Bypass impact plan
C
ommunity leaders will use a meeting on Monday night to stress a need for Great Western residents to prepare for the impact of a future Western Highway bypass of the historic wine village.
Great Western Future Committee, working off an official future plan for the settlement, will discuss opportunities and challenges at an annual meeting in Great Western Town Hall. Great Western is renowned worldwide for its wine production and committee members are also determined to protect and build on the village’s
reputation as a highway stop for regional travellers and visitors. Committee president Peter Bullock said the planned highway bypass meant Great Western had limited time to build on its ‘already fantastic reputation for events, history and particularly wine’. “We want to ensure we become a destination town for visitors as well as being a great place to live,” he said. Mr Bullock said he strongly supported the Great Western Future Plan, prepared by SED Consultants and funded by Northern Grampians Shire. “We are assured the modern traveller

knows where they’re heading before they head off,” he said. “This being the case, we need to make sure Great Western is a destination of choice. “We need to be able to offer the traveller a reason to come here, a place to eat, a place to stay, a great experience and a great memory to leave with.”
Well-known
Mr Bullock said events such as the town’s rodeo, pleasure ride, makers market and the iconic Great Western Races were already well known and well attended. He said the committee recognised
further opportunities such the development of a recreation reserve into an RV-friendly and camping area; permanent access to National Trust-listed Seppelt underground drives; linking the historic Best, Seppelt and Grampians Estate wineries with walking and cycling tracks, and developing the town’s Memorial Park as a gateway to Northern Grampians Shire as major projects. “Our next event is the Cameron Mason Country and Western Music Festival on Sunday at Memorial Park,” he said. “We hope this is the start of an

annual event and contributes to the theme of Great Western, a great town to visit... a great town to live.” Mr Bullock said Great Western businesses such as Salinger’s Café, Steel Cutters Cottage and Great Western Hotel, as well as wineries, bed and breakfast accommodation providers, Shoppe, service station and galleries all played their part in meeting the committee’s charter. “Over the years, the progress association has delivered many valuable projects creating a tremendous base for the future committee,” he said.
