Australian Editorial Award 2016

WET-WEATHER BUSINESS: Case IH national product hay and harvest manager Tim Slater, left, shares a moment with Mitch Blackmore from O’Connors in Horsham during a Case IH Red Excellence showcase at Longerenong College. Rain, wind and mud greeted dealers and customers from across Australia at the two-week event. About 70 customers from WA and SA joined about 40 dealers for sessions and a dinner under marquees last week. This week’s activities involve Victorian and southern NSW customers, and organisers were expecting a crowd of 500 for sessions and a dinner tomorrow. After the Longerenong event, the showcase will move to Toowoomba. Picture: KELLY LAIRD

Track to set standard A

BY DEAN LAWSON

multi million-dollar greyhound racing track planned for Horsham might provide a blueprint for race-circuit designs based on maximising welfare of competing dogs. Horsham Greyhound Racing Club manager Justin Brilliant confirmed yesterday the layout of the new track would feature state-of-the-art race design incorporating dog safety. He said he hoped the track redevelopment, which involved a complete overhaul of the circuit, would be ready for racing in the 2017-18 financial year.

Project construction was originally scheduled to start last year as part of a Greyhound Racing Victoria statewide venue-upgrade program. Mr Brilliant said greyhound welfare was critical, especially with the industry under national scrutiny after an inquiry led to the NSW government shutting down the sport across the border. “The truth is that one of the main reasons track redevelopment has been on hold is to basically make sure we have the right design that maximises the welfare of the greyhounds,” he said. “With GRV and the whole industry

in Victoria going to such great odds in the past 12 to 18 months to work through industry reforms, it is fair to say the Horsham track might well provide the blueprint standard in greyhound-welfare design.” Mr Brilliant said he was confident the project would go ahead and that greyhound racing had a bright future in Horsham and across Victoria despite the industry being in turmoil in NSW. He added he also had particular confidence in the GRV board and administration in working through reforms. “We don’t envisage any major shortterm changes affecting us based on the

NSW developments – it’s too early to gauge. But GRV, State Government and other agencies have been working closely to make sure animal welfare is at the forefront of integrity and development reforms,” he said. “We can only worry about our own back yard. At the moment greyhound racing in Horsham is in the best position it’s ever been. The club is strong financially, has sound governance and things are basically going well. “I think being in rural areas people have the space and time to put extra work into their dogs and have no need to flout the rules. “We have no trainers here where

racing provides their sole income. There is no greed factor – people do it because they love the greyhounds.”

Pressure

GRV chairman Bernie Carolan said the NSW government’s decision to close down the industry in NSW were based on different circumstances to Victoria. “The close of the NSW industry will put immense regulatory, compliance, rehoming and operational pressures on other states, especially Victoria, as they handle a potential influx of new participants and dogs,” he said.
