of unique challenges.

This is because, one, it hasn’t happened yet, and two, growers need to be prepared in the event that it does happen in order to make the most of a potentially good season.

One of the major decisions grain growers are currently faced with is about fertiliser application and how much they should feed their crops before the crucial months of September and October roll around.

Nowhere is this more pertinent than in the northern Wimmera and Mallee where growers have grappled with the decision, and significant cost, of applying more nitrogen in the hope of achieving the maximum yields possible from, mainly, their cereal crops.

Many growers have been surprised recently with deep ‘N’ soil tests which show higher than expected nitrogen levels due to increased mineralisation after good rain and a prolonged period of warmerthan-average soil temperatures early in the season.

But it seems the overwhelming consensus has been to increase the rate of urea in an attempt to build crops up as much as possible during their early growth stages.

The hope is that crops will be needing this additional ‘N’.

Let’s face it, nothing compares with the satisfaction gained from applying urea, or what is more colloquially known as ‘flicking snow’, knowing that you are doing something to help give your crops and bottom line a boost, as well as making your neighbour a little nervous as to what you are up to in the paddock.

This surge in demand for urea combined with the demand being brought forward somewhat has in turn put fertiliser retailers and suppliers on the hop and scrambling

A small lift in planned application rates across the many hectares of the Wimmera-Mallee, and to a lesser degree in other parts of the state, equates to big volumes of urea, and as a result, tightness in supply.

Although supply is slowly beginning to free up as the small armada of urea ships begin to reach our shores, the challenge now lies in getting the product on farm and spread before the application of urea will no longer contribute to an increased yield.

Growers who sowed by the calendar and who made the decision early to not hold back on urea application are already watching their crops bulk up to a point where they look like they could be walked upon.

Other crops look like they actually have been walked upon because of lodging due to their early size.

On the list of problems growers face, lodging is certainly not the worst, although the bigger the crop, the more moisture it will require to get it to the finish line Here’s hoping the bold decisions being made by growers now pay off in the coming months and the long-range forecasters can keep their recent record intact when it comes to the spring forecast.

Scholarships available for young farmers Knight said the financial assistance was available through the State Government’s Young Farmer Scholarship Program.

“This is a great program and the VFF fully supports giving young farmers opportunities that could serve them well in their careers,” he said.

“We need to invest in the next generation because they are the future of agriculture.

“We need to make a career on the land an attractive option again.”

The funding consists of $5000 for study and a further $5000 to invest on the recip-

ient’s farm or in professional development activities.

After four weeks and eight trading days of price gains, the AWEX Eastern Market Indicator, EMI, faltered in the final week of selling before the annual three week recess on July 15, easing back nine cents, to close at a level of 1311 cents.

Weighing down on local wool prices during that week was the continuing strength of the Australian dollar, which pushed through 76 US cents, almost one cent higher than the previous week.

In US terms the EMI continued to climb and made a 12-month high, closing the week five cents higher at 998 US cents.

Its most recent low on this basis was made only nine months ago and is now trading 33 percent higher after making steady increases.

The spike in wool prices over recent weeks appeared to encourage wool into the marketplace and fewer than 41,000 bales were eventually offered in the final sale before recess – an amount almost 2000 more than the previous sale.

The merino fleece portion of the catalogue was the main drag on * the indicator, with prices as much as 25 cents lower. * The finer types were least affected, particularly the more stylish types, which even managed to firm in selected pockets.

Despite the negative result there were some encouraging signs on the final day when a firming tendency was noted towards the close.

Merino skirtings bucked the trend of the fleece sector and generally held firm while crossbreds recorded mixed results and the limited finer types of 25-26 microns surged 30 cents or more on the back of strong support, leaving the broader 30-32 categories to continue their trend lower. The Merino Carding Indicators closed slightly lower at all three auctions.

The annual mid-year recess is now in progress with sales set to resume in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle in the week beginning August 8.

ROOM TO GROW: The first Mallee Machinery Field Days were in 1979 with 30 dealers present.

Last year more than 8500 people visited the 350-plus exhibitors at the Speed site.

Humble beginnings, enormous vision T

he chartered members of Speed Lions Club searched for a fundraising venture that would hold them in a sound position to serve both the local and broader communities.

The first field days were in 1979 in a local paddock.

Thirty-nine dealers exhibited their products with an emphasis on broadacre agricultural machinery and equipment.

The two-day event was run in different temporary sites with all amenities

being erected and pulled down each year.

This was a major logistical exercise, and after six years, the current permanent site was settled on a leased area on the Sunraysia Highway between Speed and Turriff – 42 kilometres south of Ouyen and 55 kilometres north of Hopetoun.

Subsequently, permanent amenities were constructed and the club was successful in acquiring the original historic Speed Railway Station as its main office.

Through the years, permanent buildings and utilities were built to keep up with demand.

Today, the Mallee Machinery Field Days has earned the respect of the industry. It is a major event on the agricultural calendar and one of the biggest in the Mallee.

About 350 site holders and 8500

attendees make the event the success that it is. People come to seek out and evaluate equipment on offer, along with technical information to aid modern broadacre farming.

One of the features of the field days, which are on the first Thursday of August and the preceding Wednesday each year, is its circular design.

A section of the site is allocated for crafts and interests, which include fashion parades, central demonstrations and craft tables.

Mallee Machinery Field Days has

developed into one of the biggest in the state and has been a great fundraiser for Speed Lions Club and many other organisations.

Speed Lions Club has 24 members and without their volunteered hard labour and support from local sporting and social clubs, this event would not be the success it is today.

Confidence for Mallee event

D

emand for this year’s Mallee Machinery Field Days sites has been so strong, organisers have had to expand the event’s outside area.

Committee secretary Andrew McLean said the exhibition space would stretch ‘the furthest we have ever been’.

“We’ve gone all the way up to 224 sites outside,” he said.

“We’re choc-a-block and the inquiries keep coming in.”

Mr McLean said the field days’ inner sites were also filled.

“The craft and special interests tent was filled about a week ago and the ladies are doing a great job,” he said.

“Even though our focus is on agriculture, there is plenty going on to appeal to a wide audience, such as a fashion parade and health-focused activities.”

Mr McLean said the Mallee Machinery Field Days site, two kilometres south of Speed on Sunraysia Highway, was a hive of activity.

“The machinery is already arriving and the tents are going up,” he said.

The field days, on August 3 and 4, will showcase about 350 exhibitors.

“We hope to have 3500 people or more through the gates each day – that would be good,” Mr McLean said.

“At this stage it is going to be wet, but the weather might change to good.

“There’s always a debate about whether people come if it’s good spraying weather. Hopefully people find time to come and have a look, regardless.”

Mr McLean said there would be plenty to see, with equipment and machinery worth about $1-million on display.

He said several companies were expected to unveil new products.
