Fears over pool costs A

rarat mayor Ian Wilson has described an Ararat Rural City Council decision to defer a final decision on refurbishing the city’s 50-metre outdoor community pool as ‘the responsible thing to do’.

Cr Wilson said in a prepared statement that the council needed to have access to all relevant data and information before it could make an informed decision. This meant putting the project to tender. “This is a multi million-dollar project. By progressing the project to a final detailed tender stage, any potential builder can submit an accurate costing, and should be able to incorporate any community contributions into the project, he said. The council decided at its April meeting last week to defer making a final decision on the project until final project costs became clear through a tender process. Chief executive Andrew Evans said the

decision meant the council would spend another $25,000 to continue development of detailed designs and tender documents to get a final cost for the refurbishment project. “Councillors decided this so as to have all possible data before making a decision, he said.

The council revealed that figures from 4500 community surveys showed that 134 respondents wanted the project to go ahead. Ararat municipality has almost 12,000 residents.

Rate rise The council made its decision after analysing details that showed that even with community input reducing capital expenses, the project was likely to cost the community at least $2-million with operating costs of $240,000 a year.

Friday

16°

Cr Wilson: “We need to see the final data before making a decision, but I am very concerned at the potential rate rises that might be required to make this pool project happen, and then how much it will cost to run each year after that. “The municipality needs more multipurpose community facilities like Alexandra Oval and the YMCA, rather than single-use facilities that only operate for a few months each year. This is particularly the case when we already have three underutilised pools in our district, two outdoor seasonal pools, and the Ararat indoor pool that can be used 12 months of the year. I’m just not sure how much more our community can afford?

Clark Rubber Horsham wins franchise of the year award C

lark Rubber Horsham has won the highly regarded ‘VIC West, S.A and N.T Best Practice Franchise of the Year’ award at the 2013 Clark Rubber Annual Conference held in Auckland, New Zealand, earlier this month.

The annual conference brought together Clark Rubber’s national network of franchisees to celebrate and recognise excellence across the business, with Clark Rubber Horsham taking home the accolade ahead of 15 other stores from across the VIC West, S.A and N.T region.

EXCELLENCE AWARDED: Clark Rubber Horsham’s Graham and Joanne Keay receive the 2013 ‘VIC West, S.A and N.T Best Practice Franchise of the Year’ award at the Clark Rubber Annual Conference.

Clark Rubber Horsham franchisees Graham and Joanne Keay said they were very honoured and ecstatic to receive the award.

Shock win “We were extremely shocked to have picked up the award. This is the second time we’ve won the regional award, it’s incredibly exciting for the team and I think we’re all still a bit overwhelmed,” Graham said

Picture: CONTRIBUTED

2013 marks the 8th year that Graham and Joanne have been the franchise owners of the Horsham Clark Rubber store and in that time they’ve helped grow and establish the business into one of the most successful within the Clark Rubber network. “While this is a great achievement, none of it would have been possible without the ongoing support of our wonderful staff and the community. It’s been so rewarding growing our franchise into what it is today.”

Dedication “This award is a real credit to our dedicated staff for their ongoing hard work and contribution to the success of our store. We wouldn’t have been able to achieve what we have over the years without them. I’m sure our customers will be delighted to find out they’re purchasing their products from the ‘VIC West and S.A Regional Franchise of the Year’”

The stores were judged across a number of key areas including year on year sales increases, participation in staff training, compliance with the Clark Rubber model and store merchandising standards among others. Graham and Joanne were presented the award at the conference’s Gala Dinner in the company of over 300 of their peers, suppliers, and Clark Rubber associates. “We are fortunate to have a group of members who are passionate about independent retailing and are committed to the Clark Rubber brand,” said Gary Nye, Chief Operating Officer, Clark Rubber Franchising.

“These awards are our opportunity to recognise this commitment and excellence across our store network. Clark Rubber Horsham epitomises what our company is about; commitment to quality retailing and serving the community with helpful service and advice. I thank the team at Horsham for their loyalty over the years and for setting the benchmark for our business,” Gary continued. Clark Rubber, an icon of the Australian retail landscape, is a leader in the foam, rubber and modular swimming pool retail market.

‘Thank you!’ Clark Rubber Horsham franchisees Graham and Joanne and the team, would like to thank the local community for their support. Winner of 2012 Best Practice Franchise of the Year’ ‘VIC West, S.A and N.T, at the Clark Rubber Awards held in Auckland, New Zealand , April 2013.

Sport and spice

contest, whether it be philosophical, verbal or physical.

EDITORIAL

I

By DEAN LAWSON

f anyone had suggested that passion was disappearing from regional sport, in particular football, then they only need be at Central Park in Stawell last weekend. From all accounts, the melee that erupted at half time of a senior Wimmera Football League match was particularly nasty. We now wait for authorities to investigate the incident and throw the proverbial book at the offenders. While thankfully far and few between, these types of incidents occasionally happen and rightfully draw condemnation from most. Yet amid all the shock and disapproval from the regional football community there were the occasional obligatory comments between mates that harken back to the tribal origins of competitive contact sport. “Finally, some spice back in local footy,” was one comment. And another: “That’s worth money at the gate.” And so on. Simple satire? Of course, but it also hints heavily at how many of us yearn for passionate

We promote passionate solidarity and strength as virtues but also ask our champions and teams to observe sensible restraint and leadership. Through many generations we’ve had to draw and redraw boundaries between what is acceptable in the arena and sometimes the lines, through the haze of passion, anger and temper, become blurred.

Rules In understanding the potential for circumstances to go awry, we give ourselves the tough job of drawing up laws, rules, protocols and procedures to observe community sensibility while protecting the integrity of spirit. It comes down to how well we apply these safeguards that determine if our contact sports, that can harness such passion and community support, have a future. It has been said ad nauseam how important football and netball clubs are for regional Victorian centres. Just how important will be gauged on how authorities and officials interpret rules, apply penalties and assess ways of preventing similar incidents from happening in the future.

Waste innovators develop a crush for product use The troublesome issue of broken glass in much of the Wimmera’s kerbside recycling is set to become a thing of the past. Grampians Regional Waste Management Group, working with Desert Fringe Waste Management Group and Horsham Rural City Council, has developed a project that involves crushing broken glass to use as a sand replacement in pre-mixed concrete. The Horsham council is trialling the concept in footpath construction in Stewart Street in Horsham’s north-west Oatlands neighbourhood. The project has the potential to resolve the costly but inevitable recycling issue of dealing with broken glass. Grampians group executive officer Kerrie Tomkins said the problem was that broken glass had a ‘very’ low value and could cost recycling operators more to transport it to Melbourne than they made from the product.

“This project is an innovative solution to finding a way of using that product locally, so the cost of transporting it is no longer a problem,” she said. “The potential is that we might be able to redirect about 10,000 tonnes of broken glass gathered from across the region in a year. This glass would have cost money to either transport or dump in landfill, but now we can use it to explore new markets.

Working group Ms Tomkins added that that the project had the potential to expand beyond providing a simple alternative to sand in concrete. “There is potentially many ways we could use recycled glass in developing new products. For example, we could use tumbled glass in a range of new concrete products and pavers. Hopefully it can also lead to employment and economic opportunities.” The project has developed through a working group including quarry operator Co-

nundrum Holdings WIMMIX concrete batching, the two recycling operators and councils. As part of its research the working group inspected a glass-crushing plant in Melbourne. Horsham council acting technical services director Martin Duke said the inspection led to an offer of a quantity of crushed glass to the Horsham premix concrete company to trial. “It also led to the Horsham council having an opportunity to trial the product in a footpath-replacement project,” he said. The Stewart Street trial, which involves examining how the product performs in a streetscape environment, started last week. Household recycling rules for glass remain unchanged. The glass in the project comes from readily recyclable bottles and jars. Broken drinking glasses, made from a different class of glass, remain unsuitable for recycling.

Library centre upgrade on target for next year

A

$155,000 project to upgrade Horsham’s Mibus Centre is scheduled to be finished early next year.

Member for Lowan Hugh Delahunty said the centre, Wimmera Regional Library Corporation headquarters, would soon be accessible to all Horsham district residents. He said the State Government had provided $100,000, Horsham Rural City Council $10,000 and Horsham community groups $45,000 for the upgrade. “An upgrade of the existing building, through the addition of a new lift and toilet facilities, would provide much needed access to the centre’s first-floor amenities,

including the local library,” Mr Delahunty said.

“The Mibus Centre is an important local asset – attracting over 350 visitors a week – but it is the only major public facility in Horsham that does not have universal access. “The first step in the Victorian Government’s aim to provide sustainable infrastructure, facilities and services for regional communities is to ensure that existing town centre amenities are accessible to all, including people with disabilities.” Mr Delahunty said improving the centre’s entrance hall and providing a new

lift and toilet facilities would encourage more people to explore its many facilities and resources.

Money to boost city streetscape

H

orsham municipal leaders have an extra $500,000 in State Government funding to enhance the streetscape environment surrounding the city’s new multi million-dollar performing arts centre and art gallery.

Member for Lowan Hugh Delahunty announced the funding, which will complement significant government and community investment in the development. The project will be managed and jointly funded by Horsham Rural City Council and include landscaping and laneway improvements. The $18.5-million Horsham Performing Arts Centre and art gallery will involve major modifications to Horsham Town Hall. Work is scheduled to start in August and be complete by January, 2015. Mr Delahunty said the central Wilson Street and Pynsent precinct was set to become a

new focal point for tourists as well as district residents.

“The streetscape enhancement project will result in a more pleasant and attractive environment that can comfortably accommodate increased pedestrian traffic,” he said. “Importantly, it will address drainage issues in the area and remove overhead power lines. “A verandah will also be added to the Performing Arts Centre in Pynsent Street to provide shelter around the entrance.” Mr Delahunty said that funding for the streetscape project would come from a Putting Locals First program ?— part of the $1 billion Regional Growth Fund to support ‘improvement projects that reflected local priorities’.

Hall opens business door Horsham Rural City Council has put the main contracting job to redevelop Horsham Town Hall to tender. The redevelopment includes hall and regional art gallery modifications for the overall development of a performing arts centre. Council contracts manager Michelle Plain said the announcement meant it was an ideal time for district businesses to register an interest as a ‘key supplier’. “Local businesses are invited to register their interest in

providing services, works and products they can offer the project with Industry Capability Network at www.icn.org. au,” she said. “Businesses looking to access supply chains of major contractors involved in this exciting local project are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity. “I urge local businesses to visit the website and review the inventory of services, works and products required for the performing arts centre redevelopment project. “Tenderers for this project

must submit a Victorian Industry Participation Plan, a requirement of the State Government, to indicate the level of local content they intend to engage throughout the entire redevelopment process.” The VIPP connects major contractors with regional suppliers and requires government departments and agencies to consider competitive suppliers, including Small to Medium Enterprises, when awarding contracts valued at $1-million or more in regional Victoria.

“By providing local communities with ownership of projects, we can help them improve local infrastructure and facilities and contribute to a better quality of life for regional Victoria,” Mr Delahunty said.

Irish duo to return Internationally successful Irish musical duo Foster and Allen have included Horsham in a national tour.

Mick Foster and Tony Allen have been performing together for more than 30 years and will appear at Horsham Centre Cinemas on June 18. The tour is part of their 17th trip to Australia. The singers have been performing their blend of easy listening and folk music all over the world.

THE CLUB: Actor John Woods stars in the David Williamson play The Club at Wesley Performing Arts Centre in Horsham on May 22. The Club, which became a cult movie from the early 1980s and featured Ararat football export Rene Kink and former Minyip coach Ron Wearmouth when they were at Collingwood, follows the shift from Australian sport to Australian business. The play follows developments involving an old-school footy coach, a self-made millionaire and club president and a high-priced recruit. Can the proudest club in the history of Aussie Rules football survive the back-room dramas and boardroom brawls that are more ferocious than any on-field dustup? Tickets are available online at wesleypac.com.au or Harvey World Travel 5382 6699. Picture: CONTRIBUTED

Between them they have sold 19-million records, making them one of Ireland’s biggest entertainment exports. Their 25 albums have included the popular The Rambles of Spring, A Bunch of Thyme, Maggie and After All These Years. The Foster and Allen band accompanying them to Australia includes Moyra Fraser on keyboards, Ollie Kennedy, bass guitar, and Bryan O’Donnell, guitar. The duo performed to a full house at Horsham during a national tour in 2010. Wimmera fans can book at Horsham Centre Cinemas on 5382 1249 or through website www.centrecinemas.com.au

immera police say they continue to be frustrated by reports of theft from unlocked motor vehicles.

Crime Prevention Officer Leading Senior Constable Eddy MacDonald said many people were ignoring a message about locking cars or to avoid leaving cash or valuables in cars in clear view. He said police officers had made a concerted effort to spread the message through foot patrols, particularly during the warmer months when drivers had left car windows down. “During these patrols police spoke directly to the car drivers who had left vehicles unlocked and valuables on display. In some cases keys were left in the ignition,” he said. Sen Const MacDonald said he suspected

many people still believed it was okay to leave cars and homes unlocked simply because they lived in a country centre. “The facts speak for themselves. For example, since January this year there have been 31 reported thefts of cash and valuables from vehicles in the Horsham response zone. The majority of these vehicles were unlocked,” he said. He said Horsham police had also investigated thefts in Nhill and Edenhope where a thief or thieves had stolen valuables and cash from several vehicles and were investigating multiple thefts from cars in Horsham residential areas, most from unlocked vehicles. “We are just as frustrated as anyone by the thefts. We might not always be able to get your cash or valuables back. Identity theft

is also an issue, a crime committed by using your credit card at shops or on the internet or even assuming your identity to conduct illegal activity. “Don’t leave personal papers in the glove box and engrave your valuables with an identifiable number such as your drivers licence or ABN number. But simply locking your car and or removing cash and valuables might prevent the incident in the first place.” Sen Const MacDonald also warned drivers they could face a fine of $147 for leaving their vehicle unlocked or with the windows down. “You only have to be three metres from the vehicle for it to be an offence,” he said. People with information about car theft can contact police or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Blue Ribbon Foundation Horsham Branch and Art Is… Festival have again joined forces for a Family Fun Ride as part of a Family Fun Day on June 2. The two organisations have decided to continue the ride after the success of an inaugural cycling event at Sawyer Park last year. Co-ordinator Amelia Crafter said a change to later morning to allow riders to participate in other events would make the event even better this year. “The fun ride is aimed at families and people of all ages and this year, the police will lead riders along Barnes Boulevard before they turn back along the Wimmera River track to Sawyer Park,” she said. Mrs Crafter said ride registrations would open at Sawyer Park at 11am and the ride would start at 11.30am. Adults must accompany riders under 16. The cost is $5 per rider with all money going to Wimmera Base Hospital’s emergency department.

Association call for business registration W immera Development Association is calling for Wimmera businesses involved with information communication technology to register for an ICT Regional Database.

The association has made the call in response to the ICT industry increasing due to the economy shifting online with the progress and availability of technology. It is confident the creation of a regional database will allow easy access for regional businesses requiring ICT services as well as increase the use of regional providers.

“The list of providers will include businesses working directly in the ICT field including website developers, computer sales and repairs, agriculture areas financial services providers as well as businesses providing training in ICT.”

Association project officer Bridie Chesterfield said people from across the region could access broad ICT services in industries including agriculture, health, retail and education.

“But unless you know the exact providers’ name, you might struggle to find the right business for your requirements,” she said.

Providing you with great service and professional advice

Ms Chesterfield said when established, the ICT database would be on the Wimmera Development Association website with business contact information available for potential clients or customers.

“This database will allow for a search for the field a potential customer or client is wanting and then provide a wider choice of businesses, rather than a generic search online which comes up with minimal results.

She said businesses keen to be involved could download registration forms from website www.wda.org.au.

HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT: Members of East Grampians Health Services’ physiotherapy team, from left, Lisa Haddow, Chris Perry, Caroline Hamilton and Jo Kaye at Ararat’s Community Health Centre. Picture: CONTRIBUTED

Centre success E

ast Grampians Health Service chief executive Nick Bush has invited the people of Ararat district to visit the health group’s revamped Community Health Centre.

Mr Bush said the service had been fortunate that funding through Collier Charitable Fund and the Commonwealth Government had helped make the renovations possible. “We are very fortunate that these organisations have to contribute in the health of our community. EGHS welcomes the community to come and see the new centre and all the services it offers,” he said.

A change to the entrance has improved traffic flow, there is extra storage, dedicated play area for children and new offices and treatment rooms. One of the major changes is the relocation of a physiotherapy department from the first floor of Ararat Hospital to the centre. This has meant services such as podiatry, occupational therapist, dietitian, speech therapist, physiotherapist, social worker, community health nurse, diabeteseducation and dentist services are now in the same building.

Primary Care manager Julia Ogdin said it was now easy for clients to make bookings to see several health professionals on the one day, with one reception coordinating all appointments.

“This is a big advantage to our clients who visit us from outlying rural area,” he said. Mr Bush: “Director of support services Stuart Kerr and his team did an excellent job to deliver it on time and on budget. “The end result is something I believe the whole community can be proud of. The feedback we have received to date has been overwhelmingly positive.”

Renovations have occurred

in the last year and included changes an internal layout that health professionals have described as providing a ‘fresh, light airy feel’.

The ‘Bikes for Kids’ project had a three-fold goal to help retired men impart skills to young people, recycle broken bikes that would otherwise be sent to landfill, and provide reconditioned and affordable bikes to children.

Ararat Men’s Shed president Reg Holmes-Brown said the beauty of the ‘yes’ Optus Community Grants program was that it was helping Ararat’s disadvantaged children through knowledge and hard work.

The ‘Hammer Grammar’ project taught children with behavioural issues how to develop woodwork and metal work skills.

“Many parents are unable to buy a bike for their kids so being able to completely rebuild the bikes, give them to those in need and pass on our wood-

ost victims of scams can never recover their lost money, but by taking immediate action it’s possible to reduce the damage and avoid the latest danger – the follow-up scam.

Despite public awareness of scams, the perpetrators’ methods are becoming increasingly sophisticated and otherwise savvy people are falling victim.

It’s almost impossible for victims to get their money back because most of the fraudulent companies are international, placing them outside of Australian government jurisdiction. However, the following steps may help to minimise the financial loss, and make it harder for these criminals. 1. Contact your bank. Do this as soon as you become aware of the scam – they may be able to stop money transfers. At the least they’ll be able to close your account so that the scammers won’t have further access to your details and money.

With so many scams in operation, it pays to stay informed. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has a website dedicated to scams, how they work and what to do about them.

3. Beware of follow-up scams. Follow-up scams focus on people who have already been scam victims because the perpetrators see them as an easy target. Look out for the following clues:

For further information, go to www. scamwatch.gov.au.

• You receive an offer to swap your investment for another one in order to recover your losses

The page under the tab ‘How scams work’ gives a particularly interesting insight into scams, scammers and the stories of everyday people who have fallen victim.

• You receive an offer to buy your shares at a premium provided you pay a fee to have “restrictions” on the shares lifted • Someone offers you assistance to locate the person that originally scammed you but you must pay travel and accommodation costs

Wait on probe T

he country Victorian football community might have to wait at least three weeks to find out the implications of a serious incident in a Wimmera League match at Stawell last weekend.

Wimmera League investigations officer Ted McCabe has 21 days to make a recommendation to the league commission but can request more time if necessary.

melee between Nhill and Stawell club members at Central Park is over an altercation between a Nhill coach and a Stawell volunteer goal umpire. Police are investigating the incident and are appealing for witnesses or anyone who took video footage of the incident to get in touch with Constable Andrew Reading at Stawell Police Station.

Recommendations

Apart from the prospect of police action, speculation is rife about what penalties authorities might dish out if and when players, officials or other individuals appear before a football tribunal.

Western Vic Football Manager Stephen McQueen, who was at the game with other officials but in clubrooms when the incident occurred, refused to be drawn on details involving the incident.

Guilty verdicts involving club players or officials and umpires have historically led to harsh penalties.

“Wimmera League’s commission will make a decision on what action to take based on Mr McCabe’s recommendations,” he said.

allee Football League is providing big games every week and this week is set to be no exception with three terrific games set to excite competition followers.

In last week’s games Beulah overcame a determined Ouyen United by only three points, Jeparit-Rainbow notched up its first win with a gutsy 17-point victory over Hopetoun while Walpeup-Underbool lost its third match in a row, going down to Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers by 21 points. Highway rivals Hopetoun and Beulah will do battle when the Blues travel to Hopetoun on Saturday. Although this is a contest that will see undefeated Beulah up against winless Hopetoun, it is sure to be a tough game because the Devils always lift against the Blues. Hopetoun has had the same people performing every week with Luke Carr, Liam Price and Cade Wellington featuring in best-players lists weekly. This is the issue with the Devils - the lack of help from the rest of the team. If Hopetoun are going to be any chance of winning this game then they will need everyone on the team playing their role.

The Blues have proven match winners in centre half forward Dennis Redden, midfielders Tyler Lehmann and Micah Buchanan while Brad Shannon has been controlling things in the backline. For the Devils to cover these players they will need the likes of new recruit Pat Purcell to lift his game, as well as young players Rylan Wellington, Leigh Stewart and Alex McCarthy. The Devils will crack in hard and give their all but Beulah will have too much class and speed through the middle that will see Redden get on top in the forward line. The Blues will win by 30 points.

Neighbours Northern neighbours Ouyen United and Walpeup-Underbool will go head to head at Ouyen. Ouyen United has been in great form over the last few weeks and in a gallant effort almost overcame Beulah. Damian Cupido has been leading the charge, with the star forward on fire in front goal. Young players Kale Barker and Ben Mole have found their feet in the Ouyen senior team, which has enabled the Demons to produce some great footy. Walpeup-Underbool on the other hand is in a form slump. It has lost its last three games and will need to produce a big effort to overcome the Demons.

Footballers reach milestones Warrack Eagles stalwart Steve ‘Rock’ Murphy, 45, is now tracking towards a 300-game Wimmera Football League milestone after notching up his 500th game overall last weekend. The ruckman and key-position player has missed only four games of football, one with injury and three with unavailability, since 2002. He will play his 298th club game against Minyip-Murtoa in the reserves this Saturday and is likely reach the 300 mark against Ararat on June 15. The resilient Murphy has played with Jeparit, JeparitRainbow, Warracknabeal, South Mildura in Sunraysia League and Palmerston in the Northern

Territory. Eagles president Bernie Lindsay described Murphy as a club ‘legend’. “He is always the first at training, at 45 mind you, and is a great role model,” he said.

Favourite Horsham RSL Diggers favourite son Justin Garth will play his 150th senior Wimmera Football League game this weekend, Club captain for the last four years and a league representative who commands widespread respect for his endeavour, Garth will reach his milestone against Ararat at Horsham City Oval. Diggers president Peter Miller described Garth as: “A true club person – as loyal as they come.”

Neighbours set for big games MALLEE FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Wade Champion returned to form with seven goals last round while Chris Chubb and Mathew Palmer continue to play great footy. The Roos will need to get better defensively, with opposition teams averaging close to 16 goals a game against them. The Demons and the Roos will both come out all guns blazing, but I expect Walpeup-Underbool will recover and win by 10 points.

Woomelang-Lascelles requires big games from Trent Donnan and Pierce Liddle in the centre, and will be hoping the form of full forward Jayden Lonergan can continue. Pacesetters set for mighty clash HORSHAM DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE

T

By GRANT KUCHEL

he clash of the top two sides in Horsham District Football League occurs at Kalkee this Saturday when the home side plays host to rampant Laharum. The clash has all the making of a shootout with both sides having forwards capable of kicking big scores. The big issue facing Kalkee will be finding a possible replacement for key forward Josh Beddison. The big red-head needed help from the ground last week with an ankle injury and might not come up this week and the Laharum backline will be breathing a bit easier. While Laharum’s Shannon Argall had a quiet week last week, Jason Przibilla stepped and the Kalkee defenders will need to pay plenty of attention to both. Kalkee is short

ting their season humming with the likes of Sean Mantell, Jake Goodes, Paul Hanns and Ash Cowen hitting top form. Harrow-Balmoral will need its experienced players such as Josh Vickery, Brent Penny, Brent Forsyth and Nathan Neumann will need to make sure the Roos play tempo football and avoid getting sucked into playing a quick running shootout game against the Baggies After a slow start to the season the Baggies at home will grab the.

on height in defence and might find it difficult to match the key forwards, especially with Kevin Mills still missing.

Versatile Demons utility Rhys Bennett has sneaked under the guard of a lot of sides so far this year, regularly featuring in the best players and with Robbie Miller has provided Laharum with plenty of drive from around the stoppages. They will be involved in an intriguing midfield battle and the winner might give their side the decisive edge.

Percentage booster

Steve Schultz, Paul Christian, Brendan McDonald and Tim Wade have been in good form around the stoppages and might be a bit stronger in the contest but lack the leg speed of their Demon counterparts. The Kees quartet will make sure Kalkee have enough of the ball to sneak home in a thriller.

Rams and Bombers No matter where Natimuk and Noradjuha-Quantong are on the ladder, the neighbours usually have a fair dinkum dip at each other. The key for Natimuk will be containing the multi-pronged Bombers forward line. Natimuk showed last week it can contain one key forward but the Bombers have many who can kick a bagful of goals. Sam Weddell, Adam Hall, Shane Oakley and Jordan Huff have all featured on the scoreboard this year and the Rams will struggle to cover them. The loss of Todd Stevenson’s run and carry through the middle will hurt the Rams and Dylan Wright will need to step up or find a contingency plan. Assistant coach Tim Friend continues to be a shining light for the and with Ash and Jamie Pekin has featured regularly in the best players list. Noradjuha-Quantong would be on a high after last week and they will need to make sure they turn up ready

KING OF UPSETS: Edenhope-Apsley forward James Dixon contests possession with Noradjuha-Quantong utility Brady King during the Bombers’ upset 52-point win over the Saints. to play this week or Natimuk will pounce. But after doing the hard work to get their season back on track they will make sure they consolidate it with a good win.

On the line Eighth will take on ninth when Pimpinio takes on Rupanyup and a loss for Rupanyup will probably officially announce their season finished. Pimpinio sits one win below the Panthers and with the likes of Darcy O’Connor, Liam Jakobi and Dylan Baker all in good form the Tigers will have high hopes of causing an upset. We say week in week out that the Panthers have classy players in Nathan Sasche, Glenn Wyatt, Matt and Drew Tyler but the challenge is for

the next tier of payers to step up and so far this season it hasn’t happened regularly enough. Pimpinio coach Daryl Eastwell wants his side to play a running game. If The Tigers can control the ball and avoid turning it over regularly the Panthers might have to work hard to save their season.

Huge match A massive game will unfold between Swifts and Harrow-Balmoral with the winner set to enter the five. Swifts come off a confidence -building win against the Lakers while the Roos had to work hard against Pimpinio to grab the points. It finally looks as if Swifts are get-

After a couple of challenging weeks the Edenhope-Apsley will enjoy the chance to boost percentage against struggling Taylors Lake. The Saints suffered a shock loss last week and Mal Coutts and James Dixon will be grateful they are playing the bottom side and getting a chance to get refine and reinforce their structures. The return of Dean Harberger was important to the Lakers. They can’t afford players of his class to be sidelined and along with Craig Britten and Jason Weir will need to work overtime to stop a Saints side hell bent on redemption. Dave McLeish and Brent Christie will control the centre of the ground and Will Smith, Dylan Vanzini and James Dixon will have plenty of opportunities to kick a big score. At the other end Bernie Kealy and Chris Oliver will make life very hard for the Lakers to kick a competitive score.

HDFL round seven Edenhope-Apsley v Taylors Lake at Apsley Kalkee v Laharum at Kalkee Natimuk v Noradjuha-Quantong at Natimuk Swifts v Harrow-Balmoral at North Park, Stawell Pimpinio v Rupanyup at Pimpinio

Unbeaten teams primed for top-of-table clash MININERA DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE By JONATHAN BOX

Wickliffe-Lake Bolac and GlenthompsonDunkeld remain the only two undefeated teams as momentum builds for round six of Mininera and District Football League. This week Wickliffe-Lake Bolac will play host to Lismore-Derrinallum. Last week Wickliffe-Lake Bolac played Great Western and although Great Western came within 10 points at half time, the Magpies walked away from the

contest with a convincing win. William Archer has been instrumental in front of goal for the Magpies and Saturday was no exception as he booted seven goals. Thomas Goodear also contributed with four, while big man Bradley Keilar and James Keys were best. Lismore-Derrinallum come off a draw with SMW Rovers and will be hoping to upset the Magpies’ winning streak. Lismore-Derrinallum battled with windy conditions last week but had a big last quarter, kicking four goals to the Bulldogs’ one to draw the game. Michael Browning, Simon Stewart and William Bungey all contributed in front of the sticks, kicking two goals while Dean McPhan

Penshurst, meanwhile, hosts HawkesdaleMacarthur in what is set to be a great clash of the league’s southern teams. Both teams will be looking for a win to stay in or keep in touch with the top five. Last week Penshurst had a relatively easy 10goal win over Caramut to keep spot in the five. James Delahunty proved a handful for Caramut’s backline, kicking 10 goals, which also rewarded him with best-on-ground honours, while Robert Brewster also contributed six. Hawkesdale-Macarthur however will be looking for a win after a loss last week came at the

hands of Tatyoon, which also won for the first time this season. Adam Greene, Justin Chalmers and Lachlan Glare were among the best for the Eagles, however they will be looking to play a little better to go one step further and clinch a win this Saturday. In other games across the league this weekend, undefeated Glenthompson-Dunkeld travels to Mininera to take on SMW Rovers. MoystonWillaura plays Great Western, the Swans and the Eagles will battle when Ararat hosts Caramut and Woorndoo-Mortlake will play Tatyoon which will be looking for its second win of the season and an opportunity to get its 2013 season on track.

Burras ready for Eagle shootout WIMMERA FOOTBALL LEAGUE

I

By DEAN LAWSON

f anything stood out in MinyipMurtoa’s big Wimmera Football League win over Horsham RSL Diggers last week it was the Burras’ willingness to spread and run. Watching the game unfold from the end the Burras were attacking last week was like watching a rapidly advancing wave across the ground. The runners peeling wide in search of the overlap before taking clean possession and arching the back was an impressive sight, particularly under the lights at Horsham City Oval. It was quintessential and trademark Wimmera League and if the Burras can reproduce that type of hard running against Warrack Eagles on Saturday we’re in for another cracker match. Minyip-Murtoa will again have the space on the open country at Minyip but this weekend will find their opponents just as adept at manipulating the switch with counter-punching runs. It’s no secret that Warrack Eagles on the dash are hard to stop and the contest might simply come down to which side can control the air, particularly in front of the goals. Good signs for the Burras was the

form of Jayden Beaumont and the fact that it didn’t appear as if any other particular individuals were creating the run. It simply seemed inherit in the group. Liam Newell, Blake Young, John Delahunty, take your pick – they were all having a dash.

wounds after running into Horsham Saints but would be confident of a change in fortunes against the Diggers. Horsham RSL Diggers shapes up significantly different to last season, with utility Damian Cameron and forward Steve Nicholson providing critical strength through the spine, freeing up Luke Chamberlain and providing respite for the likes of Justin Garth and Kye Chapple.

Warrack Eagles fell six points short of sneaking an upset against Dimboola and will surely back themselves to beat the Burras. Coach Tim Inkster’s earlier than expected inclusion into the Eagles line-up adds a new dimension to the playing group and regardless of his fitness will demand a quality opponent if he plays again.

Ararat, like the Diggers, struggled to kick goals last week, although James Laidlaw managed to kick half a dozen six pointers. Will Bell, Jake Robinson and Harry Ganley also stood up and Alan Batchelor, a thorn in the Diggers’ side in the last few years, is also getting the ball.

The Eagles also had Brock Orval kicking goals and Peter Weir in good form, which promises fascinating match-ups against Burras such Clinton Midgley and Brayden Ison. Talented ruckman Kieran Delahunty had an outstanding game for the Burras last week but is likely to be back playing for La Trobe University in Victorian Amateur Association this weekend. Minyip-Murtoa will continue good form and beat the Eagles in a thriller.

Anything can happen

PARTY POOPERS: Horsham RSL Diggers utility Luke Chamberlain outmarks Minyip-Murtoa’s Zac Cross on Saturday night. The Burras spoiled the Diggers’ 30th anniversary celebration with a 51-point win. Liam Newell, below left, was one of Minyip-Murtoa’s best players. Below right, teenager Jacob O’Beirne, pictured in his round-one debut, made a great return for Horsham Saints on Saturday due to a North Ballarat Rebels bye. The Saints and Dimboola are both undefeated after four rounds.

Wimmera League is in good nick this year with many teams playing a slick brand of football regardless of where they sit on the ladder. Reigning premier Horsham will come off the bye to play Nhill at Nhill and while the visitors should

win, the bubbling footy environment at the moment suggests anything could happen. Nhill seems to have a big finish in its game-day arsenal as well as ruckman Will Oakley who seems to be a master of seizing the initiative and giving mid-field team-mates first use of the ball. Mat Jones can also lead opponents a merry dance if given space, and last week, in the Tigers’ win over Stawell, Brent Marra kicked six goals. Horsham, which demolished Stawell in its last game, will need to be switched on to beat the Tigers. The Demons have an enviable cache of young talent under coaches Jordyn Burke and Brad Hartigan and goal-kickers in Joel Geue and Dylan Parish.

Tigers group early but will be challenged again in the final term.

Ice-breaker? Horsham RSL Diggers, up against Ararat on Saturday, will continue its search for an ice-breaking win. The Diggers are competitive, particularly through centre corridor, but still copping it on the scoreboard, something that doesn’t sit well with coach Paul Brooks. An old-fashioned but uncharacteristic half-time blast from Brooks turned heads last week and it will be fascinating to see whether the Diggers respond. Ararat might still be licking its

Horsham RSL will finally get the formula right, exploit Ararat’s injurydepleted ranks and score a muchneeded win.

Saints on song Stawell, meanwhile, looms as the next victim of an early-season Horsham Saints charge. The Saints seem to have their mix right and are shaping as serious contenders this year. Gavin Kelm kicked nine goals last game, Garry Hallam is firing and few opponents seem to be able to match up against a super-fit Phil Butsch. Stawell will consider the loss to Nhill as the one that got away and players such as Tom Eckel, Toby Reid and Todd Matthews must find a way of avoiding the clinches and provide Jorah Margetson with opportunities. A potential big-man battle between Stawell’s Shane Field and Mick Rowe will be beauty if it happens. The Saints will be too good across the ground and win well.

Garrett Liston, Alex Thomson, Nick Pekin and Mick O’Callaghan are paving the way for the likes of Tyler Blake, John Wood and Billy Lloyd, to name only a few. Horsham will shake off a dogged

Ford’s Focus small car lifted itself to appear in eighth spot with 1670 sales, while Holden’s sharp pricing on Captiva 5 and 7 helped the nameplate into ninth spot with 1640 sales.

With 3504 sales, the Corolla small hatchback and sedan were easily Australia’s best-selling car in April. The HiLux trade ute, meanwhile, recorded an equally strong month, posting 2932 sales and pushing March’s best-seller, the Mazda3 hatch and sedan, down to third with 2842 sales. “Toyota dealers continue to report strong demand for Corolla and HiLux, which is encouraging as we enter what is traditionally our two strongest months of the year,” Toyota Australia sales and marketing executive director Matthew Callachor said.

Territory Ford’s Territory was the only locally made car to make significant inroads on the Australian market, but sales of its Falcon slumped to new lows, the latest sales figures show. The gloomy news for local producers comes as the market bounced almost eight percent compared with April last year, and full importer Mazda lost more ground to local carmaker Holden but held on to second spot behind Toyota in the overall sales race.

Toyota’s Camry mid-size four-cylinder and hybrid sedan rounded out the top 10 with 1617 sales.

Losers SOLE WINNER: Ford’s Territory SUV was the only Australian-made car to experience substantial sales growth in April.

VFACTS sales data for the month of April shows the Territory was able to increase sales by more than 17 percent compared with the same month last year, with 1206 of the large soft-roaders rolling out of Ford showrooms. Meanwhile, the Falcon large car slumped to just 717 sales, an almost 30 percent fall compared with April last year. The news was not good for other locally-made brands, either. Toyota’s mid-size Camry held its own, raising monthly sales by less than one percent in a market that fell more than four percent compared with April last year, to 1617, but the Aurion continued to feel the pinch in the large-car

segment, falling more than 25 percent to 469. Holden’s Commodore was outside the top 10 best-selling cars for the second month in a row, with only 1515 new registrations recorded for April. This is more than 32 percent down on the same month last year. Holden director of product launch communications, Craig Cheetham, told GoAuto that stocks of Commodore had almost run out as the large car hit its final month of production. “The runout of VE has been extremely successful, and remaining supplies of the previous model are now extremely limited,” Mr Cheetham said.

The car-maker is due to introduce its redesigned VF Commodore to Australian showrooms next month. Sales of the smaller Holden Cruze, meanwhile, fell one percent to 2290 compared with the same month last year. This is despite the car-maker launching a mildly worked-over refresh of the range earlier this year.

The losers this month include Mazda’s CX-5, which fell just outside the top 10 with only 1510 sales after ranking in the top eight in March, and Holden and Subaru, which both lost market share for the month despite six percent growth in the passenger car market.

Mr Cheetham said Cruze sales in April included a mix of old and facelifted versions.

Market winners for the month include Mitsubishi, which outsold Nissan with a 6.4 percent share of the Australian market compared with the latter’s 6.0 percent stake, and Toyota, which increased its share of the Australian market to almost 20 percent.

Despite the small drop, the Cruze rose in the rankings to fourth, displacing Hyundai’s still-new i30 small hatchback, which fell to 2150 sales.

Mitsubishi’s strong result came partially thanks to higher than expected sales of its new Mirage city car, with 859 units moving out the door.

Nissan’s Navara work ute continues to sell well as Australia’s appetite for

$9800 and $9000 cheaper than before. Holden claims the Calais now offers a genuine home-grown alternative to premium European competitors – see the lengthy spec list further down.

The prices listed apply to sedan versions, with equivalent Sportwagons to cost $2000 more. ‘Prestige’ paint adds a further $550.

Not only will VF be easier on the wallet, but the addition of a host of incabin technology across all variants will, in Holden’s own words, make even the base Commodore an ‘aspirational vehicle’ again, and a car that will ‘win over a new generation of Australians’. The base Evoke – GM owns the trademark to the name, which is not to be confused with the rather conceptually different Range Rover Evoque – kicks off proceedings with a range of new technology nestled inside the radically redesigned cabin. Mitsubishi joins end-of-year sales party After its best ever first quarter, Mitsubishi is hoping to continue the sales lift with a range of driveaway deals and cash-back offers of up to $3000 on selected models until May 31.

While the Lancer Sport small sedan’s price stays the same, it too is now driveaway at $19,990. Even Mitsubishi’s little Mirage now includes on-road costs and additional savings with $500 cash back for its $12,990 price tag.

The greatest savings are on the Pajero GLX-R and VRX off-roaders, with $3000 cash back and a driveaway price of $54,990 and $59,990 respectively, down from $55,990 and $60,990 before on-road costs.

Honda, Nissan and Citroen have also announced offers with combination of price reductions, warranty extension and roadside assistance to attract end-of-year sales. MAKING A SPLASH: Mitsubishi Pajero leads the fleet, offering cash discounts of up to $3000 and lower prices.

available on the mid-size front-wheel-drive Outlander LS SUV at $29,990 but, as the new price now includes on-road costs, the savings are

even greater. The smaller ASX soft-roader also has a price reduction of $1000, bringing its price to $24,990.

Mitsubishi’s five-year, 130,000km warranty, fiveyear roadside assistance and capped price servicing is unaffected by the end-of-year deals. Daniel Gardner © GoAutoMedia, 2013

When it hits showrooms in June, the fleet-friendly entry level sedan – now called Evoke rather than Omega – will be priced from $34,990 plus on-road costs with standard six-speed automatic transmission.

TOP QUALITY VEHICLES include climate control, 7 airbags, reverse camera, alloy wheels etc.

News of the revised pricing leaked out, and the Lion brand has confirmed one of the Australian automotive world’s worstkept secrets. Holden’s decision to take the scalpel to the bottom line of its Australian-made icon comes at a time when rival importers are capitalising on favourable exchange rates to sharpen their own pencils.

Honda Accord better, but pricier H

onda Australia says its ninthgeneration Accord sedan is better in almost every department than before, but the company will make buyers pay for the privilege, with price increases of between $3300 and $4700 over the previous model.

Pricing will kick off at $31,490 plus on-road costs for the base VTi – up $3300, while the mid-range VTi-S – a new addition – will be $33,990. The VTi-L will start at $41,490 – up $4000, and the flagship V6 L will top out the range at $51,990 – $4700 more than before. We’re across the Tasman in New Zealand to drive the fully redesigned version, just short of one month before it officially goes on sale across Honda’s Australian dealer network.

Better economy Not to be confused with the Accord Euro, which Honda will still sell concurrently and is aimed at a younger and edgier clientele, the regular new Accord – which is designed in the US and built in Thailand – offers better economy than the previous version, and a longer list of standard features. It is 75mm shorter than the old one, too, but Honda claims more cabin space in the rear and more cargo volume in the boot, and better ‘cabin craftsmanship’ as well. The soundcancelling Active Noise Control sys-

three, four or six cylinders, the new model runs on either three or six. Honda claims it has beefed up the car’s responses under three-cylinder impetus, thus negating the need for an extra mode.

The base $31,490 VTi model includes as standard, an eight-inch display with a reversing camera, daytime running lights, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth and USB connections, steering wheel controls and 16-inch alloy wheels – with full-size spare. ONE OF A PAIR: Honda’s new Accord will again sell with the edgier Accord Euro when it his showrooms in June.

tures never before used on its models Down Under.

While forebears have been pitched as rivals for the large-segment Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon and Toyota Aurion, Honda now says the smaller new Accord will give it a one-two punch alongside the Euro against mid-sized rivals.

All variants bar the entry level will get Honda’s LaneWatch Blind Spot Monitoring, which feeds footage from the passenger-side blind-spot through to the central screen, while higher level versions come with lane assist, autonomous braking and adaptive cruise control.

In fact, GoAuto understands the company is attempting to convince industry guide VFACTS to reclassify the Accord as a medium-sized car, not a large car like the previous version, thereby making it a direct competitor to the Mazda6, as well as the Ford Mondeo – at least in industry parlance. The company has also chosen the new Accord as the testing ground for several high-end active safety fea-

Completing the picture is a lighter new MacPherson strut suspension set-up in place of the old double wishbone arrangement, bringing the Accord up to speed with rivals, plus a stiffer body to improve both dynamics and NVH levels – the latter already an Accord strongpoint. Under the bonnet there is a reworked version of either the familiar 2.4-litre VTEC four-cylinder or

3.5-litre V6 petrol engine, with 85 per cent of sales projected to be the entry four-pot. The more popular of the two engines produces 129kW of power at 6200rpm – 4kW less than before – and 225Nm of torque at 4000rpm, and is once again matched to a fivespeed automatic as standard. Fuel consumption has been trimmed to 7.9 litres per 100km on entry versions. The flagship variant will again be powered by a single overhead cam V6, now with 206kW of power at 6200rpm – up 4kW – and 339Nm of torque at 4900rpm, matched to a six-speed auto. Fuel consumption is down seven percent to 9.2L/100km. Again, the six-cylinder version gets fuel-saving cylinder deactivation, but while the previous unit could run on

For an extra $2500, the VTi-S adds LaneWatch Blind Spot Monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, rainsensing auto front wipers, LED headlights, front foglights, a premium audio system with seven speakers and touchscreen, reverse-tilt door mirror and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Flagship four Stepping up to the flagship fourcylinder VTi-L for an extra $7500 brings a sunroof, active cornering headlights, satellite navigation, ‘intelligent’ climate control, leather trim with heated front seats, keyless entry/ start, electric front seats with driver’s memory, leather-clad gearshift/steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and 18-inch alloys. For another $3000, you can option the ADAS active safety system. Mike Costello © GoAutoMedia, 2013

Nissan prices re-born Pulsar hatch from $18,990 Nissan has sharpened its pencil for the return of its Pulsar hatch, announcing a Korean car-beating $18,990 price tag at entry level ahead of its showroom arrival next month. The hatch also reintroduces the SSS badge for the first time in seven years, with the 140kW 1.6-litre turbocharged model priced from $29,240 for those favouring a six-speed manual version. Nissan has priced the hatch $1000 lower than the sedan version introduced this year.

Value-driven Malaysian car-maker Proton is the only brand in the segment to undercut the Pulsar, with its Gen2 hatchback priced from $16,990 drive-away. Despite only going on sale in January, Nissan’s sedan has made its way into Australia’s top 10, and in March knocked the Holden Commodore out of the list of best-sellers for the first time in more than three decades. However, while sedan buyers are limited to Nissan’s 96kW/174Nm 1.8-litre engine, hatch buyers can opt for the same 1.8-litre

unit or the more exciting turbocharged 140kW/240Nm 1.6. Adding a continuously variable transmission costs an extra $2250 for the two 1.8-litre engined models in the line-up, and $2500 for the two 1.6-litre variants. On paper, the hatch’s list of equipment isn’t as miserly as the low price would suggest. The standard equipment list on the entrylevel ST powered by the 1.8-litre engine runs to cloth seat trim, power windows, airconditioning, cruise control, four-speaker audio with an auxiliary port and steering wheel-mounted controls, a Bluetooth phone connection and 16-inch alloy wheels. TURNING UP THE HEAT: Nissan has announced a sharp $29,240 price for its warmed-over SSS hatchback.

Its price undercuts the current small-car market leader, the $20,330 Mazda3 sedan and hatch, Holden’s freshly repackaged $19,490 Cruze sedan and hatch, Toyota’s still shiny-new $19,990 Corolla hatch, and Hyundai’s $20,990 i30 hatch.

The SSS pricing compares to $26,490 for the Holden Cruze SRi-V, powered by a 132kW 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, also mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.
